The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Robert Dowland,the son of John Dowland, is really only remembered today for the two collections he published in 1610:'Varieties of Lute Lessons' and 'A Musicall Banquet'-the subject of this recording. In both cases,however, there are grounds for suspecting that the prime mover behind the collections was John Dowland rather than Robert, and that he put Robert's name on the title-pages as a wayof launching his son's musical career. 'A Musicall Banquet'was the first lute song collection to include material drawn from continental collections, and marked the beginning of a more eclectic phase in the history of the English song.This album was somewhat of a disappointment to me. Oh, the voice is excellent as usual, but the repertoire chosen for this recording lacked variety as well as performing aptitude on the part of Scholl. Over half of the songs were English lute songs that Scholl sang as if they were arias from an opera by Handel. He just doesn't come across with this kind of song. And his English diction is very difficult to understand even with songs that are known. On the other hand there were a few renditions of Spanish and Italian as well as French songs that were very well done. The accompaniments were excellent in every case, so the disc is worth purchasing if you are a fan of Andreas.

SUPERB.......2001-04-30

Andreas Scholl, arguably, the finest countertenor singing today, has released this new, superb album. It consists of a collection of songs accompanied by lute put together by Robert Dowland, a minor composer (1591-1641) under the title A MUSCALL BANQUET (no, I didn't misspell it). It is a fine cross-section of songs in English, Spanish, Italian and French.

Scholl has many "hit" CD's to his credit, including a beautiful collection of Vivaldi songs, an album called "Heroes" in which he sings some gorgeous Handel & Gluck opera arias and he is the male soloist on a new recording of Pergolisi's "Stabat Mater." His voice is absolutely pure and beautiful.

Three fine musicians accompany him on lute, guitar, harpsichord. etc. Recommended.

Absolute Scholl.......2001-02-27

These lovely songs are full of period metaphor, subtle music and complexity despite the deceptive simplicity of the presentation. They challenge the listener unused to the poetry of the period but more than repay a little concentration. If you like melancholy, you'll love it. Scholl himself described this genre of English song as `incredibly melancholy' - but not everything on this CD is, and not all the songs are English: there is lyrical Italian and French material, as well as fiery Spanish music.

These are not easy songs for a singer to do well but Andreas Scholl is ready for them, now: his voice bigger, deeper and more resonant than formerly. His thoughtful approach to text shines, as usual. His ornamentation in all the songs is just ... so. Not too much, and nothing is wanting.

He imbues In Darkness Let Me Dwell with an incredibly dark sound and a powerful intensity that I don't think he could have executed as well in earlier years. The final bars of To Plead My Faith are wrenchingly sad. The Spanish songs are spectacular in his live performance, especially Vuestros Ojos, which, live, he takes at one hell of a lick, to the immense pleasure of the audience; a fraction slower on the recording, but still very exciting. The coloratura tour de force of Sta Notte Mi Sognava is accomplished with almost throw-way ease. The genteel innuendo of Lady If You So Spite Me is done with sardonic humour and energy alternating with pathos - quite a combination. In Go My Flock, Go Get You Hence, he sounds about seventeen and full of teenage desperation: at `No, she hates me!' you can imagine the infatuated teenager flinging his arms about. The final track, O Bella Piu, is a little miracle of interpretation. Apart from the sheer perfection of voice and delivery, he does `pining' so well! He begins with quiet adoration; `non piu dolore!' is a gnat's whisker from a sob but without any loss of control or musicality - no extraneous funny business - moving into pleading in the first `Pieta!', and sheer desperation in the second. A heart-stopper.

The accompanying instrumentalists are all first rate. Christophe Coin's bass viol solo in O, Dear Life When Shall It Be is fascinating. Edin Karamazov - a star in his own right if ever there was - is a perfect match for Scholl and he also gets a short, beautiful lute solo. All the performers are on top form, as are the recording engineers. The whole CD is distilled pleasure from start to finish: each song is fully revealed and brought to vibrant life. Andreas Scholl's singing on this recording is peerless - but `Lieber erstmal Lieder', as he would say (he puts the music he sings before what he calls, self-deprecatingly, the present cult of his stardom) and on this CD he certainly lives up to his motto.

Pretty Good Album.......2005-11-28

Regardless of whether or not you like the Killers, this CD is pretty good. I love classical music, and this CD is not a disappointment.

The songs are a little shorter than the originals, but still manage to be pretty good. It's amazing what they've done with just a few classic instruments and no synthesizer. The mood of the songs are a little different from the album, it's not so much "night" music, as it is... classic. You can picture yourself eating in a brightly lit, fancy French cafe with this music in the background, rather than being at a club or on the streets at night.

The only problem is that the music lacks a certain amount of energy, which was present on the original album.

I would still reccomend this CD to anyone who likes classical music and the Killers.

If you like The Killers this Cd rocks! I love the Hot Fuss Cd and this one is just as good. I highly recommend this Cd for all Killer fans!

The Killers have a tribute album...already?.......2005-04-26

Okay, "Hot Fuss" came out about 10 months ago and now The Killers are one of the most popular bands of the 'indie' genre. Is it too soon for The String Quartet to turn songs like "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me" into Muzak pieces? The answer is yes but...they did a pretty good job of it. I am not recommending this cd unless you love The Killers AND you don't mind listening to the songs turned around 180 degrees into 'chamber music'. Try to preview it first.

Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

Mendez Club Mix a step in the right direction.......2006-05-15

Freestyle has gone stale because of veteran producers continuing to murder the genre with overused recycled beats and productions. How many times can you go to a show to see the same people perform the same songs or new songs with a dance or trance vibe.

Every track with the exception of the Mendez club mix (Dave The One Mendez and Agent Keith Kemper) sounds like the typical run of the mill produced in someones bedroom in an hour mix.

The Mendez Club Mix was bold and was a good mixture of classic production with a new sound which took this song in a new direction. Had this song been released with the original mix and acapella it wouldn't have even warranted a review.

We need more new productions and new producers taking things in a new direction in order for progress. Instead the fans insist on regressing along with artists and producers who don't know how to retire and contribute to the fall of this once dominant genre of music. We need new artists with new producers. The old are just not capable of bringing it back, it's been 16 years and counting, if that's not proof I don't know what is. I cringe at the fact that we may be hearing more of the tired veteran comeback producers trying to put out new material with the same old sounds and productions with the same old artists or new artists that just can't carry a track because the veteran producers do not have the benefit of knowledgable engineers or keyboardists to do the track for them and make their hits like they did back in the day. If you are wondering why they are not capable of producing another hit; this is why. They weren't responsible the first time around, the keyboardists and engineers were.

If this song had two young artists with the same daring producers on the Mendez Club Mix it would have charted in no time. It was absolutley a step in the right direction at the wrong time in the wrong climate with the wrong people.

Hopefully things will change.

new freestyle.......2006-04-26

freestyle is an amazing & resilient genre - 20 years on, the classics still sound great, the radios still play them and the classic artists still put out new material (every now & then, when the labels support it). this duet from Cynthia & Lissette M is OK but isn't daring enough or contagious enough to be very memorable. average lyrics & vocals, average production, mixes are too short and don't stand out (version 3 is the best in my opinion). (Safire/Cynthia duet Can You Stand the Rain also didn't create the buzz). need to inject a bit of the passion and excitement of Dreamboy/Dreamgirl into these tracks - soaring vocal passion. There is definitely still a public out there for clever freestyle tracks with top vocals, good lyrics and excellent production/beats/edits. I hope Warlock (now home for many top freestyle labels of past - Fever, Sleeping Bag, etc) and the other active freestyle labels continue to promote freestyle and release more top quality underground & crossover freestyle like they used to (a la cover girls, corina, monet, trinere, safire, etc)

Not too often a great record comes along that just blows you away on every level imaginable. "I Can't Change Your Mind" is such a record. From the production to the mixes, this CD5 has it all. Even before playing this single, I knew it would razzle and dazzle my senses. Afterall, it's Lissette Melendez and Cynthia!!!! These two Divas of Dance are like the mythological Sirens that would lure unsuspecting sailors in their direction with their lovely and mesmerizing songs. However, unlike those Lorelei, we don't need to fear for our lives. Here we are drawn to the scintillating harmonics of these melded vocals, over a "sonic sea" of expertly produced rhythms and beats. Making these "waves" possible is none-other than the exaulted producer Carlos Berrios. He is definitely one of my favorite producers...EVER!!!!! Seeing his name associated with this project, I knew it was going to "shiver Me timbers!!!" Keeping with the aquatic metaphor, Mr. Berrios is like "Neptune" and produces these "musical mermaids" with such style and substance I feel as if I'm going to "drown in ecstacy".

The single also boasts one of the most exquisite mixes ever commited to a digital disc: The Mendez Mix. Dave "The One" Mendez along with "Agent" Keith Kemper for Team Matrix Productions, has made a mix that defies catergoration. If I had to describe it, it's like a break-beat electro hip hop record with heavenly trance-like keyboards. These two "Poseidons of Percussion" ignite an already brilliant track and make it all the more craveable for consumer and dancefloor consumption by instilling such a high energy level into the groove's structure, I feel we have found our answer to the fuel shortage!!! This baby's got so much drive I'm surprised my CD player can handle it. What is so admirable about this mix is that Dave and Keith has made a remix that isn't too short or too long. Where there are so many mixes that push a listeners'/dancers' tolerance and patience for length with a lot of masterbatory-musical self-indulgence, Team Matrix goes for the "Jugular of the Jam" and we are palpitating with orgasmic satisfaction!!!! Thanks Guys!!!!

And if you couldn't think this single couldn't get any better, there is an a capella mix included for maximum enjoyment. You can really appreciate LisCyn's vocal collaboration ten-fold, but for any creative DJ out there who would like to take his or her chance on making a mix of their own, well, here you have it. When was the last time a single gave so many options for a consumer? This record has it all. I'd nominate this one for a Grammy for best dance music production and Team Matrix as Remixers of the Year.

A breath of Fresh Air!.......2005-09-21

I just wanted to say that this is definatly BY FAR.. the best come back ANY artist(s)from the Freestyle era has made. I think that everyone involved on this project needs a HUGE pat on the back. One thing that I think everyone forgets though, this is NOT a freestyle track, sorry to disapoint Kenny, this is a new track, (yes I will dare to say Urban Dance, and proud of it, hehe) sang by talented freestyle artists. And I for one am excited to hear the new sound! I agree with the person who posted saying the Mendez mix was the hottest, and not because it's my fav, but because of the reactions I saw when it was sang live!!! The crowd ate it up, as they should!

Although Dave made an effort of recreating the name "freestyle" by renaming a genre that has been in hibernation.......never try to label a song with a name that hasnt even made any impact to anyone. next time, call it like it is: FREESTYLE.
