Hubert is from the little village of Goisern in Austria we visited last year. His Music is wonderful particularly if you understand the Austro-Bavarian dialect.
The Bavarian Jodel-Rap (as I call it)about a poacher on his way into the woods up on the mountain on his old military "Waffenradl" (motorbike)is unique and a must to listen to. My sons get embarrased when I listen to it :-) Other songs range from traditional Austrian to wild to sentimental. All in all a great disc for any Austro-Bavariaphile.

Every now and then you stumble over music so oddball, so fascinating, so off the wall, that you just have to have it. Such was the case for me when I was introduced to Hubert von Goisern und die Alpinkatzen at a party in Vienna.This album, Aufgeigen Statt Niederschiassen, gives an excellent overview of what the Alpinkatzen are all about. The CD runs the gamut from soulful ballads to blistering rap and power rock, all rendered in an unintelligible Austrian dialect, accompanied by accordions and oompah brass as well as the usual rock instrumentarium, and interspersed with virtuoso Tyrolean yodeling. Lets be honest: Hubert von Goisern's voice isn't the suavest one we've ever heard;in fact, his singing is downright coarse,(no crime in rock music I suppose)but the ensemble is great and so are the songs.The raps "Wildschutz Rap" and "Ich brauche Keine $" are the real standouts here; This is urban music without the menace and with some real wit.The man can rap,and the use of yodeling as refrain is sheer genius. I'd say the weak points on this disc are the two instrumental numbers, which are just traditional Austrian folk songs given a beat.Why bother?.Leaving those aside, I'd say it's a real achievement to create such a fun amalgam out of such disparate elements. It's also a real achievement to take America's most suffocating cultural export, rock music, and make it so completely Austrian.This music isn't for everybody, but if you have any interest in popular culture abroad, this could be a worthwhile addition to your music shelf.
