En Vogue WERE Born To Sing!.......2005-04-03
En Vogue has a style that is sexy, brash and classy, not to mention their stellar vocal stylings which all four women mesh well together and never sound boring or competing. The women of En Vogue (Dawn, Cindy, Terri and Maxine) take turns sharing the spotlight on their 1990 debut and they all can hold their own.
With a little help from Club Noveau (spell?-they brought you the remake of the Bill Withers classic "Lean On Me" and were once called the Timex Social Club which had a hit called "Rumors") members Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, En Vogue captures the esscense of early 90's New Jack with their debut.
The hits were the street funky "Hold On" which features a nice little intro of the Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You" but seems out of place with the song itself. "Lies" was next with it's hip-hop New Jack piano and a female rapper named Debbie T. Then the harmonious "You Don't Have To Worry" and the drum machine drenched "Don't Go" summed up the biggest hits off the album and also the best songs off the album. The other tracks hold up well against the hits, such as the quirky and sharp "Strange" and the small interlude of the Andrews Sisters classic "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" which had a hip-hop flair to it and that I wished was longer. "Luv Lines" is another notable which features some great keyboard work and showcases some demanding singing from Dawn. And the bonus track "Waitin' On You" features some sultry vocals from Cindy and a wonderful sax by late great sax player Grover Washington Jr. and the glorious remake of "Just Can't Stay Away" holds well with the original. Still there are some duds like the eerie "Part Of Me" which isn't great at times and it can be sleep enducing but still En Vogue take turns at singing lead on this one and I give them props for that. Also "Time Goes On" is verry annoying after a couple of listens especially with the repetative "Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock" it practically drove me insane at first listen!
With some funny interludes ("Party" features the girls at a party being approached by some stupid guys, it's verry funny and it reminds me of some of the guys that approach me at parties-you do want to say "NOOO!"), harmonous vocals, toe-tapping music and a sense of style and class from these ladies you will fully enjoy "Born To Sing" if you buy it. I'm now planning on purchasing "Funky Divas" and more En Vogue albums (though sadly Dawn left and the group it was never the same). A very good solid debut that makes you want to stand up and applaud!

Where it all began.....pretty good!!.......2004-12-14
En Vogue was spawned by a couple of memebers from Culture Club, Denny Foster and Thomas McElroy. Who would've known what a group EV would turn out to be? En Vogue is the group that most artists then and now modeled themselves after and list as inspirations.
You can't go wrong with soulful voices that all fit the bill of being a true soloist. The voices blended together create harmony that is almost unheard of these days. Even in the faster songs you hear the harmony that we all loved. "Hold On" is the most recognized song that shot EV to super-stardom. It starts with a lovely and well-known acappella version of "Who's Lovin' You" from Jackson 5. Terry leads and the girls back her up well, and then Cindy throws down on the rest of the leads. Cindy also leads on the classic "You Don't Have To Worry", another hit for the girls. All of the girls share leads on the tight New Jack Swing song "Lies", which also has a cameo from a relatively unknown Debbie T (those of you with ears to the underground know her, mainstream America doesn't). The song flows effervescently. Also worth mentioning is the song "Luv Lines", in which Dawn belts out with the soul we all love.
If anything, a girl group must come hard with ballads or they will fall into obscurity; never the case with En Vogue. With such lovely-blended voices, how can you go wrong with ballads? Check out "Part of Me", my favorite song on the album. Each girls sings a lead and then harmonizes well, and the harmony soars throughout the song. This song isn't really a ballad as much as it is a socially themed song, but the girls reall shine on it. Definitely check out the song "Don't Go", in which Terry really shows off her vocal versatility. The girls throw down with this old-school type song. Speaking of old school, "Just Can't Stay Away" is one of the best remakes I have heard in a while. The girls' voices soar over Terry's leads, and this song is just a masterpiece!
We also are treated to a couple of interludes...one, a funny one in the beginning of the album, "Party" is just too much for me! lol. Also, at the end of "Strange", you get a funny interlude with Terry and Cindy talking about people. Also, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" is an updated version of the classic Andrews Sister song...just listen to Terry say "uh uh, not that version" and you will laugh like crazy. En Vogue is definitely known for their crazy interludes.
The one song I didn't care for on here was "Time Goes On". I just couldn't get into it, because it really grated on my nerves after trying to like it.
En Vogue epitomizes harmony in every sense of the word. When you think of En Vogue, you think, "man, them girls can sing!". What a perfect title for this album. A definite R&B collector's item!!

Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). And on top of that is a really special treat: the title song (borrowing an unforgettable classical melody) which blends Church's soaring vocals with the tender voice of young country prodigy Billy Gilman. --Sarah ChinCustomer Reviews:

