Folk Music of Yugoslavia [Import]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
These field recordings were made in 1969 and 1970, when there was still a united Yugoslavia. Yet the distinct cultural differences endured, at least as evidenced by the music in the excellent collection recorded by Wolf Dietrich. The music of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and the region of old Yugoslavia that included parts of historic Macedonia are all represented in this set. Most is very traditional music passed on via the oral history of the region from one generation to the next, and still pretty well preserved even as late as the '70s. Solo and group performances of vocal music are the highpoint of the recording, with solo and ensemble bagpipes also a major portion of the music here. Epic songs (one a singer accompanied by the unique fiddlelike gusle), folk tunes on frula (flutes), and numerous dance tunes by small ensembles fill out this remarkable set. --Louis Gibson

Great CD, played it over and over. Kept the toes tapping.Best tumbura music.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......1998-07-10

Good Croatian folklore music is very difficult to find in America. And this album by Veritas is extremely accurate to the original tombura music I remember as a child.

3 out of 5 stars A Good album, but not what I hoped for.......2002-04-14

If you are a bigger fan of chorus vocals in your Eastern European village music, then you won't be disappointed. What I had hoped for was a broader selection of instrumental dance tunes, and I took a chance on the cd, uncertain of what I would get in that regard. All in all, though, it is an interesting recording. I just find a lot of the singing diminishes the songs for me, personally. I'll certainly hang on to the cd, though. (And yes, it is predominantly Croatian.)

5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......1999-07-03

Even though the recording should have been titled Village Music of CROATIA (all but the last track are Croatian except Gaida Avasi which is Macedonian) this recording was one of the first quality field recordings of traditional Croatian Folk Music and is a must have for anyone who is interested in folklore and world music or good source music in general. It is paired in my collection with Village Music of Bulgaria also collected by Mr. Koenig and Ethel Raim.

5 out of 5 stars The CD is authentic, has historical value..........2000-08-01

but I am writing this review in order to show my anger. I am a Bosnian refugee and it really offended me that a reviewer of this item wrote some mumbo-jumbo which is supposed to be Serbo-Croatian and adorned it with his death wishes for "Slavs". On the positive side, it is a proof of that person's (if he is a person) Neanderthal intelligence. Nevertheless it is racist and disgusting. PLEASE REMOVE IT.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC.......1999-06-17

An excellent collection of music. Exotic, beautiful and refreshing melodies which here in North America people don't have the chance to hear very often. Get it you will love it!

The recent events in the former Yugoslavia give the music on volume five of the World Library of Folk and Primitive Music a special air of poignancy. Peter Kennedy, who was an associate of Alan Lomax, recorded all of the tracks at a folk festival in 1951, at a time when the Communist government believed it could forge a single national identity by showing the similarities between the various regional folk cultures. To that end, they gathered the best village musicians from all over what was then Yugoslavia and presented them in a series of concerts. Kennedy realized that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and recorded dozens of performers including ballad singers, tamburica players, choirs, and dance bands. All of the music here is of the highest quality, although some of the recordings from the stage are somewhat muted. This two-CD set includes a well-annotated 20-page booklet that features both the original notes from the 1954 LP version as well as corrections and additions that reflect recent scholarship. Although much of the music here will be primarily of interest to ethnomusicologists, there is still plenty here for the casual listener to enjoy. --Michael Simmons

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Village Music Recorded Live.......2001-11-11

This CD is a historical recording of the *best* *authentic* *live* Yugoslavian music that can be heard anywhere! It was recorded at a folk festival where village musicians and dancers from many regions of Yugoslavia gathered: Montenegro, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, & other areas. They participated in this event disregarding their ethnic & political differences. The music and dancing brought unity and peace - there was no indication of the explosive changes the future would bring . It includes unique instruments and vocalizations along with descriptions of the song and background information about the music and region. The songs, dances and music are "from the people and by the people" no finer definition and representation of folk music anywhere. Although, I have heard that some of the "intellectual" descriptions in the liner notes are not accurate (this from ethnics who originated from the areas represented), never-the-less there is no doubt that it was live music and a live festival which was recorded "on the spot". A great sample of beautiful authentic village sounds! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

