To the honorable Mr. Brill and his lovely wife, your June 6th, 2007 review of the CD Gravado Ao Vivo No Concecao was so touching to read about a couple who was at the legendary concert, and to hear drinking and dining were involved as a part of the festivities... I had to write and comment your review almost brought me to tears!

It's no coincidence Jobim studied Music and Architecture, they're fundamental building blocks, Jobim's contributuion to Popular Culture is immeasurable!

Jobim's lovely melodies were such a gift to the World after the War. They still are!

Thoughts turn to Veterans returning home to welcoming wives and jobs, new homes purchased, young families started, babysitters found, wonderful nights on the town, dressing up, eating, drinking, dancing and attending the latest foreign film, and Antonio Carlos Jobim's hits riding the airwaves, smooth sailing on a quiet sea, a soft warm breeze, drinking in the stars, time for repose, watch everyone on the dance floor swing, helping to move the numbers along.

Jobim's chords and chord changes are his own, a lifetime of pleasure are built into his melodies, I'm looking forward to buying and taking Gravado Ao Vivo No Concecao for a spin!

one of the great musical events.......2007-06-07

it was 1977 and my wife & i were lucky enough to be in rio at the concert. a giant quonset hut of a building. two stages. dancing. drinking. dining. what a nite to remember. breath taking. the music of the evening will never leave our heads (and bodies). everything mr rodrigues says about the recoring is absolutly true. one of the great musical events i've ever been to...and i've been to many.

Great review below -- I just wanted to add that Astrud Gilberto is João Gilberto's ex-wife. He has been married to Miucha for many decades. (Bebel Gilberto is their daughter.)

Also, for Miucha fans: one of her best-ever recordings is Rosa Amarela. It's out of print, but well worth tracking down. (It's a small group session, and her accompanists are among Rio's finest.)

A Historic Event.......2001-02-07

This live album is a milestone. Sharing the same stage we find four great names in Brazilian music. The first is Miucha, Chico Buarque's sister and Joao Gilberto's former wife. She had just recorded an album with Jobim, joining her sweet voice to his delicate piano. Vinicius, who is acclaimed as the most important poet of Brazilian music, has written several wonderful songs, among them: The Girl From Ipanema, How Insensitive, and No More Blues. Toquinho was still in his 20's when he and Vinicius started a musical partnership that lasted over ten years, till Vinicius passed away in 1980. Toquinho's youth and talent as a guitarist were the perfect complements to Vinicius' poetry. Together they produced several new sambas during this period. About Jobim... I don't think I need to introduce Jobim, but you may be interested in listening to him playing the flute (his first instrument was the piano, and he only played the guitar in the US to help establish the concept of bossa nova as being a combination of acoustic guitar and voice). Aloisio de Oliveira, director of the recording company, wrote about the concert: "I'm sure we are witnessing a historic event in the Brazilian music. In the near future we will look back in time and realize this." He was right.

This is a great album for fans of Antonio Carlos Jobim, and fans of Miucha.

Just Perfect!.......2004-10-12

This CD raises the expectation to be a fine representative of contemporary Brazilian music, given the high quality ingredients: Míucha, Bebel Gilberto (daughter), Chico Buarque (brother), all music and lyrics by The Poet: Vinicius de Morães. And Toquinho, Zeca Pagodinho, Daniel Jobim, and Yamandú.

Listening to it even more than satisfies this expection. Frankly, it is a perfectly produced and appealing CD, that avoids to offer 'clichés'. The songs are a perfect choice, showing the best of Vinicius's contemplative, intense love song lyrics: Tomara, Saudades do Brasil em Portugal, Medo de Amar, Canção de Nós Dois, Cem Por Cento, and others.

The absolute smasher on this one is Teleco Teco, a duet with Zeca Pagodinho, king of samba pagode. It starts with a choo-choo train type of riff by the copper section, which would make any big band leader instantaneously jealous, acccompanied by guitar and percussion. The subtle and perfectly piano, playing Count Basie's play-as-few-notes-as-you-can style gives a beautifl contrast. Courtesy of Cristovão Bastos.
And then there's the contrast between Miúcha and Zeca. Miúcha's warm, smooth voice, calm and controlled, contrasting with Zeca's playful and a bit naughty style. The band maintaining the contrast between up-tempo playing instruments, and the bass and piano that keep maintain their calmness and keep it all together. Apart from the vocals and instrumental performance, this piece is a masterpiece and example of perfect production

The production is perfect, and creating a relaxed ambiance throughout the CD, the band playing introvertedly but perfectly timed and balanced, putting the vocalists in the spotlights. With room for stunning instrumental solos, such as Jessé Sadock's flügelhorn solo in Saudades do Brasil em Portugal. And furthermore a spanish-classical guitar piece by Yamandú ( Valsa de Eurídice), lush and sensual tenor sax in Cem Por Cento.
Another aspect that was smartly done, is combining Brazilian soul (vocalists, band, The Poet, arrangements, production) with a jazz club ambiance: informal but impressive and attracting attention.

And finally there's the CD cover, showing Míucha on Rio de Janeiro's beaches, with the Sugar Loaf and Cristo Redentor in the background. Even if this is a bit stereotype, they perfectly promote what it is: an export product. But a high quality and appealing one for that matter. The perfect souvenir to matar saudades' for who got enchanted by the city and the country. And that's why I last minute-grabbed it in the airport. No regrets, of course.

Classy Brazilian ballads.......2002-12-14

An elegant collection of sweetly orchestrated, torchsong-y MPB ballads by vocalist Miucha (these days best known as the mother of Bebel Gilberto). The song selection includes material by Carlos Lyra, Joao Donato, Tom Jobim, Francis Hime, Vinicius De Moraes and others; many of the songwriters honored on this album also contribute glowing testimonials to the strength of Miucha's oft-underrated vocal work. Guinga, Francis Hime, Jacques Morelenbaum and others provide restained, effective musical backup. If you appreciate the swankier end of Brazilian pop, this is a fine album to check out.
