If there's a single early Chieftains album to get, this is it. It ranks among the best of their recordings from the 1960s when the group formed. Though containing fairly run-of-the-mill Irish material, it's far more spirited and inventive than Chieftains 1, thus illustrating the solid foundation of talent that has supported the Chieftains' music since the ensemble's inception. Underated Treasure.......2003-08-30

This Cd is delightful. I love Leslet Garrett's voice but most of all, I love the selection. This cd is great for introducing any true lover of opperetta to some truly great operas and composers. I originally bought this cd for a musical glimpse at Sullivans 'The Contrabandista' and discovered the beautiful worlds of Offenbach and Lehar and so many more that can not be heard except in pieces (many of which only exist on this cd such as 'The Contrabandista' and 'The Opera Ball' and 'The Dancing Years'). I recommend that anyone who loves opera buy this album. But on a final note, all of the songs are sung in english, even those not originally done so.

What a remarkable voice, it's deserves your attention.......2000-11-05

If you adore great singing by a super star this cd is for you. What a voice! Everytime I hear it, I loose my breath i'm so excited. I tell you, there are not many voices like this around. When you find one you have better latch on to it for there may not be another.

The main concern I had for this cd was the repertoire. It had too many songs that I didn't particulary like. If the repertoire had of been better this cd would definately have been a 5. I will say this, Lesley's voice was super even on the songs that I didn't like.

I know a lot of people are unfamiliar with Lesley, since she lives in the U.K., but she deserves you attention. She is a great talent.

Recommendation: Despite giving this cd a low rating, I still would like to recommend it.

Traditional Gaelic music.......2006-02-20

Before they became household names and collaborators with the famous, the Chieftains started out as an all instrumental traditional Irish band. I was lucky enough to pick up this in a perfect shape vinyl about a year ago (so I can't speak to the quality of the CD sound). The music here is old fashioned Gaelic music played on old fashioned Gaelic instruments and played very well. Those who enjoy this type of music will be very pleased with this.

No Hype -- Just the Finest "Best of " Chieftains Collection.......2002-08-02

There are several "best-of" Chieftains compilations, released on a handful of different labels, but this one is the best. This record, as well as the other Claddagh Chieftains releases, tends to get overlooked in the record store bins in favor of the the flashier Columbia and RCA discs. This is a shame, since the Chieftains did some of their purest, most exhilarating recording for Claddagh.

These recordings were made long before the so-called "Celtic Revival" of the Riverdance-era, for a traditional music label who respected the music too much to march a never-ending parade of celebrity singers through the Chieftains' studio or design New Agey covers for their albums. The bare- bones production on this disc does a far better job of capturing the Chieftains' energy and inventive arrangements than the later state-of-the-art recordings. This is most apparent on "Carolan's Concerto", a tune the Chieftains have recorded several times in their career with the likes of James Galway and the Irish National Orchestra, but never as well, and to such dramatic effect, as they did here -- playing by themselves, in a quiet studio without benefit of reverb or extra musicians, elevating Carolan's simple tune to a soaring masterpiece.

It was one of those days... I did not like to do anything. Anything period. Well, anything does not includ listening to music on net! I discovered The Chieftans by surfing around the net!!! It changed my mode like a flash. Wish I knew how to dance with it.
