Great Brazilian Guitarrist with an Orchestra in his mind.......2003-07-27
Three qualities distinguish Horta's work:
1 - He is a great guitarrist and he plays within a conception of a big orchestra. His guitar playing seems to float wonderfully upon a sea of strings. Wonderful and unique playing! This CD shows his extraordinary conception of Henry Manicini's "Moon River". I am a big fan of Mancini's and I tell you Mr. Horta is brilliant in his recreation of "Moon River".
2 - He is a sophisticated composer of intricate songs and a great melodist. "Durango Kid" and "Diana" are among his inspired compositions. Though sophisticated, his songs are beautifully melodious for new entrants.
3 - His guitar playing is a parameter for guitar instrumentalists in Brazil, notably those who are in their advanced playing.
4 - Sometimes, Mr. Horta decides to sing and his singing is not so good. I wouldn't mind about it.
This CD is a compilation of previously released material. I suggest you'd rather have all the originals. If this is to be your first album on Horta's work, I tell you it's an excellent bet.

Master's Dedication to a Master.......2003-07-27
When you abbreviate "Antonio" in Portuguese, you say "Toninho".
So Antonio Carlos Jobim and Toninho Horta are both "Antonios" and the similarity does not end with their name.
This Toninho Horta's tribute to Tom Jobim happens to make it clear how similar they are in their open mind and how different they are in their top quality wonderful results. Both are great composers and players with an orchestra's conception in their minds.
This is a must-have CD. The Brazilian master guitarrist, arranger and composer Toninho Horta pays his tribute to Tom Jobim.
I think it is always dangerous for an artist to use Jobim's material because it has been re-recorded over and over and over. However, this is not absolutely the case here. Toninho Horta simply re-creates all material. His creative fresh approaches are unique.
Toninho Horta sings his vocalises on all tracks and Brazilian singer Gal Costa sings on two tracks: "Chega de Saudade" (aka "No More Blues") and "From Ton to Tom", the Horta's composition dedicated to Tom Jobim.
All sung in Portuguese except for one track.

Brazilian Master on Guitar returns with a Master on Flute.......2006-04-09
Great deal! Finally, Toninho Horta and flutist Nicola Stilo decided to record their live work, fortunately in a studio.
Here you'll find Mr. Horta as usual with his guitar and sensitive vocalise driven by his arranger's mind that makes all the difference.
Nicola Stilo was a surpise to me: a new flutist in my collection with brilliant conception in the same level as Horta's.
Repertoire mix 5 standards, jazz or not, with 5 compositions of their own. Coltrane's 'Naima', beautiful Bill Evans' 'Very Early' and Duke Ellington's 'In A Sentimental Mood' are the jazz standards. Also you'll find three Horta's classics here - 'Meu Canario' (aka 'Canario Vizinho Azul'), 'Bons Amigos' and 'Vento' - all with fresh and new approaches.
Beautiful guitar and flute duet.
dreamy guitar & flute.......2005-10-05
The guitar of Toninho Horta is always a treat, but on this 2005 album it's made even better by some lyrically light flute work from Nicola Stilo! The set's got a dreamy quality that really gets at the gentler sound of Horta's work on guitar -- and a few tunes even feature his vocals, singing in a laidback way that has echoes of the earlier bossa era, but a more gently jazzy approach overall. Stilo plays a variety of flutes on the set, and titles include a great version of Coltrane's "Naima", plus "Very Early", "Vento", "My Ideal", "In A Sentimental Mood", "Meu Canario", "Bons Amigos", and "Illusion".

