A Surprise from Transylvania.......2000-06-30

Nimbus Records are rumored to headquarter in the stones of an ancient castle: our curiosity leads us to wonder whether those historic blocks and their inhabitants are related in some most unnatural way to the Transylvanian treasures on this disc.

We have Nicolae Bretan-the Transylvanian composer of heart-rendingly beautiful melodies; the lyrics of the Old World's most soulful-Goga, Ady, Eminescu, Cosbuc, Eftimiu, Rilke; the superb singing and playing of Transylvania's baritone Ludovic Konya and pianist Ferdinand Weiss.

The cover and tray card tell us about the baritone and pianist, but the real surprise is within: once one looses the nails from the shrink-wrapped jewel-case/coffin, and crow-bars out the gothic-proportioned booklet from its crypt, one discovers that Nimbus have kept another pianist-Martin Berkofsky-prisoner in its dungeon.

Perhaps this Berkofsky is not allowed into the daylight, or worse, perhaps Nimbus have already dosed him with the requisite stake in the heart. Neverthess be Berkofsky one of the living or one of the living dead, his partnership (eight of the 22 tracks on this disc,) with Konya reaches those rare and sublime heights of truth to the composer.

Nimbus' crypt yields no biographical information of any of the performers and we wonder if they all are cursed to perpetual darkness.

Or perhaps this is all a clever advertising ploy like the soft-drinks' purveyors "open to see if you have won a prize." We have opened and we have definitely won a grand prize.

The best Bel Canto CD.......2006-12-17

The songs are generally like a more passionate early Depeche Mode (A Broken Frame), in that the music is fairly primitive minimalist electro pop. However, Bel Canto has a more "world music" flair, more seriousness, and better lyrics. The vocalist is very good, and the music is just right.

lovely music.......2006-02-23

Many years ago I listed to this music at a coffe shop in Monterrey, Mexico. Had no clue who they were. Years passed until I came across this lovely looking collage in the front of the CD box, SURPRISE!!! I immediately recognized CONTINNUM. The etheral languid voice of the vocalist gripped my senses again. Her Spanish accent in the song are so pronounced it makes it a beatiful song to hear over and over again. The rest the CD is jsut as compelling. A work of art? To me? YES.

Got me through..........2004-06-02

The year was 1990. I had a bit of a "dark" period in my sophomore year in college. Not as in "evil" but more of a "blue" period, such as Van Gogh. I call it a mixture of home sickness and lonelines. So I went out to find some music that had a mood to it and that I could relate to in terms of where I was at the time. I listen to everything from rock to bluegrass to techno to classical. I saw this album mixed among the racks at a music store near campus and tried it out. After just the first 30 seconds of the first 3 songs I dove in and bought it. The track "Continuum" is my favorite. The rest of the songs take you in a wide array of emotions. One makes me think of love. Another, pain and misery. Another song is hopeful, as if looking for treasure. And one even makes me happy and want to dance. Some will haunt you, causing you to be silent, reflective, temperate. This album did not age with me. It still is in the front of my CD holder among my most listened to. It carried me then. It brings memories to me now. It takes me back to times of change. It carries me forward to the change of the future. With it, I dream. I escape into another place, and forget my troubles in a world apart. Begin your own dreams... This album will take you to them...

Haunting melodies, poetic lyrics, incredible vocals. Bel Canto is the best "unknown group" you will ever find.

Primitive world pop????.......2003-10-13

Bel Canto is a native Norwegian group that's hard to categorize, and that's an understatement. I could easily praise this band with every honorable word in the dictionary but you'd still be left feeling clueless because they've got such a unique sound that's entirely their own. At times you'll think the lyrics are made up of their own creative tongue set to the passion of the moment, kind of like Dead Can Dance and Ekova's strangely affective method, but they're mostly sung in English or other foreign languages. The music in itself leaves so much open to the imagination and the vocals of Anneli Drecker never cease to amaze me. She's got a spellbinding voice that fits in with the dreamy, haunting, whimsical sounds that Nils Johansen concocts perfectly. The musicianship is impeccable and every cord strung oozes magic and mystery. I just love how they use such a varied assortment of instruments, especially their trademark bouzouki, mandolin and trumpet. This group has definitely evolved through the years, always good at what they're doing, but 'Birds Of Passage', their second and last release with founding member Geir Jenssen, proves to be my favorite - just behind their masterful 'Shimmering Warm and Bright', of course. I haven't heard their most recent 'Dorothy's Victory' yet but I'm hoping to buy that with Anneli's solo album, 'Tundra', later this year because I'm nutso over Bel Canto and wanna acquire everything brought out by them!

Album Description

Birds Of Passage is a wonderful release. A huge assortment of acoustic and wind instruments were brought in to support the computer synthesis of Nils and vocal incantations of Anneli. Geir is back with some of the keyboards and programming again and many others join the trio in the studio to bring instruments like the flugelhorn, viola, cello, clarinet and more. Live drums were even used. But though all of these instruments and a half dozen more people than W-O C are included here, the sound is still wonderfully arranged while deliciously complicated. It is here that you begin to notice BC's use of more standard instruments and sounds to complement the programmed synthesizer melodies. 11 tracks. Warner. 2005.

Smooth as silk.......2002-08-15

This is one of my favorite CDs. It is rare in that you can let it play all day long and simply just enjoy it either in the back or the foreground of your day. It is layered enough to really get into, but it is just as wonderful to read the Sunday paper by while sipping coffee. It is a hard balance to strike, but Sadao does a very good job of it.

Too often artists go too lite to be really enjoyed as jazz or they get too esoteric and artsy for anyone other than the artist to enjoy., but Birds of Passage strike that balance nicely

Dissapointment.......2006-09-13

I know that there is percussion music that is worth listening to, I've played some. Unfortunately, such music is not found on this CD. The songs are either ragtime (which is fine in appropriate amounts) or wierdo garbage that must be more interesting to play than it is to listen to, otherwise I can't see how it would make it onto a "best of" CD. I don't recall hearing a piece that had both drums and keyboards at the same time. I admit, however, that I haven't built up the courage to listen to the disk again to verify this. In long... the song selection is really bad and most of the sounds coming from the speakers are best kept in the background of B grade horror films. The talent of the players is wasted on the material.
