Sammy Davis JR truly was One of the Worlds Greatest all Around Artists to Emerge. this set hgihlights His takes on on 70's TV Themes&also Mr.Bojangles&Other Classics. his Voice is in cool form just as the Brother was.He truly was one of a Kind.

SAMMY SWINGS THE 70's!.......2002-07-22

Mister Entertainment, Mister Bojangles, The Candy Man, call him what you wish, but Sammy Davis Jr. was the epitome of cool, the consummate performer, no matter what the material. While fellow Rat Packers Frank and Dino were slowing down, Sammy saw the 70's and hit the ground running, singing everything he could. You'd think the break-neck pace would produce less than favorable results, case in point, the unlikely hit with this CD's opener, THE CANDY MAN. They literally had to rope Sammy to the chair in the studio to do it; but it became one of his all time greatest anthems. This CD is jammed with some of Sammy's lesser known sides, all of which are great. They go from the funky (BARRETA'S THEME, JOHN SHAFT, and the superfunkadelic GET IT ON)
to the groovy (more TV themes LOVE IS ALL AROUND, WE'LL MAKE IT THIS TIME (from Kojak), YOU CAN COUNT ON ME (Hawaii Five-o) and a homespun-folk art version of Jose Feliciano's CHICO AND THE MAN that is wonderful). Others still border on inspirational and let us in deeper to Sammy's world, like the San Remo Festival winner, THIS IS MY LIFE (a big hit for Shirley Bassey) and the touching TAKE MY HAND. The standouts here are the inspired message in I'M OVER 25 to the youth of the day (and it could still be said today), The grand take on the LEGRAND (as in Michel) song SWEET GINGERBREAD MAN that swings perfectly under Sammy's command, the poignant and dignified reading of the Bricusse/Newley song TOMORROW, a song culled from Sammy's THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT album (the only time Sammy and the immortal Nelson Riddle paired up) and a fine reading of the standard GET HAPPY, and finally, the final track, I'LL BEGIN AGAIN, flawlessly interpreted here by one of the greatest performers of all time. This is far from the "greatest hits" package(s) you'll find out there, but for another side of Sammy or complete-ists, this is a must have. Great import.

Horst at his best.......2002-08-08

After buying so many records of the Delgado orchestra in never heard some of these songs of this album.
Specially Music To Watch Girls By, wich is a very old populair
song here in Europe.
And been used by a national radio station in Nederland for many years.
So another speciality of Horst Wende is now in my collection.
Music like only one man good make, with one of his specialities the South America Music Style.

The name of the CD's "Pitts and Martino", not "M&P".......2003-08-30

Notwithstanding the carping about Martino's lack of prominence in previous posts, which is immaterial since Pitts is the featured artist here, this cd rocks. As she emphatically states in the liner notes, Trudy is not a Smith/McGriff/McDuff/etc. clone and as such avoids the endless cliches, tasty as they can be, which the former players often resort to. The only drawback is her singing, unless you're a fan of camp, in which case the vocals might actually be worth the purchase price alone. "Spanish Flea"....yeaaaaaah!

Not Enough Pat Martino !.......2002-05-22

As a hardcore fan of Martinos brilliant single note improvisation - I found this CD... a bit odd. Here, Pat is merely in a supportive role, (typically not a bad thing)behind some pretty weak arrangements. The percussion and the feel of the ensemble is somewhat cool - but, it really straddles the line between luke warm and boring.

In general, this CD sounds very hokey for something I would expect Pat to even participate in. Its a far,far cry from his recent CD, "Live At Yoshi's".

If you are looking for tons of Martino blowing, as he so masterfully does - it is NOT on this CD.

Sometimes you think Pat Martino and you think a trillion miles an hour trillion notes an hour solos, but then you hear him hooked up with Trudy Pitts and gazoom, he's groovin' and cookin' as well.

Philly bred a lot of heavy cooking post-bop Jazz organists... Groove Holmes, Don Patterson, Shirley Scott and later of course Joey D. among them... definitely there was something symbiotic going on between those two... and I guess old Trudy kept the young lion in line.

King of Cool revisited.......2002-09-05

It's always been a mystery to me why Lee Hazlewood is not recognized as one of the big songwriters of our times. His songs are full of pathos, lonesome cowboys & femme fatales and Lee got the voice to get away with it. This is the best compilation I've heard of him, it includes his own versions of the hits he wrote for Nancy Sinatra ("These Boots are made for walking"; "So Long Babe")as well as some rarer tracks from his 60's albums for MGM.
On "Summerwine" & "Sand" he duetts with here Suzy Jane Hokom, as opposed to the later versions he did with Nancy. My personal favourite would be the haunting coming-of-age ballad "My Autumn's Done Come". Sadly his masterpiece "Some Velvet Morning" is missing, but this is definitly a great introduction for people who are not yet familiar with this forgotten genius.

Great Introduction, Great for Learning French.......2004-02-15

I asked my husband to buy me some French pop CDs to help me brush up on my French. Out of the seven that he bought me (Serge, Edith, Francoise, etc.) this is the one that has not left my CD player in six weeks. It is so fun to listen to. I'm sure that her other CDs are great, too, but this is the one that I have. It is perfect to aid in learning French, since most of the subject matter is somewhat juvenile and simple. Also, the perfect pop stylings are infectious.

I have the 4-CD box of France Gall on the Phillips label (1963-68 or maybe 1969), and if my house caught fire, I'd grab it before leaving.

Having said that, you can do better for the money than this compilation. Good lord, there are enough others to choose from by now. It seems like they recycle these songs into a new package once a month. And some of my favorites are missing here: "N'écoute pas les idoles", "Nous ne sommes pas des anges". Well at least they omitted "Sacré Charlemagne", which is a big plus. I suppose the inclusion of several of her jazz numbers here is a lame atttempt to justify the AWFUL title of "Lounge Legends". Who comes up with this nonsense?
