R&B with tempo: Justin Timberlake resurrected it, and it's proving way more influential than that other lost commodity--sexy--he claimed to be bringing back in 2006 on FutureSex/LoveSounds. Timberlake is to Robin Thicke what 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys were to a band like O-Town, in fact: he pretty much made it all possible. But even though it took one blue-eyed soulster with a hot look and an achy falsetto to bang down the door for another, Thicke presents a convincing case here that he had the goods to get us grooving all along: Evolution is a classy disc that tiptoes up to its listeners, first with an elegant duet with Faith Evans ("Got 2 Be Down"), next with a slick lament that wouldn't sound out of place on a Boyz II Men disc ("Complicated"), and then with a sweet plea that commands a finger-snap ("Would That Make U Love Me"). By the time we reach the long, sweeping lullaby that is the final track, "Angels," we've also had a taste of Thicke's swaggering side ("I Need Love," "Cocaine"), his hip-hop loving side ("All Night Long" and "Shooter," both with Lil Wayne), and the side that fantasizes about 1950s Latin ballrooms ("Everything I Can't Have," a hot tamale of a number that commands a visual if ever there was one: it's impossible to hear this song without imagining a raven-haired woman with a red rose between her teeth). Despite the range of moods on display, they're all in service to Thicke's inner R&B smoothie, and they all brush up against the ear with something like affection. Hard as it will be for listeners of a certain age to get past knowing that Thicke is the son of Alan Thicke, the actor who did his part to cheese up 1980s TV with the sitcom Growing Pains, they're going to have to: with his fan base swelling by the second, the evolution of Robin Thicke is going to be a deservedly loud one. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Robin Thicke - The Evolution of Robin Thicke.......2007-07-29

Robin Thicke's second studio album was "The Evolution of Robin Thicke" (2006). I only recently came across Thicke's music and have been really impressed. This sixteen track album features guest appearances from Faith Evans, Lil Wayne & Pharell. The album's opener is a soulful duet with the talented Faith Evans on "Got 2 To Be Down". Thicke then looks to change, find a lost love and overcome his blues on another standout in "Complicated". "Would That Make You Love Me" another solid track leads up to Thicke's second single "Lost Without U" an excellent track which vibes real well. The upbeat "Ask Myself" follows, then Thicke provides something different collaborating with Rapper Lil Wayne on "All Night Wrong". Thicke then changes things up providing the refreshing and creative "Everything I Can't Have" backed by some distinct instrumentals. Slow ballad's follow in "Teach U A Lesson" & "I Need Love". The first Robin Thicke track I ever heard was "Wanna Love U Girl" a memorable collaboration with Pharell, backed by a bouncy beat the two provide an enjoyable track. The album's third single is "Can U Believe", Thicke sings soulfully to his love backed by some laidback production. Thicke's second collaboration with Lil Wayne is "Shooter". Found it interesting that Thicke delved into R & B/Rap collobarations. I recently watched a youtube video which had Thicke collaborating live with 50 Cent for an outstanding track called "Follow Me Lead" which will be featured on 50 Cent's upcoming solo album. Thicke keeps things moving providing the upbeat "Cocaine" and elevates with "2 The Sky". This album is full of highlights, the substantial "Lonely World" is yet another, Thicke sings with passion, telling different people's stories while lacing the track with some smooth vocals. The album's closer and longest track is "Angels" an exceptional slow jam. The variety of quality music that Thicke provides throughout "The Evolution of Robin Thicke" makes this one a keeper for newcomers and dedicated fans alike.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-23

This is a wonderful album. If you're a fan of neyo soul and smooth r&b you will fall in love with this record. Robin Thicke's voice will sooth and relax you on some of the slower tracks. The upbeat tempos are sure to get you on your feet. Robin is all about making good music. This is a fantastic buy. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars An exeptional SOPHOMORE effort that has appeal for the masses.......2007-06-19

The measure of a good artist is how well he/she is able to transcend genders and age groups, garnering support from both young and old. Robin Thicke's "Evolution" is just one of those albums for there is enough of the hip-hop "flava" to satisfy the teens/twenty-somethings while he throws in enough "old school" sounds to lasso the respective groups' parents AND grandparents.

