Bad Religion has for years been considered by new crops of listeners to be a vital band because they're such OG hardcore kingpins. And while the band's justly revered--they've managed to stay together for almost 25 years, all while getting better and growing their audience--"political punk realness" is not where their strengths lie. As to their political numbers, they were never quite able to pen the sort of personal yet timeless anthems that the Minutemen or the Ex did, while in terms of 1-2-3-4 punch, you'd get far more visceral thrills from the first Damned single. Of course, Southern California punk bands injected bushels of melody and hooks into their songs, and B.R. added elements of metal and even psychedelia to their own taut tunes. Their fourteenth album to date, New Maps is a terrific sounding record; at least two-thirds of it begs many repeated listens. The album's second single, "Heroes and Martyrs," is exactly what the band does best. A tightly-coiled and super revved-up anthem, it pits the energy and fast Barre chord sound of the greatest hardcore with a delicious, poppy production and doubled-up backing vocals that brings to mind Queen (or at least Queens of the Stone Age), in the very best way. --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description
In a world ruled increasingly by superstition and intolerance, Bad Religion's rousing wall-of-sound punk seems about as necessary now as ever before. It is the impassioned sound of reason, anthems of a bittersweet idealism and a guarded hope set to propulsive guitars and charging drumbeats. And while most groups with even half the artistic output have long ago morphed into stylistic self-parody, Bad Religion is currently surging forward with a renewed creative intensity. Their fourteenth album is both a nod to the band's defiant past and an undeniable step forward in the evolution of a genre they helped to define. Look for them on this summer's Warped Tour, inspiring a new generation of fans.Customer Reviews:
still alive.......2007-08-07
Overall, great CD, I did like Empire a tad more but I might change my mind in a few weeks.
The mix, yes, very unusual, yes, we would like to have the vocals float above the music just like we are used to from the "old" albums. but luckily there is a solution. . . Play it LOUD!!!! Honestly, it helps.
Punk Rock ... play it loud remember?

Welcome to the new dark ages.......2007-07-29
1. 52 Seconds: 5/10; It's actually 56 seconds, and it rocks, but it's hard to hear the words, and they aren't that good anyway. It's really one of those pointless openers.
2. Heroes & Martyrs: 6/10; It's really hard to hear the vocals on this song. The production for the whole album is kind of ugly, but this song is probably the worst offender.
3. Germs of Perfection: 7/10; It's an okay song, but like the whole album, the lyrics just aren't up to the usual Bad Religion standards.
4. New Dark Ages: 9/10; This is possibly the best song on the album, and the closest thing to a title track. Still, they clearly reused riffs from "Atheist Peace" and "All There Is" from their last album.
5. Requiem for Dissent: 8/10; The gang vocals are a nice touch.
6. Before You Die: 8/10; This song is starting to grow on me, but again, the lyrics are kind of lame.
7. Honest Goodbye: 8/10; A little experimentation here, but it's a welcome change of pace and content.
8. Dearly Beloved: 6/10; Poor production on this song.
9. Grains of Wrath: 7/10; It almost has a good message, something like Soul Asylum's "Black Gold," but this song is a little too short and ambiguous.
10. Murder: 4/10; This song should be called "Bad Ape," but it's just filler anyway.
11. Scrutiny: 9/10; It's a dead ringer for "Atheist Peace," but it's still a good song.
12. Prodigal Son: 5/10; For one of the longer songs on the album, this is really disappointing. I thought it was going to be about Bush.
13. The Grand Delusion: 4/10; So it's come to this: They're parodying titles of Styx songs. This is one of the worst songs on the album.
14. The Lost Pilgrim: 6/10; This song had the potential to be a lot better.
15. Submission Complete: 6/10; This must be one of the lectures Graffin gives his students. The concept is good, but the lyrics just don't work.
16. Fields of Mars: 9/10; As usual, Bad Religion at least manages to close the album well. The piano is a nice touch. Still, this song is missing something, and it sounds a lot like "Live Again (the Fall of Man)."
17. Sorrow (Acoustic Version): 8/10; It's a good song, but it was already kind of poppy before being acousticized. On the plus side, those annoying gunshots are gone.
18. God Song (Acoustic Version): 10+/10; The reason you should buy the Japanese version. As good as the version on "Against the Grain" is, this version is better.
In general, there aren't any really awful tracks on here. The album just has three huge problems.
1. The music drowns out the vocals on many songs. Look, I'm no producer, but I think you would turn up Greg's vocals so he's at least somewhat coherent on the verses for "Heroes & Martyrs" and "Dearly Beloved."
2. A lot of recycled riffs from the last album, which is nothing new for Bad Religion, but still, they really overdo it here.
3. The lyrics! Some songs make me question if this is really Greg Graffin. There's really not one single poetically coherent (no, that's not an oxymoron) song on here.
I think this album will go down as one of Bad Religion's worst. It's almost like a reversion, like what Metallica tried to do with "St. Anger." Songs like "Eat Your Dog," "Oligarchy," and "World War III" wouldn't be entirely out of place on "New Maps of Hell."
Also, on a personal note, to everybody who bashes "The New America," it's actually one of Bad Religion's best albums. The music is good, the range of content is superior to any other Bad Religion album, and the lyrics are brilliant. The only reason you don't like them is because they're optimistic (hey, 2000 was a pretty good year until the end). "New Maps of Hell" is kind of an anti-"The New America."

