How many times have African rhythms traveled back and forth across the Atlantic? Beyond count, of course, but with the Africando All Stars, a band fronted by different African vocalists on each track, they're in very sure hands. It's where Africa meets America, under the direction of Boncana Maiga, who also wrote most of the music. The result is a near perfect Afro-Cuban album that sizzles from start to finish with exquisite arrangements, making the vocalists seem almost like the cherries on the cake. But with talent like Mali's Salif Keita, whose "Ntoman" might be the standout track, it's impossible to go wrong. Add when you add Lokua Kanza and mbalax star Thione Seck to the mix, you have something utterly explosive, with depth, joy, and musicianship that makes you want more. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars salsa music at its african best!.......2007-06-15

Heard pepita and knew the other cuts had to be dynamic. OMG the CD is all that. The blend, the mix of languages and I don't know what they are saying but then again music can be appreciated regardless of knowledge of it. The music and the rhythms touch my soul. They make me want to dance all day long. The music speaks to me like no other. Its' a high energy CD. Buy this CD!!!!!!!! if you ar a salsa lover - especially. And folks say Samba is better? What??????????????

5 out of 5 stars One of the best salsa albums I own........2006-11-23

Truly one of the best salsa albums I own, and I known a thing or two about salsa music, I've been collecting it and dancing to it for years. A great album for dancing or just listening, not very slow or very fast paced, always just the right tempo. I personally recommend "BETECE",
"SCANDALO" and "DONI DONI". Great salsa classics!

I used to think that salsa music wouldn't sound right in a language other than Spanish, I'm glad to say I was wrong... oh so wrong!

I would tell anyone who wants to enjoy truly brilliant salsa rhythms to buy this album, it's worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Mandali by Africando.......2006-11-10

Mandali is one of the best CD's by Africando. My favorites on this CD are #1 Mandali, #5 Mopao, and #8 Betece. These are tracks that make your feet and body move without any effort.

5 out of 5 stars one of the most beautiful and progressive salsa ensembles today............2006-07-25

I am honestly surprised that this album is so hard to find on the salsa shelves in mainstream CD stores. "Mandali" is one of the tightest, smoothest and most intricate salsa albums I have heard in a very long time. For those familiar with the sound of salsa, it is evident that the rhythms, instrumentation and call and response style to the coro is derived from traditional African music.

Africando is a smooth ensemble that showcases vocalists from countries including Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal and Cuba. We hear the vocalists singing in their native languages of French, Wolof, (Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal) and Spanish (Cuba) and it sounds divine. Along with the instruments we have come to recognize as part of Cuban-style salsa (timbales, horns, etc.) each singer (be they African or Latino) truly makes the music their own. You might recognize popular songs like "Pepita" (track 6) on this album, as well as the title cut, "Mandali."

This music will lift your soul, the beautiful vocalists with their expressive interpretations will have you hooked and it will make the rainiest of days a little more bright and enjoyable. Highly reccomended.........

5 out of 5 stars What can be said that hasn't? The liner notes are not good.......2005-04-18

Yeah, yeah, I am sweating the small details here. However, there is no way any one human can be expected to understand all of the languages spoken on this CD, certainly at least a song name translation to english would have been nice.
The fact I am upset about this should only tell you how much I want to know about the amazing music in this CD. The arrangements are absolutely incredible and having some instrumental variety, each well suited for the voice of the vocalist singing.

    3 out of 5 stars Africando's Latest.......2007-05-11

At first many of the melodic hooks seemed all too familiar and similar to previous releases and the lead vocals on most of the tracks lack the feel of the Baloba or Mandali albums. But then I got around to listening more carefully and 3 tracks stand out above all: 'Bogne Sirala' & 'Malawoo' bring in a new flavor for Africando with piano-led melodies going in different directions and the coros widen the range even further. 'Mario' is still signature Africando, classic mid tempo, melodic lead vocals and sharp horn sections.

This group is way above the usual level for African Salsa. Great vocals, flute and violin work is combined with very interesting arrangements. The title track (done twice) is the only bummer on this exceptional CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Top-flight Latin pop.......2001-01-17

I couldn't agree less with Marecandja: I find "Aicha" and "La Vie en Rose" extremely fun to listen to, precisely BECAUSE I already know the originals. That's half the glory in a band like Africando--doing salsa and rhumba versions of familiar tunes, reinterpreting them and showing them in a completely new light. From their originals to their covers, I find Africando's stuff rock-solid, and I have a degree in musical geology.