It's obvious that Thicke's channeling a certain Mr. Gaye for the young soulster effortlessly jumps from falsetto to his natural tenor, just as the legendary singer did. Thicke accompanies himself on background, a technique that Gaye often utilized.

Of course the album highlight is the ubiquitous hit "Lost Without U." But, as hinted before, the remaining fifteen tracks are so varied that there is most definitely something for everyone.

The only detractor is the choice of colors for the liner notes: gold writing on a black background. With the print being as small as it is, it is most difficult to read the lyrics, production info, or the acknowledgments.

And there are some of us that enjoy reading them!

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE AND JUST PLAIN HORRIBLE.......2007-06-15

You need to list "0" stars here, there is no option for that? Because this is what I give this CD. I don't think anybody who can ACTUALLY HEAR could think this guy can sing?? Anyone can sing in this fake high screeching voice, just try it, you'll see. He's taking everyone for a ride with this. People will buy anything today and think it's cool (because they want to look cool.) but this guy just ain't happening. This guy is far from cool; he's laughable. I can't believe people are this stupid to buy this act. This is a no-talent guy riding his dad's coat tails. Oh brother. What saddens me the most is how stupid people really are to like this [...] and call it music? What's the draw in making some adult man sound and sing like a five year old?? This guy's a joke. Either that or else everyone's gone deaf. I actually cringe with embarrassment when I hear this guy.

The jury's still out on discs with spoken-word interludes. Should the music always speak for itself? Or is the occasional verbal breakdown useful? Ciara, R&B's most tantalizing goodie (without the two shoes), makes clear on The Evolution that she prizes the chance to tell listeners how it is--four between-song snippets dot the disc. But her momentary digressions will probably make up more than a few minds that Janet Jackson, and only Janet Jackson, ought to be allowed to ramble before the mic: when the music is this hot, it doesn't matter how sincere or saucy the dialogue--it's a distraction. The Evolution is a door-buster of a CD--Lil Jon gets the speakers jumping in milliseconds on opener "That's Right," Ciara dabbles in Curtis Mayfield-style creative phrasing on "Promise" (and it works), and Chamillionaire pumps "Get Up," a play-it-loud club number, full of hip-hop heat. Helpers and inspirers aside, though, this is Ciara's party, and she knows how to please a guest. "Get In, Fit In" finds her putting the sizzle in a space-age soundscape. And the buzz and fuzz of "I Proceed" plump her breathy vocals enough to put a point across, that being that few modern songstresses work a beat better. The striking part, and the part she should take into account the next time she's considering a disc with interludes, is that she didn't even need to tell us so. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars All and all - good cd - Something for everyone.......2007-08-03

I love the cd. It is for ALL listeners not just the kiddies. I have a 9 year old and some of the songs out now are horrid lyrically and murder on the ears. Someone mentioned Crush. Songs like that remind us that everyone can have those feelings-kids and adults-listen to the lyrics. It is called attraction...denial...insecurity...etc. Few songs I don't' like...but I can even tolerate those. It is one of those cds you don't feel like you have to skip every other song. I could do without the lessons; however, they may be just the encouragement someone else needs. That is why cd players have a skip button...

5 out of 5 stars Like a Boy? How?.......2007-07-23

Double standards are the topic for this song, and how "boys" hold the monopoly, while women are left out in the cold. Men in relationships can do certain things, but when women do the same it is looked down upon. They wish how they could enjoy life like a "boy" does, I guess.

Sexually speaking, yes. But in real life, no.

