Brazilian Soul

Editorial Reviews

From Jazziz
An award-winning photographer as well as an acclaimed saxophonist, Leo Gandelman credits his involvement in the visual arts with helping to shape his musical achievements. "In a sense, the process of visualization and creating images taught me a lot about jazz," he says. "I realized I could have my own style and the same level of creativity and improvisation with music that I experienced with photography." Gandelman's newest album, Brazilian Soul (Verve Forecast), finds the Rio native mixing contemporary jazz with the rich musical traditions of his homeland. On "A R" (The Frog)" (featured), his sleek alto melody blows across a bed of lilting Brazilian vocals.

As you might expect, Timeless isn't your parents' Sergio Mendes. Take "Mais Que Nada," the opener from that topselling staple of post-60s, post-bossa, near-kitsch Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: Greatest Hits. Here it's no simple, slinky groove. The Black-Eyed Peas are along for the bumpin' ride. What it amounts to is the same intercultural collision that happened when bossa nova met jazz and pop via Stan Getz's tenor sax, except here the meeting is between the lounge and, presumably, the street. John Legend and India.Arie keep the session on a downtempo, neo Brazilian vibe on "Please Baby Don't" and the title track (respectively). Once those are tunes end, though, it's back to the bump and the beats and the irresistible party vibe of the set. Don't fret, though, as the Peas keep things light enough to trigger innocent headbobs and chilled out dance steps. Just as you might hear Timeless and agree that it ain't your parents' Sergio, your parents can also hear will.i.am's and the Peas's pivotal roles and say that it's not their kids' Black-Eyed Peas, either --Andrew Bartlett

Description

Timeless is the magnificent new album by the legendary Sergio Mendes. Produced by and featuring Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, this album is a wholly original synthesis of music from the man who--40 years ago--brought Brazil 66 and "Mas Que Nada" to the world. Timeless beautifully blends the urban culture of Brazil, samba and bossa nova with the urban culture of America, hip hop and rap, the results of which are truly spectacular.

Putting together the project, Will and Sergio, of course, brought in the Black Eyed Peas. They also recruited some of the biggest urban-pop artists of the last several decades, each a Sergio fan, to contribute to various tracks. Featured artists include Erykah Badu, Justin Timberlake, India.Arie, Q-Tip, John Legend, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, and members of the Roots and Jurassic 5.

5 out of 5 stars As good for dancing as it is for drinking martinis!.......2007-07-27

This CD is just what I expected, great "modernization" of Sergio Mendes' ideas, cool and easy-listening rhythms that make this album as good for dancing as it is for drinking martinis at a Sunset Lounge Bar

4 out of 5 stars Street meets the bossa beat---4.5 stars.......2007-07-02

I didn't like Sergio growing up in the day, I was a Motown fan and couldn't get down with bossa nova or latin beats. "Timeless" manages to keep some of the sound of the old Brazil 66 and add some new flavor via Stevie Wonder who was one of my faves back then. Of course, they've brought in John Legend with some new soul. Then, they top that off by bringing in the Black Eyed Peas, who I'd never have thought of, and the concept just works.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!.......2007-05-16

This album is a classic! My kids actually introduced me to the album. I'm a Sergio Mendes fan from way back. Buy it!!!

5 out of 5 stars I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-10

I am a 52 y/o old fart but once was a cool college d.j. I am not a big rap/hip-hop fan but it sounds fantastic combined with a latin groove. When I was spinning LP's in the late 70's, we thought Sergio Mendes had "sold-out" to pop. What did we know? His music, whether "roots" or "pop" is absolutely beautiful. I admire the creativity of the artists who have made the Timeless CD worthy of its title.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastico!! Eu amo Brasil!.......2007-05-08

This album is off the hook! I never knew this hidden gem was so good. It is amazing what Will.I.Am and Sergio did. There are so many songs that are my favs such as Mas Que Nada, The Frog, that Samba Song, and etc. There is a great compilation of rap, samba, bossa nova, singing, and etc. Black Eye Peas, Q-Tip, Black Thought (Roots), John Legend, and etc. makes this a wonderful compilation and celeration of the beautiful Brazilian culture.

