As the name implies, these are ten of Les Negresses Vertes's (A French rock/gypsy/punk band) best-known tracks remixed by several heavyweight producers/DJ's including Gangstarr, Massive Attack, Norman Cook, Clive Martin, and Kwanzaa Posse. The overall success of the endeavor lies in the empathy between the creative forces, with neither overriding the other. Consequently the results are some monster beats ranging from hip hop to reggae to funk with Negresses Vertes's inimitable good time stamp left intact on all the 10 tracks. Choosing one over the other depends on individual taste; the inspiration stretches between sultry flamenco ("Sous Le Soleil De Bodega (Di Moko)") to all out thrash (William Orbit's remix of "Zobi La Mouche") with many stops in between. Several tracks have more than one remix, providing interesting comparisons of the art of remixing and potentials, but every track is a winner in some way or another.

for your late night listening pleasure.......2007-01-25
Esther Perel, the therapist who wrote Mating in Captivity, has a radical explanation for marital bed death. The problem, she says, is not that couples need to communicate more --- it's that they communicate too much. What they need is less chat and more distance, the better to generate some fantasies about their partner. If they must talk about their relationship, she writes, they should each get a hotmail account and use it only to write their lover. Oh, and only to talk about romance.
Interesting ideas. And ones you might think about the next time it's "date night" and there you are, Barry White CD in hand.
Ah, dear Barry. The maestro of love. Swirling violins, that butterfat voice, the rock-me lyrics. His is a formula that never fails: You melt into one another. Velvet ensues....
On the other hand, in the spirit of Dr. Perel, you might think: Barry White....been there, done that. A lot.
And you might have a treasonous thought: Is there anything else?
Not that there is anything wrong with Barry White, I hasten to say: He's in the rotation here as well, in keeping with my philosophy that cliches are not to be avoided, they're to be kissed on the mouth.
There's a recent addition to my collection of music for late night: remixes of some of the greater hits of Les Negresses Vertes. Remixes, as you know, are generally done to make music more suitable for dancing. That means the songs will be heavy on percussion, light on subtle lyrics. If you are a delicate soul --- or if your partner is a sensitive creature, prone to headaches --- read no further: This stuff is not for you.
Okay, so who are Les Négresses Vertes? In the 1980s, these French musicians were clowns and acrobats in the Cirque Zingaro. They got their name in 1987, when they dyed their hair green and went out clubbing. A bouncer threw them out, shouting "Sortez d'ici, les négresses vertes" ("Get out of here, you green n----s"). It was an amusing insult; why not elevate it to the band's name?
There was also a kind of sense in the name; this group had astonishing range. Spanish and gypsy rhythms, a splash of reggae and rai, a spoonful of medieval harmonies that melted into a hora --- add inconsequential lyrics and you had quite the show. The band was hot in Paris, huge in Beirut.
These remixes from their golden years --- 1987 to 1993 --- are destined for nights when you've had a tequila too many, nights when animal instinct trumps the spiritual connection. Oh, there are quiet moments and subtle effects, but they're just for texture. Fundamentally, this is about pile-driver percussion. I could go on, but surely you get the drift.
I have field-tested this music and pressed it on friends. Reaction is fairly uniform: In the morning, neither partner can quite look at the other. But that is not to say that Les Negresses Vertes have made anyone unhappy.
mon dieu!.......2003-08-21
Sometimes when one drops with this kind of stuff, just wonders why does bland mainstream music dares to exist? One of the best from all times, really I mean it!
Viva La France.......2003-08-20
I heard this CD in a store in London, and quite honestly, it kept me shopping. The songs are upbeat and fun, especially tracks 5, 6, and 7. This CD is for the seasoned taste who truly love music. Although I don't speak French, this CD is in heavy rotation on my stereo.
a definite classic of my collection.......1999-05-25
I first heard this album back in late '94 or early '95, when a friend brought it back from Paris. I've been listening to it ever since, have never tired of it. It also became a staple during my college DJ days. After begging a visiting French friend to come bearing LNV discs, I became a dedicated fan. Truly great stuff.

