This album offers 12 enlightening cover versions of Western pop tunes, as performed by artists from places like France, Spain, South Africa, Germany, and Mali. It's always instructive to glimpse how one culture's music is perceived by another, whether through a funhouse mirror, from under a microscope, or even face-to-face. The performances gathered here range from misguided (Albert Pla's bizarre Spanish language take on Lou Reed's "Take A Walk On The Wild Side") to hilarious (Fatal Mambo's salsa interpretation of Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime") to a delightful breath of fresh air (Malian girl group Les Go's version of Hall & Oates' "I Can¹t Go For That"). Nenes' earnest Japanese-language rendition of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry" is laced with plangent plucked samisens and is somehow extremely touching. Other attempts are less effective, but at least none of them come across as cynical and all are worth a listen. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Great collection of covers.......2007-06-24
This is a must have for world music lovers, especially those who have American or British favorites they love to hear in new ways. This is one of my favorite world music CD's and probably the one I listen to the most.
Eye-opening! Definitely worth the money.......2007-01-31
This CD is unlike any other. One culture takes on another's idea of a popular hit, and reinterprets it through their own set of cultural lenses. The result is utterly fascinating. It is a fun listen...but also a study of people, of music, of psychology, of music, of intercultural interaction. Don't miss this one!
The Best of Both Worlds.......2006-11-14
I don't know, maybe it's just because I cut my teeth on world music three and a half years ago with this CD and Putumayo's "Global Soul", which came out at about the same time. I love both of them. "Cover the World" takes a very fresh look at some standards that you may already be familiar with.
As mentioned elsewhere, the two songs by Ladysmith Black Mambazo - "People Get Ready", with Phoebe Snow (originally done by The Impressions), and "Ain't No Sunshine" with Des'ree (originally by Bill Withers) - are alone worth the price of the CD. I played "People Get Ready" over and over when I first got the CD, and still haven't tired of it. Angelique Kidjo puts her own unique spin on the Jimi Hendrix standard "Voodoo Child", as do Les Go ("The Girls") on "I Can't Go For That", originally performed by Hall and Oates. Chris Ardoin and his group Double Clutchin' may give you a new appreciation for zydeco with their rendition of "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher" (originally done by Jackie Wilson), and may even motivate you to check out his brother, Sean Ardoin & Zydekool, as well. Finally, Tukuleur, two brothers from Senegal whose music I cannot locate in the United States with the exception of the one song on this CD, make the song "Afrika (Africa)" (originally by Toto, whom I don't remember) their very own. There are no bad songs on the CD, but those are the best of the lot.
"Cover the World" and "Global Soul" almost single-handedly provided me with the bridge I needed to the wonderful, amazing universe of world music, and they may just do the same for you.
Gets old PDQ!.......2006-07-21
I used to work at a store in the mall, that often circulated several putumayo titles on our sound system which we also sold. We had Cuba, Samba Bossa Nova, Asian Groove, Arabic Groove, Zydeco, World Lounge, African Groove, Euro Lounge, Global Soul, just to name a few! I loved them all, even after listening to them every time I worked for almost a year...except one! Cover the world, drove me up the wall the first few times I heard it. Now, there are a few good songs on here ("Ain't no sunshine", is my fav) but overall, not for long term listening in my opinion. Hearing Asian women sing "No woman no cry" gets flat out annoying after awhile! Would recommend the titles I stated above, over this one.
Fun--but not one of Putomayo's most stellar works....mm.......2006-03-02
Most of the Putomayo I own are CDs I can play over and over. "Cover the World" was interesting the first time around, but I doubt I will be revisiting the collection as often as I do "Celtic Tides" or any of the others with more original works.
Standouts are Kidjo's "Voodoo Child," and the 2 selections by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Fatal Mambo - Fatal Mambo.......2005-02-05
A good collection of afro-cuban misic. A very good sense of rythem & music with some cheek! A French group worth having in your collection. Recommend you give it a try, it is addictive.
