5 out of 5 stars Interesting trivia tidbit... .......2007-06-27

I don't know how many Metheny Group fans know this (it's obscure) but both Pat Metheny and Steve Rodby provided background vocals for the tune "Child Of Man". They supposedly added processing (reverb, chorus and such) to help "improve" it. Pat thinks his vocals really have no place in music but he knew how to use it as a tool in this situation.

Just thought the Metheny fans would find this interesting. :)

5 out of 5 stars Stylish contemporary Israeli music given the Metheny sound.......2001-08-09

For this album aimed at the US market, Israeli jazz/folk singer Achinoam Nini adopted the nickname Noa, which also became the title of the record. Although recorded quite early in her career, it is a very polished and competently executed album with excellent instrumental and vocal work, which is further enhanced by the classy production sound of Pat Metheny.

Guitar virtuoso Metheny stayed behind the mixing desk on this project, leaving all guitar duties to Noa's compatriot and collaborator, Gil Dor, whose dexterous acoustic guitar work provides a lively backing for Noa's agile voice. Throughout, the album is characterised by a typical Metheny Group 'ambient' sound, with ringing acoustic guitars, warm synthesizer orchestrations by Lyle Mays, and the string bass of Steve Rodby. The superb drum sound of Steve Ferrone gives a terrific lift to the opening track, but throughout most of the album little percussion is used.

Despite having lived in the US for much of her youth, Noa's English lyrics are of only moderate quality, but even so the songs in English come across well, being at times reminiscent of Joni Mitchell's early work. However, it is perhaps in the more exotic sound of the three Hebrew songs that Noa and Gil are at their most effective and original, with 'Uri' (a setting of a Hebrew poem) being particularly touching. Another unusual feature is the inclusion of the JS Bach composition 'Ave Maria' as the closing track, in which despite Noa's slightly clumsy English lyrics (which to classical purists would be a desecration of the Bach/Gounod original) the sentiments - a prayer for peace in her troubled homeland - are nevertheless profound.

This is a superb album of music which is refreshingly different, yet with an overall sound that is comfortingly familiar. I can't recommend it highly enough. Her other albums are a bit more idiosyncratic in style, but well worth hearing if you enjoy this one.

4 out of 5 stars Deserves to be much more widely appreciated.......2001-06-29

Guitarist Gil Dor, unknown to me until the release of this CD, must be one of the bravest musicians around. He plays guitar throughout this album, despite the fact that through the glass panel of the recording studio he would have been able to see guitar virtuoso Pat Metheny at the production desk.

This album caught the Pat Metheny Group during a creative peak, and although Pat plays no guitar whatsoever and Wertico is absent, the rest of the band is here (former drummer Dan Gottlieb even returns to play cymbals!) and the sound is very much PMG of around the 'Letter From Home' period.

Don't judge the album entirely by the opening track, which is outstanding and, as single, ought to have been a million-seller, in the same timeless inspirational vein as say, Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive'. The rest of the album doesn't always maintain the magnificent standard of that opening high point, but there is much to enjoy. Track #4, 'Path to Follow', is typical of the beauties that take a little more listening.

Pianist Lyle Mays does a particularly good job throughout this album, and it's surprising that he hasn't worked with Gil Dor on any of his own solo albums. Mays and Dor appeared to achieve a strong empathy here.

If you want a recommendation for another female vocalist who worked briefly with Pat Metheny, Silje's 'Tell Me Where You're Going' is in much the same vein, although slightly less Hebraic and slightly more Norwegian, as one might expect of a Nordic artist.

    4 out of 5 stars Hebrew Triumph.......2000-12-16

The great thing about this CD is not because its Israeli singer Noa's first English crossover album. Its because despite being laden with a string of English language tracks, it breaks new ground only on the native Hebrew songs, which is testament to the fact that people most often score higher while doing what they really know about.

Noa is brilliant, no doubt, and so much better that even her fellow Middle Eastern chanteuse Ofra Haza (who passed away in 2000 - she gave us one of the best albums of the 1980's in the form of 'Shaday'). Shes one of the few who use her voice as an instrument and not as a machine to belt out vocals. On this debut American CD (which by the way, almost went gold) she shows us why the Middle Eastern vocal technique works well within any musical medium.