My wife is Brazilian and we love the album so much we even played some of it at our wedding reception. This album should be selling a lot more and deserve worldwide acclaim. Sergio Mendes "Timeless" is truly the best kept secret...you gotta listen to this!

Get ready for your jazz education. These virgin, unremixed tracks taken from the 1960s Verve vaults were a major influence on Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza and Eric Hilton years before they spun epic documents like The Mirror Conspiracy. Their time capsule is a bubbling, Brazilian soul-jazz blast, starting with the sensuous "Menina Flor" by Stan Getz and Luis Bonfa. Jimmy Smith's "Road Song" is a classic of '60s hard bop, while Kenyon Hopkins's "Hard Latin" shows the kind of groovy organ jazz that was popular in bars from Philly to hot 'Lanta. Things go left with Cal Tjader's "The Fakir," a day-glo Middle Eastern track influenced by Coltrane's "My Favorite Things," while Astrud Gilberto pulls a Nancy Sinatra on another freaky standout, "Light My Fire." Walter Wanderley, Wynton Kelly, Chico Hamilton, and Elis Regina also light up the night, along with your hi-fi. --Ken Micallef

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great *JAZZ* album... TC only selected old tracks........2005-12-01

I find it funny that so many Thievery Corporation fans are reviewing this disc. This is pretty much a JAZZ disc of music from the 50's and 60s with tracks that just happen to be chosen by the Thievery Corporation. There was no sampling or editing, or anything. Just original music from 50 odd years ago. With all that said, I find this compilation to be excellent. If you like Bossa Nova, or some cool laid back jazz, then you'll probably like this disc. The music is lively but light. Give it a try, if you do, all your wildest dreams will come true. Ok, maybe not, but this is one fine CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is where they get their inspiration.......2005-03-13

I remember the first time I listened to a record by Thievery Corp. I became instantly aware of how different their sound is. I could not help wonder where this pair gets their inspiration, and what serves them so well in their constant stream of well engineered sounds.
Well...this is it!
I think they did a great job in letting their public know what inspires them to conceive the sounds they so well create.
The songs in this compilation range from Bossa Nova to early Latin Jazz...a truly remarkable spectrum of early sounds that planted the seed for part of what is now known as loounge music.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Classic Thievery.......2004-10-26

This CD by all means is not like Thievery's other stuff. When I first bought the album I was a little disappointed. I had boughten "The Richest Man in Babylon" and had fallen in love with these guys. So when I got this CD it just didnt do it for me at first. It was just all jazz tracks. But I took it with me one day to the library to study with and I have to admit it is really a great CD. I am glad I bought it. All the tracks are really amazing once you get into them. But hey if you're not into jazz dont buy this cd.

4 out of 5 stars What's Old Is New Again..........2003-08-09

Bossa Nova, Jazz, Reggae and Lounge-Pop are what the Thievery Corporation is all about. The resurrection of the downtempo-lounge movement of recent years is a reflection of the original musical craze of over 40 years ago. It is nice to see that artists such as Willie Bobo, the Gilbertos, Stan Getz, Sergio Mendes, and other artists that my parents grooved to, have now come full circle for a new generation. Although this music may sound a bit dated to those born after 1985, those who can appreciate music before the MTV age can chill out with a cool drink and some headphones, stereo lounge chair optional. This CD is a nice tribute compilation of various artists and gives us an idea of TC's inspirational roots.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough!.......2003-06-11

I first heard this compilation in the Pacific Restaurant in Dublin. I asked the server for the name of the CD and ordered it right away. I'm a boomer and was heavily into the "Top 10". Finally, I've matured beyond that. Thievery has done a great job of placing the music so that it flows along. The instrumentals are catchy enough to linger in your head and complex enough to engage you in multiple listenings. First rate. I'm ordering this for my daughter!

