Excellent collection.......2006-06-08

I'm new to the world of Klezmer music, though I am beginning to play it professionally bit by bit here in New York, where it is alive and well in some pockets of the big town. This collection seems to be a good overview of some early recordings from some of the acknowleged masters of this historic-yet-living music.

The performances are spirited, some of the songs containing a level of earnest, unbridled energy and celebrations of musical skill rarely (if ever) found in performances given by dance and jazz musicians today (note: dazzling xylophone solo with deft band accompanyment, "Doina and Hora" by Jacob Hoffman and Kandel's Orchestra). Taraf de Haiduk, the Eastern European Gypsy ensemble, comes to mind as a notable exception to that lack of pure chutzpa in music today. Also notable are the sometimes melancholy-sounding melodies, contrasted by the high energy of the performances. Few artists of the current era are keeping the true soul of this music alive with its' original fire and spiritual sensibility--one exception is Andy Statman's clarinet work (he is also a master of Bluegrass mandolin). His music is worth paying attention to, as one example of a contemporary artist who, steeped in the roots of 'classic Klezmer,' continues to blaze new trails in the genre.

Notably missing in this collection is ANY semblance of liner notes, details on bands/musicians, years/dates of recordings, and photos. It's just a collection of songs, possibly even a 'bootleg' type collection (i.e., no copywrites/estate ownership of the music seems to have been honored by the producer/record company behind Klassic Klezmer).
