This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. --Rick MitchellCustomer Reviews:

American audiences will embrace Henri Salvador like he's a Grandpa Moses of bossa nova. It's not every day that an eightysomething crooner steps out of U.S. obscurity with an album of warm-as-fresh-pastry cabaret music. Of course, Salvador is no Henri-come-lately. He's famous in France and francophone former colonies (like his native Cayenne, French Guiana) and has decades of television and recording work to his credit. Now, it's time for stateside listeners to play catch-up. This album was reportedly recorded on the verge of Salvador's retirement, and though the sound is classique, many of the songs are of recent vintage. Salvador's charming, half-spoken vocals will resound with listeners familiar with the suave stylings of cabaret practitioners such as Charles Trenet and Walter Hyatt. There's also a bit of Danny Kaye in his phrasing on the album's lighter fare, like the brass-band-flavored "Mademoiselle"--no surprise given Salvador's extensive comedic résumé. Younger audiences primed by the ironic, sophisticated grooves of Dimitiri from Paris and Money Mark will delight in much of the instrumentation here. The album is, in fact, a triumph of production and arranging. Full orchestras are cued, at times, at the same volume as a single instrument, reduced to the level of pure atmosphere. One track, "Il fait Dimanche," has a funky vamp that demands to be sampled for the contemporary dance floor. Another, "Faire des ronds dans l'eau," subsists on strummed guitar and a trap set, with the occasional gypsy-style, savory violin part added for spice. Throughout, Salvador presents himself as an astute, sympathetic performer. On "Je sais que tu sais" it's hard to tell where his whispered voice ends and the drummer's light brushes begin. Apparently, swingers--in the jazz sense of the word--get better with age. --Marc WeidenbaumCustomer Reviews:

A surprising but amazing contribution from Salvador.......2004-02-15
I know there are Salvador stalwarts out there who will protest my characterization of Henri as being generally just OK, and I agree he released several standout songs throughout his long career. But those standouts are watered down by so many recordings that are "just a bit too." Just a bit too sentimental. Just a bit too comical. Or just a bit too out-of-genre for Henri to carry. Salvador's early background in cabaret, his affection for a variety of musical styles, and his associations with a wide range of musical greats (everyone from Django Reinhardt to Quincy Jones) have resulted in an impressive (and no doubt enjoyable) but flawed career.
With "Chambre Avec Vue," Salvador has taken the best of what he does well and has improved on it by performing with more wisdom than whimsy, more expertise than experimentation, and more authentic sentiment than unselfconscious sappiness. I agree with another reviewer that the influence of Benjamin Biolay (who has been associated with a few really great albums lately) cannot be underestimated on this album. But regardless of who you think deserves the credit, this is truly an album for those who like nuanced, toasted jazz vocals. Yes, it's all in French, and the album is packed with more international influences (notably bossa nova) than the average jazz vocal album. But on "Chambre Avec Vue," Salvador sounds as relaxed as Bing Crosby, as seasoned as recent Tony Bennett, and as melancholy as Chet Baker. That adds up to a surprising and welcome addition to the Salvador oeuvre.

Reaching deep into its cavernous vaults, Verve has extracted a rich bountiful of moody and sentimental jazz, perfect for those long, expectant evenings or those equally long, rain-filled days. Nicely packaged with nostalgic, sepia-toned photographs on both the box and each individual CD, A Jazz Romance contains nearly 60 songs guaranteed to set a distinctly low- keyed mood, equal parts sultry and sad. The vast majority of the material is from bygone days of the '40s and '50s, with the more recent entries retaining that flavor. The four discs are entitled In Dreams, Ever, Believing, and Always. They're rather interchangeable, sharing many of the same artists and each having as many vocals as instrumentals, yet each does have some distinction from the others. In Dreams features the great saxophones of Johnny Hodges on "The Last Time I Saw Paris" and Ben Webster on "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." Ever has marvelous versions of "My Man" by Sarah Vaughn and "The Shadow of Your Smile" by Dexter Gordon. Believing contains a contemporaneous version of "Some Other Time" by guitarist Mark Whitfield and Diana Krall, along with an outstanding example of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's versatility on "Alfie." Always, perhaps the dreamiest of the lot, has Chet Baker on "Alone Together," Illinois Jacquet on "Star Dust," and Stan Getz doing "Thanks for the Memories." Concentrating exclusively on the romantic side of jazz, this compilation contains an abundance of subtle, emotional music offering great listening in addition to setting the all-important mood. --Wally ShoupCustomer Reviews:

