5 out of 5 stars art of the groove.......2004-12-11

I am a high school violinist that got to be part of a master class with this group and they were amazing! I could listen to them for hours.

5 out of 5 stars This is not your mother's string quartet.......2003-10-20

I being a cellist myself found this inventive group amazing. I was privileged to work with them in a teaching environment and I believe that I was not the only one blown away. This traditionally looking quartet played music that would normally be played by brass groups. If you enjoy jazz and blues music with a different twist you'd love this album. If you have the chance to see them live don't miss your chance. I love this album.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly a decent CD.......2003-10-30

I wonder how many people saw the ad for this CD on TV and ordered it right away without looking further into the contents. Brightman? Bocelli? Pavarotti? Florez? Watson? All Three Tenors? All on one CD? Sounded like a winner in the ad. They don't mention the Main Title from Star Wars. Nor do they mention (even Amazon doesn't show it!), that Anne Sofie Von Otter's performance is actually a duet with Elvis Costello, who simply does not have the chops or vocal gifts that most of the other artists on this CD are blessed with. In fact, that song is positively dreadful, and it's all because of Costello's vocally-strained style. What the hell is he doing on this CD? The rest of this CD is generally fine, but certainly do not expect a CD full of classical music, and be prepared to skip song #2 every time you play the CD.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Where has the real Barbara gone?.......2006-03-25

Oh dear.

Oh no.

I am a firm admirer of Barbara Bonney's exquisitely radiant voice. I own many of her recordings, and consider her singing of Faurè's great sacred work to be unsurpassed. Her recordings of Wolf & Strauss Lieder, of Mendelssohn's Lieder, of Mozart's Lieder - just beautiful. Her Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier - perhaps the loveliest interpretation of that role ever sung. She is an enchanting Susannah; her Pamina is the best I've ever heard. Her album of American songs - perfectly sung, beautiful.

So what has gone amiss here?

I truly, truly, truly hope this is a one-off bad recording. I hope with all my heart that it is not a harbinger of what is to continue to happen in Barbara Bonney's voice. It's the first time in which this lovely singer has disappointed me - and done so with such resounding thoroughness.

The vowels are so horribly distorted in the first few songs and in some of the other tracks that I was unable to work out what she was singing. The distortion affected the timbre badly. The actual sound was different to anything I've heard emanate from Ms Bonney's throat before. The songs on this CD were sung with a "hammy" approach that, again, is not representative of anything previously sung by Barbara Bonney.

In short, I am not able to recommend this recording. I bought it without checking beforehand, because it's Barbara Bonney. I am concerned that in future I will need to hear samples before purchasing her new recordings.

Please let this be an unrepresentative recording. Please let the Barbara the world has long loved appear again to delight us.

After making his name with the Jam--at least in England, where their post-Kinks, Brit-centric lyrics; mod appeal; and blend of punk and soul sounds made them stars--and then nearly losing it with the Style Council, Paul Weller reemerged in 1992 with a self-titled album. Since then he's released four studio albums (and one live set, the British import Live Wood); Modern Classics is a democratic collection, choosing three tracks from Paul Weller, four tracks from each of the rest, and adding one new single, "Brand New Start," for good measure. There's not a loser in the lot, but the remarkable thing to note here is the coherence of this collection: Weller's mature rock and love of classic soul has resulted in a sound that's remained remarkably consistent over the course of the 1990s. There's plenty more that could've been included--his cover of "Sexy Sadie" and the touching "Has My Fire Really Gone Out?" just for starters--which simply means there are plenty of reasons to mine his catalog after Modern Classics whets your appetite. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars Setting Son's finest.......2002-09-20

After a shamefully long hiatus I have rediscovered the splendour of this album which has been criminally neglected. In all of his guises with the Jam, Style Council and on his tod, Woking's finest Setting Son has cemented himself in the pantheon of great British singer/songsmiths of his or any other generation. If you haven't got this CD by now then you must have had taste-bypass surgery. If Wild Wood, You Do Something To Me and...well, every other track doesn't raise the hairs on the back of your neck and float your boat, I suggest checking for a pulse. Buy it. Yesterday.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!.......2001-06-11

I got into Paul Weller by listening to Oasis. I noticed that he played lead guitar in 'Champagne Supernova' and I also heard Noel Gallagher talking about Paul Weller, so I decided to buy this cd and see how it was. The first time I listened to the cd I loved it. It doesn't sound like Oasis, but it is very good. Some of my favorites on the cd are: Out Of The Sinking, Sunflower, You Do Something To Me, Brand New Start, Broken Stones, and the mellow Wild Wood. Now I want to go out and buy the rest of his cds! It's a shame Paul Weller isn't big here in the States. Music like this deserves to be recognized all around the world! I definitely recommend this wonderful masterpiece!

