This compilation is everything you want to hear on jazz divas and so much more. You fall in love with the CD as soon as it is on. EVERY song - no exception is awesome. They are not the usual stuff you get on the "greatest hits" CD's, but stuff you may not have necessarily heard, but really awesome.

Must have CD to accompany Verve Remixed, Vol.3.......2006-03-31

I found it very interesting to compare the originals on this CD to the remixed versions found in Verve Remixed, Vol. 3, especially since some songs were relatively obscure. On its own, the CD is great for a relaxing road trip or even a cocktail party of appropriate theme.

A Good Collection of Various Genres.......2005-09-04

This Album Gives you a little bit of everything. Tracks 2,10 and 13 are my favorite. I would recomend this album to anyone who is trying to get a taste of the various Jazz/R&B styles.

Nice Selection.......2005-05-11

There isn't an insane amount of commentary to say about these excellent caliber songs. The names and artists speak for themselves. I'm also surprised that this one is so much cheaper then the other. Anyway, the selection of songs is awesome. With giants like Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Jimmy Smith, and Dinah Washington the selection is sure to be a hit no matter which songs of theirs are chosen. If you want a good mix of pure unaltered 'chill' jazz, buy it...it's not even expensive.

Incredible originals!.......2005-04-09

Do yourself an enormous favour and slap down the4-7 dollars this album costs. You will delight your ears with some great classics that give you insight into the newly reworked mixes. Excellent!

These songs are pure gold. Personally, I really enjoy the first 6 tracks. I mean, if it were a CD consisting of just Manteca or just Sinnerman, I would buy it on the spot. Believe it or not, after I listened to Manteca (which means lard in Spanish I found out), I bought many single-versions of the song. I Have Arturo Sandoval, Dizzy Gillespie, Jeff Golub, Poncho Sanchevez, and Woody Herman's versions of Manteca; I must say that Verve has chosen the best one again (Dizzy G's) for thier record. Props Verve, and keep up the good work.

Why can't more CD's be priced like this fine offering from the Verve vaults?
For the cost of a couple of gallons of gasoline this music will take you further and you'll get plenty of mileage out of these classics. Beginning with the Carnegie Hall live recording by Dizzy Gillespie of "Manteca" in 1961, this disc will either take you down memory lane or set you on a new path of jazz discovery. Jazz means many different things to many different people, often discredited as being too cerebral or just plain high music, jazz often gets a bad rap. There is no clear definition because like many other genres there are many sub categories. Within the broad context of jazz this disc is diversified . Several great songbirds are featured including the marvelous, so nice the used here twice, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald(two songs too), Betty Carter and Astrud Gilerto. Unlike the remixed versions featured on "Verve/Remixed 2," the complete songs display the full spectrum and range of depth of some these artists. For example, Nina Simone's vocals on "Sinnerman"show the gospell influenced style more clearly than on the remixed version and her piano skills are demonstrated along with her jazz interaction with other instrumentalists. It is a thing of beauty. The live version of "Brother , Where Are You"? by Oscar Brown Jr. has the passion of the Civil Rights movement, a slow swagerring, gritty song that builds momentum as the audience claps along joining the artist in unison in approval of his message. "Blues For Brother George Jackson"(check your history) fits the mold of what most non jazz people think of as jazz with it's multiple horns led by Archie Shepp with yet another Civil Rights era song. I would be remiss without mentioning the exceptional Latin influenced songs by Cal Tjader and Willie Bobo entitled "Soul Sauce" and "Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries" respectively. These two songs alone are worth the price of admission. It is worth comaparing the versions to the remixed versions to fully appreciate both the originals and the great job with the new interpretations. Recommended as is but even more so as a companion to the remixed versions. A super compilation for traditional jazz fans or those interested in the roots of "Verve Remixed /2."

Real Value for Money!.......2004-01-06

Even if you only liked two or three of the tracks here, you'd still be getting a great deal for your money. That said, every track here is a winner and it's easy to see why these were picked for remixing on Volume 2. Virtually all of them feature wonderful percussion, which usually translates into arresting remix sounds (like the mighty Six Degrees Records roster!). If you don't own any Nina Simone, start right here with the mighty 10 minute "Sinnerman," used to dazzling effect in the "Thomas Crown Affair." Her "Black is..." shows us what a unique talent she was. As far as Volume 3 goes, it will interesting to see if Verve ever gives the OK for some remixes of Getz, Bird or the mighty Trane. Perhaps people are scared to touch those, but regardless of your position of remixing, Verve Unmixed 2 is the perfect present to get for someone, especially if you're CHEAP!!!

Verve Unmixed - the Sequel........2003-09-07

"Verve Unmixed 2" is the companion CD to "Verve Remixed 2," in which a handful of dance DJs successfully revamp several jazz classics. Here, each track appears in its pure original version, giving the listener a tour through some of the genre's most respected artists. The album kicks off with the infectious bite of Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Ella Fitzgerald's "Slap That Bass" and Ramsey Lewis' "Do You Wanna" stand out pretty well, while Cal Tjader's stunning "Soul Sauce (Guachi Guaro)" is a timeless fusion of traditional jazz and Latin flavor. Another winner is the beautifully piano-laced "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," which features Nina Simone's voice in all its aching glory. There isn't much more for me to say, as the music really speaks for itself. If you already have "Verve Remixed 2," it would be foolish to pass on this release which not only has the original versions but also one of the most impressive tracklistings I've seen on any compilation.

