The Art of Gigli.......2007-03-09

After Caruso's death, Beniamino Gigli became one of the most renowned tenors in the world. His rich voice well justified his reputation. While some of his mannerisms (the little "cries" and "catches" in his voice) can be a bit overdone, they were not atypical of the time. A few reactions to specific cuts.

"Celeste Aida" from Verdi's opera is smoothly sung; his rich voice serves to good effect. As already noted, the little "cries" are unfortunate, but hardly an issue. His higher notes flow smoothly from lower ones, in a seamless fashion. It would have been nice to hear him try for the piano at the end, but he did not choose to do so. Any way you slice it, a nice version of a glorious aria.

"La donna e mobile" is taken at a rather slow pace. It is smoothly sung but does not really catch the spirit of the wretched Duke. He shows wonderful breath control. This is more a workmanlike than scintillating version. On the other hand, "Che gelida manina" is wonderful. Smooth, elegant singing. A very well done high note. An iconic version.

The twin arias from "Tosca," "Recondita armonia" and "E lucevan le stelle" are very well executed. His rendering of the final "la vita" in the latter aria is, again, noteworthy.

And now for something completely different. . . . "Funiculi funicula" is spritely sung, in good spirits, and it is a lot of fun! Most enjoyable. "O Sole mio," likewise, is well rendered. As previously noted, some "off putting" cries, but the warm, full voice more than makes up for such mannerisms. He does not overpower this song with operatic technique. The end result is most satisfying.

"La danza" befuddled the great Caruso (in his version, his breathing fell apart at one point). But not Gigli. Well sung, good breath control. Bravo Gigli!

Back to opera. . . . "Nessun dorma" is well sung. The vocalization is smooth. Gigli's voice soars over orchestra and other voices. The final "Vincero" rings out.

While this CD is not without some questions, as noted above, it is worth 5 stars for its full portrayal of the work of Gigli. As such, it can be recommended for anyone who wants a comprehensive introduction to this singer.

Gigli Is A Wonderful Singer!.......2006-07-31

It's an honor for me to be "the first" to review this recording for Amazon. As "opera lovers" know, Gigli was "the greatest tenor in the world" for many years after the death of Caruso. If you haven't heard Gigli, a great treat is in store for you! He had "penache" and drama in the way he sang. Plus he had a beautiful tonal quality! I could go on and on but if you "pass this guy up" you'll be missing some beautiful and dramatic singing from a "world class" singing actor.

Besides listening to Gigli on Cd, you'd be doing yourself a favor to buy a movie in which Gigli appears and sings. The movie is called "Non Ti Scordar di Me". I'll try to find it on amazon or from "The Bel Canto Society" and give it a "review" also. It's an "old movie" but it has a VERY touching story, is well acted, and you get to see and hear Gigli which is a great treat since he has been gone for at least 50 years. He "comes alive" in this CD and in the movie. You will "thrill" to the sound of his voice. Enjoy! Email:boland7214@aol.

I agree with the first review comment and again certain Italian rock musicians are progressive without cajoling music as an experiment which is what I think a lot of it ended up in the late sixties and seventies. It's about time that we all determine what should be classified as masterpieces in years to come as historians have done with classical music. For example Fabrizio de Andre's songs and music should be classified as masterpieces and dare anyone oppose them.

Wonderful prog pop from this great Italian Prog band.......2003-03-14

Le Orme always had a well-developed sense of melody and the ability to string shorter ideas together into a cohesive whole (i.e., Felona e Serona). However, whereas earlier songs (sometimes) seemed like undeveloped fragments, on Storia o Leggenda, the shorter pieces stand on their own. This is a wonderful recording that has all of the classical posturing, analog synthesizers, rhythmic complexity, and the melodrama of their earlier works yet presented in a much more stripped down manner and is somewhat more mature sounding. One does not need to understand Italian to appreciate this disc. An absolute must for Le Orme fans and fans of Italian progressive rock.

Solid effort........2001-01-04

Storia O Leggenda is far better than either Smogmagica or Verita Nascoste the recordings that preceded and followed this effort. Where Le Orme was still wrestling with modifying their sound, the efforts here are much more consistent in both composition and production. Less poppy more progressive. Music that cannot be compared with any other rock you've heard before. A valuable addition to anyone's collection who enjoys progressive rock.

A wonderful selection of Gigli songs.......2003-01-23

Anyone who likes Gigli (and its hard not to) will enjoy this set of 2 CDs. There are about 2 hours of recordings from arias to popular songs, some of which I can still remember my mother listening to when I was a little boy. Gigli had one of the great voices of the past century and it is a delight to have this representative collection from his long career. The sound quality is generally good but does vary from recording to recording.

This review will have to be based on my knowledge of the vinyl releases of these performances, so there's a caveat about the sound of this CD release: I don't know how good the transfers will be. Based upon the digital transfers I have heard of Gigli's voice, I can say anyone who enjoys a great lyric tenor voice, backed by heartfelt passion and stunning techniques can't go wrong here. Gigli was one of those rare performers who could traverse back and forth between dramatic roles and lyric roles with neither the voice nor the styles suffering for it. I will say that Bocelli fans should find Beniamino Gigli to their taste, if they can get past the antiquated sound. I do admit to a similarity between the two voices, although Gigli had the power needed to sing Manrico and Canio on stage and unamplified.
For my taste, I like Gigli even better than Bjorling, which is high praise, believe me. His piano (soft) singing was sweet as honey, with passionate high notes that thrill the ear and the heart. Mario Lanza fans should also take note of Gigli. Many of the admirable points of Lanza's singing were present in spades in Gigli's work. The older singer seemed to feel the music he sang deep within his soul, just as Lanza did.
Andrea Chenier was one of Gigli's greatest roles, as well as Rodolfo in Puccini's La Boheme. One point about his singing is well worth pondering: Gigli had a long, long career, filled with hard and passionate singing, but his voice retained it's expressive viola d'amore sweetness to the end of his career. Those interested in a finely honed singing technique ought to listen to him just for the vocal lessons. Gigli was an expert with head voice, as well as full-throated singing reminiscent of Enrico Caruso, and he was not afraid of using and mixing both techniques in the same aria or song.
