Stay Away.......2006-01-05

While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!

The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.

Highland Pipes and Drums.......2007-03-09

This CD was wonderful, the music just captured you and each song had it own unique sound. My husband died in a fire and he always said he wanted bag pipe music played at this funeral. We used this CD and many people asked the name of the CD, they felt it made the funeral more meaningful. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes to listen to bagpipe music.

I picked this CD to write about because it's the #1 seller on Amazon for Bagpipes. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, people don't take this as what is going on in the Bagpipe & Drum world!!! This CD is ok for having many different Military Marches and that's about it!

Please listen to some of these bands to really experience the BEST of what this awesome music can bring: Shotts and Dykehead Caledonian Pipeband, Victoria Police Pipe Band, Strathclyde Police Pipe Band, 78th Frasiers, Boghall and Bathgate, and SFU.

Amazon actually sells some CD's from these bands. At least I know there is a Shotts CD.

This in not a definitive list, there are many other GREAT bands.

Lismor Recordings also has a series of the Actual Worlds best pipers and you can't get any better. Once you start listening to this stuff, you won't get anymore of these.. compellations.

If you want to practice with a good tempo and get examples of setting .. this is a good CD.

Not Bad, Not Great!.......2000-02-05

I love military and police pipe bands, and for the most part, this CD delivers the real thing. One unfortunate choice of music sounded like it was performed by "Alvin and the Highland Chipmunks", and has generated a lot of amusement in my office whenever it plays.

Best British Military Band Show EVER!!!.......2006-01-24

I saw the 1976 show in Baltimore & what an incredible night. What set this show apart was two full size Royal Marine Bands combined Plus the entire Black Watch Band + Pipes & Drums ( Black Watch Band has since been disbanded). What a sound as the band marched the last time during their encore they played "Dixie", the place went nuts. Every semi-annual British band show in the past 30 years has NEVER equaled this incredible show for size, sound quality & you could taste it excitement. This CD give a sense of what it was all about! By the center quick march!!!

A Recording to bring back memories.......2005-02-26

I was thirteen in 1976 when this record was made. My parents took me to the live performance of the Royal Marines and Black Watch and I will never forget it. They played in an arena along with the precision marching and drumming was the finest sound imaginable. I was inspired to play an instrument myself and have done so to this day (trombone). Patriotism was high in that bicentennial year and the crowd in attendance was greaty moved. We bought this recording at the concert in LP format and it has been played so much over the years that it scratches and skips, but it still takes me back to that day. I was thrilled to find it on Amazon. The sound quality is amazing and it would be difficult not to feel patriotic after hearing these selections.

Bicenntenial Salute.......1999-12-21

This is the tour recording originally issued in 1976 to mark the US tour of the band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines (Commandos) and the regimental band, pipes and drums of the 1st battalion the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) The recording reflects the music of the tour which was Britain's bicenntennial salute to the United States. Many of the tunes are popular selections long associated with the United States.

The recording starts with a rousing version of the "Stars and Stripes" by the massed bands of the Royal Marines and Black Watch. The combined resources of these bands are impressively shown here. The Royal Marines then follow with a Guibert and Sullivan medly, comprising well known selections from the operettas of the immortal composing pair. The Regimental band, accompanied by the pipes and drums of the Black Watch enter with the old scots air "Morag of Dunnvegan", which is followed by a bicenntennial "drummers' salute" by the drummers of the pipe band. The pipes and drums then perfom the first of two medlys on this recording. Many of the tunes performed in this selection are regimental tunes used by the different companies of the Black Watch at that time. The Black Watch pipes and drums are crisp in their performance, but one can hear that the band has come a long way sense 1976. The massed bands return with a moving rendition of Dvorak's "Going Home" movement from his New World symphony. The regimental band of the Black Watch give a stiring rendition of the classic Vienese "Radetsky March". Under the direction of Norman Rogerson the band was one of the best known regimental bands in the British army. Sadly, they are no more after the recent reductions in British army bands. This is followed by "Sunset", the evening retreat call of the British army which is accompanied by the massed bands. Pipe Major Allan Dippie of the Black Watch performs a moving solo of "Sleep Dearie Sleep". This was the tune played by six Black Watch pipers by special request at the burial of John F. Kennedy in 1963. This special occasion has made the Black watch a very popular item in the States since that time. A medly of Irving Berlin tunes follows by the massed bands. This is in keeping with the bicenntenial nature of the recording.

The regimental band of the Black Watch provide a wonderful version of the "River Kwai" march, made famous by the film many years before. This march is actually adopted from the British march king, Kenneth J. Alford's classic "Colonel Bogey" march of 1916. The regimental band continues with "All The Blue Bonnet's O'er the Border" the traditional quick march of the Black Watch. The band of the Royal Marines returns again with a typically bombastic French march, "Sambre et Muese" which features the bugles of the Royal Marines. There are few marches more French in origin than this one, it might actually be considered the "Star's and Stripes" of France. The Pipes and Drums of the Black Watch return with a stirring medly of scots tunes frequently played by the band at that time. The Royal marines return with their regimental quick march "A Life on the Ocean Wave", a tune that was written in New York during the last century and adopted by the Royal Marines some years later. The massed military bands combine for a World War One medly featuring many well known selections. The Royal Marines provide their last selection with the atmoshereic "Edinburgh Castle" which features their famous corps of drums. The recording concludes with a Brittanic salute by the massed bands including "Rule Brittania" and "Land of Hope and Glory"

This is a most enjoyable recording which the average listener should find appealing because of the many popular selections included therein. There are few more patriotic recordings out there like this one, and its bicenntenial siginificance makes it even more appealing. The performances are first-rate and the recording quality for 1976 is excellent. This is a timeless recording which Amricans should treasure, a fitting Bicenntenial salute from our oldest ally.