this album. The remastered sound is superb of course, but
the deciding factor on this one should be the inclusion
of their last hit, after more than 20 years had passed since
their previous one.
After the team reunited, one of their biggest fans wrote
a song especially for them. Paul McCartney wrote "Wings of
a Nightingale" for them, and it is a truly beautiful song
that displays their harmony at its best, and the song is
not usually found on other collections.
Get the best of all their classic early hits, plus this
last hit.

Bad Religion, one of the last bands you'd expect to join the ranks of major-label rockers, makes the leap from its own Epitaph Records to Atlantic for its eighth album, Stranger Than Fiction. The quintet doesn't compromise its integrity or its aesthetics, delivering its familiar Ramones-style pop songs at crash-and-burn tempos and continuing to rail against business as usual in corporate America. (The band's social critiques have always been a cut above the average hardcore punk's, as befits a group led by a vocalist pursuing his PhD at Cornell.) Especially effective is the opening track, "Incomplete," which features guest guitar by Wayne Kramer of the MC5. --Jim DeRogatisCustomer Reviews:

PUNK ROCK IS NOT DEAD... AND THIS PROVES IT!.......2006-05-06
Stranger Than Fiction was Bad Religion's first album on a major label, and was underappriecated by most old Bad Religion fans. But, no matter what they say, Stranger than Fiction is an awesome album.
THE BEST SONGS
Incomplete- classic Bad Religion. 'Mother, Father, look at your little monster. I'm a hero, I'm a zero.'
Stranger than Fiction- the song the album came from. Great, catchy, Bad Religion.
The Handshake- an intresting quick song. 'a handshake's nothing but a subtle f**k you.'
Slumber- you know you have an awesome band when they can take a slow song and make it one of the best in a great album. SLumber is a great song. Your Bad Religion collection isn't complete until you have this.
These are the best songs, but the album in genereal is wonderful. Any BAd Religion, heck, any punk rock fan needs this album.

i just have to say, i love this album to death. infected is definately a song that is a total landmark. i also think the title song is amazing as well. some songs like tiny voices and slumber are hidden gems.
the only gripe is that they had to remake 21st century digital boy. that was totally unnecessary, but it doesnt really matter too much.
i would say that this album is an essential cd for BR fans, but not their best by far. i may put it on par with generator. this album is the biggest fish on the small pond of BR albums on atlantic records.(recipe for hate, gray race, no substance, and new america)

Would you give it all up to live again?.......2007-03-17
The Empire Strikes First plays like an album by a band that is starting to settle into a new era. The songs are catchy yet abbrasive, the playing is tight and professional, and the vocals are as good as any other punk album you care to mention.
Some people may be a bit put off by things like rapper Sage Francis being highlighted in one song, or the Heartbreaker's Mike Campbell taking a solo in "Los Angeles is Burning," but with preconceptions aside, Empire achieves everything it intends to. Imagine how many people were playing "Let Them Eat War" when they pulled up to the polls to vote in 2004. A sense of hope, a message of unity, and an attitude of discontent go a long way to raising spirits.
It's time to turn the tides indeed.

