American Eclectic at its Best.......2005-05-05

I saw Rinde years ago in New York, where he performed most of the music from this CD. I'm still trying to figure out what category his music falls into -- more accurately, it falls all over the place -- but it remains one of my favorite CD's.

Ranging from simple ballads to vocal poems to long jams featuring guitar genius Bill Frisell; Rinde's voice, spoken and sung, is able to match the extreme range of musical styles and influences -- classical, folk, straight country, early American, jazz, modernist -- it's always different and surprising, even after years of listening, but the constant theme of the lyrics is one of everday characters trying to find solace and understanding in a world which often defies both.

This is meaty, thoughtful music and words; dig into it!

Rinde Eckert - At Home in any Latitude.......2001-03-18

If you've never heard him, you're in for a real treat. If you've never seen him in action, try to catch his one man opera - RAVENSHEAD.

Introduced to Rinde Eckert through his performance work, I became captivated by the power and flexibility of his voice, which can soar and swoop, caress and scorn, and leave you wondering where it will take you next.

This CD offers a full eclectic course of Eckert's remarkable range and always surprising vocal arrangements, from the traditional lush and mournful folk rhythms of "I'll Never Go a Roving" to the droll hip hop rap "Crossing the Country", and the more avant-garde "Heaven in His Eyes".

In "One Those Mysteries", Rinde offers pure country, plaintiff and direct, and does it exceptionally well. "Sitting On Top of the World" is a good sample of the vocal and stylistic range Eckert employs in his performance work. "John Knows", sung in his perfect lyrical falsetto strikes one as simultaneously slightly humorous and sacred. But that's true Eckert - crafty, whimsical and heart wrenching all at once. Get to know him. You'll be hooked.

Eckert is an absolutely amazing performer. His music combines contemporary pop music arrangements with an operatic vocal style. Of his CDs this is probably his best.

Rinde Eckert is a complete performer, acting, singing, moving, who makes records. This is an exceptional one, impossible to describe in terms of comparison. There are elements of rock,jazz, country and contemporary composition in the music, and Eckert himself is absolutely riveting. He sings with a big, open-throated voice, great articulation and intonation and phrasing, a highly trained singer completely at home in multiple idioms. His a cappella "Amazing Grace" is compellingly strange, his falsetto unreal, and he is always powerfully expressive. A great and unique record.

Outstanding music and talent!

"Finding My Way" is a humble but very impressive collection of mostly original pieces by composer/keyboardist Vicki Logan. Most of the pieces are simple, but the heartfelt emotions and sincerity make this a very satisfying and enjoyable musical experience. Drawn to music from an early age, the opportunity for music lessons didn't present itself, so Logan is primarily self-taught, making her compositions even more impressive.

The album opens with "Dreams of the Past," a gentle piece with a simple melody that Logan embellishes with a variety of synth instruments and voices, bringing out the melancholy but hopeful mood of the piece - an excellent beginning! "Pegasus" is much more buoyant with an infectious rhythm and the feeling of "flying" down the beach on wonderful horse. On this track and several others, Logan is joined with other musicians rather than synth orchestration, and the fun of collaborating with other players is apparent. The title track is a lovely piece about part of life's journey - searching and learning from mistakes and looking for new things along the way. Logan is joined by Randy Gildersleeve on acoustic guitar, Andy LaCasse on bass guitar, and Peter O'Gorman on percussion - another very successful and moving piece. The two cover pieces on the album are "All the Way to Heaven" by Melissa Ethridge and "Only Time" by Enya. For me, these are the weakest tracks. They're nicely done, but Logan's original pieces come across much stronger. "Enchanted Winds" is a romantic piece with a beautiful flute part by Linda Wadsworth and some nice guitar work by Randy Gildersleeve. Dreamy and flowing, this is my favorite track.

Vicki Logan is a relatively new artist to keep your eyes and ears on. She says she is not trying to compete with major artists or to break new musical ground, but she may end up doing both in the course of "finding her way." Good stuff!
