Two years ago David Byrne's Luaka Bop label released Afro-Peruvian Classics: The Soul of Black Peru, a compilation album that shone a light on the overlooked music of the descendants of African slaves on South America's West Coast. Because Peru's black communities are smaller and less self-contained than those in, say, Brazil or Cuba, the African beats are more integrated with Spanish guitar and Andean melodies. The result is a music of rippling rhythms and lilting lyricism, and no one sings it more convincingly than Susana Baca, who led off the anthology. Now she has released her first U.S. album, Susana Baca. The 10 songs, all sung in Spanish with English translations in the CD booklet, are a mix of traditional Afro-Peruvian numbers and new compositions; there's even a Cesar Vallejo poem set to music. The newer songs reflect the literary ambitions and nuanced harmonies of Latin America's "nueva cancion" movement. On Simon Diaz's "Luna Llena," Andean panpipes set up Baca's dreamy musing, "I saw a dark heron struggling in a river; that's how your heart falls in love with mine." On Tite Curet Alonso's "Caras Lindas," the "cajon," the rhythm box, creates the push-and-pull beat that propels Baca's assertion that "My black people are a parade of molasses in bloom." No matter what the song, she sings with a seductive, smoky tone that camouflages her highly disciplined control of phrasing. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Worth listening to again and again.......2006-12-09

This album is a great representation of all that's right in Afro-Peruvian music: interesting rhythms unique to the genre combined with sensitive lyrics, delicate interpretation, and accompaniment that's not overpowering. I don't know if I'll ever get tired of listening to "Negra Presuntuosa", for example. Not only does this album demonstrate Susana Baca's incredible artistry, but its poetry transcends its Afro-Peruvian roots. I bought this album when I didn't understand all the Spanish and wasn't disappointed when I started understanding it later.

Any recording by the celebrated Afro-Peruvian diva Susana Baca is an event worth waiting for. But the importance of this record goes beyond music. It was recorded in New York City during the fateful week of September 11, 2001, before a live-in-the-studio audience. Backed by her Peruvian combo, Baca is joined by two special guests: organist/keyboardist John Medeski and jazz guitarist Marc Ribot from Los Cubanos Postizos. Under Craig Street's guitarcentric production, Baca's angelic and atmospheric vocals float on Afro-Andean cajon, quijada, and festejo percussion instruments and dance rhythms. Along with some black Peruvian songs, Baca and company Peruvianize Caetano Veloso's Brazilian tune "13 de Mayo," Bjork's Nordic pop ballad "Anchor Song," and "Afro Blue/Zum Zum," a melding of Mongo Santamaria's hit and a traditional Cuban classic. In light of the horrible events surrounding this session, Susana Baca's music emerges as a powerful healing force. --Eugene Holley Jr.

4 out of 5 stars For live Susana, buy this, the authorized version.......2004-12-28

Susana Baca's first live album, Living Spirit in English, was recorded in New York partly as a response to the attacks of September 11 and to the unauthorized release of one of her concerts, sold as Lamento Negro. It's a decidedly low-key, live album. Susana's voice sounds as good as ever. The music is mostly slow and sensual, but the energy level does come up for such danceable songs as "Caracumbe," "13 de mayo," and "Se me van los pies," which also appears on her self-titled album. There are traditional songs, and several covers, most notably the last two songs: "Los Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Song)" sung in French, and Björk's "Anchor Song," sung in Spanish.
I can't describe "Anchor Song" as a cover, because I'm not familiar with the original, but I think it's quite lovely and haunting. She writes in the liner notes about liking that minimal way of making music and feeling she could make it her own. And I definitely hear that in the song. It's pretty spare, there's a give and take between Susana's vocals and the instrumentals (I'm not sure what instruments I'm hearing: accordion? Cello? Or maybe keyboard?). There's a beauty in the simplicity of the sonic textures, the repeated sequence of falling notes at the beginning, which changes to rising notes after the vocals begin, has a subtly sensual quality. Like hips swaying in a long, loose skirt. It doesn't sound particularly Spanish or Latin, or particularly any other culture. The other instruments (guitar, etc) add some Latin hints.