Carlinhos speaks the truth.......2004-08-18
I thought to write, ..I remember a 'DOWNBEAT" magazine review when the cd first was released.
The (American) reviewer of the CD 'warned" that Toninho's improvisational prowess was (and I parafrase only now) "not up to the standards of the "jazz guitar technique" .
Almost certain obvious he means the "Wes Montgomery and post- Wes" approach to jazz guitar, a style so often imitated/mimic-ed, that that reviewer probably should have REJOICED in Toninho's fresh and unique approach, not subtly downgrade it, which is my opinion of his words.
(Regards my previous observation, I wish include ALL the great jazz guitarists/ innovators and also their blatant imitators , my reference to evoke the memoria of Wes ,only for brevity sake to describe the very traditional jazz guitar approach , which, incidentally, I also love and respect.).
As if somehow, Toninho was a lesser luminary of jazz guitar conception. This review I read really bothered me, and I remembered it when I just read Carlos' great review!
CARALHO! , WHAT an absurdo! What an bizzarre comparison that US reviewer made! Apples are apples, Oranges are Oranges, TH did not set out to make another "traditional jazz guitar" recording, no.
Toninho Horta has developed his own individual conception both in single line and chordal approach to the instrument.
Especially chordally, where, as stated by Carlos interview, Toninho especially shines, offering incredible range in chord voicing and substitution, this makes him an influential inspiration in Brasil and regions beyond, hoepful US fans will take notice too!
He is also deeply "tainted" in the sounds of the "motherland" (Brasil) as he is with jazz, rock, and Pan-American musics. An indelible stain, hehehe!
(TH was a charter member of the famous "corner club" which included Milton and Lo Borges,TH has been an integral grear in the Brasilian musics machine that produces much of the BEST of the world's sounds!)
The CD offers the 'brasilianization' of US standards (As his lovely reworking of "Stella By Starlight", and "Pica Pau", an original should be included as one of the finest of Toninho's many original compositions.
As was Grant Green in US jazz guitar terms, Toninho is INSTANTLY recognizable as a soloist, and his melodic improvisations are from the heart, a flurry of "1/164th" notes not necessary for TH to "tell his story"
10000000000000 stars for one of the MANY incredible guitarists from Bra-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-sil-l-l-l-l-l !
saúde e paz pessoal..
Brilliant and Unconventional Trio with Horta's Conceptions!.......2003-07-27
Nothing less than brilliant and unique renditions of "My Funny Valentine", of George Shearing's "Lullaby of Birdland", and Waynne Shorter's "Footprints".
Toninho Horta comes from the State of Minas Gerais in Brazil, from the same place and the same group of composers and musicians which gave us Milton Nascimento. Some of the most notable songs recorded by Nascimento are Horta's compositions, featuring "Beijo Partido" in Nascimento's album "Minas".
Three qualities distinguish Horta's work:
1 - He is a great guitarrist and he plays within a conception of a big orchestra in his mind.
2 - He is a sophisticated composer of intricate songs and a great melodist. "Waltz for Mariana", "Minas Train", and "Pica Pau" are his inspired compositions in this CD. Though sophisticated, his songs are beautifully melodious to new entrants.
3 - His guitar playing is a parameter for guitar instrumentalists in Brazil, notably those who are in their advanced playing.
Just like Tom Jobim, sometimes, Mr. Horta decides to sing on a few tracks of his albums and his singing is not so good though the songs and lyrics are always highly inspirated. I wouldn't mind about his bad singing. In this CD, he sings "Stella by Starlight", Milton Nascimento's "Tarde", the title track, and Tom Jobim's "Once I Loved".
For those who love sophisticated Brazilian way of making music or Bossa Nova or those who simply love good music.

Great Brazilian Jazz by an American Icon.......2007-01-04
Here he sings in both English and Portuguese; even though his pronunciation of Potuguese leaves some to be desired; it's very good nevertheless.
One of two great features that made this album a hit, is the inclusion of several cuts that are standards in the Brazilian realm; compositions by Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Hermeto Pascoal, Toninho Horta, Antonio Carlos Jobim, etc.
And second, is this great list of guests that helped adding the original Brazilian Jazz flavor to the mix:
- Tom Lellis: Piano / Keyboards / Vocals
- Romero Lubambo: Acoustic Guitars
- Frank Colon: Percussions
- Kip Reed: Bass
- Jamey Haddad: Drums / Percussion
- Roseanna Vitro: Vocals
- etc.
- Master guitarist: Toninho Horta
Very recommendable for fans of Jazz and Brazilian Jazz.

Oh!!! What an Album / Que Disco!!!!!!!.......2005-08-25
This is a magnificent album by one of the best guitarists from Brazil; Toninho Horta. This album was recorded in a series of recordings Toninho did for Verve; and even though he's mentioned he's not exclusively a Jazz player, here he offers us a superb Brazilian Jazz masterpiece. Check it out, you'll love it so much, I'll guarantee you.
My favourite cuts are (Yarabela) which is already a classic of Brazilian Jazz, and (I'll Never Forget).

The Brazilian Master in Guitar with an Orchestra in His Mind.......2003-07-27
Three qualities distinguish Horta's work:
1 - He is a great guitarrist and he plays within a conception of a big orchestra. His guitar playing seems to float wonderfully upon a sea of strings. Wonderful and unique playing! Pay special attention to his composition "Gershwin", a Horta's guitar solo obviously inspired in George Gershwin's conceptions.
2 - He is a sophisticated composer of intricate songs and a great melodist. "Bycicle Ride" and "Liana" are among his inspired compositions in this CD.
This was a Horta's album recorded in 1989 for Verve Forecast. His inspiration on beautiful songs and sophisticated arrangements are all there. Also Pat Metheny plays the title song "Moonstone" in a guitar duo with Horta in this CD.
For those who love sophisticated Brazilian music or Bossa Nova in the Tom Jobim tradition or those who simply love good music.
I love this CD.......2001-07-28

One of the best Brazilian Jazz Albums Ever!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-01
Check out two renditions he plays from two countrymen of his:
1) Milton Nascimento's: From the Lonely Afternoons (A true melodic gem that only Milton knows how to write), and...
2) Juarez Moreira's: Diamantina. ooooffffffff!!!!!!!! Toninho has no comparison.
And if that was not sufficient, check out the best cut in the album (or so I think), the tribute to the great Brazilian trombonist Raulzinho; here, he's managed to form a superb nonet with:
Joyce on Vocals
Marcio Montarroyos on Trumpet
Hugo Fattorusso on Keyboards
Robertinho Silva on Drums
Toninho himself on Guitars
Jamil Joanes on Bass
Paulo Guimaraes on Flute
and
Ronaldo & Wanderley Silva on Percussions.
A masterpiece/collectible like few...... don't let it pass you by.