The Process of Belief finds Bad Religion returning to their roots in two important aspects. First, original guitarist Brett Gurewitz has rejoined the ranks, bringing with him the taut songwriting skills that made Bad Religion hardcore pioneers in the mid-1980s. Secondly, the band has returned to Gurewitz's successful indie imprint Epitaph after years on a major. The result is an album that captures the clean joy and vigor of melodic hardcore without sacrificing its moral core. Songs like "Supersonic" and "Prove It" are fast, catchy, and irresistible examples of the kind of prime ADD punk that's over before you know it. But the likes of "Materialist" and "Kyoto Now" find Bad Religion at their best. Greg Graffin sings at one point that "you might not think that there's any wisdom in a f***ed up punk rock song," but his rants against global pollution, ambition, and family politics prove otherwise. There are a few surprises as well--"Broken" is almost an acoustic chart anthem while "Bored and Extremely Dangerous" could be a Sebadoh song. In all, The Process of Belief is confirmation that you don't need big shorts and a low IQ to make a prime-grade punk rock album. --Ian WatsonAlbum Description
The newest Bad Religion album, 'The Process Of Belief' is no mere hardcore revivalism; it is, in fact, the complete evolution of punk music, a record that successfully redefines a genre the band helped to popularize. If you love punk rock, this disc will surely quench your thirst like no other, and if you're simply looking for an incredibly vital and inspiring rock record, the same holds true. CD packaged in an O-card. Epitaph Records.Customer Reviews:
It's easy to imagine.......2007-03-04
From the first seconds of "Supersonic" the listener becomes acutely aware that Bad Religion is not only back, they are better than ever. It is not until "Broken" that they even give you a second to breathe. "Broken" then gives you a radio-friendly pop sheen that is unexpected and welcome. Immediately after, however, the speed is back.
From "Sorrow" to "Sound Defense" and from "Evangeline" to "Lie," Process is proof that Bad Religion still is the best rock and roll act of the last twenty years (and counting.)

Great Music For Those Who Usually Hate Hardcore.......2006-07-22
Imagine my surprise when I finally found a group that played fast and had a singer who had a voice that a man over 30 could tolerate. As if that wasn't enough, this group also had songs that were highly melodic and not lyrically inane. The first album I ever heard from Bad Religion was No Control. The songs weren't as melodic as I would have liked, but I found the music and the singer's voice and style of singing absolutely invigorating. Sadly, the album was a cassette and it eventually fell apart. Since I wasn't absolutely in love with the album, I never actively sought to buy it again.
Years later I bought a bunch of cassettes from an Ebay auction. Bad Religion's Recipe for Hate was included in the lot. I decided to listen to it once. I figured at least the singer wouldn't give this rapidly aging dude a headache. Needless to say, I was blown away by the album. It was much more melodic than No Control. I truly love RECIPE. I then read some reviews of other albums and decided to buy Against the Grain. Sadly, I didn't find that album appealing. The music just sounded too thrashy, too short and seemed repetitive and didn't reach the melodic heights of RECIPE.
I had no idea which album to buy next or even if I should buy another album. I'm glad to say that PROCESS was my next choice. The few bad reviews came from people saying it was too poppy and wasn't hard enough. This was my clue that I would probably enjoy it more than Against the Grain. My decision turned out to be a good one. This album is much more melodic than Against the Grain. I simply love it. The songs are more diverse and more melodic. I'm planning to buy the EMPIRE album next. The old hardcore fans don't seem to enjoy it as much as their older albums. That's a sign to me that EMPIRE is probably going to be great.
When you are 35 years old, you are no longer interested whether a group has "sold out." You no longer get into major arguments with your friends if the new album by your favorite group sounds "wimpy." Trust me, I went through that phase when I was young. Metallica has had to deal with such stuff from their old heavy metal fans. It's rather pathetic to watch. I'm now only interested in what sounds good. Bad Religion no longer make albums like they did fifteen years ago. They have not sold out. Their melodies have grown and the songs are more diverse. They have simply grown and gotten better. For those who want them to sound like they did fifteen years ago, it's not going to happen. They can't return to what they once were. They must be who they currently are and not what you want them to be. Graffin is simply too smart to have remained stagnant.
By the way, if anyone knows another hardcore band they might think I like, mention it in future reviews. Right now Bad Religion is the only hardcore punk band I can truly say I like. I heard the Misfits and love the singer's Elvis voice and many of the songs have great hooks, but the production on those albums is so bad, I can't listen to them.
Excellent.......2006-07-05
Anyway a 5/5 album. Buy it!

