The reason why German albums sold in North America are so often compilations of beer-drinking songs such as this compilation of 14 all-time favorites from the Bavarian Beer Singers is that drinking beer is very important in Germany. Not because the beer is so good, indeed a good reason per se, but because it is a venue to socialize and enjoy the company of other people. All Germans know most if not all of these songs by heart--from "Trink, Trink, Brüderlein Trink" to "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit"--and they can evoke homesickness or nostalgia. The liner notes give these instructions "How to enjoy this album":
Pour yourself a stein of beer.
Turn on the compact disc.
Sit down in a comfortable chair, take a sip of beer, close your eyes, and visualize the scene.
They've got it almost right--this is really music to sing with other people, so after you pour your beer and put the CD on--sit down with a good friend or a few to enjoy. --Erik Macki

German Drinking and Beer Garden Songs.......2005-09-17
I Know Ol' Dipper Would Approve!!!.......2003-01-07
For starters, the cover contains what is surely a dead ringer for my old drinking buddy Dipper Lips. The songs have an Ol' Dipper ring to them as well--lots of hunting songs, all drinking songs, and songs of general merriment altogether. That's an ace in the hole. Another plus is the price. It's a pretty full disc and the sound quality is about on par with most of these discs (i.e., average). Crowd noise is a tad loud (you won't notice after your second stein) and (of course) the singing is all in German (I don't speak a lick, but thisn't doesn't detract from the fun--just reminds me of the days I used to spend in the German beer halls during my "fugue of discovery" when I was in my early twenties). The only real negative is the liner notes don't contain the lyrics (let alone a translation).
In spite of the few minor drawbacks, I found this collection of fun songs to be well worth the price and a great companion for lonely drinking daze. And I am still certain that's my old chum Dipper on the cover.
Best to Enjoy When Drunk.......2001-11-16
While the songs include all the favorites of German Kneipekriecheren (pubcrawlers), which all good Bavarians know by heart, the loud party noises makes the lyrics difficult to understand, even if you're fluent in Deutsch. My personal favorites include "Bier Hier" (misspelled in the liner notes) and "In Munich Steht ein Hofbrauhaus."
What the heck. Pour yourself a Hefe-Weisen or three and enjoy!

Hap Palmer may be best known for his vocal contributions to the hugely popular Baby Songs video series, but parents of 2- to 5-year-olds, particularly those with a sturdier than average educational bent, will find a lot to love on Early Childhood Classics: Old Favorites with a New Twist. This release rids itself of tiresome attempts to turn performances of simple songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" into minor personal masterpieces and instead injects its de rigueur dose of creativity directly into familiar lyrics. For instance, while there's the usual cow and pig on Old MacDonald's farm, we're also introduced to Henrietta's House, where there's a cat, Zebediah's zoo with its tiger, and the puppy in Pamelina's pet shop. Similarly, instead of the usual "Pat-a-Cake" cliffhanger, where the cake's put in the oven and that's all she wrote, we get to hear the ding-ding-ding when it's done and layer on the frosting. The sequence of songs is repeated instrumentally after Palmer's interpretations to allow for sing-alongs and the dreaming up of more new lyrics--a useful device for caregivers who think like teachers (those who don't, though, can make use of clever movement and activity suggestions in the liner notes). Each song's wordplay and simple rhymes are catchy enough to fall into the can't-fail category when it comes to enhancing vocabulary, phonics, and vocabulary skills, and the surprise lyrics lend themselves nicely to attentive listening. Early Childhood Classics delivers old-fashioned fun in a satisfyingly unsplashy way. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
Here is a joyful collection of all time favorite activity songs for young children. Hap Palmer's unique renditions preserve the charm and simplicity of traditional songs while adding new, original lyrics and melodies to extend and enrich the familiar classics. The simplicity and repetition of these songs guarantee active participation by encouraging children to sing and move with the music. While having fun and participating actively, children develop motor and musical skills and learn about animals, counting, identification of body parts, and phonics. As children sing along, responding to the imagery and humor of the lyrics, reading readiness is also enhanced. Alliteration and rhyme develop a child's ear for the sounds of language - an important pre-reading skill.
These songs are developmentally appropriate for the very young child - infant to 5 years. However, the familiar melodies and contemporary arrangements also elicit surprisingly gusty participation from first and second grade students. A variety of musical styles adds new life to well known songs with swing, blue grass, country, classical, rock, pop, and blues arrangements.
Fifteen songs are presented with vocal interpretation. The sequence is then repeated instrumentally providing opportunities for singing along and creating new lyrics using children's ideas. The instrumental selections also familiarize children with the sounds of a variety of musical instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, flute, English horn, accordion, and a variety of percussion instruments such as conga drums, bougaraboo drum, ouiro, shaker, wood block and tambourine.
The instrumental versions of each song can be used in the following ways:
1. After children have learned words with the vocal version, they can sing along hearing only the music.
2. Children can create their own lyrics and sing the song using their ideas.
3. The music can accompany sessions in movement exploration and creative movement.
Suggestions for activities and variations are not limited to those presented in this guide book. There are endless possibilities awaiting your creative impulse.