5 out of 5 stars THE original divas of jazz.......2007-06-08

This compilation is everything you want to hear on jazz divas and so much more. You fall in love with the CD as soon as it is on. EVERY song - no exception is awesome. They are not the usual stuff you get on the "greatest hits" CD's, but stuff you may not have necessarily heard, but really awesome.

Get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Must have CD to accompany Verve Remixed, Vol.3.......2006-03-31

I found it very interesting to compare the originals on this CD to the remixed versions found in Verve Remixed, Vol. 3, especially since some songs were relatively obscure. On its own, the CD is great for a relaxing road trip or even a cocktail party of appropriate theme.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Collection of Various Genres.......2005-09-04

This Album Gives you a little bit of everything. Tracks 2,10 and 13 are my favorite. I would recomend this album to anyone who is trying to get a taste of the various Jazz/R&B styles.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Selection.......2005-05-11

There isn't an insane amount of commentary to say about these excellent caliber songs. The names and artists speak for themselves. I'm also surprised that this one is so much cheaper then the other. Anyway, the selection of songs is awesome. With giants like Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Jimmy Smith, and Dinah Washington the selection is sure to be a hit no matter which songs of theirs are chosen. If you want a good mix of pure unaltered 'chill' jazz, buy it...it's not even expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible originals!.......2005-04-09

Do yourself an enormous favour and slap down the4-7 dollars this album costs. You will delight your ears with some great classics that give you insight into the newly reworked mixes. Excellent!

This dizzyingly diverse melting pot of sounds is a perfect primer on tropicalia--and then some. Tropicalia arose in the late 1960s as a genre informed by rock, bossa nova, soul, and underground rhythms, all mashed together to create an electrifying new movement in Brazilian music. The artists assembled here--Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa—-are all an integral part of the tropicalia scene. Each, however, makes their own potent artistic statement. Enthusiastic vocals, inspired chants, inventive loops, and hushed arrangements collide throughout this expanse collection. You're never quite sure what you'll hear from track to track. Gal Costa's "Vou Recomecar" is a delight, playing like a foreign counterpart to Dusty Springfield's blue-eyed soul sparkle. The genius, however, is that every moment on Tropicalia sounds both classic and modern at the same time. Most everything here is as urgent and electric as anything you'll hear on contemporary radio. --Joey Guerra

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tropicalia, again.......2006-07-19

It's nice to see more of this revolutionary era in Brazilian music released. However, anyone checking who was performing a main role in the movement, by looking at the Sargeant Pepper's-inspired cover of Tropicalia, the 1968 album, will notice that:

a) Tom Ze was there.

b) Jorge Ben or Jor Benjor was not.

c) Nara Leao was there on the cover and in the poetic "Lindoneia" with Caetano. Maybe the Caetano song in English was included as a marker of his exile after the Military Redeemer coup cracked down on anyone offending "values."

I believe Jorge Ben was always his own man. Gil, after Tropicalia, and Caetano, also after Tropicalia, discovered how great Jorge Ben was. Now, a US group also likes him.

Maybe Jards Macalé should be included. The problem with compilations from Brazil is that it's such a huge country, with so many different rhythms; it's hard to pick and choose. Man is lazy. It's easier to go with the "pop." Oops, pop, goes the weasel.

4 out of 5 stars pretty swell.......2006-06-27

if i were in charge of this project i'd change the following: more jorge ben, more gal costa, less mutantes, less tom ze (or better song choices), and maybe replace lost in paradise for a different caetano veloso song. notheless, this album is really excellent, and a great intro to tropicalia music.

5 out of 5 stars The 60s Happened in Brazil Too!.......2006-06-26

One of the best reveiewed ablums of 2006 (according to Metacritic.com), I was not disappointed.