1 out of 5 stars NO EVOLUTION ON THIS ONE........2007-07-15

IT'S NOWHERE NEAR "GOODIES" EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T BUY GOODIES (I HAD A FRIEND MAKE ME A COPY) I WENT OUT TO BUY THIS ONE, AND I WASTED MY MONEY. SHE NEEDS TO STICK TO HER STRONG POINT (DANCE SONGS) CAUSE DA ONLY MID-TEMPO SONG DAT ARE GOOD ARE "PROMISE" AND "C.R.U.S.H." NOW I SEE WHY SHE DON'T WANT ANYONE TO COMPARE HER TO JANET, CAUSE SHE'S NOT ABLE TO DO MID-TEMPO AND SLOW, BABY MAKING SONGS LIKE MS. JACKSON. I GIVE CIARA ONE MOREALBUM, AND THAT WILL BE ALL WE WILL HER FROM HER AND HER "MUSIC CAREER". P.S.- SHE CAN'T ACT EITHER.

3 out of 5 stars More like a DE-evolution.......2007-07-09

Ciara's debut album Goodies wasn't classic material, but it still produced some good moments like "1, 2 Step", "And I" and a few others. And I'm starting to appreciate it more after listening to her sophomore album, The Evolution.

We all know what "evolution" means, but it seems that in the case with R&B albums, that usually signifies a step BACKWARD. My brother said that no one under the age of 18 should own Goodies, but I actually think that's a more suitable description for THIS album. A lot of these songs seem tailor-made for middle school ("C.R.U.S.H.", anyone?).

There are some good songs on here, though, like "Like a Boy", "I Found Myself" and especially "My Love". And "Get Up" is good except for Chamillionaire's watered-down verse. But the rest of the album is mostly made up of mindless dance songs, like "Get In, Fit In", "Bang It Up", and the 50 Cent-assisted "Can't Leave `Em Alone" (and note to Fiddy: the word is "conversationalist", not "conversationist"). Another okay song featuring a "necessary" rapper is the overrated "That's Right" with Lil Jon, but it gets worse when Ciara tries to rap (why do young female R&B singers keep DOING that???). Still, that's not as bad as "Make It Last Forever", which not only generically samples Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock's "It Takes Two" (which is already a sample), but Ciara's rap during it is pretty much a complete jacking of Rob's first verse. And sorry, but "Promise" is annoying (especially when she repeats any words rhyming with "do").

As other people have mentioned, the four "evolutionary" interludes are also unnecessary. Buy this album only if you're a huge Ciara fan, because The Evolution really isn't much of one.

Anthony Rupert

3 out of 5 stars Ciara has not fully evolved..........2007-07-02

The title of this album implies that Ciara is growing and evolving as an artist. But after listening to both "Goodies" and "The Evolution", I don't see much of a change in one album to the next. Ciara is still relying on pop tunes and dance numbers to make records. Now this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if you're expecting a difference in this album in comparison to the last, you will be greatly disappointed. This record seems to be lacking any true substance. It seems like Ciara wants to be taken seriously as an r&b artist, but as long as she keeps making these popish songs about dancing and boys, she will never "evolve" into anything more than another pop artist with a semi-decent voice. People who are expecting a smoother more r&b sound won't like the album. But I'm sure dozens of pre-teens will love it.

1967 was the year things started to change in music as ive been told i was only 2 at the time. But the music speaks for it self the BEATLES had SGT.PEPPER.THE WHO had SELL OUT the HOLLIES had EVOLUTION not nearly as earth shattering as PEPPER but very experimental CARRIE ANNE was the hit
and yes its a little corny but the rest of the album was deffinately trying to be a step the HOLLIES needed to take to be taken seriously has a pop band.i think GRAM NASH had a lot to do with this.the album is on the psycodelic side but its great fun to listen to in 2007 a big departure from what music is today.but a definate pop rock cd from a band very underated and too associated with an AIR SUPPLY sound .This is a far cry from air that i breathe.

4 out of 5 stars A Hit and Miss Album!.......2007-02-12

"Evolution" was the first of two Hollies albums released in 1967. The band did a lot of experimenting in those years, both in songwriting and arrangements. Some of it worked, some of it didn't. "Butterfly" is often hailed as their finest and most consistent, whereas "Evolution" suffers from being anything but consistent. The songwriting is more or less on par with "Butterfly", but some arrangements in various degrees ruin the songs.