The last outstanding Bad Religion album! After this...mediocrity.......2007-07-24
Bad Religion is one of the few bands (in any genre) that continued to come up with outstanding or at least very strong albums since their 1988 'Suffer' release. 'The Gray Race' marks the end of their legacy IMO but it is such an end!
Many fans were afraid that after Mr.Brett's (songwriter/guitarist) departure the band will go commercial and loose their edge, but this fortunately didn't happen here. This album contains all of BR's trademark hooks (melodic vocals, memorable and catchy choruses, great guitar riffs and strong drumming). The band has come up with some of their best song material ever in tunes such as "Parallel", "Cease", "Ten in 2010", "Come Join Us" and "Them and Us"!
In terms of atmosphere 'The Gray Race' brings across something in between 'Stranger Than Fiction' and 'Generator', what more do you need? Vocally and lyrically Graffin is still going strong and inspired (not like nowadays) as in all previous efforts, the guitar riffs-solos are memorable and undeniably Bad Religion, the bass melodic as usual, while Bobby is excellent behind the drum set.
Buy this without hesitation...actually buy every BR album from Suffer up to this, you won't be disappointed.

To all the naysayers out there I say that this is a great Bad Religion album, not one song deserves less than 5 stars, well spirit shine just gets 5 stars but its a short song so its not too bad. On with the review since im listening to the album right now:
1. The Gray Race: 5/5 Great lyrics:' The Gray race shrivels and the world it creates is black and white.' Very fast song and slows down towards the end but then picks up to the same pace it was before. Awesome drums and guitars as well. Great way to start the album.
2. Them and Us. 5/5 Even after playing Crazy Taxi on the dreamcast this is still an awesome song. Just listen to those lyrics!Amazing!
3.A Walk 5/5 Dont know why some people dont like this song. The song is all about being yourself and not listening to others. Very punk rock song.
4. Parallel 5/5 Incredible song. Im gonna have "Our lives are parallel" stuck in my head for days.
5. Punk Rock Song 5/5 So awesome, great drums, guitars and lyrics. Says alot about the masses not caring for our world and ignoring the poverty thats around us.
6. Empty Causes. 5/5 Laughed the first time I heard this song and still brings a smile to my face when I listen to it.
7. Nobody Listens. 5/5 Well this is one of my favourite songs on the album even though its under 2 minutes long. Very FAst lyrics, drums and guitars. One of their best songs I believe.
8. Pity the dead. 5/5 "Why do we pity the dead are you churned by emotion from the voices in your head (are you scared of the logic that swirls in your head) look at all the living and you'll ask yourself why do we pity the dead" Those lyrics basically say it all, amazing song.
9. Spirit Shine. 5/5 The only low point of the album because of the annoying chorus but the song is over quick so its all good.
10.Streets of America. 5/5 Slows the albums pace right down but still a great song.
11.Ten in 2010. The most hardcore song on the album. I think the lyrics mean that there will only be 10 people left in the year 2010.
12.Victory.5/5 Not much to say on this one but great vocals combined with the message that we kill just to claim victory for a lost cause shines through and propels this songs meaning to a higher level than the song preceding it.
13. Drunk Sincerity. 5/5 Another song where the chorus will be stuck in your head for ages." Its all just drunk sincerity."
14. Come join us. 5/5 Wow this is another of my favourite songs on the album, the way its all put together is just amazing. BR have really outdone themselves here.
15. Cease. 5/5 Best possible way to finish an incredible album.
To be honest I prefer Generator over this release but im still amazed that even with the label change and losing Brett for this disc that this album is as good as it gets. However like all good reviews " Everything must cease!"
The Gray Race? Hell yeah.......2006-05-21
this has one of the best songs ever. cease! Now here's my review
The Gray Race(9/10)- Nice guitar riff with a very cool chorus, different melody from most br songs
Them And Us(10/10)- Possibly the best song on the album along with cease and punk rock song. The harmonies in the chorus are gold
A Walk(0/10)Why????????Why???????This song is horrible how is it possible for greg to have written such bad lyrics. Just skip past this one
Parallel(10/10)- One of the best of the album it's a very beatifull song with a great chorus
Punk Rock Song(10/10)- One of the all time best songs of br. this is a classic for br and punk. ``This is just a punk rock song, written for the people who can see something's wrong.
Empty Causes(8/10)- One of br poppiest songs ever. but not bad at all has a nice tune
Nobody Listens(9/10)- This one really grew on me. the tune is very different from br songs like the gray race.
Pity The Dead(8/10)- I kinda got sick of this one. but it's not bad at all
Spirit Shine(9/10)- One of the most mellow songs on the album but one of my favorites. great chorus
Streets Of America(9/10)- The slowest song on the album, great guitar riff with godd harmonies at the end
10 in 2010-(9/10)- The most energetic song on the album. but i'm kinda dissapointed that this get's concert time and songs like parallel and them and us don't.
Victory(8/10)- Poppy, punky, everything enjoyable...nice harmonies at the last chorus
Drunk Sincerity(9/10)- Very nice but yet get's kinda annoying after you hear it a lot
Come Join Us(10/10)- This one grew on me a lot too. The singing will shock you because it's kinda like a rap and i'm sure 50 cent could'nt do it
Cease(10/10)- The best of the album no doubt great guitar riff and solo with lyrics that will kick your behind and make sure you hear or see the piano version of it
Overall, a great punk album
It may not be BR's best..........2006-04-04
So if you are new to Bad Religion, I recommend you start with "Against the Grain", "Generator", "Stranger Than Fiction", or "Suffer". If you prefer AtG and Gen over StF and Suf, then you might like "The Gray Race" over some of their older albums. Just be sure to steer clear of "The New America", "No Substance", and "Into the Unknown".

