Album Description
Featuring original music composed by Alberto Iglesias. Adapted from the best-seller John le Carre's romantic thriller, two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz head the cast of "The Constant Gardener." In a remote area of northern Kenya, the dedicated activist Tessa Quayle (Weisz) is found brutally murdered. Her travelling companion, a local doctor, appears to have fled the scene and the evidence points to a crime of passion. Sandy Woodrow (Danny Huston), Sir Bernard Pellegrin (Bill Nighy), and other member of the British High Commission assume that Tessa's widower, their mild-mannered colleague Justin Quayle (Fiennes) will leave the matter to their discretion. They could not be more wrong... Featuring music performed by acclaimed Kenyan percussionist and Real World recording artist Ayub Ogada, Alberto Iglesias' ("La Mala Educacion," "The Dancer Upstairs," "Todo Sobre Mi Madre") lush score evokes the film's compelling African and European landscapes.

Beautiful Score.......2007-04-24
For someone like me who purchases soundtracks for the score to use for dance & skating programs, this soundtrack definitely made it into my collection. My only minus to the soundtrack is that there isn't much variety among the many tracks. But I am still able to work around it.
Only track 13.......2007-03-31
In my opinion, only track 13 is worthy of buy this CD. Track 13 is beautiful, other than that extremely depressing music...... Once again track 13 is the most beautiful adn touching music that I have ever heard!
Great Service.......2007-02-12
My CD was delivered in a very timely manner and the product was in great shape upon arrival.
A nice reminder of a very moving movie.......2007-01-12
Favorite songs are the ones by Ayub Ogada. I think it's wonderful that we found his music through this film.
it captures the spirit of the movie.......2006-11-10
I like this soundtrack because it reminds me of the movie, which I loved. I am not sure I would appreciate it much if I hadn't seen the movie and didn't have pictures in my mind for each theme. It is redolent of Africa though and that in itself is satisfying.

Sudan's Hamza El Din is a master of the oud (a fretless forerunner of the lute), and the man who first introduced Americans to the instrument in the '60s. On this, his first album in three years, his playing is as wonderful and mesmerizing as ever--you can almost feel his fingers touching the strings. While some of the pieces are formal and classical in a Middle Eastern manner, on others he takes flight, using his virtuosity to travel through the whole gamut of emotions in a way that would leave most guitarists in the dust. It all ends on an odd note, however, with a piece that's lovely, but almost New Age in its sweeping melodicism, and which might just (finally) break El Din to a wider audience. --Chris Nickson

A rare jewel.......2007-04-18
This cd has incredibly natural sound, and is very, very beautiful. Deep dark rich bass notes, soft percussion, soulful voice.... Just awesome.
WONDERFUL OUD AND VOICE.......2005-07-16
Hamza El Din is quickly becoming famous. I bought this album first and really liked it but it was not until I saw PASSION IN THE DESERT that I really began to appreciate his mastery in a new light. All his albums are great.
outstanding is an understatement.......2004-07-20
"A wish" is a master piece. I listened to some reviews about Hamza El Din prior to purchasing the CD and I thought that all excellent comments were still uderstatements to the beauty of this music. Highly recommended.
one of my favorite CDs!.......2003-05-01
A WISH conveys a maturity in Hamza's stylings. I'm glad to see he's still creating such treasures as on this album.

Everything El Din does turns to gold. This is a wonderful sample of the beautiful music of Nubia, of which Hamza is their greatest sample.

Music from Hamza is a True Gift.......2001-03-06
Al Oud plays from the start like a well scripted concert. Each song takes hold of the ear, guiding us to the next. The transition from each track glides without seams. Hamza gives the listener a perfect balance between his simple and beautiful oud playing and a voice so gently harmonious. Hamza El Din is a technical master of oud and voice. This is why he can give us his true expression. What he wants to pour into the listener, is as easy to him as drinking water. This is a true gift.

This is an excellent example of Nubian music, El Din is a master. I remember this album from when it first came out, my dad bought it and it soon became a favorite of our family. I am pleased to re-discover this treasure as an adult.

