About the Author F. Alton Everest died on September 3, 2005 at the age of 95 in Santa Barbara, California. He was co-founder of Moody Institute of Science in the Los Angeles area in 1945 and served there in film production for 25 years. The 16mm science documentaries produced at MIS have won awards at Edinburgh, Venice, Bilboa, Paris, and Florence film festivals as well as numerous American festivals. They have been translated into 30 languages and used in more than 100 countries. He was Assistant Professor of Electrical engineering at Oregon State University (1936-1945) and, after retirement from MIS in 1970, was Senior Lecturer in the Communication Department at Hong Kong Baptist College, where he established a course in cinematography. In 1973 he served as a judge at the 16th Asian Film Festival held in Taipei, the first westerner to have that honor. During World War II he served as Section Chief at the University of California Division of War Research, San Diego (Office of Scientific Research and Development), directing research in underwater sound. He served as a consultant in acoustics for 15 years, designing radio and recording studios in the U.S. and 16 other countries, acoustical correction in churches, auditoriums and civic spaces, and working with architects in new construction. Everest is probably best known for his seven books on acoustics published by Tab-McGraw Hill and his 6 chapters in Handbook of Sound Engineering, published by Howard W Sams Company. Merton's widely used text provides an overview and synthesis of finance theory from the perspective of continuous-time analysis. It covers individual financial choice, corporate finance, financial intermediation, capital markets, and selected topics on the interface between private and public finance. For this revised edition a new section on managing university endowments has been added. The book begins with a foreword by Paul Samuelson. About the Author Paul Samuelson was the first American recipient of the Nobel Prize in economics. Born in Indiana, he did his undergraduate work at the University of Chicago and earned a Ph.D. at Harvard University, where he studied with Alvin Hansen. He taught for several decades at M.I.T. Samuelson's first major work was Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947), a mathematical treatment of economic theory and principles. Later he made extensive contributions to professional journals in virtually all areas of economic theory. Often he would be the first to offer a mathematical proof of a proposition when most other economists could sense it only intuitively. In 1948 he published the first edition of Economics, one of the most successful and influential college texts of our time. It provided an extremely comprehensive treatment of Keynesian economics and microeconomic principles, and played an important part in educating a generation of economists. Despite Samuelson's role in providing mathematical refinements for economic theory, he has always maintained a public posture, welcoming opportunities to share his views. He was an economic adviser to President John F. Kennedy and wrote a popular column for Newsweek from 1966 to 1981. He has generally favored an interventionist approach in policy matters, especially when it has involved using the tax system to battle poverty, fight inflation, or balance the budget. One of the world's most respected economists, Samuelson is responsible for rewriting considerable parts of economic theory. Overall, at this price, this is a must-have pack for any beginner, and might be useful for the occasion "quick check" of the work of many composers. Do not expect many detail, nor references to all the works of some composers; I often got frustrated with the lack of detail in some cases, but in general, the booklet is very effective for a quick reference. You will need more titles that offer more complete information, and you won't truly learn to love classical music just by reading it, but it is small and compact. It really puzzles me why Naxos did not include a full index of composers, a serious omission. To find a particular composer you will have to look for it yourself in over 500 pages. Also, the separation of the text is not so good, making the search even a bit slower. The lack of the index is truly annoying and I am sure it will be corrected in future editions. Even with a few weaker pieces and the lack of the index, at this price, there isn't much to argue about. This is truly a bargain that you should not miss. I would also recommend the A-Z of Opera, which offers a bigger booklet with over 700 pages, focusing on opera works and mentioning several composers that are absent from the A-Z of Classical. That other booklet has a very complete index, and much clearer text layout and separation, that's the way both booklets should have been designed. The two sets complement each other very well. Disc one is great....disc two doesn't exist...beware.......2007-07-05 I have the original 16-track version of this recording and couldn't agree more with the glowing comments left by others. However, this listing is somewhat misleading as the reviews mention that it is a newer release with a bonus disc containing 17 extra tracks. Since other reviews and the Alia Vox website itself mention that such a thing exists, I went ahead and ordered it, only to receive the same single disc version I already had. Amazon tells me the double one isn't available, so beware. It's still great music though. However, it doesn't mean I don't like it. By contraries, it's so beautiful for me to forget any doubt its original. I must pick up to describe, the *Les Boréades (Abaris), tragédie en musique*, its tempo is slower than other version, but so romantic to attract me to listen again and again. The symphony imaginaire recorded live, is for him a personal intimate selection. This is intelligent, sensitive and extremely well played music by Rameau. I stumbled upon this recording after being impressed by the last Bartoli recording with Les Musiciens du Louvre. Happy me! The SACD is worth it. A beautiful bit of late Baroque Color.......2005-09-12 I plan to give copies of this CD to my friends whose musical taste froze 35 years ago and who think of Baroque music as just so much "sewing machine music". Rameau was an imaginative instrumental colorist, and these dance pieces, taken from several of his operas and ballets, show him at his best in that regard. While the conceit of calling this a "symphony" may seem strange, the pieces are arranged to form a nice sequence and, most importantly, are engagingly played by this early music ensemble. The interpretation is lively and the playing stylish. The sonics are detailed without being analytical. I would recommend this to anyone as an introduction to the joys of French Baroque, but would encourage a follow-up purchase of one of the full operas. Average customer rating: Good job Masterful! I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far. Masterful!.......2005-06-15 This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording. Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07 I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. Four different scale and chordal arpeggio forms are shown for each major, minor, and dominant seventh chord. In each key the basic I-IV-V7 chord progression is shown in four different locations on the bass fingerboard. Also included are whole tone and chromatic scales. Finally, numerous movable chordal arpeggio forms are presented on 12 types of chords. About the Author Al Hendrickson was born in Eastland, Texas. He became recognized as a premier jazz guitarist during stints with the Artie Shaw band and the famed Gramercy Five. Al later played with the Benny Goodman band and sextet. Known for his outstanding rhythm and chord playing, he became much sought after by leading band leaders. Al performed with Woody Herman, Johnny Mandel, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Bellson, Ray Noble and Neal Hefti among others. Al settled in Los Angeles and became one of the busiest studio guitarists in America. He estimates that he played on over 5000 film soundtracks from 1939 to 1980! In addition, Al backed such notable musicians and singers as Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Nat "King" Cole, Benny Carter and Lena Horne. He played in orchestras led by Lalo Schifrin, Nelson Riddle and Quincy Jones. Art Orzeck was born in Atoka, Oklahoma but was raised in Rhode Island. He worked as a machinist at Lockheed and did work as a musician but was forced to suspend his musical endeavors when he joined the Army in World War II. The music scene after the war was in a depressed state so Art used the GI Bill to earn degrees leading up to a Ph.D. in psychology. He then landed a job with the Veterans Administration Hospital system. He is an accomplished guitarist and bassist and has co-authored numerous guitar and bass books with Al Hendrickson. This is Battle in the prime of her career -- this is one of those albums you will find yourself coming back to.     A comprehensive study text for students beginning a serious study of jazz. The first part of the book begins by teaching elements of jazz phrasing, articulation, vibrato and interpretation of rhythms through exercises and original pieces. Next, the book encourages improvisational skills through both theoretical and technical studies of scales and chords. The second half of the book builds on the skills learned in the first part with an in-depth study of the theory, which underlies improvisational techniques including scales, modal concepts and chord construction. Ear training, particularly the development of the ability to hear chord progressions is also emphasized.
    
