Boozoo Chavis

Editorial Reviews

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
The zydeco giant, now in his sixties, and his swamp syncopators don't take a shine to the New Orleans recording studio hired out by the major record company from faraway climes. They strain a bit, apparently cautious of the pressure to stay in tune and otherwise measure up to musical standards not enforced out Mamou way. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

5 out of 5 stars zydeco bands are best experienced live........2006-01-13

zydeco bands are best experienced live.
well they are REALLY best if you are there and dancing.
you can certainly dance to this.
oh my god.
boozoo and the boys were on fire.
it was actually part of a 'zydeco showdown' between boozoo
and his real life friend beau jocque.
[beau's side was also released as 'give him cornbread - live'.
boo and beau are both gone now, sadly...]
anyway, boozoo was stomping, the band was burning, this
is simply a great dance record, a great summary
of modern old-fashioned zydeco.
[this is largely NOT blues based, it;s based on
older, french tune, influences from the past]
anyway, essential boozoo.

5 out of 5 stars This Music Gets Me Through the Day.......2001-05-08

Boozoo's music is really lively and keeps me going through the day. This CD is for people who REALLY like all types of music. There's a little bit of everything here: James Brown, Tina Turner, Miles Davis, Charley Pride, with a bit of gospel and reggae. I like all of the songs on the CD, but my favorites are: "Johnnie Billy Goat," "Grand Mary's Two Step" and "Tee Black."

4 out of 5 stars He's a baaaaaad man.......2005-11-06

I've always heard about his x-rated records that they used to sell from underneath the counter at the record stores. Now I get to hear them. I'm not sure anyone but Boozoo could have pulled it off. Kinda raw, but in fun. After hearing the sanitized versions for so many years, its sort of like "hey, he can't say that on a cd". Maybe I need to get out more.

Boozoo's timing is ephemeral. Lots of stories about people having a hard time following him when playing with him. It shows more so in this particular cd than others I have by him, but, he makes it work, and he always does.

I'm not sure anyone but Boozoo could pull it off.

5 out of 5 stars Light the BBQ pit, Move the furniture and have at it!.......2000-07-12

If you are looking for the kind of CD that has you "car dancing" like an idiot, this is the one to buy. This is one of the best examples of button accordian around, by one of the two most influental men in Zydeco (clifton Chernier being the other. From the opening song, "Dance All Night," your body starts to move on it's own-there is no need to look for the beat. All the way through, Boozo's hard edge voice drives to your very soul, and makes you want to howl right along with him. Be sure to send the kids away, then turn the volume all the way up for the X-rated songs "Uncle Bud" and "Deacon Jones," both long time Bar favorites by the master and now availible for home use. This disk will get the party jumpin' and the Spirits flying. By far, thisis the one disk I pull out for every party.

Boozoo Chavis is one of the originators of zydeco, that spicy blend of blues, Cajun, and Creole music. He made his first records in the 1950s, but after failing to make a living playing music, he quit to become a successful horse trainer. He was coaxed back into the music business in the mid-'80s and became one of the most popular zydeco artists in Louisiana. Johnnie Billy Goat, a 22-song collection taken from the three albums Chavis recorded for Rounder Records in the early '90s, is an excellent introduction to his earthy but compelling brand of accordion music. Chavis has an eccentric way of accenting the beat, a peculiar sense of pitch, and a disconcerting way of switching from French to English. But on songs like the rare Creole waltz "Valse de Derniere Fois," the raucous warning song "Lula Lula Don't You Go to Bingo," and "Paper in My Shoe," a live recording of his 1955 hit, his idiosyncrasies fuse into a gloriously cohesive sound. The music of Boozoo Chavis may be quirky, but the joy he brings to his playing gives it a charm that transcends its eccentricity. --Michael Simmons

This is Louisiana Zydeco music. Not as good as hearing it live (impossible now that Boozoo is playin' with the saints), but it will do. All life and liberty and joie de vive, this is truly what the Cajun/Creole Zydeco is supposed to be.

As the man who originally fused Creole-Cajun music and R&B into a new form of music, Clifton Chenier deserved the title "King of Zydeco." When Chenier died in 1987, Rockin' Dopsie assumed the crown, and when Dopsie died in 1993, the question was, who would next take the throne? Boozoo, That's Who! is the answer, as this Lake Charles, Louisiana, veteran boils down the zydeco sound to a hypnotic accordion riff, a sing-along chant, and a stomping two-step beat. --Geoffrey Himes

    this is a good cd.
    zydeco is best live.
    both bands are hot.
boozoo at the peak of his early modern career,
when he was largely unknown outside SW LA, but a major
    deity 'back home'.
nathan was just 'coming up' as they say down there,
    he had something to prove.
boozoo just had to show he had it as usual.
both bands are very good on this.
boozoo especially was very energetic on this recording.
    get it.
    it;s essential zydeco history.
there is another double record like this featuring
willis prudhomme and john delafose, get that one too,
they are a 2 volume set really.
boozoo and john are both gone now, sadly.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best place to start exploring zydeco.......2003-05-15

Like many regional folk music genres, zydeco's energy and charm can get lost in formal studio sessions. And even the best performers are prone to repetition--no problem when you're at a live, rump-shaking dance marathon, but an issue when you're listening in your car or living room. This CD solves both of those problems: it's a live recording split between two zydeco masters with distinct styles. The elder (and now late) Chavis is muscular, growly and rough; while younger Nathan delivers a faster, flashier zydeco, featuring Nathan's strange, sweet, nasally voice. The live recording puts you right in the middle of the Richard Club--you'll feel like you're sucking down a longneck and sweating on a hot Louisiana night.
Later in the '90s, the upstart Beau Jocque would give zydeco a strong stylistic kick in the pants, sparking a rap-style war with Chavis, and CDs from that period are worth checking out. But if you're new to zydeco, you should probably start here.