Worst is the "underwater" effect put on Graham Nash's voice on "Lullaby to Tim". It could have been a great track, but as it is, it's almost unlistenable. I have often wondered if a version with unruined vocals exists.

The distorted guitars put on the opening track "The the Heartaches Begin" and "Have You Ever Loved Somebody", give a forced feeling that does not help the songs, which are really good Hollies songs. The Searchers proved that "Have You Ever Loved Somebody" even had hit-potentials.

Enough negative words said, because there are plenty of succesful tracks that make the album quite enjoyable after all.

Like on the previous album all songs were written by Clarke, Hicks and Nash and Allan Clarke and Graham Nash more or less share the lead vocals with Tony Hicks joining in on choruses etc.

"Stop Right There" is a nice quiet Graham Nash ballad; fine violin solo. Nash also takes the lead vocals on one of the big highlights on the album "When Your Lights Turned On"; classic up-beat Hollies with great guitars and harmonies.

The nostalgic "Ye Olde Toffee Shop" featuring harpsichord is quite charming, but no more.

On "Games We Play" Clarke and Nash share the lead vocals. Incredible that this song was not released as a single. Extremely catchy with funny ( naive ) teenage lyrics.

Allan Clarke demonstrates his powerful vocals on several tracks such as "You Need Love" and "Leave Me".

"Water on the Brain" is another example; a song which also features a charming trombone solo.

So all in all you could call it a hit and miss album, mostly hits!

By the way, this review refers to the British version of the album.

5 out of 5 stars A multicolored flash of light over the rainbow.......2005-07-29

The Hollies comes in colours. Still a masterpiece of the psychedelic catalogue, this album is one of the most beautiful flowers of the english garden. A breeze of fresh air in the magic summer of love.

4 out of 5 stars Great bonus songs & remastering make it worth your while.......2002-06-03

"Evolution", like all the Hollies' lps, has it's share of filler and fluff. Nobody but the most diehard Hollies fan would really want to listen to "Ye Olde Toffee Shoppe" or "Lullaby To Tim", and "Rain On The Window" is just a less successful remake of their earlier "Bus Stop".

However, I'm pleased to report that the other seven songs from this US-version "Evolution" re-release are all very solid, enjoyable tunes, particulary "Then The Heartaches Begin", "Heading For a Fall", and of course, the hit, "Carrie-Anne".

Sundazed has also included five very good rare Hollies tracks ("rare" except for "Jennifer Eccles", of course.) "When Your Lights Turn On", in especially good.

Recommended to fans of sixties pop who are thirsting for something good beyond what they might already be familiar with.

3 out of 5 stars The Pre-Butterfly Album.......2001-07-19

The Hollies unique vocal stylings are never more predominate than on this reissue of their early 1967 album. Not as coherent as it should be, this album still has some merit for anyone seeking a british vocal "fix". "Carrie-Anne" and "Rain on The Window" are bolth great cuts. Not too sweet, but the sugar is definitley present. "Heading for a Fall" is a great example as to how to make a 2 minute song be so catchy. The bonus tracks are all pretty good, and Sundazed, as usual, did a primo job with the stereo remastering. Of note is the very drug influenced song "Open Up Your Eyes", which, although not predating any of the huge acts of the day, was significant to the groups attempt at doing musically different things. This album is aptly titled for their next few releases saw major changes in bolth the orchestration and singing arrangements. Is second only to the "King Midas In Reverse/Dear Eloise" album Sundazed also puts out. Go there and then come here.

Martina McBride's fourth RCA album may not be her best work, but it remains a state-of-the-art '90s pop-country album, filled with insouciantly catchy melodies, flawlessly smooth production, and some genuinely memorable material. The 1997 set is balanced between earnestly romantic tunes like "Here in My Heart," midtempo acoustic songs like "Be That Way," and quasi-feminist numbers like "A Broken Wing," which rivals "Independence Day" for her most focused, soulful performance to date. The album might have benefited from more judicious editing: the cutesy opening snippet, the superficial "Keeping My Distance," and the gooey "Valentine" feel out of place on this mostly well crafted, emotionally sung work. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Martina album!.......2007-04-26

I really love this cd, especially the song "A Broken Wing." There is also the opening gem I am Little But Loud.