I am a fan of 60s music and vintage 60s sounds, and this album is a treasure chest of pyschedelia that I had never been exposed to before.

I don't hand out too many 5 stars (or 1 star for that matter), but this one is worthy if you love that sound....

5 out of 5 stars More fuzz!!! psychedelic brazillian style!.......2006-05-24

Wow! this is a must have.
Some genius compiled this list of legends from Brasil and created a masterpiece! Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa and Tom Ze and others!
Here are songs from the 60's-70's of Brasil that rocked the house and these songs still stand the test of time.
these songs have many different ranges in sounds but you wanna get up shake it up when you hear'em and maybe take a tab or two and just get down.
You have some great Bossa Nova overtones all over it but when you least expect it the Mutants will play something trippy, you'll never know who's gonna play what.
You get a good sample of all of the different stylings these artist are capable of.
this CD is a must! this CD is an incredible starter kit for anyone interested in the musical legends of Brasil.

This immaculately conceived and packaged fundraiser for the AIDS awareness foundation is a sharp tribute to Brazilian pop. David Byrne, Milton Nascimento, PM Dawn, Stereolab, Gilberto Gil, and Crystal Waters (vamping through "The Boy from Ipanema") are among those weighing in with sophisticated tunes that will cross from cocktail hipsters to the leading edge of the mass audience. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars rhythm music.......2007-06-08

I bought this for a friend after I bought it for myself. Great variety of songs. Wonderful for parties. Would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars red hot and best!.......2007-05-14

of the many red hots i've listened to, this one is the best!

the music, those great catchy samba and bossa nova tunes that became wildly popular during the 1960s, are suited to each of the artists making a guest appearance on the cd.

among the highlights are the trip-hop infused 'corcovado' by everything but the girl, the dance-club happy 'boy from ipanema' by crystal waters--which also contains one of her best vocal performances--, sting's loving, pensive 'how insensitive', maxwell's calming 'security' and caetano veloso's highly erotic 'e preciso perdoar'.

the collection, generally speaking, is a great party cd and each song is treated with a great deal of ingenuity and integrity.

4 out of 5 stars New Takes on Brazilian Pop.......2005-06-30

Now, mind you, I can't tell the samba from the bossa nova from...some other type of music that might be played in Brazil. But I still have an interest in hearing the quasi-tropical cocktail lounge-style pop tunes of this mighty South American giant. They speak Portugese there, you know. And are known to launch at a moment's notice into the lamabada, which is a forbidden dance.

Most of the songs contained herein were written way back in the day by Antonio Carlos Jobim and at least a few should be vaguely familiar: "The Girl From Ipanema", of course, but also "One Note Samba", "Waters Of March", and "Water To Drink". But these aren't the original versions--they're updates in a variety of styles. Some work pretty well, some will make you want to hurl (mainly Sting's take on "How Insensitive", which is droning and pointless).

Notable are: a punched-up synth-heavy "Ipanema" by one-hit-wonder Crystal Waters, jazz group Incognito on "Water To Drink", world-music-loving David Byrne and sultry Marisa Monte on "Waters Of March", the well-known Caetano Veloso and Ryuichi Sakamoto with the lesser-known Cesaria Evora on "E Preciso Perdoar", Stereolab's quirky and strange "One Note Samba", and Bebel Gilberto on "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo".

The Red Hot series, which started with the Cole Porter tribute "Red Hot + Blue", has always done excellent work and this compilation is no exception. If you'd like to sample Brazilian pop music of a certain era but you're terrified of breaking out your dad's dusty old Jobim LPs, this is a great way to see what's what.

Also the liner notes are extensive and informative, so you really get your money's worth. I'm still not clear on the divide between samba and bossa nova, but I reckon that's my fault.