All Time Favorites From My All Time Favorite Tenor.......2006-02-17
This CD is a rather mixed bag, some successes, some so-so. I was somewhat disappointed until -track 4- 'Sweetheart Tree.' Ahh... there's the Glenn Yarbrough I've been waitng for! He scores well again on -track 6- 'The Last Farewell' and also on the final four songs. Along with the already mentioned 'Sweetheart Tree' my other favorite on this CD is -track 12-, 'Scarlett Ribbons.'
Not a perfect album, but there's enough to make it more than worthwhile for the Yarbrough fan. Besides, no matter what he sings who could ever tire of that beautiful tenor voice?
Amazing sound.......2005-09-16
Great remakes of standards.......2002-04-11
I notice that, oddly, this is available in either 2 separate CDs (Vol.1 & Vol.2) or as a 2-CD set. For whatever reason, the 2 separate volumes, together, are... less than the double-album! No idea why, but that makes this and its companion disc a bargain!

This posthumous release gathers together the best-known inspirational numbers by "Gentleman" Jim Reeves, the East Texas troubadour who perfected traditional country's smoothed-out Nashville sound. With his inimitable velvety baritone, Reeves caresses each note in his signature laid-back style, performing with genuine confidence rather than smarm. "I'll Fly Away" marries Reeves's classic tones with Floyd Cramer-styled piano and "Padre of Old San Antone" captures the highly polished Tex-Mex flavor introduced by Reeves on his monster hit "Mexican Joe." "We Thank Thee," an eloquent ballad of gratitude, exemplifies the sophisticated country-pop that Reeves and contemporary Patsy Cline popularized, "In the Garden" shines brightly with ringing guitar coupled with Lawrence Welkian group background vocals, and "Trouble in the Amen Corner" is a first-class tearjerking talkie. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

