Editorial Reviews
. . .Chevan and Byrd take on Jewish and Gospel music with reverence, creativity, rhythmic punch, and plenty of heart and soul.
Product Description
"LET US BREAK BREAD TOGETHER-- Further Explorations of the Afro-Semitic Experience" continues the musical exploration that pianist Warren Byrd and bassist David Chevan began on their critically acclaimed 1998 album, AVADIM HAYINU--Once We Were Slaves (also available on amazon.com). On this new CD, their first studio recording, Chevan and Byrd expand their interpretations and explorations of music from the Jewish and African-American Sacred repertoire. The pieces include classic works such as "Soon I Will Be Done" and Eliyahu HaNavi" along with some more recent compositions from the Gospel and Jewish music worlds including a rollicking version of Dorothy Love Coates' "How Much More" and a haunting rendition of Nurit Hirsch's "Oseh Shalom."
The title of this CD, "Let Us Break Bread Together," comes from an African-American spiritual. The idea of breaking bread as a symbol of fellowship and community appears in both the Jewish and African-American sacred traditions. It is also said that this was one of the songs that was used by slaves hoping to escape to freedom and one can think of no more fitting title for this new album.
In many ways this recording is a much more fully realized artistic work than its predecessor. Their first album, Avadim Hayinu, marked an early stage in Chevan and Byrd's collaboration and was recorded live in concert without the opportunity for second takes. Since that first recording, the two men have given numerous concerts, workshops, and interfaith services. In the process their repertoire and understanding of these pieces has continued to expand. This new recording is a stronger artistic statement of a kind that can only come out of the experience of numerous live performances.
The album includes liner notes by noted scholar and author, Dr. Julius Lester, as well as an historical essay about the pieces on the recording that was compiled and written by David Chevan.
Since 1997 David Chevan and Warren Byrd have been giving sacred concerts of Jewish and African-American sacred music throughout the Northeast. Audiences of all faiths and races respond enthusiastically to the spontaneity, wit and intensity of the performances. Raina Goldberg, Director of Regional Student Services, Hillel Council of New England called their performance "a moving, inspiring program" and Dr. Peter S. Zaas, Professor of Religious Studies, Siena College adds that "I would like to indicate my appreciation for the educational quality-not to mention the musical quality-of the selections that David and Warren performed for our event . . . [The] comments before each selection were learned and engagingly presented and provided a striking example of how music can reach the mind as well as the soul."

I've learned a little since then. I've learned to ignore an artists political leanings, because they don't tell you much about quality (contrast the Republican South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone with the Democrat Robert Redford). I've also learned to (sometimes) listen to the recommendations of friends. And well, after a friend heard me laud Reneé Fleming, Kathleen Battle, and Leontyne Price, she told me I needed to try Jessye Norman. So I did.
Jessye Norman here offers here own takes on many of the most-loved (i.e. trite) pieces in the religio-classical tradition. She renders one of my own favorites, "O Divine Redeemer", with great beauty. When other reviewers mention shivers on the spine, I can only nod. As a wonderful introduction to Ms. Norman, the great spirituals and hymns, or repudiation of foolish artistic discrimination, I highly recommend this CD.

The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

The rich-toned, musically elegant, always dignified contralto Marian Anderson (1897-1993) is probably best known as the first African-American to sing at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, but by the time she did (in the mid '50s), her once burnished, glorious voice was no longer at its best. Years before, when she was not permitted to sing in the Daughters of the American Revolution's Constitution Hall (or any other hall in the U.S. capital), she gave a concert in the open air, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, which was attended by press, dignitaries, and a crowd of more than 75,000. Much of her late work is well known--arias from Verdi's Un ballo in maschera, spirituals, and the like--but this CD also allows us to hear the voice when it was young--in the 1930s and '40s. One can almost hear Schubert's trout ("Die Forelle") dancing around in the water, and an aria by Scarlatti shows Anderson's coloratura abilities--the big voice could be scaled down to intimate, chamberlike proportions. She brings her intelligence and textual insights to other songs by Schubert and Brahms as well. This is a marvelous collection and a fine tribute to an American original. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