    About the Author
    William Bay is president of Mel Bay Publications, Inc. He is an accomplished guitarist and trumpet player and has performed on both instruments in a wide variety of professional settings. He is experienced as a performer and composer of music ranging from jazz and rock to the classics and sacred. He received his bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis and his master's from the University of Missouri. Norwegian-born Edvard Grieg has created many works for the orchestra, and this 6-CD box set contains almost all of them. Neeme Jarvi handles the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the choirs very well. The sound is crystal clear and has the perfect digital sound for every CD player/stereo.

For the long works, the Piano Concerto is attention-grabbing and beautiful. The Symphonic Dances and the Norwegian Dances are lively and tremendously extraordinary. The lesser-known Symphony in C Minor should be more recognized, as it is as powerful as other symphonies, like Mahler's first and Beethoven's sixth. For the short works, In Autumn and Landkjenning can be best described as sheer masterpieces.

For Peer Gynt, it is good to hear the first digitally-recorded authentic version. The suite version is just not enough for that full listening experience. NOTE: if you want to buy a Peer Gynt that includes the complete dialogue, I would recommend conductor Ole Kristian Ruud's version with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; the dialogue lengthens the 90-minute work by two hours.

To know the rest is to listen to them straight through. All the works in this box set (especially the Piano Concerto) should be a possession for all Grieg-lovers.

This box-set a must have for any Grieg lovers.
Neeme Jarvi is very good.

In first CD, there is a powerful performance of Piano Concerto by Zilberstein.She is also great in F.Liszt recordings (at DG Classics). In second CD, works for string orchestra (including, famous Holberg Suite) to be found. And in 3rd and 4th CDs, marvellous recordins of Peer Gynt and Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd, the Crusader)to be found.This works are the first recordings of complete score. Still, speakers to be present at Peer Gynt.And Funeral March for R. Nordraak is very influence in 4th CD.The wind ensemble of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is very good...

In 5th CD, there is an unknown work by Grieg: Symphony in C-minor. This work written in early period, but didn't perfomed often. Still, this work's name is "Forbidden Symphony"...And then, a majestic work "Land-Sighting" to be found. This is very successful choral work of composer and he written in a heavenly tone:E Major...And then, there is an unknown work again, an incomplete opera: "Olav Trygvason"... Grieg written this work on a libretto by his friend, Bjornson (a famous poet of Norway), but he could finish first act...

And in last CD, there are other vocal works, and his beatiful work: "Old Norwegian Melody with Variations". And then, 5 Songs to be found. This songs originally written for voice and piano (like other many songs) but he later orchestrated these works.And the first song "The First Meeting" was discovered in 80's and still, they used a new edition, published from new founded manuscript, so this is the first recording of Grieg's beatiful song.

In other words: this box-set is excellent and Highly recommended.

Wonderful recordings, slightly marred by lack of texts.......2003-04-09

Jarvi has been a fine advocate of Scandinavian music over the last 30 years. Even of those such as Grieg and Sibelius who you would think no longer needed advocacy. Most of these recordings were warmly welcomed on their releases and several won awards. And it's nothing but a pleasure to see them reappear again. The orchestral playing is sumptuous, but the real stand out is the singing of Barbara Bonney on several CDs.

This is now the fourth or fifth release for some of these CDs, first came the individual volumes, then the full price box, then releases on budget DG Classikon, and now a Collector's Edition box at half the price, but sadly minus the texts to CDs 2,3 and 6. This won't matter so much in the orchestral songs, CD6, where the texts to Bergtekne, Bergliot etc. are available in other releases or on the Lieder web page, but CDs 2 and 3 are currently the only complete recording of Peer Gynt and the sung or spoken texts are not available outside sheet music collections. Personally (as someone more interested in the vocal music than the orchestral) I would try and locate the original volumes, but at least DG has given those who don't feel the extra expense is justified a cheaper option.

Further recommendation: Anne Sofie von Otter's recording of the Haugtussa song cycle.