Nubians in Egypt are know rejuvenating their centuries old culture that is older than egypt aka Kemet. Many people donot know the nubians even exist any more, but they still continue like the fellahin in Southern Egypt their ancient lifestyle. I just love the way Hamaza combines the enchanting sounds of the OUD,and breathes life into the ancient strings. The OUD is not a arab instrument, but in fact a instrument that goes back to the period of the Old Kingdom. The arabs discovered of course at about the same time the Phophet muhammed died and the arabs started to bring islam to the rest of the world through the sword. I wish though that Hamaza would bring the kissar into more focus because it is a beautiful nubian instrument.
Buy this album because it is a document of a culture that once was,but know can only be seen in museums and exhibitons.

Product Description
A collection of r&b, soul, jazz, pop, world and gospel songs by Berklee College of Music students and staff to raise awareness of the plight of women and children affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. We Are All Connected is the culmination of a collaborative effort engaging many members of the Berklee community. A delegation of Boston women traveled to the Sudan with Mercy Corps where the group heard firsthand accounts of the violence that has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions to camps. These stories inspired the group to take action to produce a full-length CD.
Guest Artists Include: Meshell Ndegeocello, Walter Beasley and Vinnie Colaiuta
Customer Reviews:
Just listen to the voices.......2007-01-26
Very powerful statement by an extraordinary group of young musicians. In one song, you can hear the voices of the children of Darfur. It is haunting yet inspiring to hear the voices crying out for fear of extinction, but at the same time at peace with themselves.
We Are All Connected ... All Music, One Voice, One Powerful release of music.......2006-11-22
From beginning to the end this compact disc is wonderful! All the colors and sounds of voices and instruments come together in a sweet blend to tell the story of the victims in the Darfur region of Sudan. Stories of hope, survival, and longing. Songs such as: Love Myself Instead, We Shall Heal, Home, and Why only wets the appetite and leaves the listener wanting more, looking introspectively, and asking questions.
Kudos to Berklee College of Music, the leadership of Roger Brown, and the inspiration of Linda Mason ... We Are All Connected is an incredible collection of music to raise awareness in support of those who are suffering in Darfur.
Powerful music for the most worthy of causes!.......2006-11-21
Wow! This CD blew me away. I am so impressed with the students, faculty and staff of Berklee College of Music for lending their time and talents to produce this benefit CD for Darfur. The music is so diverse and inspiring too! Everything from jazz to techno to R&B, world and country. I love the way they wove the voices of the Sudanese women and children into their music. [..] Hats off to Berklee, their leader Roger Brown and his wife Linda Mason for bringing this topic to their campus, and inspiring the making of this CD. I love that I can buy an incredible CD of music, and support a cause that is near and dear to my heart. Proceeds go to MercyCorps "Darfur Fund", and I plan to buy several more to share with friends and family this holiday season. Do something good for your soul and for the good of humanity and buy this CD!
Music for my ears and soul for my heart.......2006-11-20
I came upon this CD as an activist for the women of Darfur. I was familiar with the work of Mercy Corps and knew that any project they were involved with was worth my money. I searched for really effective ways that I could help stop the atrocitites in the Sudan and was quite pleased to have come upon this CD.
Well then, I actually listened to it. It's great. I mean, really great. I know Berklee is a very reputable music school so I figured it would be good, but I can honestly say I was really moved by the music. I was psyched that not only had I helped the women of Darfur by buying the CD but I was also proud to be supporting Berklee students and faculty.
As a result of the music being so good, I am going to give this CD to several people on my holiday list this year. Of course it's also nice to give gifts just for the humanitarian aspect, so it's great to know that with this CD I'll have both bases covered.
We Are All Connected.......2006-11-18
We hear so many stories in the news about atrocities happening around the world that we become inured to them, and learn to separate ourselves from what we hear completely. We become spectators instead of participants. CDs like this one remind us that regardless of the distance between continents, there are connections between people.
Hearing the recordings of women and children in internally displaced person camps in Darfur incorporated into the compositions of Berklee's music community reinvigorates those connections, and reminds us that we do have a voice, no matter where we live. And knowing that the proceeds from the CD benefit Mercy Corps' Darfur programs makes this an easy purchase to make. I'm sending it to everyone on my Christmas list.