4 out of 5 stars A means to an end.......2000-02-10

The only reason Weller agreed to this album was as a final get out of his contract with GO! Discs. It's not the finest example of his work (see 'As you lean into the light' on 'Heavy Soul') but there are admittedly some classic tunes. Try not jumping around to 'Changingman' or crying into your beer with 'You do something to me'. There is, however, some fairly lightweight material on this album which are by no means his best and not a clear indication of his work. This should have been called 'The Singles Collection' cos that's what it is.

5 out of 5 stars Classics they are!.......2000-01-18

I only really got into Paul Weller again recently, and I would say this album sums up the best of his stuff. If you have heard one or two of his songs and liked them, but are not sure which album to buy - This is the one! Songs like 'Changing Man' and 'Brushed' really stand out as epics for me, but the whole album is packed with quality stuff, you really feel like you have got your moneys worth with this man.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD - worth the investment.......2005-02-26

I've seen this CD for years at various "community" retail stores selling for significantly more than the amazon prices listed. I purchased it primarily for the Viola Wills and Jimmy Ruffin tracks that I was familiar with.

The positive surprise are the top rate mixes and track#9 Looking at you. Definitely a good addition for anyone raised in the late 70's who understands the whole NYC/Fire Island connection and experience.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific CD by a DJ Master!.......2004-12-15

The DJ, Michael Fierman, has magnificent taste and through his music mixing skills he manages to recreate that peculiar paradise of Fire Island Pines, which entrances all who have experienced it, gay and straight males alike. (Although the straight guys do clutch rather fiercely to their girlfriends!)

Like Fire Island Pines itself, the music exudes a type of tropical, urban sexuality.

I particularly enjoyed the last track, Souvenirs by Voyage, a glorious disco hit from the 70s. The songwriters appear to have been French, and indeed the song seems to be a gleeful combination of camp and high romance, at which the French are so adept.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best dance compilations.......2003-02-01

This really is a great compilation, well-mixed and with a wide variety of classic cuts. If you never spent a night at The Saint in NYC and don't know this long, building Jimmy Ruffin mix, God Bless Ya! It is the epitome of morning music. From older to newer cuts, all maintain a great energy in this superlative mix. Throw it on in the car, loud, windows open, and take off!

4 out of 5 stars The Fire Island Pines' Survivors' Soundtrak - Indispensable!.......2003-01-11

If you've never read Andrew Holleran's DANCER FROM THE DANCE, or taken the ferry from Sayville NY to revel in the bacchanalia at Fire Island' Pines or Cherry Grove, buy this CD anyway. To quote Holleran, "The next song turned their bones to jelly and left them on the dance floor with heads back, eyes nearly closed, in the ecstasy of saints..." Don't miss this sublime collection designed for any disciple of pleasure.

2 out of 5 stars A Slight Improvement Over Vol. 3.......2006-08-30

Although an improvement over Vol.3 and with a new DJ this 4th edition in the Fire Island Classics CD's falls far short of the original Fire Island Classics and does not even compare to Vol. 2 which at least had classics on Disc 1. I wonder why the people over at Centaur still use the word classics in Vol. 3 & 4. Although this CD contains songs from the mid 90's an improvement from Vol. 3 which was produced in I think 2001 and featured music from that year it still does not capture the music most people thimk of when hearing the word classics in a CD title. To me this means late 70's to early 80's music.

The Turtle Island String Quartet has always been known for stretching stylistic and instrumental limits. Despite several personnel changes, its adventurous spirit of exploration is intact, and the baritone violin, that extraordinary hybrid instrument introduced by Darol Anger, is now being played by David Balakrishnan. The program on this disc has a Latin American orientation, with influences of Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, and the Caribbean, as well as African rhythms and American jazz. The pieces are all written or arranged by members of the group; their guest, the virtuoso clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera, contributes two compositions.

