Composer Gaby Kerpel, of the aerial performance art/interactive theater troop De La Guarda, makes his solo debut with Carnabailito. Kerpel studied music during his youth in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but like his theatrical collaborators, he has tossed out the rule book of convention. Instead, he creates odd musical pastiches similar to iconoclasts Manu Chao or Howie B, radically reworking traditional and modern sounds and styles using a computer. Making this methodology his own, Kerpel also fuses traditional folk instruments and melodies from Northeastern Argentina. The results are simultaneous ancient and modern, but even with all the mixing and matching, there is nothing ambiguous about the music: comic opener "Se Que No Vas A Volver" is quite silly, the stumbling "Xpicamelo" is unadulteratedly weird Latin pop, and the child-like voices and haunting sounds of "Gabytok" are downright creepy. There's a sense of adventure here where anything is possible and often achieved, making Kerpel's musical vision far from typical. --Tad Hendrickson
