An award-winning photographer as well as an acclaimed saxophonist, Leo Gandelman credits his involvement in the visual arts with helping to shape his musical achievements. "In a sense, the process of visualization and creating images taught me a lot about jazz," he says. "I realized I could have my own style and the same level of creativity and improvisation with music that I experienced with photography." Gandelman's newest album, Brazilian Soul (Verve Forecast), finds the Rio native mixing contemporary jazz with the rich musical traditions of his homeland. On "A R" (The Frog)" (featured), his sleek alto melody blows across a bed of lilting Brazilian vocals.

As you might expect, Timeless isn't your parents' Sergio Mendes. Take "Mais Que Nada," the opener from that topselling staple of post-60s, post-bossa, near-kitsch Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: Greatest Hits. Here it's no simple, slinky groove. The Black-Eyed Peas are along for the bumpin' ride. What it amounts to is the same intercultural collision that happened when bossa nova met jazz and pop via Stan Getz's tenor sax, except here the meeting is between the lounge and, presumably, the street. John Legend and India.Arie keep the session on a downtempo, neo Brazilian vibe on "Please Baby Don't" and the title track (respectively). Once those are tunes end, though, it's back to the bump and the beats and the irresistible party vibe of the set. Don't fret, though, as the Peas keep things light enough to trigger innocent headbobs and chilled out dance steps. Just as you might hear Timeless and agree that it ain't your parents' Sergio, your parents can also hear will.i.am's and the Peas's pivotal roles and say that it's not their kids' Black-Eyed Peas, either --Andrew BartlettDescription
Timeless is the magnificent new album by the legendary Sergio Mendes. Produced by and featuring Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, this album is a wholly original synthesis of music from the man who--40 years ago--brought Brazil 66 and "Mas Que Nada" to the world. Timeless beautifully blends the urban culture of Brazil, samba and bossa nova with the urban culture of America, hip hop and rap, the results of which are truly spectacular.Putting together the project, Will and Sergio, of course, brought in the Black Eyed Peas. They also recruited some of the biggest urban-pop artists of the last several decades, each a Sergio fan, to contribute to various tracks. Featured artists include Erykah Badu, Justin Timberlake, India.Arie, Q-Tip, John Legend, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, and members of the Roots and Jurassic 5.

Get ready for your jazz education. These virgin, unremixed tracks taken from the 1960s Verve vaults were a major influence on Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza and Eric Hilton years before they spun epic documents like The Mirror Conspiracy. Their time capsule is a bubbling, Brazilian soul-jazz blast, starting with the sensuous "Menina Flor" by Stan Getz and Luis Bonfa. Jimmy Smith's "Road Song" is a classic of '60s hard bop, while Kenyon Hopkins's "Hard Latin" shows the kind of groovy organ jazz that was popular in bars from Philly to hot 'Lanta. Things go left with Cal Tjader's "The Fakir," a day-glo Middle Eastern track influenced by Coltrane's "My Favorite Things," while Astrud Gilberto pulls a Nancy Sinatra on another freaky standout, "Light My Fire." Walter Wanderley, Wynton Kelly, Chico Hamilton, and Elis Regina also light up the night, along with your hi-fi. --Ken MicallefCustomer Reviews:

I think they did a great job in letting their public know what inspires them to conceive the sounds they so well create.
The songs in this compilation range from Bossa Nova to early Latin Jazz...a truly remarkable spectrum of early sounds that planted the seed for part of what is now known as loounge music.

This dizzyingly diverse melting pot of sounds is a perfect primer on tropicalia--and then some. Tropicalia arose in the late 1960s as a genre informed by rock, bossa nova, soul, and underground rhythms, all mashed together to create an electrifying new movement in Brazilian music. The artists assembled here--Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa-are all an integral part of the tropicalia scene. Each, however, makes their own potent artistic statement. Enthusiastic vocals, inspired chants, inventive loops, and hushed arrangements collide throughout this expanse collection. You're never quite sure what you'll hear from track to track. Gal Costa's "Vou Recomecar" is a delight, playing like a foreign counterpart to Dusty Springfield's blue-eyed soul sparkle. The genius, however, is that every moment on Tropicalia sounds both classic and modern at the same time. Most everything here is as urgent and electric as anything you'll hear on contemporary radio. --Joey GuerraAlbum Description
Tropicalia in the late 1960s revolutionized Brazilian music mixing Psychedelic Rock, avant-garde musique concrete (tape loops, sound experiments), Samba, Funk and Soul into a truly unique combination. This is the first album to bring together all the artists involved in Tropicalia, Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa and more. Os Mutantes, the sophisticated musical anarchists from Sao Paulo not only became the musical template for Beck, they were also discovered by Kurt Cobain on tour in Brazil who tried (and failed) to get them to support Nirvana. CD comes complete with the customary extensive 40 page booklet that is full of exclusive photos. Soul Jazz. 2006.Album Details