5 out of 5 stars Dominant Effort.......2006-12-09

If vocal perfection, lush production, and uptempo breakdowns are guilty pleasures, then consider me convicted. This is good clean fun, and good to test the speakers with.

One way to get a "5 Star" rating from me is to make a recording that I think anyone should be able to appreciate. This is such an album. I really believe that if you cannot appreciate this album, you have problems.

5 out of 5 stars Her best...........2005-11-12

In response to the "It's Martina" review from Sam, the beginning and end of this CD was not done by her kids. It was Martina at a very young age.

I always thought that this album was her best. Each of her albums obviously has some great songs, but for me, Evolution was the album that made me the Martina fan that I am.

3 out of 5 stars It's Martina!.......2005-10-16

I only found a couple of songs that I really liked.

Did not like the beginning and end of the CD at all. Must be her kids.

Her last CD was much better.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly The Best.......2005-01-13

I'm a big martina fan. i dont have all her albums, but i do have a decent collection. i think she has an incredible voice, and seems to always find the greatest songs to match it.

This album, in my opinion, is likely her greatest original release. there is not one song that i don't like. and aside from her greatest hits (which i love cuz it has most of my faves), this would be my fave. a very powerful album vocally and lyrically.

i definetly strongly recommend adding this one to your collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful set of orchestral music for an amazing price.......2007-08-05

I will admit that when I first ordered this 20 cd set from Amazon I was very skeptical and hesitant. I figured what kind of quality am I going to get for $16.97?! But when I got it in the mail and started listening to some of the cd's I was more than pleasantly surprised. The music contents on each is cd has the complete versions of the each song or theme. You know how a lot of cd sets just have the short versions or arrangemnts of songs to cut down on the price, but not on this set. Every cd runs anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours of listening time. Even though the box set is called orchestral spectaculars if you like piano music there is a Liszt cd in the set with The Fantasy on Beethoven's The Ruins of Athens for piano, Malediction for piano and orchestra and Grande Fantasie Symphonique on Berlioz's Lelio for piano and orchestra. There is also a Rachmaninov in the set with his First Piano Concerto in F Sharp Minor and the original full length 30 minute version of his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Even if you listen to mostly piano music there are many versions based on them. For example, Brahms 21 Hungarian Dances that were written for solo piano, but in this set they are orchestrated. I had never heard the pieces like that before. It was nice to get a different perspective of the music. The same goes for Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition also written for piano, but here it is in a symphonic form and I enjoyed it just as much as the solo piano version. If you love opera, but are maybe someone that likes the orchestral part more than the singing there are many cd's in this set for that as well. There are 2 cd's of Wagner's music with my favorite prelude of all time Isolde's Love Death from Tristan and Isolde. Overtures from all of Rossini's and Rimsky Korsakov's operas. I think this cd would be a great place to start for someone who is new to classical music and doesn't want to spend a lot of money or if you love classical music as I do and want to hear new versions of your favorite pieces or just want to add to your cd collection you can do that for under $1.00 a cd. How many times have we all spent more than the price of this set for only one cd? I highly recommend this set. The sound quality and choices of music are excellent. Anyone who buys this will not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Live performances from Warsaw Chopin competition.......2007-05-17

This CD is a compilation of 13 in-concert performances by competitors at a Chopin competition in Warsaw (year not specified). As such it provides an interesting sampling of Chopin's solo piano works in a variety of performance styles. Pianists familiar with these works will especially enjoy the variety of selections and interpretations. As a non-pianist, I am somewhat disappointed in the variable acoustics between artists, from brilliant and clearly defined (resembling the acoustics of a recording studio) to distant and muted (resembling the acoustics of a large concert hall). This may be due to a variation in pianos, microphone placement, engineering, or possibly even concert location. The audience, fortunately, is well-behaved and there is little ambient noise. Two pianists (Jan Ekier and Martha Argerich) are listed on the jacket but do not play on the recording. In any case, this is a worthwhile recording for lovers of Chopin, especially at the exceptionally low price.