The playing is splendid. When string players make their instruments sound like saxophones, guitars, slap-basses, drums, and castanets, string quartet fans tend to get a bit uneasy, but these musicians can also sound like a real string quartet capable of producing a mellow, beautiful tone as well as every imaginable color effect, like ponticello, pizzicato, and barriolage. Moreover, the conversational give-and-take between them is in the best chamber music tradition. The slow pieces have a lilting, songful lyricism; the fast ones jump, dance, and run around brilliantly. To a classically oriented listener, the least convincing numbers are those based on classical pieces, like "Girl from Pathetique," frankly inspired by Tchaikovsky, and "Schizo Grosso," supposedly inspired by Beethoven. "A Night in Tunisia" is a showpiece for the clarinetist and he plays it to the hilt. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars They Are All Good!.......2003-04-09

Danzon is an excellent record! I have been listening to TISQ since they began in the eighties. They are supurb musicians all the way around. Their use of the standard emsemble string quartet seems to get brighter and more astounding with each record. A good example of the versitility of the band is heard with Girl From Pathetique. They stretch their range here and take it a little bit outside. The whole CD is consistent, masterfully arranged and performed. If you have heard this band, this one might be a good place to start. Having Paquito D'Rivera is an extra, EXTRA bonus. I keep hoping they will get the attention they deserve. Great spin!

4 out of 5 stars A Runner Up To Vol. 1.......2006-08-30

I would have given Vol. 2 5 stars if they stuck with the classics in Disc 2 but even with that it still is worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars It's like being at the Pavillion.......2001-05-08

It's 6:30 a.m. You have just spent your entire Saturday night dancing at the Pavillion. You are walking down Fire Island Boulevard back to your house in the Pines with what has to be the most-beautiful guy in the world. There's not a care in the world as the sun rises on another gorgeous Sunday out on the Island. And there's a song stuck in your head; a fun, happy, up-beat song that makes you want to keep dancing forever. A song that makes you remember this moment where everything is completely perfect. A song that makes you feel proud of who you are.

This CD has that song.

5 out of 5 stars "The White Party Album, Nothing but big room classics!".......1999-12-07

DJ David Knapp, of Roxy, Limelight, Twilo and Salvation fame, injects the CD with high energy high quality dance music. The ultra filtered super funky TESTIFY by M People kicks of this compilation. SO HI by Peak featuring Beverly Houston shines on track 3. Listen for the buildups, breakdowns and drumrolls and collect 10 points. Track 5, the ultra moody, minimalistic house/trance/progressive gem entitled 9pm TILL I COME by ATB thumps! Freestyle fans, no worries, Judy Torres is back with OUT HERE ON MY OWN. Sing along with me

"Sometimes I wonder Where I've been Who I Am . . . Out here on my own"

You'll also find MOMENTS by Noisemaker and WHENEVER THERE IS LOVE by Donna Summer and Bruce Roberts. The White Party, Anniversary Edition, a celebration of dance music!

4 out of 5 stars "This album gives me fever!".......1999-12-07

Are you a child of the disco era? Did you miss the disco era completely but do you dig the music? Look no further cause Centaur & Michael Fierman delivers the goods. Mickey serves up some delicious disco on disc one of this two CD scorcher. France Joli's COME TO ME pumps its disco synth finest, sing along with me

"And I love you And I want you And I need you And I want you Come to me . . . . "

Jackie Moore's THIS TIME BABY, track 2, got that 70's flavor. Listen for the bells in the intro. (Ring MY bell baby!) But Fierman digs in the crates and serves up fabulous disco on track 3, YOU MAKE ME FEEL (MIGHTY REAL). If you don't like track 6 by Marlene Shaw, you must at least dig the salacious title TOUCH ME IN THE MORNING. Donna Summer fans, listen for her delightful MacArthur Park. Finally, Fierman sets the roof on fire with Gloria Gaynor's I WILL SURVIVE. I know you know the words:

First I was afraid I was petrified Kept thinkin I could never live Without you by my side

Disc two grooves even harder than the first with Paris Red's GET WIT ME, a subtle 4/4 groove with a haunting background. Other top tracks you'll find: Cevin Fisher's YOU GOT ME (BURNIN' UP) and the song of the summer, Pete Heller's BIG LOVE.

5 out of 5 stars Popular English language songs of Hawaii.......2004-10-29

These are the English language songs most visitors love and associate with Hawaii. It is a collection of the songs most requested by guests at the hotels on Maui and the Big Island where George worked for many years.

My favorite is "My Little Grass Shack" where he goes into an old 78 record style of singing.