This bargain-priced four-CD set presents itself as easy, event-based listening, with the CDs individually titled "Wining," "Dining," "Dancing," and "Romancing." A glimpse at the track list and personnel, however, immediately reveals that, much more than "easy listening," it's an extraordinary collection of jazz performances culled from the Verve archives and including material from the label's classic and recent periods, as well as from subsidiary labels. The selection has been made with remarkable thoughtfulness, pulling out tracks that may surprise even veteran listeners. John Coltrane plays "You're a Weaver of Dreams" with the Miles Davis rhythm section in a 1959 session. There's also Miles's 1958 rendition of "Round Midnight" with arranger Michel LeGrand. And there's a live Paris recording of "Whisper Not" by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Lee Morgan. When Al Hibbler sings "This Love of Mine," he's backed by the perfectly Ellingtonian horns of Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster.
"Dancing" picks up the tempo and swings with vigor, but the other volumes are almost textbooks on the art of ballad playing, with many of the greatest saxophonists, trumpeters, and vocalists represented, and a healthy sampling of pianists and guitarists as well. Sure, it functions as mood music, but there's none of the usual artificiality or manipulative effects. It's jazz, often of the highest order and filled with a spirit of timeless romance. --Stuart Broomer

Even when he was a full-time jazz cat, Quincy Jones always had an ear for the pop aesthetic. This 1962 record does contain a good bit of, how you say, queijo in its unsubtle arrangements, but it is for the most part an accessible, entertaining, and bubbly affair. And with musicians of the caliber of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Paul Gonsalves, Clark Terry, Jim Hall (who can't help but be tasteful), and Phil Woods all contributing ideas, a baseline quality is assured. Most significantly, Jones goes beyond the expected Jobim and Bonfa cuts to fit Lerner & Loewe and even Mingus into bossa nova's bright clothes. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

Sorry to say, this is a TERRIBLE album -- he was just trying to capitalize on a "thing" at the time..... disappointing. Period.
Most BossaNova is best when done by small groups -- BUT, if you insist on a big/larger bands, get Stan Getz's Big Band Bossa Nova CD. That's a terrific album. This flat-out STINKS (and I like most of Q's other work).
As a qualifier of sorts, I've been to Rio, am a former broadcaster and DO know music.

Why Granz deserves his own jazz club in Heaven.......2003-03-06
And what first-class music his people made! From the "Jazz at the Philharmonic" series to his long tenure with Verve (which he founded), Granz brought together the very, very best jazz musicians, under the best conditions, and let them play what moved them.
This collection is a fine, fine introduction to what Granz accomplished--and extraordinarily fun to hear.
If you're looking for a great intro to jazz, you could do worse than to start here. (For pedagogical purposes, Ken Burns' five-CD set, "The Story of America's Music," is more comprehensive, and it has much to commend it. Listening to that set, though, requires an interest in being educated, as much as an interest in listening to jazz--some of the discs are jarringly uneven in tone, mood, style, and sound quality.)
50 years of Jazz Bliss.......2001-01-23
Forgive me for such heresy!)
I write this review about halfway
through the stunning Ken Burns "Jazz" chronicle on PBS
(January 2001) - I felt compelled to get this set out for my
late-night listening, and am glad I did!
This 4-CD set contains
almost 5 hours of great jazz performances by the giants - Louis
Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz,
Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson... well, you can read the
list.
Sound quality is awesome, especially considering that some of
these recordings are over 50 years old. Verve obviously wanted this
to be a quality product, to commemmorate their golden anniversary.
And the performances - if you have NOT heard them before, you will be
alternately slack-jawed with amazement and grinnin' like a possum
eatin' a sweet potato!
Jazz aficionados will probably already have
most of this material - none of it is new or unissued, all of it is
classic jazz. If you're like me - you've had some exposure to jazz
and want to add some good stuff to your collection - you can't go
wrong with this set. If you get picked to be on Survivor Island, you
just might want to take it with you... I would!

"What A Diff'rence A Day Made . . . And The Diff'rence Is You".......2007-03-31
Louis Armstrong opens up with Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" and invites you for a "trip to the moon on gossamer wings." Sarah Vaughan presents her tantalizing vocals in "Lullaby of Birdland" and shows off her versatility in scat singing. Stan Getz performs a Bossa Nova staple "The Girl From Ipanema" with vocals from the husband-and-wife team of João and Astrud Gilberto.
Bill Evans contributes his delicate touch on the ivories as he plays "Here's That Rainy Day." Every tune that Mr. Evans plays becomes a beautiful masterpiece. Erroll Garner plays his signature composition "Misty" with an enchanting arrangement making it one of the best tracks. Count Basie wraps up this presentation with a beautiful tune that takes you back to the fifties, "April In Paris," a composition by Vernon Duke and Yip Harburg.
The First Lady of Song Ella Fitzgerald does a swinging Rodgers & Hart song, "Everything I've Got" while Dinah Washington sings another beautiful version of Maria Grover and Stanley Adams' "What A Diff'rence A Day Made" (the other fabulous version is found in Diana Ross' charming album, Blue).
"What a diff'rence a day made
Twenty-four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers
Where there used to be rain
My yesterday was blue, dear
Today, I'm a part of you, dear
My lonely nights are thru, dear
Since you said you were mine
What a diff'rence a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy
Since that moment of bliss
That thrilling kiss
It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a diff'rence a day made
And the diff'rence is . . . you."
With this CD, there is something wonderful to unfold if you're a fan of any of these jazz greats. If you're a fan of all of them, then so much the better. It's very rare to find an incredible collection such as this. It's a rare find . . . so check this out and enjoy!
Wholeheartedly recommended.