Tropicalia, again.......2006-07-19
a) Tom Ze was there.
b) Jorge Ben or Jor Benjor was not.
c) Nara Leao was there on the cover and in the poetic "Lindoneia" with Caetano. Maybe the Caetano song in English was included as a marker of his exile after the Military Redeemer coup cracked down on anyone offending "values."
I believe Jorge Ben was always his own man. Gil, after Tropicalia, and Caetano, also after Tropicalia, discovered how great Jorge Ben was. Now, a US group also likes him.
Maybe Jards Macalé should be included. The problem with compilations from Brazil is that it's such a huge country, with so many different rhythms; it's hard to pick and choose. Man is lazy. It's easier to go with the "pop." Oops, pop, goes the weasel.
pretty swell.......2006-06-27
The 60s Happened in Brazil Too!.......2006-06-26
I am a fan of 60s music and vintage 60s sounds, and this album is a treasure chest of pyschedelia that I had never been exposed to before.
I don't hand out too many 5 stars (or 1 star for that matter), but this one is worthy if you love that sound....
More fuzz!!! psychedelic brazillian style!.......2006-05-24
Some genius compiled this list of legends from Brasil and created a masterpiece! Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa and Tom Ze and others!
Here are songs from the 60's-70's of Brasil that rocked the house and these songs still stand the test of time.
these songs have many different ranges in sounds but you wanna get up shake it up when you hear'em and maybe take a tab or two and just get down.
You have some great Bossa Nova overtones all over it but when you least expect it the Mutants will play something trippy, you'll never know who's gonna play what.
You get a good sample of all of the different stylings these artist are capable of.
this CD is a must! this CD is an incredible starter kit for anyone interested in the musical legends of Brasil.

red hot and best!.......2007-05-14
the music, those great catchy samba and bossa nova tunes that became wildly popular during the 1960s, are suited to each of the artists making a guest appearance on the cd.
among the highlights are the trip-hop infused 'corcovado' by everything but the girl, the dance-club happy 'boy from ipanema' by crystal waters--which also contains one of her best vocal performances--, sting's loving, pensive 'how insensitive', maxwell's calming 'security' and caetano veloso's highly erotic 'e preciso perdoar'.
the collection, generally speaking, is a great party cd and each song is treated with a great deal of ingenuity and integrity.
New Takes on Brazilian Pop.......2005-06-30
Most of the songs contained herein were written way back in the day by Antonio Carlos Jobim and at least a few should be vaguely familiar: "The Girl From Ipanema", of course, but also "One Note Samba", "Waters Of March", and "Water To Drink". But these aren't the original versions--they're updates in a variety of styles. Some work pretty well, some will make you want to hurl (mainly Sting's take on "How Insensitive", which is droning and pointless).
Notable are: a punched-up synth-heavy "Ipanema" by one-hit-wonder Crystal Waters, jazz group Incognito on "Water To Drink", world-music-loving David Byrne and sultry Marisa Monte on "Waters Of March", the well-known Caetano Veloso and Ryuichi Sakamoto with the lesser-known Cesaria Evora on "E Preciso Perdoar", Stereolab's quirky and strange "One Note Samba", and Bebel Gilberto on "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo".
The Red Hot series, which started with the Cole Porter tribute "Red Hot + Blue", has always done excellent work and this compilation is no exception. If you'd like to sample Brazilian pop music of a certain era but you're terrified of breaking out your dad's dusty old Jobim LPs, this is a great way to see what's what.
Also the liner notes are extensive and informative, so you really get your money's worth. I'm still not clear on the divide between samba and bossa nova, but I reckon that's my fault.
Listening Pleasure-RED HOT+RIO.......2004-03-03
Great for Jobim Fans.......2002-07-16
An excellent addition. I have most of the songs on the album on at least two other CDs, but the artists have played with the songs enough to complement the originals.

What an excellent CD!.......2004-11-17
Frankly I was suprised to find that the CD contains some 39 tracks!!! The best of which are definitely the live tracks (I don't usualy care for live music recordings, but the sound quality of these is excellent, and really conveys the energy of the roda.
I had previously neglected to mention that the CD liner book contains a history of the art of capoeira as well as all of the song lyrics, and their translations (in english!)... That alone is worth the purchase, and makes this CD an extremely useful resource for anyone trying to learn the songs for classess (think text book).
Good stuff, a must own for anyone interested in Capoeira Angola.