Hardly an Oktoberfest Favorite.......2006-09-26
Knowing Oktoberfest in person, I can say, except for a few songs, none of them are played in a beer hall at the Oktoberfest in Munich.
There is at least one or more new "Wies'n Hits" every year and none are on this CD.
Don't waste your money buying this crap. It goes into the trash immediately.
Not a Very Good Example of Oktoberfest Music.......2006-05-02
This CD makes me so happy!.......2006-01-18
Hey, that's funny- we just started drinking, and this song they're playing here, not kidding, it's called "Drink Drink Drink"! Thanks for the hefeweizen, Kevin. No, it's good, really. It's delicious. Honestly, I'll admit it, I'm not that much of a hefeweizen guy, but this one's not bad at all. Wow, you drank that pretty quick there. Give me a second to catch up. Ahhhhh! That went down smoother than normal. Boy, my whistle's really wet now!
What? Chicken dance? No, not yet. It's too early. Besides, there aren't enough good-looking frauleins on the polka floor. Another beer? Sure, don't mind if I do! Ahhh! This beer's going down even better than the first. Wait a sec, do you hear that? It's "Mein Vater War Ein Wandersmann", the oompah-band version of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone"! Awesome! Polka meets Motown- sweeter than sweet! Yes, I'm positive you can't buy a Jager bomb here, Kevin. Jagermeister is from Germany, that's true. No, it's just that Oktoberfest is a family event, they aren't going to sell anybody shots of liquor and energy drink. I bet you can't even get hard liquor here. Well of course I want another beer, are you crazy?
"Zum Volksfest"! Yes, yes! Onward to Zum Volksfest! That's means "the people's fest" in German, Kev. I'm really starting to get into the swing of it now. Taking German in high school really paid off. Hey, remind me to eat a bratwurst later, would ya?
No, you're right. The Germans did some pretty bad stuff too. No, I hear ya, loud and clear. Of course I think it's terrible. Honestly, you're preaching to the choir, Kevin. Hey, you wanna know what's not terrible? This here hefeweizen in this here plastic beer stein! Well, I must say that I'm disinclined to argue with you at this juncture- if you wish to go to "die bierstube" to get us a refill, far be it from me to stand in the way of your mission.
Ahhhhhh! That's good stuff. Hey, is that "Bayerisch Geschichten"! This song's awesome! No, it is a polka. No, I don't know what it means. I mean, I kinda do but not, like... oh, excuse me, sir. Didn't mean to stumble into your table and spill beer on your daughter's shirt. I tripped over that darn cable there. Really, I apologize. Hey, let me buy you a beer to make up for it! No? Are you sure? Are you a real German? No, only kidding sir. Well, have a good Oktoberfest all the same!
Hey, let's have another beer. Kevin, what time do we need to get back to work? We're about to be late? Really? No, I'm good, still got quite a bit left in this one. We should think about finishing up and heading on out? Well, all right, but if you want another one, then I'll have another one with you. It's a beautiful day after all. I don't think God made days like this in order for us to be cramped up inside of our cubicles! Well, if all you want is water, at least hang out for a bit while I have one more...
No, of course we need campaign finance reform! No, the lobbyists screw our nation's affairs so royally! It's not that... it's that we're up to our necks in a huge pile of... oh, pardon me there, sir. You okay? Didn't mean to bump into you. No, I'm only a quarter German actually. My grandparents came over at the turn of the century, but I'm an honest-to-god German through and through! Ellis Island? Sure, you bet. Where are you from? No, let me buy you a beer! Hey Kevin- this guy's from Vienna! Yeah, I know, here of all places! What's you name, dude? Felix? You're officially on my good list Felix! Prosit!
Felix is freakin' awesome! Hey, say what you just said to me, Felix. Did you get that, Kevin? You know what it means? Aw, man! This guy's real funny. Hey thanks for the beer. You, me, and Felix- we're shutting this place down tonight! That's it, end of discussion. Oh, of course it's all right, Kevin!
Polka music's overrated. Wait, I mean underrated! No, stop laughing, I meant underrated! I mean, seriously, I mean it when I say, wait, this song's awesome too... wait, where was I?.. hold on... yeah no I mean that every other country's musical heritage uses the accordion. No, Kevin, it's not time to go back to work. Everyone else here understands that. Why don't you understand that? Oh, wait, you're going to be Mister High n' Mighty on me? Well, I've got two words for you, Kevin- Chicken Dance, Mother****er! Yeah, that's right. You know what... hey, huh?... hey Felix, see those two frauleins over there, shut up, Kevin, seriously, Felix, do you see them? Yeah, no... well I mean totally, they totally are in need of some German male companionship. This German love train needs a conductor!
Sure, I'm mad those girls walked away. But the best part about Oktoberfest, Felix, is that you get to celebrate your German heritage. I mean, the best thing about being German and all, no, shut up and listen..., no I don't know where my friend is, thank you. And those girls were total Weibchen. You know what I'm saying! You and me, Felix! You're my guy!
Dude, I do not know how I plan on getting home. What's your plan? You gotta car? Hey, you think they got Jager bombs here? Man, that would be so awesome at this juncture! Dude, for real!
I'm gonna see if the band knows "Winds of Change" by Scorpion. That'd be so awesome! Germany, dude.... it's... wha? You want another cerveza? I mean, beer? Just say the word, monsieur. After all, you're my guy! As is Germany!