This is most evident on her native Hebrew tracks, which form the best part of this record. The downside is that Noa's songwriting is really quite pathetic. Alongwith Gil Dor, shes crafted songs that seem more the work of a fifth-grader than a strong Eastern woman hoping to captivate the States solely based on talent (and a measure of good looks). This is typified on 'I don't know', the sets' opener, and arguably the most insipid of all tracks on this CD set. Other turkeys include the embarrasing 'Lady Night', which reeks of poor grammar and unbelievably silly imagery.

However, if you don't count those weak tracks, 'Noa' is a wonderful achievement. Her finest moments come on the blissfully happy 'Eye Opener', which is sung in Hebrew, and the tuneful 'Mishaela', which I consider the finest song on here. Theres also something called 'Uri', which sounded interesting to begin with, but Noa falters midway through this beautiful track and never quite regains composure.

Another marvel is 'Ave Maria', Noa's own take on the classic - only she twists it out of recognition and makes it all her own. Her vocals here are incomparable, though once again the lyrics do make you wonder if she had no lyrical advisors at all. It sounds like a hymn, but has lyrics like 'Things look pretty bad down here', in the most inappropriate context. Ah well, thats a small price to pay for the other goodies that Noa offer us.

'Noa' is often remembered by audiences as what launched her brilliant career. She still draws massive crowds at Israel and other Middle Eastern Countries, but has been largely forgotten in the US and UK. Pity, because here is a true vocal talent whom we all should have gotten to know better. This album, though from 1994 is timeless, and sounds good in the 2000s. Highly recommended for lovers of world music.

This is one of the most wonderful singers I have ever heard. Her CDs are so relaxing, but yet don't bore you to death like some of the others. I have personally sang with her during one of her tours. She came to our school and picked us to sing with her. If you ever have the chance, go see her in concert. She will be touring this year in the US and other countries. I love all of her CDs!

Taking songs from two Israeli albums "Achinoam" and "Achinoam Nini Gil Dor," Both Sides of the Sea showcases Noa's evocative singing and song-writing skills, born of her Israeli heritage and American residence. Working with longtime collaborator Gil Dor, she moves effortlessly from Middle Eastern-tinged songs to more western light jazz/pop fair with plenty of exotic instrumentation coloring compositions with great mainstream appeal. Noa's lyrics, and those of fellow writer Leah Goldberg, are modern poetic odes to love and the dichotomy of dual homelands. Behind the contemporary themes and production, Noa's senses are folk-rooted, making for a beguiling combination. --Derek Rath

    5 out of 5 stars I love this album........2004-12-06

This is one of my favorite albums. I can listen to it over and over again. There's plenty of variety on it, because Noa seems to be quite willing to try something new, even if it's different.

"Boker" is far and away my favorite song. I don't speak Hebrew, so I found the Hebrew lyrics online so I can sing along! (I actually wish she had the Hebrew lyrics of the songs included instead of translating them into English. It's nice to know what the songs are about, but some of the lyrics I haven't been able to find online, so I sound kind of funny trying to sing along to "Millimeter" ... oh well.) "Terminal" is pretty interesting, a spoken-word song.

I bought "Blue Touches Blue," and I have to say that I prefer "Sea" to "Blue." I feel like "Blue" doesn't have as much of the whimsey and interest that "Sea" does. My favorite track on "Blue" was the Yeminite song that she sang a capella. You could hear so much of the nuance of her voice, and the song is a beautiful one. Everything else seemed really American, sort of "You're singing in English, and everybody produces their songs to sound like this." "Sea" just sounds fresher and more interesting to me.

I really wish Noa would go out and storm the American market. Kick Celine Dion and Mariah Carey out of the way for a little while! We could use a little variety out here in this wasteland we call radio.

    5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2004-09-23

Superb album. There is a not a bad cut on it. Some are merely good, but most are great.

Noa does jazz, pop, and folk, with an Israeli flavor. Most of the lyrics are in Hebrew, with a few stray lines or words in English, but the music and singing are out of this world.

I particularly recommend Nisayon, Nocturno, and He, but each cut has something to recommend it.

    Simply great.

    5 out of 5 stars Noa - superb!.......2001-10-11

What a beautiful album! - From the opening words of Noa on the first song I was totally captivated by her voice! I have her first album and 'Noa: Calling', but 'Both Sides of the Sea' is different and fantastic. The Hebrew language in a sung form within such great tunes is a revelation. Stunned and in awe hardly does justice to how feel when listening to this album! Gil Dor is such a lucky man to be married to one so beautiful in both sight and sound! G-d bless Israel!