3 out of 5 stars A good CD, but not her best.......2003-01-06

Maybe I am judging this one a bit harshly, but it certainly isn't the best Susana Baca CD. If you had to go with one, I'd rank ECO DE SOMBRAS well ahead of it, and her self-titled Luaka Bop release is superior too. While Susana Baca has a wonderful voice, and she is to be commended for all of her fabulous research to help bring Afro-Peruvian folklore back to life, this effort seems a bit repetative. On the entire ESPIRITU VIVO CD, the stays within a very narrow range of mellow 'lando' and 'festejo' songs (slow to mid tempo Afro-Peruvian ballads). Occasionally, the dabbles with jazz-type improvisations, but there just isn't the magic from ECO DE SOMBRAS here. That prior album had a magnificent all-star lineup which included John Medeski (of Medeski, Martin & Wood), guitarist Mark Ribot (who, in addition to his recent solo albums, has worked extensively with Tom Waits), bassist Greg Cohen (Tom Waits and John Zorn), and producer Craig Street (whose recent works include critically albums of Cassandra Wilson, Meshell Ndegeocello, and K.D. Lang). Together, they gave Baca's Afro-Peruvian sound a magnificent flair, a moody and eerie environment, combined with Baca's luminous voice, that produced a truly classic Afro-Peruvian CD. Here, I just felt a little dissappointed in what seemed like an album that is the equivalent of a concert in Cincinnati - simply running through the motions. Granted, Baca's motions are still wonderful, but this isn't her best effort.

5 out of 5 stars Susana's new dimension.......2002-08-13

I heard almost all these songs live in Peru before they were released. I was amazed with "Aparicion", an old peruvian creole vals, she didn't even need a guitar, just her voice, and it was magic. She is very good in this kind of melancolic song and also in black peruvian music, which is so rythmic that you can't stop moving your body (A good example is Afro-Blue/Zum Zum, my favorite).
Don't hesitate in buying this CD, it's one of Susana's best.
Medeski and Ribot gives this production a new dimension, its a different sound than former releases. But Susana is sticked to her roots.

4 out of 5 stars A Real Treasure.......2002-08-13

This Peruvian sparrow has won my heart with her jazz
interpretations of traditional songs. The bass player
steals the show. Even the box player is excellent.
Stimulating and soothing music will make you move.
The notes provide lyrics and translations.

5 out of 5 stars Not Enough of a Good Thing.......2002-07-23

This CD is so beautiful. The music and her voice is very soulful. I like what Ms. Baca has done to the Bjork's piece "Anchor Song". "Autumn Leaves" is exquisite. There are various influences in this CD but Susana Baca has made this her own. Because this CD was recorded during the week of 9/11, it takes on an extra poignancy that cannot be avoided. Go buy this CD at once. Open your hearts and listen.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Eco de Sombras, Peruvian diva Susana Baca's second album for the David Byrne-helmed Luaka Bop label, both lives up to the mystical implications of its title ("Echo of Shadows") and places her exquisite voice in the center of ancient-to-the-future acoustic grooves that make it an instant beyond-category classic. Watching her try to top this one will be a great pleasure for music fans! --Rickey Wright

Amazon.com

In her Spanish-language songs about love, heritage, and slavery days, Susana Baca elevates the nearly extinct Afro-Peruvian blues--its sambas, landos, and alcatraz rhythms--to high art. Like Bahia diva Virginia Rodrigues or Cape Verde morna singer Cesaria Evora, Baca is part of a new generation of international female vocalists who take an almost chamber-music approach to their respective styles. On this album, that means augmenting her usual band with such musical guests as keyboardist John Medeski (of Medeski Martin & Wood) and electric guitarist Marc Ribot (Los Cubanos Postizos), who add almost imperceptible instrumental shimmers to her band's understated yet undeniably robust (and often Cuban-flavored) grooves. Like the blues, Baca's resonant lamentations, sung in a voice reminiscent of antique bamboo, transcend sadness with deeper and subtler emotional flavors. --Richard Gehr

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but a little too much for me.......2006-12-09

Eco de Sombras is the natural continuation of what Susana Baca was trying to do with her self-named album. However, while this album is incredibly musical, I find the sometimes violent sensuality of this album harder to digest.

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop playing it.......2005-10-21

I discovered this CD accidentally and I haven't been able to stopy playing it. I carry around 1,500 songs on my iPod, but I've been playing this over and over again for the past 4-5 days. The music is so rich and poetic that every time I hear a song I seem to discover something new about it. I don't understand Spanish, but the phonetics of the words are so beautiful that they are songs all by themselves. I highly recommend this CD and can't wait to get her entire discography.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2003-06-24

This CD is the absolute best of Afro-Peruvian music. It is romantic, steamy, and bold. I can't wait for her to return to the states on tour.

