The version of the toon was not what I expected. I wanted more the "popular" version.

I am a pinaist, and several of thses pieces find themselve in my repertoire, and by hearing them on this cd, one is able to truly appreciate the composition and performance of these songs, which are not very popular nowadays. A great collection that I highly recommend to all musicians and music lovers.

If you like light works for piano and orchestra, this is the BEST I have heard. With the popularity of movie themes in this genre, this CD will not disappoint you. There are some great undiscovered gems on this CD. Every pianist should have this to 'expand their horizons'. Simply the best!

A cross between jazz and Umm Kalthoum...........2006-12-25

I'm just getting to know classic Arabic music, and up until now I've bought Egyptian stuff: Abdul Halim Hafez, Umm Kalthoum, Mohammad Abdel Wahab, Kazem al-Saher. Fairuz is considerably more Western sounding. Easy listening is generally an insult in my book, but this does sound somewhat like middle of the 20th century American pop-jazz crossed with a classical Arabic style. She is (I think) the most famous Lebanese singer, and Lebanon is a major pop culture producer in the Arab world (I wonder how the Israeli bombs have affected that?). It's surprisingly good within this style, although I think that most of the other stuff I've heard up to this point impress me even more, even if its rawer sounding. I think the Arabs like that raw emotion, even if it's a bit off-putting to Westerners. For example: Inta 'Omry (You are my life) by Umm Kalthoum. This music is less off putting.

Unfortunately, I only have this. I don't know if Fairuz sounds different elsewhere. I don't find the orchestration particularly schmaltzy, perhaps just a bit stylized....

Album Description

This CD presents a tribute to Thea Musgrave on the occasion of her 75th birthday. While a scholarship student of Nadia Boulanger, Scottish-born Musgrave was the winner of the Lili Boulanger Memorial Prize, and has since gone on to win numerous awards and honors. Her works have been widely performed in Britain, Europe and the USA. Musgrave is active as a conductor of her own music, and has worked with most of the major British and American orchestras. The New York Virtuoso Singers, arguably America's finest `new music' chorus, are heard in this loving tribute to Musgrave. The CD opens with a major Musgrave work-the 26 minute long "For the Time Being: Advent", based on W.H. Auden's poem "For the Time Being" (pub. 1945), a work of self-questioning in time of war and at a time of loss. This work is a tour de force, not only for its huge variety of vocal textures, but also for the manner in which Musgrave sustains, over its entire length, the sombre intensity of Auden's vision. British film star Michael York is the narrator on this recording. "Black Tambourine", on six poems of Hart Crane, is performed as a continuous 18 minute span. The cycle captures the wide range of moods of the poetry, from the madrigal-like trio of `Pastoral' to the tinkling salon piano of "My Grandmother's Love Letters". The CD also includes three delightful cycles taken from the anthology "Poems on the Underground"-a series of madrigal-like works setting poems that were exhibited in the trains of the London Underground.

Go Claude! .......2006-01-28

I have not heard the album, but I've heard Claude play some of the pieces from it, in live concert, and I know him from way back, when we competed at Gap, France. Claude won the competition. Well, there were two co-winners, but anyone who heard, knew Claude was the real winner. And he still is. Simply a fantastic saxophonist from whom anyone can learn. I do not have to hear the album to know that he and his beautiful wife, Odile, will have given every nuance their greatest attention, making each recording as good as it can possibly be. I highly recommend the performers. If the mastering engineers were in their league, this should be a great album. [Amazon requires that I rate it; how could I give it less than 5 stars? The live performances were worth 10.]

This is just one of several CDs by Claude Delangle that prove he is unmatched as a classical saxophonist--period. Dating back to his monumental recording, The Solitary Saxophone, also on BIS, he has clearly established himself as the musical ambassador for the saxophone and has garnered the respect of musicians worldwide. Noone can match his refinement and control, nor his uncanny sense of intonation and technique. He is the master of the instrument and few recordings can hold up to his artistry. This recording including rarely recorded pieces of the Schmitt and Caplet, is highlighted by simply stellar playing on the Ravel transcription. He should be an inspiration to all saxophonists regardless of any 'school of thought.'

Master pieces by Delangel.......2000-08-14

In this album , Delangel has chosen to play works that were commisioned to Elisa Hall by the French composers. For me ,this is a superb recording that contains most of the standard reportoire played by a superb Saxophonist. Debussy Rhapsody arr. by Vincent David and Ravel/Piano sonata played on Soprano Saxophone are very interesting . Over all , a superb CD , nice choice of the repertoire and superbly play!!!

Eclectic McCormack.......1998-09-10

This is a most interesting collection of McCormack in song. Many of these songs sung by McCormack on this disk I have heard him sing for the first time. McCormack sounds a bit awkward with his singing of The Battle Hymn of the Republic, and God Bless America. I rate this recording 3 stars not because if McCormack's defencies, but because of some of the poor quality 78rpm transfers. All the pops and hisses remain. A good digital transfer eliminates this annoyance so one can further enjoy McCormack's wonderful artistry. To hear McCormack's voice truly rise from the grave, I strongly recommend: McCormack in Song, Released by Nimbus