Album Description

"Underworld" and its accompanying soundtrack albums are perhaps the most thoughtful, valued and respected genre film soundtracks in the proud tradition of "The Matrix" and "The Crow."
As "Underworld: Evolution" continues the saga of the story, so does the new Soundtrack Album continue the tone set musically. On this new album is the exclusive debut solo recording from Chester Bennington, and a new exclusive recording by Puscifer. Chester Bennington is best known as the lead singer of iconic rock band Linkin Park. Likewise Pusicfer who contributed to the first "Underworld" album, is a new outlet for the highly respected, and commercially successful music genius Maynard James Keenan. Maynard is best known as the frontman of both Tool and A Perfect Circle. Also a contributing member of Puscifer is Danny Lohner, the famed former Nine Inch Nails guitarist who is also a sought out songwriter, producer and remixer.
Every song on the album is exclusive to this set at the time of release. In addition to those above are exclusive contributions from such varied and respected artists as My Chemical Romance, Slipknot, Meat Beat Manifesto, Cradle Of Filth as well as some the most exciting new emerging and critically acclaimed bands such as Atreyu, Hawthorn Heights, Senses Fail, Alkaline Trio, Aiden, Lacuna Coil, Trivium and more.
Many of these tracks proudly feature exclusive remixes by some of the most respected and sought after talents such as Danny Lohner, Chris Vrenna, cEvin Key and The Legion Of Doom. Both Danny Lohner and Chris Vrenna bring unique musical experience and sensibilities as former members of seminal rock band Nine Inch Nails. cEvin Key is the co-founder of Skinny Puppy and an established artist in his own right, remixing various artists of stature and releasing many solo albums under different titles. Jack Dangers new exclusive Meat Beat Manifesto song features the artists first use of vocal performance in over six years, which is a rare treat indeed for fans

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Underworld Evolution.......2007-06-23

This was something of a mediocre soundtrack, I thought. The only standout tracks for me were "The Undertaker" by Puscifer and Her Portrait In Black" by Atreyu, other than that, there is nothing special here. Overall, there is nothing memorable besides the two songs mentioned above, none of the other songs or remixes did anything for me, unless you really have to have any of the songs on here, I would recommend saving your money.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!Almost Perfect..........2006-11-03

This cd was great!I really enjoyed it.Most of the songs were perfect...and if not perfect they were very close. My favorite would have to be Undertaker(Renholder Remix) by Pusifer.
PS-Does anyone know which song played in the movie trailers?I really liked that one too.

4 out of 5 stars This album was probably better than the movie...ha.......2006-09-03

When I first bought and listened to this album, I thought "hmmm, lots of 'emo-labeled' bands." That didn't stop me from enjoying this soundtrack though. I liked the first two songs on this soundtrack quite a bit at first, but they got pretty old.

However, I loved Hawthorne Heights's remixed "Where Can I Stab Myself In the Ears" (my friend loved it, too), Aiden's "Last Sunrise" (which had a lot of references to Anne Rice's Interview With The Vampire), Lacuna Coil's "Our Truth" (have since became a fan of theirs), Atreyu's "Her Portrait is Black," and Cradle of Filth's "HW2"/"Halloween."

Oh, I also liked Trivium's "Washing Away Me In The Tides," Senses Fail's "Bite To Break Skin," and Slipknot's "Vermillion pt 2."

So, pretty much the producers took good songs and made them even better. I think I just named 8 of the 16 songs as being favorites, not to mention the other songs weren't bad. What does that say to you?

So, I guess that 4 is actually more like a 4.5.

3 out of 5 stars OK,nothing more.......2006-08-09

This is an acceptable rock soundtrack. The songs are unmemorable,
but they suit the film.OK if you like this sort of thing.

3 out of 5 stars @ Shawn.......2006-04-04

The track which was used in the romantik scenes, like the sexscene, is "Eternity And A Day" by Paul Haslinger.