The masses of humanity will always have to suffer.......2007-07-09
This album is definitely one of BR best albums. The songs are very upfront and agressive in your face punk rock songs. My favourite track off this album is 'What Can You Do.' Gregs vocal style on that song is insane, especially on the second verse. All the songs are very well crafted and are fast, hence the album is quite short but still the quality over quantity approach is present and that makes this an album any fan of punk rock should have.
Ive noticed that with a few of BR albums in my opinion that is that they will kick things off with a few super fast songs and then slow it down a bit pace wise before picking it up again and then slowing it down for the ending songs.
You'll see what i mean with this one from track 9...it gets really awesome and the last 5 songs are extremely good.
Basically if you dont have this one then go and get it now...also props to the cover art.

Bad Religion is known as a very influential punk band, and Suffer's the reason why.......2006-08-27
The amount of improvement in Bad Religion's musical talent from their first record, "How Could Hell be Any Worse?" (which is also excellent, check it out!) is astonishing. Greg Graffin developed his singing a lot, and that's the most noticable difference. Graffin's songwriting talent is astonishing, and with lyrics like this:
"There's a loser in the house, and a puppet on the stool,
And a crowded way of life, and a black reflecting pool,
And as the people bend, the moral fabric dies,
The country can't pretend to ignore its people's cries."
- You Are (The Government)
he's bound to make you think (and bring out the dictionary more often than not). As you can probably tell from the lyrics, Suffer is very politically oriented (as Bad Religion tends to be}, dealing with a whole range of ideas that I'm too lazy to list. So on the whole, the lyrics are pure genious, as is Greg Graffin.
The guitars, bass, and drums are great too, and evidently helped bring in the modern underground punk sound of today. Catchy riffs and fast beats make it very easy to listen to over and over again, especially songs like "1,000 More Fools", "Forbidden Beat", "Pessimistic Lines", and "You Are (the government)".
Bad Religion is an incredibly adept and talented band, and Suffer more than proves it. If you're interested in punk at all, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up.
The startling sole instance in which an albums repetition does not annoy me.......2006-04-21
one of the best albums of all time.......2006-04-10
you are the government is a great opener and will hook in bad religion newbies.
100 more fools is one of the best on here and deserves a place on all BR compilations..how much is enough is definately amazing too. i could go on and on. also noteworthy are land of competition, pessimistic lines, do what you want, and forbidden beat.
the only problem i have with this is the title track. that is the WEAKEST thing on the entire album. not bad, but i hate how it gets the most concert time out of everything on this album. not a bad song, but yeah it is the worst on one of the best BR albums.
all in all a 5/5. no control and against the grain are worthy opponents though!