4 out of 5 stars Don't like Aïcha and La Vie En Rose!.......2000-01-11

Well, Africando, the Senegalese Afro-Cuban group make real good salsa music! This album is good as the others. But I don't like the two songs called Aïcha, plus La Vie en Rose. The reason is simple : those are songs made by other singers, and I know their original versions, thus it's a little hard for me when I hear those Afro-Cuban versions!

5 out of 5 stars Makes you wanna move!! (dance).......1999-03-16

Aicha' was the first song I heard from a station in Boston from this group, after that I was hooked!!! Thank you Amazon .com, It seems that you were the only ones who had it!! So easy just a click away! Every song on this CD I enjoy, especially the first one, "Am Saxxul", Don't ask me what it means but I love it!! Hey Who says learning another language isn't fun!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic combination!.......2006-10-29

Africando was one of the first releases to incorporate New York Latin Musicians and Senegal singers. The combination and quality of the final product is absolutely fabulous and well presented. The recording features Papo Pepin on congas and Bobby Allende on bongo drums. These two veteran percussionist are some of the best in the latin field and truly shine throughout the production. The African singers from Senegal are amazing and the combination of Latin & African influences provide a great listening experience. I really enjoyed it and I'm sure you will too!

5 out of 5 stars Salsa at its very best, and by an African !.......2002-07-24

The Africando band consists of, arranger Boncana Maiga and various singers from Africa ( mostly from Senegal ), and various South American musicians.
This is salsa at its very best, it is as good as Ricardo Lemvo !
And isn't it ironic, that just as with Ricardo Lemvo, the primary forces here are African !
Its kind of strange listening to Salsa sung in French, and various African languages, however these African singers are the very best from Africa, and you couldn't replace them with any Latin singers, it wouldn't be the same.
This particular album is possibly the best of their first 5 albums :- Trovador, Tierra Tradicional, Gombo Salsa, Baloba, Mandali, but all these albums have some terrific tracks. My favourite Africando track is a song on Mandali, sung by the great Koffi Olomide, called Mapao.
Like all Salsa this music has depth, because it has complex instrumental arrangements, but is very melodic, and very uplifting. This is happy music, it is mood changing.
I don't play it too much, because I never want to tire of listening to it, because it makes me feel so good.
This album is a must for all Salsa, and African music lovers.
I have a large African and Latin American music collection, and I rate this album as one of the best.
I am eagerly looking forward to the next album.

5 out of 5 stars Infectious and uplifting!.......1999-04-11

I highly recommend this AFRICANDO CD. If you like Latin/African music, you'll love the infectious sounds and rhythms of AFRICANDO. The instrumentation is complex and extremely rich. It has a very danceable beat. I can't stop listening to it!

A well chosen compilation of 12 songs, "Afro Latino" features artists from both sides of the Atlantic, including some based in the USA. The marriage of African and Cuban rhythm and tradition is incredibly fertile, witnessed by the many different takes on this most sensual and swinging mix from Cuba, Senegal, Angola, Cape Verde, The Congo, and even Peru. From the acoustic guitar-led Quarteto Oriente (playing in Cuba's "oriente" style) to Congo's soukous supergroup Les 4 Etoiles, the legendary Orchestra Baobab and Africando, this is a top flight introduction to the many flavors of Afro-Cuban music. Included from Putamayo's Artist label are the salsa tinged Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca and well established Congolese guitarist/songwriter Sam Mangwana, now residing in the USA. Afro-Cuban music has never been more vital, and this collection is a good place to start your explorations. --Derek Rath

    5 out of 5 stars Algo deferente(something different).......2007-04-23

The music is awesome on this disc and I was caught by surprise how the Cuban music has penetrated Africna culture so long ago. According to the booklet this has been going on since the 40's and 50's when Cuban records were first brought to Africa. The unique touches to Cuban son are magnificent. The addition of Cameroonian horns on the Portuguese- African band Tam-Tam 2000 is a perfect example of the merging of cultural elements for a unique brand of Cuban son. There is plenty of traditional Cuban son too to get your fill of the dance music that is hotter than a habanero but cooler than the shade of palm tree on a hot day at the beach. However, the real showcase of music on this disc is the unique hybrid created in Africa by musicians from Angola, Congo and other locations. Cuban music is alive and well all over the world . I find it particularly interesting that the music has gone full circle since the Cuban son has it's roots in African rhythms. This is a delightful disc that is perfect music to liven things up . Recommended for your next get together where you will have to clear out the furniture because people will be dancing. If you love Cuban music than this is for you. If you want to hear something different in the way of Cuban music than you will love this disc.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply awesome!!!!!!.......2007-04-09

