Producer Katsunori Tanaka somehow got the two albums in this series made with an unlikely combination of very little money and a ferocious passion for his subject. He was obviously unimpressed by post-tropicalismo pop, neo-bossa soft jazz, and precious lounge attitudinizing. Instead, he headed into the favelas (slums) of Rio, where the massive Escolas de Samba (samba schools) at the heart of the annual Carnival celebration reside all year round and the real thing is still played. These master sambistas are resolutely untrendy and faithful to their craft. The sound is as merry and subversively sexy as ever, made up of various configurations of solo vocalists and enthusiastic choirs, supported by lilting, round-toned guitars, grouchy tubas, spiraling Dixieland-like woodwinds, and platoons of drums and percussion. The liner notes are the outpourings of a true connoisseur who is eager to communicate his deep knowledge and boundless enthusiasm. --Christina Roden