The Very Best Female Country Singer. Miss Connie Smith........2006-08-13
Well I've only just discovered the very finest female voice in Country in the last six months. How she escaped me for all this time is a wonder. Well, good things do indeed come to those who wait. And Connie Smith certainly was well the wait. I first bought The Essential Connie Smith, and was knocked off my feet by this down home angel. After listening to the twenty songs off The Essential over and over. I knew I had to have more of Connie's music. And the Four CD Box Set Born To Sing most definitely fits the bill. Connie's voice is pure heaven. This is a real Country girl! What a voice. If you love Country music, especially Country of days gone by. You will love this terrific box set. I highly recommend it!
Connie's first nine albums, plus extra tracks.......2003-01-28
Of the nine albums whose tracks are included here, the first and third are available separately as a twofer. That twofer was released only a few months before this box. I've already reviewed that, and as I explained, those are Connie's two best albums from this period - but the others are also of a very high standard, but they contain plenty of covers. I enjoy listening to covers but not everybody gets the same pleasure as I do.
There are some gospel songs, including Wings of a dove, Farther along and When God dips his love in my heart. There are pop songs, including Downtown (Petula), Born a woman (Sandy Posey), The night has a thousand eyes (Bobby Vee) and It's now or never (Elvis). But mostly, there are country songs, many written by Bill Anderson and Dallas Frazier. Among the many country covers here are You ain't woman enough (Loretta Lynn), Ride ride ride (Lynn Anderson) and There goes my everything (Jack Greene, Engelbert Humperdinck and Elvis). Connie also covered Po' folks and I love you drops, both hits for Bill Anderson. Although Bill wrote songs that he allowed others to have hits with, he kept some for himself. Connie loved them so much that she recorded them anyway.
This is a well-presented set, as anybody familiar with Bear Family would expect. If you are already familiar with Connie's music, you will know what to expect. If not, I recommend that you start with The Essential, which I've also reviewed.

Country Legend Connie Smith's RCA Recordings.......2001-03-15
Connie Smith was a housewife with two children when she began her recording career under the patronage of singer/songwriter Bill Anderson. Her first single, "Once A Day," was a smash hit, and for the next three years she was one of Nashville's biggest female stars. Smith had a perfect voice for country music, with the tell-tale "sob" in her voice that made many of her songs almost heartbreakingly beautiful. Most tellingly, Smith was even more admired by her peers than her fans. She walked away from a successful career in the Seventies to raise her children and because she grew increasingly uncomfortable with the nature of the music business.
Connie Smith fans once had to search far and wide for her RCA recordings, but they have been more accessible in recent times. RCA released a solid one disc "best of" four years ago and her first two albums were reissued in their entirety in 2000. "Born To Sing" is a four CD box and contains everything she recorded for the label. Its a wonderful package, with first-class sound, and which includes Bear Family's usual comprehensive booklet. Although there is a lot of terrific music here, this boxed set is probably best for Smith's hardcore fans; casual fans should probably stick to the single disc compilation. Still, this is a superior package. Its nice to have all of Connie's RCA classics and rarties available, and to see her receive the recognition she deserves.
Incidentally, Connie Smith is still going strong as of this writing (March 2001). She performs regularly at the Grand Ole Opry, and she recorded a fine CD for Warner Brothers in 1998, produced by her current husband, Marty Stuart

No one has recorded more innovative Christmas anthologies than Andrew Parrott--and this disc is no exception. The Promise of Ages presents a collection of wonderful seasonal music arranged for women's voices (all arrangements were either made or sanctioned by the composers). The selection includes 15th-century English works such as "There is no rose of swych vertu"; traditional tunes both genuine ("Deck the Halls" in an 18th-century Welsh arrangement for harp) and fake (J. J. Niles's "I Wonder as I Wander" and "Lullay, thou little tiny child"); rollicking Irish dance tunes; and 20th-century works by such composers as Britten, Holst, and Judith Weir on traditional Christmas texts. One ingenious and effective suite combines Peter Maxwell Davies's "O magnum mysterium" and "The Fader of Heven" with the 14th-century "Song of the Nuns of Chester." All of the performances are exemplary, but Emily van Evera deserves special praise for her beautifully simple rendition of the Niles tunes. This collection can stand alongside Parrott's The Carol Album as the thinking person's Christmas albums. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
Superb Choral Christmas Music.......2007-01-20
This is a superb collection of traditional music from the past, some of it familiar, some not so well known, all performed so very well.

heart stirring. A great way to get into the Christmas
spirit and lift your heart.
Beautiful Harmonies and Vocalizations.......2000-12-13
If you love beautiful vocalizations, especially rare soprano-alto harmonizations, this is the album for you.
A "top ten" Christmas album.......2000-11-13
The album ranges from the 13th century Nuns of Chester to contemporary composers - Judith Weir - or nearly comtemporary - Britten, Holst ... with excellent sequencing so that no piece seems out of place.
The instrumentation varies from the traditional organ with SATB choir to fiddle, flute, concertina and cello. This provides the variety that makes the album so listenable.
For traditional Christmas music this album is a must.

Pure beauty.......2002-06-10
Her voice is a mountain stream: pure, clear, endlessly enticing, infintitely intriguing.
For this very reason, she is not cut out to sing rough sailors' songs. A L Lloyd sings "Fare you Well, Lovely Nancy" with rude tenderness that is quite moving. Custer LaRue's version is a scold, imposing current values on hapless sailing men. A pity, because she is a wonderful singer, America's best. But she really blows this song.
One song only though. Everything else is pure gold. I have enjoyed this CD for a couple years now, and it gets better with every listening. Treat yourself.
Pure magic.......2002-02-27
Not just for babies, though, The Daemon lover is magic for adults as well. Ms. LaRue's voice is pure sunlight, and I strongly disagree with the reviewer who said the recording is feeble. As a matter of fact, I used it as a reference recording when purchasing a new amplifier several years ago. The soundstage is broad and the vocals are clear as glass. Highly recommended for audiophiles.