Reaching deep into its cavernous vaults, Verve has extracted a rich bountiful of moody and sentimental jazz, perfect for those long, expectant evenings or those equally long, rain-filled days. Nicely packaged with nostalgic, sepia-toned photographs on both the box and each individual CD, A Jazz Romance contains nearly 60 songs guaranteed to set a distinctly low- keyed mood, equal parts sultry and sad. The vast majority of the material is from bygone days of the '40s and '50s, with the more recent entries retaining that flavor. The four discs are entitled In Dreams, Ever, Believing, and Always. They're rather interchangeable, sharing many of the same artists and each having as many vocals as instrumentals, yet each does have some distinction from the others. In Dreams features the great saxophones of Johnny Hodges on "The Last Time I Saw Paris" and Ben Webster on "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." Ever has marvelous versions of "My Man" by Sarah Vaughn and "The Shadow of Your Smile" by Dexter Gordon. Believing contains a contemporaneous version of "Some Other Time" by guitarist Mark Whitfield and Diana Krall, along with an outstanding example of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's versatility on "Alfie." Always, perhaps the dreamiest of the lot, has Chet Baker on "Alone Together," Illinois Jacquet on "Star Dust," and Stan Getz doing "Thanks for the Memories." Concentrating exclusively on the romantic side of jazz, this compilation contains an abundance of subtle, emotional music offering great listening in addition to setting the all-important mood. --Wally ShoupCustomer Reviews:

Captures Barbieri's Virtuosity and his Few Weaknesses.......2006-04-28
When expressed through music, romantic (sexual) passions can take on spiritual or universal dimensions that far exceed the parameters of the original inspiration. Music can reframe our perspective from a stationary being in a stationary room to the reality of an object spinning in a circle on a globe that is whirling around a star that is itself twirling around a galactic center whose galaxy is flying around a galactic cluster. Good musicians always keep their eyes on the center as they trek through the dizzying loops of infinite forms (circles, ellipses). Some of the views the musicians on "Bolivia/Under Fire" offer up are truly spectacular. They are adept at contorting tempos almost beyond recognition, only to have them come careening back with added vigor. This, to me, is the most powerful kind of jazz fusion, where the violence is continually mitigated by sensitive hands.
Barbieri often starts at the destination and moves in retrograde fashion, which makes for some rough contours and sudden shifts. This is because he is intoxicated by visions and unconcerned with the future. Contrasted with this impulsiveness is the perfectly formed and developed structure of "Merciditas." On "Ninos," the most dramatic song, Barbieri pulls out all the stops, and lets out screetching altissimo wails near the end which are followed by a weathered descending line that is wonderfully fatigued. Meanwhile, the bassist has been charmed and his rubbery, supercharged notes fly about maniacally before drifting airily into the folds of Barbieri's luxurious curtain. Barbieri creates the musical equivalent of a South American revolution, with lots of little kids running around with machine guns.
This music has the anonymous character of, say, gothic art. And, like that art, it is engulfed in suffering and insights.
I usually do not listen to "Eclypse/Michellina" or "Bolivia" in their entirety - Barbieri can get overbearing and amateurish at times too. Another weakness is on "Antonico," a short, beautiful latin composition that he botches (in my humble opinion) by overproducing multiple sax voices that are spliced together rather clumsily. This ravishing melody needs only one voice, one that is allowed to convey its romantic thoughts in an unhurried manner, without interruption. Instead of the certainty of love, we get its confusion. I think what he was trying to achieve here could have been done, but by having multiple sax voices only in the last iteration of the melody, which would convey the scattering of the personality that romantic passions can produce. In the recorded version, they come in too early and muddy the water.
Some of Barbieri's vocals sound like an animal dying in the rain forest and do not produce the desired effect. (He's kind of a nutty guy.)
But this music is very powerful, has something existential about it, reflects what is now an extinct animal: the human being evolving, in touch with God. The musicians are more like supplicants, sacrificing themselves in the music, which is liquid and runs. The early 70's were heady times, especially in New York, where this music was recorded. Nothing else I've ever heard surpasses the intensity recorded on this album.
Soaring Melodies and Dense Rhythms.......2004-12-16
Old-time cognoscenti and early-adopters of Gato Barbieri can be thankful now that his pre-Caliente solo work on the Flying Dutchman label is being reissued and made available to those of us who are second or third-generation Barbieri fans. I remember listening to more knowledgeable jazz fans talk of Barbieri when I was a young teenager but I never got to hear what they were talking about until Caliente swept the airwaves. I did eventually obtain Bolivia on cassette, but it certainly didn't have the rich fullness of sound as does this CD.
Gato Barbieri is perhaps the best tenor saxophonist of my lifetime and starting with the fabulous Merceditas, he wastes little time living up to that accolade. Soaring melodies and dense rhythms envelop the listener in a state of entrancement as the music progresses.
The entire CD is good, but I particularly enjoy Merceditas, Bolivia, Ninos, the frenetic El Parana, the smooth, flowing Antonico and Maria Domingas. Barbieri's rendition of Atahualpa Yupanqui's Yo Le Canto a La Luna demonstrates his rarely presented vocal ability.
If you are a Barbieri fan who came to his music upon the release of Caliente or later, you owe it to yourself to get this and hear where he came from. If you are an early fan, well you just need to get the CD and give your scratched up LPs a rest. Double your pleasure and order this today!
