A tribute to the goddess of Seduction.......2002-04-18

Vilayat Khan is a legendary musician and has made history by playing difficult ragas with beauty and immense expression. Jaijaiwanti is a very complex raga. Alot of other ragas are standing very close to it.Des, Ghara, Chaya Nat, Gaud Sarang, Nat, Sorath and Gaur are very close to Jaijaiwanti and care has to be taken when playing it. Vilayat's Alap is very delicate and very emotional with alot of singing techniques embedded inside. His handling of the raga is superb because he explores every aspect and section in vivid detail. He takes time in displaying each and every part of the raga beautifully and delicately. His drut gat has the essence of a Bandish. Probably it was derived from a original Jaijaiwanti Bandish. Conclusively, I would to say that this is a great CD. Vilayat Khan at his best!!

Intense Sounds.......2003-09-16

I'll admit i am fairly new to the indian sound, but as a improvising musician I can attest that this album is right up there with my all time favorites such as Coltranes "A Love Surpreme", the expessiveness is astounding.

I've listened to a good number of albums by indian artists (Shankar/Ali Akbar/Hussain) and nothing has come close to the inensity that this album possesses.

Imrat Khan plays both the sitar and the deeper sounding "bass sitar", the surbahar. We have all heard Ravi Shankar on the sitar, but I had never heard a surbahar before this recording and fell in love with the timbre. Imrat's son, Shafaat Miadaad Khan plays tabla with his father and is world famous also. The harmony of the duets, one a melodic instrument and the other a rhythmic instrument, is lovely. 5 stars.

No need to wonder.......2002-06-28

Although the other review written about this CD may seem to you like gibberish there are 2 words that are definitely readable: best music. Ustad Vilyat Khan is brilliant here. The music starts off sounding the Rag Darbari, but relatively soon takes a twist. Darbari sounds highly noble and majestic and stays that way. This rag, which is a variation of Darbari, takes the listener up and down for a roller coaster ride. The tabla accompaniment is also fantastic. This CD is among the best of classical indian music.

The CD opens with a deeply meditative alaap of surbahar alone. How welcome an opportunity to listen to the subtle and profound expressions of this rarely played instrument. Track 2 has sitar and tabla perfectly married to each other with thrilling and sensitive improvisations. Track 3 is an envigorating and uplifting piece which makes you want to dance. Track 4 is short and joyous based on folk style drawn from the mountains of Himalayas and Rajastan.A well balanced overall selection of pieces to thoroughly enjoy.

What an amazing combination- soulful sarangi by Sultan Khan with sensitive beautiful tabla by Anuradha Pal completes the magic.What is amazing is the way Anuradha's ringing tonal quality complements the sarangi with a melody of its own.

45 Minutes of Imrat's Best.......2001-02-10

Imrat Khan is the master of flashy and expressive surbahar alap. It can be said that he treats all ragas the same, but he has no equal in flashy and expressive surbahar technique and it makes for beautiful, gorgeous listening. Frankly, I can't stand sitar gat so I may not be qualified to comment on the last 30 minutes (Imrat picks up the sitar, his son (of all people) joins in on the tabla, I turn it off), but the opening 45-minute solo is pure Imratkhani firework surbahar at its best! Long live unaccompanied alap, say I!

Looked Better on Paper.......2001-02-11

This CD would appear to have a lot going for it. Imrat Khan is famous for his extreme-virtuoso surbahar technique; here he plays unaccompanied, surbahar only (no sitar, which he has never mastered to the same degree, and no tabla accompaniment from his son), in what appears to be an audiophile recording. But when you actually put it on, it manages to disappoint on point after point. Imrat's playing feels quite unimaginative, and the sound of the surbahar becomes thin and metallic, lacking the warm body that it has in real life and in most other recordings. Fans of Imrat will of course need this disc anyway, for it is not wholly without merit, but for the newcomer some disc in the Maestro's Choice or India Archive Music series will serve as a much better introduction to the sonic world of Imrat's surbahar.