I cannot stop listening to this CD. I have repeated some of the songs so many times that my kids have threatened to leave the house and come back when my addiction is over. As I am listening to the music, I am dancing at the same time. This CD puts me in an exuberant and joyful mood. I have recommended it to all my friends.

    5 out of 5 stars I Don't Know How They Do It.......2006-06-10

This CD is a masterpiece! It is absolutely amazing, and it has a lot of depth in it. A great piece to dance to or just to listen to if you would like to relax. You can hear the cuban beats as well as the african beats in here. just amazing..

5 out of 5 stars West Africa and Cuba join forces.......2005-11-28

This CD should have been named Afro-Cubano. The CD starts off with African salsa and son, and then switches back and forth between Cuban son and African son.
Then just when you think you figured the CD out Ruy Mingas's Kolonial throws you off with a very percussive afroportuguese dish. The rhythm here is strong and different from the clave influence heard in the rest of the CD.
One strange thing about this CD is that the Cuban selections are all traditional son, while the african cuts stand out as more progressive and elaborate, with incredible use of electric guitars.

    5 out of 5 stars Afro-Latino roots at it's best.......2005-07-22

Well folks this is where it started, the true roots of the Cuban Rhythms and the rest of the Caribbean sounds. Here you will see the close connection to what today it's known as "salsa"; on some songs you think you are listening to Spanish but in reality it's Portuguese Creole from Cape Verde. The rest of the songs are a mixture of African, Spanish, Peruvian, Cuban and Portuguese rhythms. My favorite songs are from Angola, Rudy Mingas " KOLONAL " and Ricardo Lemo & Makina Loca from the Congo "Mambo Yo Yo ", all the rest are good too. On this CD the African continent proves to the rest of the world that salsa originated from them and they can play it just as good!

5 out of 5 stars Unbelivable African singing in spanish!.......2002-05-21

This is one of the best c/d that i had bought.excellent sound, perfect rithm, and much more.Good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Fall for Pape Fall.......2002-04-01

No one plays Salsa like the Senegalese! This is a great introduction to one of the most joyous and infectious musical traditions in the world today. Put on your dancing shoes and be prepared to hear some Salsa Caliente done with subtlety, wit and panache. For those who haven't yet encountered the gravelly voice of the late wonderful sonero, Pape Seck, Number 1 of Number 1, fasten your seat belts. Pape Fall is almost as good with a killer band behind him and Super Cayor has super sabor. As compilations go, this one is as close to perfection as one is likely to get.

5 out of 5 stars African Salsa ........2000-01-15

African Salsa is so great you will hardly belive what you're hearing. The works by Pape Fall are amazing, Africando's "Yaye boy" stands around the best and the whole CD stands forward. A must for any lover of rythms.

5 out of 5 stars The best collection of Salsa from West Africa.......1999-08-17

This collection impossible to listen to without dancing along. The Senagalese approach to Cuban rhythems is really infectious and adds a charm of its own. A consistant high level goes through the entire CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Twist on the Latin Salsa Craze........1999-07-19

This CD can only be described as Fun! It combines the sexiness of salsa with the exotic rythem of the Sinagalese that has what could be termed a Carribean flair. This is a must for any party.

    3 out of 5 stars Consistent Quality..........2003-08-14

More good stuff from Africando. Temedi is the slammer on this CD and runs hard from start to finish. Several other good tracks as well, all backed by some of NY's finest musicians.

There's a crazy array of languages - 8 total for 11 tracks, including Spanish, Wolof, and Haitian Creole, to name a few. Makes for a unique salsa listening experience when you're used to understanding what's being said. With this Cd you better get the liner notes if you wanna know what they're singing about!

Not my favorite release from Africando, but unique, quality cuts with a great band, as always!