5 out of 5 stars Wild and Wonderful Macedonian Traditional Music.......2004-12-12

This is the type of Macedonian music I longed to own and *finally* discovered! Who would have guessed it was played by Toronto musicians? (Although several have Balkan roots). The first group, "Staro Selo" ("Old Village") start slowly and power up in rhythm, speed, and interpretation. Two of the most remarkable pieces include the bagpipes (gaida) and tambura (lute) as key instruments, along with the highly stylized female vocals. This music is unparallelled for its magnetic appeal. The kaval (end-blown flute) and tapan (type of drum) complete the village-like root sound. The music is from Central Macedonia, one is in the 11/8 rhythm, others are in the 7/8 and one is in 4/4. Two of the musical tracks originate from Pirin, Bulgaria. The liner notes explain that all are love songs with playful lyrics. Unfortunately, the lyrics are omitted. Brennna MacCrimmon and Jayne Brown provide beautiful spine-tingling authentic Balkan vocals. They sound like the Bisserov Sisters or the Trakia Ensemble, with absolutley natural inflections! Each track sounds better than the previous one! This CD has some of the best selections of Balkan and Macedonian rhythms and sounds produced in this unique region of the world.

The second group, "Neda Voda", is my favorite. They sing Roma (Gypsy) tunes which have Turkish roots. The musicians chose to play the Turkish saz, a tambura, and some zurnas or clarinets. This pulsating and addictive music is enhanced with the beat of several darbukas and a tar drum. The rhythms are primarily 7/8, one is in 9/8 and one is 4/4. The music is sensuous and undulating, with Middle Eastern tsiftetelli (belly dance) undertones ...

The third group called "Mastika" play "Lupchevo", "Trip to Bulgaria" and "Pumpkin Paidushko" with a semi-jazzy improvistion that is most appealing and contagious. They primarily play stringed instuments with outstanding percussion.

The fourth and last group is called "Altin Yildiz Orkestar" ("Gold Star Band"). They play a series of evocative songs that make me sing, dance and shout joyfully ... no exaggeration! Track #14 "Rumelaj" is hypnotically spell-binding. It was originally played by Kalyi Jag, a Hungarian Roma group. #15 is of Turkish roots but from Macedonia, has all the undulating rhythms of the region. I can hear the makams but am unable to identify which ones are being used. #16 originated in Kosovo, first played and sung by the Roma singer Ibrahim Semsi. #17 has unique twists and turns, created by a famous Greek Roma clarinet player. #18 has a great beat played on the tabla that hooks the listener from the start. It also includes passionate accordion music . The last track, #19 is totally mesmerizing, a Turkish recording, translated in the liner notes as a beseechment to the Creator ... to provide the singer "the way" or a direction in life. This CD contains some of the most outstanding Macedonian music I have ever heard. It will not disappoint anyone who loves the music of the Balkans. Other similar CDs recommended are: "Kurbeti" (Albanian Roma), "Balkanarama" (Seattle, WA based American band with authentic Roma sound), and "Songs frorm the City of Roses" (Albanian). 2 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2003-06-10

I was expecting "professional" bands doing kolos with a lot of chromatic accordian. This is more like audio from a slavic studies class.

1 out of 5 stars Junk Siberian Music.......2002-01-06

I cannot belive anyone would buy such bad not worth hearing music why did this so called Serbian Band even trying to sell there music on amazon.com I just don't know why.

I am a serbian Romani Gypsy and I know good and bad music when I hear it this CD I would rate at the bottom of the list, don't wast your money on thus one.

4 out of 5 stars Anthology Of Serbian Folk Music.......2000-09-03

If you are looking for a collection of sing-along bar songs, this not the CD for you. It is a wonderful analysis of Serbian music in a very intellectual sense. Most of the cd is comprised of very old people singing very old songs.

There are a few cuts from Banat that are lively and fun, the rest are very authentic but dirge like songs.

The write ups in the booklet are great, a perfect companion to the CD and what makes the CD a scholarly work. It allows you to understand the different musical styles in the different areas and offers authentic renditions of those songs.

A true piece of Serbian history, captured on CD.