More classics.......2003-09-05

This follow-up disc is every bit a great as the first. Do not let the low price scare you into thinking it's something less than high quality. A must have disc...fans and those unfamiliar with the Verve label will both enjoy that this music is BACK!!!!

Buy don't Worship.......2005-05-11

Before I start, all the songs on this CD are excellent songs. The actual compilation of the cd is what troubles my somewhat. I have to agree with the first reviewer in that the main focus of this CD is female vocalists rather than a good, all-around jazz mix. Verve Remix Vol. 1 did an excellent job mixing these songs, but I feel that the song selection could'be been more varied. To contradict myself, it is a good thing that they unified the theme of this CD by choosing mostly soft, slow, pure female jazz vocalists; however, using a conjoint theme isn't always the correct decision...as with this CD. I personally thing that the paramount project of Verve was thier Verve Unmixed Vol. 2, due to the fact that volume 2 contained a plethora of variegated jazz mixed that amalgamated to form a unit, even though each song was ultimately different from the last.
But, I deviate from my review. This CD has good songs if you want to own a nice collection of female jazz vocalists I suggest buying it.

this thang here is a track meet!
willie bobo is the starter's pistol setting this thing off... i like them, but carmen mcrae and astrud gilberto kinda stumble out the gate, but dinah washington picks it up and IT'S ON from there on out! the batton is handed on to sista nina (rest her soul) and there remains little speculation as to how this race is gonna end... some real flawless music from there on out...

tony scott's thang... i love the mid-eastern feel of this joint, it's just out of place with the rest of this, which is understandable because this disc IS just made to showcase the original artists that the downtempo producers used for their remixed version...
other than that, my only real complaint is that the tracks are sooo short - the vast majority being under 3 minutes (this might account for the pricing)... but for 5 bucks you really cant beat the quality and the vocal diversity this thing offers.

this is 'sunday sophistication'... if you dont really appreciate traditional jazz vocalists then you should probably move on, but i strongly recommend this for true fans and anyone sitting on the fence.

Hands Down the BEST Deal Going!!.......2002-10-09

Honestly I am at a lost to why this CD is so [inexpensive]. I fear its price does it a dis-service as it implies poor quality. This is an unbelieveable array of smooth, yet funky songs by original artists. Particularly apt for fall, the general attitude of this CD is relaxed, but be careful, you'll notice that some part of your body will be moving. I find it's great for driving because with the exception of the last track, there's a great continuity between the songs. Party music is great, but in the real world people don't party 24hrs, for all those other times, this is the CD to listen to.

I can't help it..........2002-08-30

As much as I enjoyed The Verve Remixed, I had to like this CD better. This one I'll listen to when I want to blast music for fun, when I'm studying, when I'm relaxing, just about any time. The Remixed version I'll take to the gym. It was an adventurous idea to remix all these classics, and for the most part, I like them. But they just don't have the same quality as when they're in their original form. For example, my favorite track on the unmixed is "Feelin' Good." I LOVE it - Nina Simone starts it out a capella, then what seems like a whole brass section blasts in to emphasize the point, that is, feelin' good. Remixed, there is no a capella, and therefore, no excellent entrance of the brass. Big drawback. I just love this CD. It has got a great variety of fantastic jazz artists. Buy it if you love jazz just as it is. I don't think these are songs that can be improved upon.

A Must-Have for Owners of "Verve Remixed.".......2002-08-30

This is the companion piece to the compilation "Verve Remixed," which had dance-interpretations of classic jazz tunes. On this album, we get the original versions, and they all shine in their pristine glory. The track listing is flawless, sampling the work of Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughn, and other must-have legendary jazz artists. The Verve label has rightfully earned its status as one of the leading names in jazz, and they've come up with a dynamite album whose pricetag makes it an appealing bargain. Those who own "Verve Remixed" shouldn't even have to ask if they need to get this album. Both discs compliment each other like mashed potatoes and gravy.

It's nice to have the unmixed versions of these songs. A good value for all these songs. These GU limited edition releases sure are a deal.

This mini album contains 5 different songs (or technically 4 because The Drums is basically a reworking of The Drive), and a total of 8 tracks. You get the two versions of the incredible tribal dance floor anthem Resonate (original and DJ Vibe), 3 versions of what I feel is a terrible house track, Shakedown, by Stacy Burket feat. Audio Angel (cheesy repetitive lyrics that drove me nuts), The Drive, The Drums, and Deep Dark Jungle.

The Drive and Drums are both very hard, tribal beats that suck you right in with just the rights doses of drum mixtures to keep it very intersting and very sexy. I love both of these. Deep Dark Jungle just goes nowhere and the repetitive dull beats are not worth repeating.

I would still purchase this CD to get 4 slammin tracks out of the 8 on this disc, the 2 Resonates and the The Drive and The Drums. These 4 are not to be missed.

One other note that these mixes are all very long except The Drums which is 6:28; the rest are all 9:47-11:35 in length, so despite being containing only 8 tracks, they quickly fill up the entire CD.