Unique among Middle Eastern artists, El Din is a Nubian oud player and singer from the Sudan who studied his craft in Cairo, and fashioned the oud--normally used for accompaniment or in ensembles--into a solo instrument, combining Nubian and Arabic musical gestures. Eclipse--produced by Grateful Dead drummer and world-music champion Mickey Hart--exploits elastic rhythms and repetitive motifs in moody, majestic pieces like "Helalisa," the lovelorn song of an Egyptian field hand, and "Your Love Is Ever Young," inspired by Egypt's late queen of song, Um Kalthoum. Fans of Turkish oud masters (like the great Udi Hrant) will find El Din's penetrating tone and attack familiar, though his arrangements and vocal accompaniments are a different beast altogether, producing an evocative, melancholy music that draws on several traditions simultaneously. --James Rotondi
Customer Reviews:
Good as usual.......2006-11-08
Hamsa El Din is a beautiful person and it shows through his music. His passing from this plane was a great loss to all. I enjoy this CD as well as his many others. I think that if you are a lover of Nubian music, you will enjoy this offering, or if you are not familiar with the genre will find it a good one to start with!
Sublime.......2006-07-12
Nothing I can say about this CD will do it justice; it's superb. Simultaneously complex, clean, hypnotic, seductive, and reverant. El Din's voice and singing are impeccable and the instrumental work is brilliant.
If you enjoy this CD, then I highly recommend the work of Catherine Braslavsky and Joseph Rowe, particularly the CD "From Jerusalem to Cordoba". [...]
'HELALISA" is the passion of the desert.......2005-07-16
After seeing PASSION OF THE DESERT (which I saw ten times I was so mesmerized) I immediately bought this album which is the background of the movie. The song I could hear forever was "Helalisa" which reminds me of the great movie. Hamza is one of the greatest Middle Eastern musicans ever--it's the simplicity of just the oud and his sultry voice.
Ancient and timeless . . ........2004-06-27
Hamza El Din is one of those amazing performers that you have been searching for your entire life. His vocal and musical abilities are sublime. At the same time, his music sounds both ancient and accessible. Hamza's music is meditational. The songs will gently paint pictures in your mind of the rolling Nubian desert scenery. Much is said of his musical abilities, but the rhythm is also a highlight as the doumbeks and handclaps add to the trance inducive sounds. His voice is very deep (like an Egyptian Johnny Cash) and his oud style expressive. Traditionally, the oud is an accompanying instrument and is almost never played by itself and usually does little or no improvisation. It is Hamza who can maintain the integrity of this music while being an innovator at the same time.
For those of you who know the Grateful Dead, you will know that the band worked with Hamza beginning with their trip to Egypt in 1978. Throughout the 70s and 90s, Hamza joined the band on stage many times -and for good reason. In the new millennium, Hamza still plays with Mickey Hart's Planet Drum.
Hamza has many great albums like "Songs of the Nile" (JVC, 1982) and "Lily of the Nile" (Water Lily Acoustics, 1990) but this is his best. While I've heard a few songs here played on other albums, there's something special about "Eclipse." The only explanation is producer Mickey Hart.
Did you know that the oud is the root instrument where the modern electric guitar comes from? Travel back to your roots, to the collective roots of humanity and listen to something that is both ancient and timeless.
Ruler of the Oud!.......2003-01-08
Hamza's Eclipse is his best album. Only 5 tracks but each is a gem. Song #3 Olin Arageed is a Nubian wedding song played once in a person's lifetime as they exchange their vows. You can almost feel thousands of years of history as you listen to it. All of Hamza's albums are great - but sound similar to each other. If I were to buy just one, Eclipse is the way to go. Produced by Mickey Hart it sounds terrific and somewhat slick - but not overly so.

True Sounds of Beautiful Egypt!.......2000-01-10
This CD represents authentic sounds of the real Egypt! From the sounds of the streets of Luxor to the haunting melody of the rebaba, this is an excellent choice in the real sounds of Upper Egypt. A must for your collection if you want to hear authentic Egyptian music!
Great Sounds of Traditional Egypt!.......1999-04-26
If you have ever visited Upper Egypt and experienced the wonderful music created by the local musicians, then this is the CD for you. I have been searching for traditional music of the Upper Egypt area and finally found it. From the opening sounds of the horse and buggy and street sounds in Luxor to the haunting and melodic sounds of the rababah to the beat of the tablah, it is a wonderful collection of songs. I have visited Upper Egypt twice and had the great opportunity to hear these musicians in person. This CD brought back great memories of that experience in sound!! A must for your collection and I highly recommend it. I hope to find more like it!