Once upon a time, a remix was an attempt by a producer to make a track more danceable--to pump up the bass, drop an infectious tambourine loop over the steady 4/4 rhythm, and add some echo to spark the crowd's buzz. But in the hands of the Intelligent Dance Music crowd--the style, pioneered by Warp Records, of applying dance-floor technologies to armchair music--the remix took on the in-joke mentality of a postmodern literary trickster. Tracks--not songs, tracks (if they started off as songs they inevitably got turned into tracks)--were pulled inside out, pushed through a filter that replaced beauty with noise and wrung it out to dry. The two-CD remix portion of Warp's 10th anniversary series takes this aesthetic as far as it can possibly go. This is contrariness squared. Oval applies his patented skipping-and-stripping CD methodology to Squarepusher's jittery drill and bass. Four Tet splices his disembodied reconstruction of a jazz rhythm section onto one of Aphex Twin's oddly effectless ambient works. Jim O'Rourke subjects one of Autechre's stop-start sonic mazes to his obsessively detail-oriented studio savvy. The result certainly has a hothouse quality to it, but hey, when you're not out on the dance floor, you've gotta work up a sweat somehow. --Jeff Salamon

Certainly not for the Casual Listener but essential for fans.......2004-02-20
To Celebrate Warp Records 10 year anniversary, they issued 3 double disc albums, detailing they're discography through the 10 years of the label ("Classics", "Remixes, "Influences"). This issue (Remixes) takes existing Warp classics, and lets loose some Warp & other artists to rebuild the tracks. With the exception of a couple of tracks, virtually all the remixed tracks here are surprisingly downbeat, and wonderfully brilliant for it. "Plaid's" remix of "Autechre's - Vletrmx" is given the usual sparkling electronic melodic's we come to expect from Plaid. "Four Tet" smooth the edges off "Aphex Twin's - Untitled" track, turning it into sprawling instrumental greatness. "Stereolab's" reimaging "Boards of Canada's - Kid for today", with equally pleasing results. The only criticism that could be levelled at this release is that it's geared to Warp enthusiasts and requires extensive knowledge of the labels to get the best out of it. But as a definitive collection of remix work, this'll take some beating.
what a tripp.......2001-06-11
This album is a wild ride, and I love every minute of it. First off lets start with the cover design. This is something I see as very crucial to a good and complete album. A good cover should in a sence bring a visual representation to what the music sounds like. In this case it does so to a T. This sounds like the cover. Hard high tech with manipulation, which makes the fammilar, alien. This is a collection of some of the Warp lebels greatest remixes. The music selection is great. It ranges from hardcore IDM, to flat out experimental, to funk..... Well anyway eclectic is cool and what Warp is all about. I reccomend this to anyone into the Warp label (which is obvious) But I also reccomend this to people that really enjoy experimental music and IDM becuase what you getting here are some heavly modulated and reconstucted songs and all are of the highest quality. The songs range from having a very mechanical sound to a very environemental texture and even having a sweet and almost innocent flavour! Despite the wild array of styles they all seem to sound like the cover looks which in my opinion is a true sign of a good album or collection.
Nice Subtle Mix For All.......2000-07-29
I am a big fan of comp and re-mix albums and this one definetely falls into a mix of it's own. Matador Records and Warp have come together to make a fairly decent album. Mostly ambient and low down tracks but very nicely arranged for sure. There are some nice heart racing break beat tracks, but for the most part laid back and spaced out. I would definetely reccommend this to anybody that likes good beats mixed with space age rythym
The BEST mixing the BEST.......2000-05-15
Out of the 3 box sets warp released, this is by far the one worth buying. Classics and Influences unfortunately showcased warp BEFORE they signed their good artists. But warp 10+3 doesn't dissapoint. Great remixes of great songs. Aphex, Autechre, Squarepusher, LFO, Plaid, Bogdan all remixing each others stuff. I especially like the remixes of aphex twin's and autechre's stuff, while the oval squarepusher mix fell way short. Yes the album may have some slumps, but it showcases the whole WARP crew in their full, and shows not only their capability to make the best music in the world, but the ability to adapt to others styles and make great mixes in the warp TRADITION. Favs are remix of SAWII #1, Plaid Veltmx, Bogdan mixing Autechre, among TONS of others. This isn't the best album ever, but it sure is a good buy for a two disc set. And bad vibes go out to one of the other reviewers who said warp is at its all time low. If you ask me, they are conforming perfectly with the times. The future holds some great releases.