This is one of my favorite cd's and for good reason.Noa makes an outstanding preformance in this one.She doesn't just sing, she puts alot of energy into it so you can almost feel the music. The music itself would almost be a reason to buy this cd.It has a lively, energetic and upbeat feel. songs are in Hebrew except one which is in English. This cd has the must have song- HE (boi Kalla)

I love this CD.Noa's melodies and singing takes me someplace else when I listen to it.Especially when she sings in Hebrew.Although there are a few songs on this CD that are not new for me,I still enjoy listening. Her voice and music always sounds fresh and uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Calling All Rock Divas!.......2006-08-12

Even though I really enjoyed Noa's first album, Calling is the one I constantly come back to when I need to capture the fullness of life. The lyrics are vivid, the music is energizing and Noa's voice soars like a Bird of Paradise. Whenever I play it, I can't help but think of Calling as her official "rock album". If only Alanis and Shakira could infuse their music with as much spirituality and social awareness while delivering it with such artistry and depth.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful discovery.......2005-07-31

If you have never heard anything of Noa before, you'd better start with this one, rather than her self-titled American debut ("Noa", 1994). That is, if you prefer snappy and lively arranged vocal music to mushy and gloss jazz-pop. And despite all of Rupert Hine's clicks and pops, on this album they rarely ever get in the way of the sensitive compositions or the delicate voice of Noa.

The feel and touch of "Calling" comes in some part from the often sharp lyrics, which bear witness of things gone wrong. Titles such as "Too Proud" and (the beautiful) "Too Painful" let Noa speak out with an immediacy and directness. These qualities was found no-place on the preceding album ("Noa"), whose honey-coated production left the vocalist fighting to make it sound like anything but an uninspired thing out of the mainstream of ersatz-Streisand pop.

Not so here. The vocal beauty and power of "U.N.I" and the happy-feel of "Calling Home" are but two of the reasons why this album reminds me of the crystal-clear harmonies of Noa's second Israeli album, "Achinoam Nini Gil Dor" (1993). "Calling" makes up any lack of "israeli feel" with an even better crafted set of varied pop songs, accompanied with both vocal power and beauty. Noa's often dark humour added to many of the texts make this a real worth-while listen.

As does the production. Interestingly enough, Rupert Hine was also involved in Suzanne Vega's "Songs in Red and Gray", yet another sincere-sounding album (dealing with troubled relations) from a female vocalist hitting the right note. So I can only hope Noa/Nini will let Mr Hine once more be part of her productions.

5 out of 5 stars Lovin' Noa from a total non musical type.......2004-02-17

I bought this CD after I heard Noa singing on some music awards show several years ago with Stevie Wonder. It was such a beautiful duet but I never even heard them say her name. Needless to say, it took me some work to track down the artist's name but it was worth it. I don't consider myself a music afficianado (sp?) at all but I sure do enjoy this cd. I think all the songs are enjoyable and different and I love how some of the songs are upbeat and some are a little dark or sad. I don't get tired of listening to this cd at all and I've had it for probably three years. The only reason I'm writing this review is everyone that's been responding seems to really know their stuff and I thought someone might be interested to hear from someone who just enjoys Noa for the plain old reason of liking a beautiful voice with beautiful words!

    2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2003-04-18

I must agree with the reviewer below, but I would go even further: this recording is mostly dreadful. The songs are oddly without any real feeling or sense of musicality, often very dark, and unsatisfying. Her cover of Pat Metheny's "Letter from Home", adding words (and very odd ones at that) and drums is one of the strangest and most unpleasant covers I've ever heard. I really wonder what Pat thought of it.

Noa's self-titled first international release was superb, a blend of contemporary jazz, Israeli folk styles, and some pop that worked beautifully. The presence of Pat Metheny's production, with Lyle Mays' signature keyboard sounds and Steve Rodby on bass was just perfect.

Undoubtedly, she did not want to be seen as just a Metheny protege, hence the change to all new personel, but it is jarring. You wonder if this is even the same person, and not in a good way. There are maybe two songs on "Calling" that I can listen to repeatedly. Actually, I can't, because I sold my copy.

Fortunately, she rebounded somewhat with her next international release, "Blue touches blue", though I still prefer her first CD.

If you've never heard Noa before, please don't start with this recording. Buy her superb self-titled recording on Geffen instead.