4 out of 5 stars Listening Pleasure-RED HOT+RIO.......2004-03-03

I enjoyed 1.Used Your Head by Money Mark, 2.Corcovado done by Everything but the Girl, the funkie beats were great, 3.Desafinado done by Astrud Gilberto & George Michael was soothing and relaxing, 4.Non-Fiction Burning was enjoyable 5.Crystal Waters' version of The Boy from Ipenema, LOVED IT!! the music makes your body want to move, it will be favorite, 7.Seguranca (Security) done by MAXWELL with that sultry soft voice of his & the music, this is a favorite, 8.E Preciso Perdoar done by Cesaria Evora & Caetano Veloso w/Ryuichi Sakamoto on the keyboard, Damn I love Cesaria's voice, she got off, this is definetly a favorite, 10.Water to Drink by Incognito w/Omar & Anna Caram was nice, 11.Dancing by Milton Nascimento was enjoyable, 12.How Insensitive done by Antonio Carlos Jobim & Sting, I didn't care for Sting singing this song, I do enjoy Sting's music but not this, he wasn't the man for it. 13.Water of March done by David Byrne & Marisa Monte was okay, but I enjoy Al Jarreau & Oleta Adams rendition on "A Twist of Jobim" better, 15.One Note Samba/Surfboard by Stereolab & Herbie Mann, I didn't care for that techno or computer sounding stuff, it sounded like the music on The Wiz when they were trying to get away from the trash cans, it will get a skip, 17.Black Orpheus Dub by Mad Professor, it had sort of a Rasta, funk, techno flair which was okay, 18.Chico Science & X DJ Soul Slinger, I couldn't get into that either, that will get a skip too, 19.Funk'N Lata's Sambadrome, was short & funky, 20.Giberto Gil's Refazenda, his voice went well with the song, 21.Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo done by Cazuza & Bebel Gilberto was nice, but the sound was off, it sounded like they were singing in a tube. I manly purchased this CD because it had my 2 favorite singers Maxwell and Cesaria Evora & I enjoyed both of their songs immensely. I am totally satisfied with this purchase and it will be one of my favorite CDs which I listen to often.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Jobim Fans.......2002-07-16

If you like Bossa Nova, particularly Antonio Carlos Jobim, you will love this CD. It has covers by many current artists of his songs, as well as some other Brazilian music. I like how the liner has the lyrics in English, but almost all the songs are in Portuguese. The David Byrne Waters of March in an exception, where he sings in English, and a woman is singing in Portuguese, but it works out very well.

An excellent addition. I have most of the songs on the album on at least two other CDs, but the artists have played with the songs enough to complement the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely unstoppable listening.......2007-02-23

I LOVE this cd more than any other that I own, and that is saying a lot. The diversity of sound, the pulse of rhythm and fantastic assortment of artists makes this one of the best CD's I have ever listened to!! NO KIDDING!
I very highly recommend this cd to anyone even remotely interested in latin american music. The depth of expressiveness will move you, in your heart and in your heels - as you will certainly not be able to resist the duende!
P.S. This is not what you think of when you think of Peruano music...pan pipes, etc. Just as soulful, but a completely different sound sphere.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia for Peruanos-- and Good Music for Everybody Else.......2005-08-25

Wonderful stuff here-- smoky, sexy music from coastal Peru. I lived there for three years, and the clubs sometimes featured these performers-- especially the sublime Susana Baca. She peformed in her bare feet, her face upraised as if she were communicating with angels.

This is authentic fun from start to finish-- though the last cut, a vanity item from producer David Byrne, is a bit off-- his Spanish is... not comfortable. But the song is good.

Album Description

Capoeira Angola, formerly a regional Brazilian form of self-defense and dance, has its roots in African traditions and is becoming popular in urban centers around the world, growing into a widely taught art form and philosophy. This call-and-response singing is accompanied by compelling rhythms played on berimbau and percussion instruments that express and control the performance of the Capoeira fight/dance. The musicians and singers featured on these 39 tracks are among the finest modern performers of Capoeira Angola music.