An amazing.... thing........2000-04-29
First, Warp is by far the greatest, most innovative record label in the world, and I applaude them for everything they have brought into the world of music. As for the 10th Anniversary collection, the Remixes CD set was my personal favorite. It put new spins on some of the greatest works out there and I never get bored of listening to it. If you love anything off of Warp, you need the entire 10th Anniversary collection. It's essential. You don't know what you're missing.

A Good Review.......2004-09-09
everybody hertz.
i remember hating this release too. it was cheap when i bought it, so i didn't care much. it being years later now, i think it truly deserves a second listen.
first off, there's a neptunes remix on this thing; don't be light. which was out before they're (~)household-name like status these days.
the oizo mix of 'light' is fantastic. when beck comes in, the beat is more than addictive.
i admit that jack lahana's remix is over the top.
but the modjo cover of people in the city does a good job in helping make up for it. it's a lounge track, sort of, with full instrumentation and a lush breakdown.
listen again. or respect their process as innovaters.
too much filler.......2003-12-07
The edits are a waste of space, and B I T C H E S in the C I T Y is kinda lame. I like the ozio remix of How Does It Make You Feel, and The Way You Look Tonight is one of my favourite Air songs. But even that song doesn't sound like its finished. I think some of these tracks would have made good b-sides to compliment singles, while sparing us of the trash and filler that takes up half the cd.
Stay away from this one.......2003-02-10
This album is a really crummy deal. It contains remixes from the previous album "10.000 Hz Legend". And bad ones at that. If your idea of fun is five different versions of "Don't be Light", then by all means, buy the album. If not, then stay away from it. Let's just hope it's the evil record corporation and not the boys in the band who've come up with this scam.
Boy do I hate this album.......2003-01-06
First came the brilliant Moon Safari, then the excellent Premiers Symptomes, then the wierd but vaguely interesting Virgin Suicides. Then Air released 10,000Hz - tolerable but not very good... and now this! Yuck. This album is just terrible. Amazingly bad. Most of it is insanely repetitious and boring. That which rises above boring is downright unpleasant. I had to turn it off 3/4 of the way through because it was giving me a headache.
Avoid at all costs. Dont even accept this disk for free, unless you need a coaster.
air remixes - both good and bad + 1 new track + 1 great vid.......2002-02-21
this particular compilation of remixes, remakes, and covers of a few of air's tracks off of 10,000 hertz legend is all right. the track remixed are: 'don't be light', 'how does it make you feel?', and 'people in the city'. mr. oizo gets things started with his remix of 'don't be light', which is simply amazing. using his glitch dub tactics, he filters any cuteness from the track, and throws it in the french gutter where he resides and likes it. the eerie ending with the vocal part is disturbing. adrian sherwood and modjo provide some nice covers of 'how does it make you feel?' and 'people in the city' respectively. the neptunes tear up 'don't be light' for their own maniacal purposes. the hacker develops a return to the rave with 'don't be light', and the malibu remix is a nice, flowing piece of electronic brilliance. these are the gems of the ep. however, astralwerks still doesn't seem to understand that no one likes edits, as they place two edits on this ep for 'don't be light' (as if the fact thomas bangalter doing the editting grants any kudos) and 'how does it make you feel?' they waste track space. also, jack lahana's remix of 'people in the city' is just shock rock at it's worst. poor production, horrible lyrics (b.i.t.c.h.e.s in the city is not funny after a minute), and it's way too long. however, the cd rounds out nicely with 'the way you look tonight', a return to the mellow for air and very well produced. the live video is nice for all your air fans, and does the track ('people in the city') justice.
