The prevailing popular image of African music assumes that it is overwhelmingly rhythm-based and usually involves drumming. But there are plenty of traditions that concentrate primarily on melody and new ones are evolving all the time. Like Souad Massi (Algeria), Vusi Mahlasela (South Africa), Rokia Traore (Mali), and Lokua Kanza (Congo) Henri Dikongue is a singing poet. The Paris-based Cameroonian’s probing lyrics, polyglot musical vocabulary and unruffled sophistication reflect his profound admiration for French chanson icon Charles Aznavour and Gabonese activist/composer Pierre Akendengue. Dikongue applies Caribbean, Brazilian and Latin textures onto home-brewed sounds, embellishing them with urbane sax riffs, quotes from le jazz hot and selected flavors absorbed while café-sitting. An inspired back-up team contributes lightly percussive, mostly acoustic arrangements that suit Dikongue's supple, eloquent tenor to perfection. The lovely, sympathetic supporting alto of his talented cousin, Cathy Renoir, is affectionately recalled from previous albums and remains an especial pleasure. --Christina Roden

Product Description
Henri Dikongué is a spearhead in the revival of the acoustic sounds of Cameroon. In contrast to the country’s high-spirited dance music, Dikongué’s music is more introspective and melodic. Although African rhythms remain the foundation of Dikongué’s music, his songs reflect influences like reggae, samba, salsa, soul and jazz. His goal is "to be able to show people that African music not just a danceable music but there are a lot of different kinds of African music!"

4 out of 5 stars Great music!!!!.......2007-02-09

After listening to this album, i was satisfied that Henri went back to the formula that made the very first two albums of his career great to listen to. I feel like like he let me down on his third album, but now with his fourth album, he picked it up.

4 out of 5 stars Still Doing it.......2006-01-14

Henri Dikongue is still the man with the same cool and meaningful songs from the Wouri. His usage of different
rythms works well. Keep woking hard. Feeling that number