"A good introduction to this highly passionate and expressive artform." -Cultural Survival Quarterly

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What an excellent CD!.......2004-11-17

I had this CD reccommended to me by my Capoeira Angola instructor, and boy was he right. I own a lot of Capoeira CDs (mostly Regional music), and this is one of the best.

Frankly I was suprised to find that the CD contains some 39 tracks!!! The best of which are definitely the live tracks (I don't usualy care for live music recordings, but the sound quality of these is excellent, and really conveys the energy of the roda.

I had previously neglected to mention that the CD liner book contains a history of the art of capoeira as well as all of the song lyrics, and their translations (in english!)... That alone is worth the purchase, and makes this CD an extremely useful resource for anyone trying to learn the songs for classess (think text book).

Good stuff, a must own for anyone interested in Capoeira Angola.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Capoeira CD.......2003-04-04

I absolutely love this CD. The insert that comes with it gives a lot of useful information and it actually helped me brush up on my Portuguese. I've used this CD on long trips (I am in a performing arts group) and though no one else in the van understands why it keeps me awake when driving for 5-8 hours across country, there you will see me singing and smiling down the highway. I love this CD and recommend it for music aficionados and capoeiristas alike.

5 out of 5 stars excellent choice for learners of angola!.......2002-09-02

this is a great cd for both capoeiristas and world music listeners alike. it is the music for angola which is the more acrobatic capoeira. it is well recorded, beautiful and clear. i find that the music both gives you energy and helps you to focus, i often listen to it while working on my illustrations. i highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Capoeirista de Sao Ceatano-SP.......2002-08-04

I lived in Brasil and spent many years with Bahianos playing Capoeira on the beach, no school or teacher, just friends. I learned more from them than I've seen being taught in any school in the U.S. This music is just as traditional as the ones I played on my berimbau as we played through the night and day. It is a must for all capoeira practitioner who have a taste for the real thing.Buy it. Trust me. You'll love it

5 out of 5 stars Great Beginner's CD.......2001-09-17

This was the first Capoeira CD that I bought. It has excellent liner notes that give a good background of Capoeira. However, what I found most helpful are the lyrics to the songs that are also printed in the liner notes, along with translations in English. It has helped me learn a lot of the songs our group uses.

5 out of 5 stars Double your pleasure!.......2001-03-04

Laurindo Almeida has been a favourite of mine since the 60's (yes, I am just an aging hippie!). My wife bought this album on vinyl years ago - we wore it out. When we saw it as a CD we tripped over each other racing to the cashier! The subtle phrasing, the interplay of these masters, the choice of songs, every facet of this gem sparkles and becomes more lustrous with repeated listening. Sometimes a song or an interpretation sounds SO SIMPLE - until you try to do it! Then you begin to understand what mastery is necessary to make things sound easy. It's so very difficult to do; Charlie Byrd and Laurindo Almeida make the most beautiful music sound simple - wizards!

Reaching deep into its cavernous vaults, Verve has extracted a rich bountiful of moody and sentimental jazz, perfect for those long, expectant evenings or those equally long, rain-filled days. Nicely packaged with nostalgic, sepia-toned photographs on both the box and each individual CD, A Jazz Romance contains nearly 60 songs guaranteed to set a distinctly low- keyed mood, equal parts sultry and sad. The vast majority of the material is from bygone days of the '40s and '50s, with the more recent entries retaining that flavor. The four discs are entitled In Dreams, Ever, Believing, and Always. They're rather interchangeable, sharing many of the same artists and each having as many vocals as instrumentals, yet each does have some distinction from the others.