5 out of 5 stars Shadows of the Sun.......2002-12-03

A lovely, simple, passionate album. Her voice is flawless. A rich instrument that breathes colors and maps into the song's journey. A world of feeling communicated through simplicity. Timeless.

Album Description

Revisiting experiences that have determined her fate has been Susana's passion since she was young, and it's what drives her work as a dedicated folk historian and remarkable interpreter of emotion. Her efforts to preserve and share her Afro-Peruvian heritage have resulted in three albums of soulful contemplation and celebration. Her newest release chronicles her exploration of oral traditions from Africa, Haiti, France, Ireland, and Italy, in addition to her native Peru. Simple arrangements combined with Susana's distinctive voice translate the essence of each song's sentiment of love and struggle.

Travessias proves once more that Susana Baca indeed has what David Byrne set out to accomplish by bringing "The Voice Of The World" to fans and listeners. If there is anything more necessary in our world today, I don't know where to find it right now; D.B. and Yale, my buds at Luaka Bop DO know !! Their stable of thouroughbred artists like Susana Baca, Jim White and The Plus 2's, prove it. They don't need me to describe their great skill at performances. I will, however extoll their virtues to the extreme whenever I'm asked for my humble opinions! Travessias by Susana Baca is about as representative of multiculturalism as one can get. She not only brings us "Black Peru" but songs that exemplify her genius for interpretation. Susana really ought to be exposed more and more in the U.S. entertainment scene and regularly. Like I told D.B. and Yale, as inane as the talk/variety cicuit goes, their stable of talent are too missed by we who adore them. Susana Baca's Travessias is the choice for MY recommendations for what to get for your music-lover!!
Brava! Brava! Mas y mas y mas, Estimadisima Susana!, Jim, Kassin + 2, Geggy Tah, Zap Mama and especially MUITO MAIS "O Mestre Tom Ze". I wish I could have you all over for a cafezinho bica and some goiabada and of course, lots of tunes ! Man-O-Man ! You people really gotta hear Susana Baca express her loveliness in several languages too, no less ! I expect no less from any Luaka Bop venture!!! ( ALSO-check out my Irish cousin's music from "Emer Kenny", you'll be impressed and proud of her as I was / am...). Muschos Besos Y Abrazos Susana, Yo Te Amo !

4 out of 5 stars Distinctive voyage........2006-11-14

Susana Baca came to international prominence doing her own thing and in so doing became synonymous with the Afro-Peruvian sound that is now recognised the world over.
"Travesias" sees her gently exploring other directions in music and indulging herself with some inspired collaborations.

With songs chosen from Italy, Spain, Brazil, Chile and Haiti to name a few, Susana Baca has nevertheless insisted on a personal connection with each and every song.
It is a cliché to say that lesser musicians 'borrow' songs but great ones 'steal' them, and that is what happens here.

"Merci bon dieu" illustrates this perfectly. The song is in fact originally from Haiti but sung by Susana Baca with her full tone, nimble pacing and taste for simple accompaniment, this could easily be from the Afro-Peruvian cannon she weaves around her.

Susana Baca is a self-confessed lefty and so it is to be expected that she is drawn ineluctably to the poetry of Pablo Neruda, from whose verse she creates the anthemic "Guillermina". The subject matter being the passing of time for a woman seems to have particular resonance for the singer.

And from the same country, Chile, Anti-fascist activist Violeta Parra's "Una copla me ha cantado" is chosen. It's a delicate song from a woman of great stength.

She makes something beautiful with the world's favourite politician Gilberto Gil on the gently funky "Estrela" -- a duet of exquisite longing and delicacy.

Landing back in Peru for the traditional Christmas tune "Palomita ingrata". An ancient song forever linked to the practice of slave owners showing off their human possessions, given a fresh poignancy by Baca's attentions.

Lastly, in case English speakers were feeling left out by this uncharacteristically internationalist mode from Susana Baca, there is a surprise cover of Damien Rice's "Volcano". Baca is drawn to the painful love described in the song and she has the perfect voice to amplify that. As a footnote, she heard the song on a compilation of songs a friend made for her, proving once again that home-taping and its modern versions are not killing music after all.

I hardly ever listen to this album, because in comparison to Susana Baca and Eco de Sombras I think it's not that interesting. It's nice, but just not as amazingly incredible as those two albums.

4 out of 5 stars varied, touching, what a singer!.......2006-07-08

Almost a 5. I also have the SUSANA BACA album. Esprito Vivo is a little rougher but still very broad and pleasurable. Some songs here are on her other CDs. In some cases I think the band is a minus, a little too Santana like, not that I don't appreciate Santana. In other cuts, it's just great such as in perfect Feulles Mortes and her classic folk Peruvian sounds. She must love to sing because she imparts much pleasure and style without strain. Great rhythm naturally and very beautiful and fun.