3 out of 5 stars A somewhat disappointing follow-up to the excellent 'Noa'.......2001-08-06

After Israeli songstress Achinoam Nini's brilliant 'Noa' album, recorded with the Pat Metheny Group, 'Calling' is something of a disappointment. Many of its songs are lacking in melodic hooks and clear direction, and the lyrical subject matter is often bleak and pessimistic, and much less warm and positive than in the 'Noa' songs.

This stark contrast is accentuated by a change in production team, with the warm, ambient sounds of the Metheny group (especially Lyle Mays' keyboards) on 'Noa' being replaced by the hard, soulless synthesizers of Rupert Hine's production sound. This change in style from the previous album was probably deliberate, and perhaps specifically intended to reflect the mood of the songs, but to me it's much less appealing to listen to.

There are a few slightly memorable songs, perhaps most notably the first and last on the album, but in comparison with the classy content of 'Noa' real high points are hard to find on 'Calling'. However, all is not lost for Noa, as her later live album, recorded with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, is excellent. We must hope that more of her work could be made available outside of Israel.

5 out of 5 stars The wait is over--Noa's perfect blend.......2002-04-02

Part of Noa's song "the beauty of that" says "...i don't know what to say it's been so very long we've been waiting for this day.."Noa fans understand this sentiment and can finally say the wait is over. Noa has given us yet another beautifully crafted CD. For thos fans of her earlier work, the musical stylings of her latest, "Blue Touches Blue" is at times reminiscent of her first English album "Noa", and at times reminds one of "Calling". Yet, this CD is netiher, but rather a weaving together of Noa's musical personalities. She delivers ballads like "Haunted" and "Long Coat in Winter" with her beautiful voice side by side with the more pop-styles of "Can I reach you," "Home-made religion" and "The beauty of that". Of course, Israel is an important part of Noa's musical and personal vision, as we hear in "wrap it up with love", the brige to "beauty of that" and fully on "dala, dala" and "morning" (previously released on her last Hebrew album and "Both Sides of the Sea"). Hearing Noa sing the traditional Yemenite song "dala, dala" is a moving experience that translates the song's emotions of love, longing and fear even without the aid of liner notes in English. Lyrically, Noa has written or co-written all the songs which results in pieces that at times simply speak of love, joy and sadness at the state of the world (as in "Angel") and at times deliver rich metaphors of deep emotional awareness that create a colorful palette of visual images to accompany Noa's musical journey. The CD ends with a special bonus track-the title song from the acclaimed "life is beautiful" that leaves the listener with the message to "smile without a reason why" For Noa's fans -her CD alone is a very important reason to smile and to add it to our musical collections. I would also recommend a trip to her website to get a greater look at the early beginnings, musical vision and personal hopes of the artist herself.

    Album Description

This project became a first-time attempt to connect the story of Kamehameha's written musical history with a recording of the songs and sounds that are the essence of that story.

Na Mele Ho'oheno offers the listener the oppurtunity to experience traditional Kamehameha music intellectually, visually and through sound. It is a memorable jouney that you will not regret embarking upon.

4 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2003-02-02

    This music will haunt you.

I live on the mainland now but this music brought back wonderful memories of the islands of Hawai'i. The King Kamehameha schools are to be commended for their *outstanding* achievement in preserving and continuing the wonderful tradition of Hawaiian choral singing. The students sing beautifully. They sing with their whole heart.
    I definitely recommend this cd.

Hey! This is my school's CD!... WOOHOO Imua Kamehameha!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful mix of Hawaiian music.......2001-03-19

Great CD!I was looking for a CD that included a wide range of Hawaiian music. This is not the "Don Ho" tourist CD (if that is what you are looking for) but rather a CD that captures the beauty of the Hawaiian language and music.

    5 out of 5 stars Just fabulous.......2006-06-20

This CD was my introduction to this artist. Very characteristic voice, wrapped beautifully around the (mostly) Hebrew lyrics. Very eclectic arrangements. The whole CD is extremely seductive.
I also bought "blue on blue", which also is very accomplished although sung predominantly in English, and more heavily "produced". However, both show a very distinctive Israeli artist at the height of her career. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars This music will warm your heart.......2002-07-13

Noa and Gili's music combines classic music, jazz and Mediterranean motives in a very intelligent way. The result is a wonderful cultural mixture. Noa's voice is amazing. And all together this music will warm and open your heart.