In Dreams features the great saxophones of Johnny Hodges on "The Last Time I Saw Paris" and Ben Webster on "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." Ever has marvelous versions of "My Man" by Sarah Vaughn and "The Shadow of Your Smile" by Dexter Gordon. Believing contains a contemporaneous version of "Some Other Time" by guitarist Mark Whitfield and Diana Krall, along with an outstanding example of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's versatility on "Alfie." Always, perhaps the dreamiest of the lot, has Chet Baker on "Alone Together," Illinois Jacquet on "Star Dust," and Stan Getz doing "Thanks for the Memories." Concentrating exclusively on the romantic side of jazz, this compilation contains an abundance of subtle, emotional music offering great listening in addition to setting the all-important mood. --Wally Shoup

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An absolutely stunning collection.......2002-12-10

Ballads, I believe, are the real test of musicianship. And this collection has a judicious and delicious selection which is perhaps the best balanced one I know featuring the all time great moments - Clifford Brown's treatment of Rodgers and Harts Where or When will bring tears to your eyes - as well as quirky less known works - If the Moon Turns Green sung by Billy Holiday - the "old", Ben Webster, along with the "new" Mark Whitfield. Please don't think this is or should be "background" music. You only have to listen to Bill Evans playing with Paul Motian and Gary Peacock on CD1 to realise this is a collection of some of the greatest moments in 20th Century music, regardless of genre.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2002-02-22

This selection contains a bunch of great cuts and a few that I could live without, especially the Blossom Dearie tracks. However, as opposed to most collections with weak tracks, this one flows along so well that it is a pleasure to put all four CDS on and let it play in the background on a quiet evening "In." I prefer the companion 4 CD set called "A Night Out with Verve." I would recommend "Out" over "In."

5 out of 5 stars Jazz novice opinion.......2002-02-11

I am a complete novice when it comes to Jazz. Don't know much about it except that I enjoy it. I have to say this set of CD's is a great mood-setter. Definitely softens the atmosphere and relaxes the body and soul. Great music for a night of serenity and romance

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Sampling of Wonderful Performances.......2001-12-28

I put this cd set on my Amazon wishlist, and was very pleased to get it as a gift from my lover. All the old familiar songs, together with songs that I think I remember from my childhood, transport me to space where romance and sentmentality feel like comfortable old wool sweater. Think I'll just sit back... sip some good hot coffee..and hope the boyfriend joins me on the couch

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Follow-up to 'A Night Out with Verve' box.......2001-12-19

Beautiful. Billie Holiday blends seamlessly into Dinah Washington into Johnny Hodges into... this four box is the perfect background atmosphere for your swank cocktail party or that evening of candlelight romance. The compilers have collected a remarkable selection of music from classic Verve jazz heavyweights like Elle and Louie, Sarah Vaughan, Clifford Brown, Coleman Hawkins to, surprisingly, a few lesser known French artists such as Michael Legrand (who wrote the score for the French film 'Les Parapluies De Cherbourg') and Laura Fygi. This is a highly recommended classic jazz collection that will beautifully compliment your romantic evening in and will fit nicely into any classic jazz lovers music collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Captures Barbieri's Virtuosity and his Few Weaknesses.......2006-04-28

This album is apparently two albums put together. I am familiar with "El Gato," an album that is hard to find and too bad because it has wonderful songs on it, some of which are on this one. They are "Merciditas," "Ninos," and "El Parana" and "Vidale Triste." The first three are powerful compositions, affording Barbieri many opportunities to showcase his passion for music, his soaring altissimos, and his versions of John Coltrane's wall of sound (tens of rolling, boiling notes, packed into a time frame that is literally unbelievable). In addition, the percussion, piano and bass voices are all compelling, especially some of the bass lines, which, inspired by Barbieri's visions, scamper about and bubble up out of sheer joy.

