Customer Reviews:
Beautiful and Finely crafted String Quartets........2007-05-14
These 8 Quartets are every bit as fine and Important 20th century Quartets as Shostakovich, Bartok or Janacek's.
Not as abstract as Bartok, nor as angst ridden as Shostakovich or as "odd" as Janacek, but Bright, sunny, and completely tonal while still being thoroughly modern 20th century music.
It is said Malipiero started composing these Quartets after hearing Stravinsky's Rite Of Spring for the first time. Changed his entire style of composing.
After many listenings, I get it.
They are melodious, they are imaginative, they soar, they shimmer.
Not a boring moment, not a note out of place.
A consistantly Great cycle.
The Orpheus Quartet is on a short list of the World's best String Quartets.
Here they turn in an outstanding performance.
Great phrasing, virtuosity, ensemble and dynamic.
The sound quality is as Good as it gets.
Warmth, great front to back depth, and a transparency that allows air and space between the instruments and notes. Everything is heard with great clarity.
Now...I've read the review of the only other complete cycle by the Venice String Quartet.
They compared them to the Orpheus basically as being more "Venice" and not as "glassy"(German) as Orpheus.
Well, The Italian Venice Quartet should be a bit more "idiomatic" in Italian music than a German Quartet. But that shouldn't deride just plain great playing. Should it?
But I have no comparison as I've never heard the other CD.
That's mainly because it's been Out Of Print and Unavailable for YEARS!.
Impossible to find a copy ANYWHERE on the Net.
For YEARS!
So right off the bat, Orpheus has a distinct advantage.
Theirs is the ONLY cycle Available. ANYWHERE.
But even theirs is Rare and pricey.
But well worth it if you want a FINE performance of these Fine Beautiful Quartets.
Without having heard the other version, I say these are wonderful and Very much fine enough for me.
This set is Highly Recommended.
Probably so even if I had heard The Venice String Quartet cycle.
It's that GOOD!
PS...
I held off buying this CD for 2 years, due to the $60.00+ price. Then a copy appeared here for Less (not much less), so I finally broke down and got it. It wasn't an easy decision. $50 something dollars is a lot of money for a double CD.
But I now see it will be well worth it as I have years of great listening pleasure ahead of me.
When I think of all the money I've spent on CDs that didn't last the test of time or even a couple of listenings,...Well this just equals the price of maybe 4 of those CDs I'll never listen to again.
Thus, in my mind, a better value.

Follow Up to "La Voce Del Padronne".......2000-07-11
Back in the late 70's - early 80's, Mr. Battiato released his "La Voce Del Padronne" album. After years of experimental music, this LP was a huge commercial hit in Europe for Franco Battiato.
Unfortunately for Mr. Battiato, his newly found following expected subsequent recordings to be as good and "commercially sound" as "La Voce Del Padronne."
Sadly, "L'Arc di Noe" falls a bit short of the mark. Don't get me wrong! The material on this collection of songs is very good -- probably better than most of the junk being passed off as music these days. But, it simply doesn't live up to "La Voce's" commercial success -- mainly because Battiato's intent is not to become an "AM Mogul."
"L'esodo" is by far the strongest offering on this CD. The chorus to this song is hypnotically interesting.
I strongly recommend this CD to those who like progressive rock / pop music. You won't be disappointed.

Enchanting music from a genius.......2002-07-13
That's a pretty fair argument except to point out that Malipiero has more range and was in many ways more original than Bartok. Twenty years ago you couldn't get the same writers to even acknowledge Malipiero as one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century, which he most surely was.
The Veneziano wraps around these works in performances so organic, so suffused with light and mood, that the competing survey by the Orpheus seems cold and glassy by comparison. The Orpheus hangs onto the Bartok comparison so much that it seems to be trying to make an argument for Bartok having written these quartets, too. It's a fine set in its way, but with nothing like the effect of the Venetian players. Somehow, I think the Veneziano studied these works in far more detail.
Of even greater note: the Veneziano captures fully the poise and utter elegance of these great works, an elegance that was so much a part of Malipiero's idiom and his native Venice. It recorded in a studio, but it somehow conjures the autumnal shadows of a Palladian gazebo, white linen, flutes of sparkling Prosecco, and handmade pasta on lovely old silver. By comparison, the Orpheus is curt and urban, with the strident atmosphere of a stand up tavola calda with bites between gulps of espresso from a paper cup. While the Veneziano is out around Vicenza in a villa garden, the Orpheus is squarely at Santa Lucia railway station wondering why the elletromotrice for Milan is late yet again. I'd prefer to not be on that kind of tight schedule with Malipero.
As usual with Dynamic, the sound takes into account the personality of the venue, and the instrumental blend is lean, light, and reflective of the ensemble's immaculate technique. The label may well have some of the finest recording engineers in the world. If you want to hear more of their work, listen to what they've gotten in Lecce and Milan in recordings of Casella's music. The result is enrapturing.
If you pick one set of the Malipiero quartets, get this Venetian one. It's a wonderful investment that will bring untold richness to you.

Customer Reviews:
Very moving. A wonderful concert recording.......2006-01-18
Endrigo writes beautiful melodies and his rich voice colored by by nostalgia, regret, amusement, and love of life. I know little Italian, but it is clear that his lyrics are of a very serious, poetical nature.
Best tracks: Aria di Neve, Girotondo Intorno Al Mondo, and his great classic L'Arca di Noe, but my absolute favorite is Via Broletto 34. When he sings the first line, a woman in the audience cries out "Bravo" with such admiration and enthusiasm in her voice that I am always moved. I strongly recommend this CD.