Fatal Mambo is not so fatal.......2001-11-01
Other reviewers claim Fatal Mambo made their feet move, but I'd say that may be because of the rhythms themselves and not the band. Fatal Mambo is made up of fine musicians who understand Afro-Cuban music well (among other rhythms), but they lack the tightness, the power, the magic one can hear in well known bands such as Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Larry Harlow, and so forth. A acouple of tracks (Salsaioli & Tu Le Sais) reminded me of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, but again fell short in tightness, power, and magic. I was disappointed the band did not credit the composers of some of the well pieces they reinterpreted. Overall, this CD is interesting from the listening point, but very weak from the dancer's perspective.
Fatal Mambo (Import).......2001-10-14
Import was a nice effort but fell far short of fatal Mambos first release this CD was stale and had no groove what so ever. In the land of Mambo & Salsa my Cuban and Puerto Rican brothers are still kings i.e. Cubanismo and Eddie Palmierri. Yo digo si vas a bailar... "BAILA" con musica buena!
Wonderful Composition.......1999-01-09
Sung in French and blended with elements of Gypsy and Rai music, this is the greatest and classiest salsa album I've ever heard, easily worthy of 10 stars. There is not a bad note in the whole album and if you know your music, you can even hear a well-placed bit of Mozart somewhere in there ....
More driving Latin rhythms from Provence.......1998-07-27
Not only does this CD have style and rhythm, it has humour a la francaise. More terrific music that has movement and grace and makes you want to dance and drive, no less sing along. This time lyrics are provided in the jewel-box liner, but they are illegible: too small and tightly koened to be of any use. Why do designers design for themselves instead of the listener reader, especially in the music industry? If readers can't read it, why bother--except to please onanistic designer and insensitive producer. There's plenty of space for more liner discussion of the tracks: What's there is helpful, interesting, just not enough for those of us who would like the maximum appreciation of a good CD. Here's to more great music from Fatal Mambo!

Customer Reviews:
Latin music in French, African group did an EXCELLENT job.......2005-07-05
Latin music in French, African group did an EXCELLENT job.
I must say that this is great and very well put together.
I was born in Chile and speak English, Spanish and French.
When listening to Fatal Mambo, I sometimes forget I am listening to songs created in French... it sounds soooo Latin.
Perhaps this is because Latin music was greatly affected by African influence.
Without our fellow Africans brothers, Latin music would not be as we know it. Thanks Fatal Mambo
BTW, another must have is their self titled 'Fatal Mambo' album.
Over Produced Latin Music.......2001-12-28
I was disappointed with this CD compared to the reviews it received from Amazon and others. The music sounds tin-y and small as if from one synth keyboard. The music evokes little more than imagining what the recording studio looked like where it was produced.
Melodies sound too similar from song to song and the entire effort is undermined by a lack of excitement in the rhythm.
Pura Rumba!.......2000-03-17
I am working as a salsa DJ, and I can say that RUMBAGITATION is one of the best Latin music albums ever produced. Not only for listening but especially for dancing, which is the essence of Afro-Cuban music... I played several songs at a recent dance event, and people just got crazy! Fatal Mambo perfectly dominates the crossover of an indefinite number of styles, their cumbia-reggae-salsa blends being outstanding. And the French... Well, English Salsa always sounds a bit strange to me, but French seems almost as perfect as Spanish in this case. Try also the 1997 release FATAL MAMBO, its different, more experimental, more jazzy, but great as well! Hope there will be more in the future...
The letter of the songs.......1999-10-15
I heard the CD and it's just one of the best that i have bot this year. The thing is that i would appreciate very much if you can send me the letter of all the songs that appears in CD. Please sorry with my english if you found some errors i writing from venezuela.
High energy, well-produced, great vocals.......1998-08-24
First half is Latin/timbale/salsa music sung in French. Very good. I love the piece that mixes Latin timbale with Flamenco guitar. Some good hip-hop too. Mi Hombre is beautiful, sung in Spanish. Final song is kooky but inventive.