When expressed through music, romantic (sexual) passions can take on spiritual or universal dimensions that far exceed the parameters of the original inspiration. Music can reframe our perspective from a stationary being in a stationary room to the reality of an object spinning in a circle on a globe that is whirling around a star that is itself twirling around a galactic center whose galaxy is flying around a galactic cluster. Good musicians always keep their eyes on the center as they trek through the dizzying loops of infinite forms (circles, ellipses). Some of the views the musicians on "Bolivia/Under Fire" offer up are truly spectacular. They are adept at contorting tempos almost beyond recognition, only to have them come careening back with added vigor. This, to me, is the most powerful kind of jazz fusion, where the violence is continually mitigated by sensitive hands.

Barbieri often starts at the destination and moves in retrograde fashion, which makes for some rough contours and sudden shifts. This is because he is intoxicated by visions and unconcerned with the future. Contrasted with this impulsiveness is the perfectly formed and developed structure of "Merciditas." On "Ninos," the most dramatic song, Barbieri pulls out all the stops, and lets out screetching altissimo wails near the end which are followed by a weathered descending line that is wonderfully fatigued. Meanwhile, the bassist has been charmed and his rubbery, supercharged notes fly about maniacally before drifting airily into the folds of Barbieri's luxurious curtain. Barbieri creates the musical equivalent of a South American revolution, with lots of little kids running around with machine guns.

This music has the anonymous character of, say, gothic art. And, like that art, it is engulfed in suffering and insights.

I usually do not listen to "Eclypse/Michellina" or "Bolivia" in their entirety - Barbieri can get overbearing and amateurish at times too. Another weakness is on "Antonico," a short, beautiful latin composition that he botches (in my humble opinion) by overproducing multiple sax voices that are spliced together rather clumsily. This ravishing melody needs only one voice, one that is allowed to convey its romantic thoughts in an unhurried manner, without interruption. Instead of the certainty of love, we get its confusion. I think what he was trying to achieve here could have been done, but by having multiple sax voices only in the last iteration of the melody, which would convey the scattering of the personality that romantic passions can produce. In the recorded version, they come in too early and muddy the water.

Some of Barbieri's vocals sound like an animal dying in the rain forest and do not produce the desired effect. (He's kind of a nutty guy.)

But this music is very powerful, has something existential about it, reflects what is now an extinct animal: the human being evolving, in touch with God. The musicians are more like supplicants, sacrificing themselves in the music, which is liquid and runs. The early 70's were heady times, especially in New York, where this music was recorded. Nothing else I've ever heard surpasses the intensity recorded on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Soaring Melodies and Dense Rhythms.......2004-12-16

I remember the days when Gato Barbieri became the toast of jazz. Caliente had recently been issued and the song Europa was all over jukeboxes and FM radio. It was at long last a North American breakthrough to the mainstream for a man who had toiled in relative obscurity for the better part of two decades. Caliente is today still a best seller for him, but what about his other work?
Old-time cognoscenti and early-adopters of Gato Barbieri can be thankful now that his pre-Caliente solo work on the Flying Dutchman label is being reissued and made available to those of us who are second or third-generation Barbieri fans. I remember listening to more knowledgeable jazz fans talk of Barbieri when I was a young teenager but I never got to hear what they were talking about until Caliente swept the airwaves. I did eventually obtain Bolivia on cassette, but it certainly didn't have the rich fullness of sound as does this CD.
Gato Barbieri is perhaps the best tenor saxophonist of my lifetime and starting with the fabulous Merceditas, he wastes little time living up to that accolade. Soaring melodies and dense rhythms envelop the listener in a state of entrancement as the music progresses.
The entire CD is good, but I particularly enjoy Merceditas, Bolivia, Ninos, the frenetic El Parana, the smooth, flowing Antonico and Maria Domingas. Barbieri's rendition of Atahualpa Yupanqui's Yo Le Canto a La Luna demonstrates his rarely presented vocal ability.
If you are a Barbieri fan who came to his music upon the release of Caliente or later, you owe it to yourself to get this and hear where he came from. If you are an early fan, well you just need to get the CD and give your scratched up LPs a rest. Double your pleasure and order this today!