Brannan Lane has packed the entire Caribbean onto one small disc. From the bright,
bouncy opening track, "Welcome," to the sign off "Until Then," this CD will transport you
to an island getaway. What stands out about this project is the multitude of unique sounds
and instruments, from steel drums and pan flute to tropical birds, rain,
and waterfalls. Brannan creatively combines these sounds and instruments, enhancing a
varied selection of simple, pleasing melodies. Are you stressed out? Let the lilting rhythm
of the "Caribbean Sea" wash away those tension lines. Do you need a pick-me-up? The
percussive bonanza featured in "Fire Dance" will get you going on a positive note! Do you
need music to dream by? "Stars to the Sea" will take you to the ocean at night, as the
constellations pour themselves into the horizon. Have you visited the Caribbean before?
"Market Sq" will let you return, right back to the middle of a busy intersection with an

Brannan Lane's debut, CARIBBEAN DREAM, is a refreshing dose of fun and good cheer in a usually somber and dour musical genre. Using a vast array of electronic keyboards, Brannan has fashioned a sonic voyage to a tropical island, complete with steel drums and pan pipes. The music is relaxing even while it makes you want to get up and dance (which it does on some songs). The mood is bright, sunny, and full of life. In addition, the recording is very well-produced and performed. CARIBBEAN DREAM can stand toe-to-toe with many releases from major labels, and usually come out ahead. For sheer musical bravado and creativity, Brannan Lane has few equals this year. If you are looking for a good time, grab your checkbook or credit card and order this CD. You won't be disappointed!

Fun in the Sun !.......1999-06-22

Brannan Lane has created a wonderful, relaxing, CD. Amazing memories of the Barbados flood my mind whenever this CD is spinning. Sitting back, closing my eyes - I can picture the white sandy beach with the swaying palm trees - remembering all the "fun in the sun".

This CD is professionally done and captures your imagination of the Islands. It will bring back Caribbean memories and touch your soul if you have been to the islands - or it will create visions for you, if you haven't. But all in all - this CD gives you the Island feeling all around - and watch your feet - you will feel it tapping :)

WOW! What a CD!.......1999-06-08

Brannan has become one of my favorite artists. Caribbean Dream is such an uplifting experience, and makes me smile. I love all the detailed and intricate sounds, and am amazed how it all comes together into a wonderful compilation. It is hard to pick a favorite track, but here are some of my favorites: Market Sq., St. Tom Tom, Caribbean Sea, Rasta Pasta, Rain Forest, Distant Past, okay.....all of them! As you can tell I really like this CD! I think this is Brannan's only one, and I am anxious for another one to be released. Brad Chambers

The Gordons know how to relax you. Great listening pleasure with a light Native American touch. This particular CD spans their music career from there previous CD's plus 3 new ones.

20 Years of Sacred Musical Vision.......2002-12-27

What a gift ! I feel incredibly fortunate to have been given the gift of the Gordon's 20th anniversary compilation album Sacred Drum Visions from my wife for the holidays. It is trully an exceptional collection and likely my favorite of the all the Gordon's releases thus far, as it contains many of the best tracks from their incredible highly-acclaimed native music series including Sacred Earth Drums, Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine as well as 3 magnificent new tracks. The Gordon brothers music has really evolved in a number of unique ways over the years. And though their music stems from a native American influence it artfully combines sounds and instumentation from many indigenous cultures from around the world, making their sound trully universal; and this clearly shines through in this compilation. Perhaps the best thing about this particular release is the perfectly sequenced flow of each track into the next creating a sonic journey that reaches back in time and trancends the mundane world taking the listener on a journey of the Spirit and the Imagination. The 3 new tracks are really exceptional gems. I particularly like Faithkeeper Part I, which opens the CD and Light of the Canyon, the jewel within the center of these tracks. This CD is far more than a retrospective of the Gordon's amazing body of work, it is a powerful, transformative and healing musical journey of the heart. I highly recommend it.

Album Description

This limited edition release of the original soundtrack recording to Invasion of the Body Snatchers is its world-premiere on CD. The 1978 remake of the classic 1950s sci-fi shocker was directed by Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff / Quills) and starred Donald Sutherland and Leonard Nimoy.

Other cast included: Brooke Adams (The Dead Zone), Jeff Goldblum (The Fly / Independence Day) and Veronica Cartwright (Alien / Witches of Eastwick).

The original score was composed by Denny Zeitlin. Jazzy, innovative, experimental and unforgettable. This remains the only film score from the composer.

The booklet features extensive liner notes by film music journalist Paul Tonks, with reminiscences from the composer, while the album itself contains a 30 minute audio interview with Zeitlin.

INVASION of the FIlm Scoe buffs.......2004-11-20

I felt like I had been wishing for a CD release of this film score ever since I had first seen this film for the first time ever on DVD. The score is very 1970's cool. This may sound as if I find it "tacky" this is not the case. It is a chilling film score that gives this film a real heartbeat. Any film score buff should run to buy this cd not only for the score but the interviews also. They are very informative and entertaining. Denny Zeitlin's one and so far only film score is a triumph for films of this genre. This CD does not contain the Jerry Garcia banjo cues - Film buffs of this film know that the late Mr Garcia laid down a few cues that were used for the in film as a favor to the director. These are dubbed for the homeless banjo player within the film. This is a rare jewel in my film score CD collection. I highly recommend this CD. JackDVD@aol.com