4 out of 5 stars A magnificent and bold cultural celebration.......2005-08-07

Traditional Afro-Peruvian rhythms, religious chants, tribal drumming and waltz time signatures team up with smoky jazz riffs for a magical musical combination. Baca's rich, pleading vocals evoke pain, longing and joy in the same breath, while intelligent, poetic lyrics shake your soul harder than the ritual percussive thumping. The biggest surprise on the album is Baca's remake of Bjork's "The Anchor Song," a haunting musical rebirth that sets sail on the coast of Iceland and anchors down in Peruvian tradition. Baca offers a tribute to Mongo Santamaira with "Afro-blue/zum zum" and covers Caetano Veloso's "13 de Mayo." A magnificent and bold cultural celebration with an Afro-Peruvian soul at its core.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome; her best work.......2003-02-02

This is, in my opinion, Susana Baca's best work, and one of my favorite recordings PERIOD. It is her best both compositionally and vocally, as well as the quality of the arrangements and the percussion section and the passion of the music. This recording has also quickly become a classic of afroperuvian music, with stunning traditional percussion backing up hauntingly beautiful melodies. You will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting, Simple.......2001-08-04

One of the best CDs I've bought in a long time. The grace and sophistication of Baca's voice are allowed to shine on this one. Many of her recordings have been marked by over-production or color-by-number arrangements that blunted the beauty of her voice. Not this one. Baca's voice is sexy, even more so because of the restraint she shows. Where most vocalists would cut loose with vocal aerobatics Baca teases you with simple and deliberate control. The band is clean, imaginitive and simple. Top quality arrangements don't allow the band to hide. Lesser musicians would have fallen flat. These guys offer shifts and solos that are so clean they cause you to grin.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful - blew me away.......2001-08-03

This CD exceeded my expectations in every way. Tried it on a whim and am not disappointed. If you enjoy music from South America, this is a must for your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Lo comercial de Susana Baca.......2003-02-26

This cd is a good start for anyone interested in Afro-Peruvian music.

5 out of 5 stars Susana Baca's roots.......2002-09-24

If you've got to know Susana's music from those albums produced by David Birne, you might consider that you've just listened to products prepared for the etno-jazz fans, albums that just exploits her beautiful voice and utilizes a lot of the most liked armonies by them (including the slow tempos and the silences). When I knew that one of her former albums was nominated for the Latin Grammy and not any of those from the Birne's age, I had a good feeling about it: "Lamento Negro" would've remained as a completely anonymous production unless the interest of a smart entrepeneur who bought the rights and remasterized the original recording (it was recorded for tape by totally unknown musicians!) and released it on CD. Because of that, you now can listen to genuine artists playing music with great joy an inspiration, mixing Susana's tender voice (cuter than today as it was recorded sixteen years ago), poetry, and afroperuvian tunes in a happy piece of true and sincere art.

Susana Baca has finally won the Latin Grammy for this album. I never thought this could be possible, but it was and it's fair. You'll agree, I'm sure.

5 out of 5 stars Congratulations Susana Baca and Pablo Neruda.......2002-09-22

As the director of TUMI Music, who released this album, I would like to congratulate Susana Baca for her stunning recording, and also the late Chilean Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda for his inspiration. I am, nevertheless saddened that Susana's manager has expressed concern about the legality of this project. This previously unreleased album was originally recorded by Susana exclusively for EGREM in Cuba, who then had the right to license it to whoever they chose to. I had spent many days researching the EGREM archives till I found this rare jewel of a recording. We then licensed it from EGREM to release the album worldwide.
TUMI Music is delighted that Latin Grammy has recognized the beauty of this album and its cultural importance, since Susana interprets the poetry of the some of the best writers of Latin America.

5 out of 5 stars DESERVING OF IT'S GRAMMY NOMINATION!!.......2002-09-17

Nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Best Latin Folk CD, this CD clearly shows Susana Baca's is worthy of consideration for the prestigious Latin Grammy 2002 Award. Susana has lived the life and emotions that is so evident in this brilliant recording! She clearly emotes that special quality that can only be lived and not learned, it is why she is one of my country's most precious artistic treasures. When the votes are counted on Wednesday September 18, Susana Baca will rightfully claim the Grammy that is so clearly hers! *Strongly Recommended at many levels!
