Jesus "Chuchito" Valdés Jr. is a third-generation pianist in one of the most distinguished musical families from his homeland of Cuba. He currently lives in Cancun, Mexico, and tours regularly with his Afro-Cuban Latin-jazz ensemble. Encantado is his first album as a leader and it features the Australian-born, Chicago-resident Laksar Reese on saxophones and flute. Three covers, including John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" and Billy Strayhorn's "Impressions of 'Take the A Train'," join six originals. The Valdés-Reese number "Andariego" shows this tight and percussive ensemble to be as dazzling as any Latin band currently working. Trumpet player Tito Carillo joins Reese for pristine melodic excursions over the alternately fiery and subtle drums, congas, and percussion. Solid Nu-Jazz and House.......2006-11-10

Duran Y Garcia are a group off of Irma, a popular label in Italy. Irma's the label behind the Sister Bossa series, Mo Plen series, Irma on Canvas, the "Sex & the City" soundtracks and several others. They've also helped release works by artists like Gazzara, Dom Um Romao, Joao Deodato, Soul Quality Quartet, Ithamara Koorax, Montefiori Cocktail and loads more. Lounge, bossa and nu-jazz are their specialty but they'll also dabble in older jazz sounds too as you can see in their extensive catalog. Duran & Garcia fit the mold pretty well.

I have to admit - this album won't grab everyone but it had some pretty good tracks here and there that made it onto top shelf compilations. It starts out with a heavily sampled/electronically laced track "Xtra Electric Beat" and from there you're given an idea of the sound. That's followed up with a pretty cool, laid back cut titled 'Heavy Piano' which is one of those songs that makes the occasional bigger comp. Good piano, consistent, basic rhythm... a nice track. It's followed up with "Round Midnight" (not "Round about Midnight"), a track that featured on one of the Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe's a few years ago. Great bounce, great samples - a good tribute to some of the older jazz with a bit of a swing to it. Another song that stood out was "African Night" which was loaded with a neat blend of African influence but overlayed with modern latin house ambiance.

The downside is that IMO those are really all the highlights of the album and I'm hard pressed to say that even those tracks are timeless. I've had this album for a few years and just never got into it until for whatever reason, "Heavy Piano" was stuck in my head. This album isn't bad, it's just not great either. I think if you enjoyed The Dining Rooms latest you might like this. I'd recommend Buscemi's "Our Girl in Havana" over it though - you'll like that one if you enjoy this. Be sure to also check out a few of the nu-jazz comps out there too like the Des Pres Cafe series.
