Koko Taylor's second Alligator album from 1978 features eight blues standards and one self-composed number. As the title implies, the tempo is up. Subtle nuances give way to raw power. There's a remake of Taylor's only major R&B hit, "Wang Dang Doodle," amid like-minded floorshakers ("Let the Good Times Roll," "Spoonful," "Hey Bartender," and "You Can Have My Husband,") The band is very much in tune with the stated goals, and the solos are short and to-the-point. It has to be said that this music works better in concert than on record, but Taylor's protean energy goes a long way toward compensating for the inherent sterility of records. --Colin Escott

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE BLUES.......2007-04-30

Koko Taylor is a living legend! The blues has been so commercialized and copied that we often do not recognize it in its essential forms. Koko Taylor is an earth-shaking embodiment of the blues tradition. She is the real deal. Straight up without a chaser. Get this album wherever you can find it and listen to it over and over. Koko Taylor will heal your soul and give you a spiritual education in living in the world. When I listen to her version of "Let the Good Times Roll" I don't want to hear anybody else sing it again. You will travel to some pretty deep and scary places listening to her sing "Walking the Backstreet" but you will emerge emboldened to live and love life to the fullest!

1 out of 5 stars good but not great.......2007-01-12

This CD was recorded in the late 1970s and featured a veteran band. The sound quality is a little thin and has less bottom than her more recent recordings. Song quality is spotty. A good CD not one of her best

4 out of 5 stars Great, straight-ahead blues and R&B.......2005-06-04

There is barely a single weak moment on Koko Taylor's 1978 LP.
Sure, her remakes of "I'm A Man" (as "I'm A Woman") and "Wang Dang Doodle" are less than innovative, but everything else is just plain great. And Taylor is backed by an excellent little combo which includes guitarists Johnny Moore and Sammy Lawhorn, saxist Abb Locke, and the legendary Joe "Pinetop" Perkins on the piano.

Nobody can really cover Howlin' Wolf and get away with it, but Koko Taylor does as good as anybody on a really solid "Spoonful", and her swaggering renditions of Mel London's "Cut You Loose" and the saucy Irma Thomas-single "You Can Have My Husband" are just magnificent.
"Let The Good Times Roll" and "Hey Bartender" still pop up on her set list today, and the self-penned slow blues "Please Don't Dog Me" is one of Taylor's best original songs.
You really can't go wrong with any of Taylor's excellent recordings for Alligator records, but this one is as good as any of them, a must-have for fans, and casual listeners should find a lot to love as well. "The Earthshaker" is one great, well-arranged blues record with plenty of highlights and virtually no let-downs.

5 out of 5 stars Koko don't stop singing.......2005-01-18

Koko Taylor can sing. Starting off with Let The Good Times roll. That lets you know that this record is just getting started. Then with wIllie dixons Spoonful.Next Little Miltons Walking the Back streets.hey Bartender,Then I'm a Woman then irma Thomas's You can have My husband then Please don't dog me and finally she ends with her signature. whoooo All of those songs I just listed were THE BOMB. Oh wait a minute all of those songs I just listed was the whole album. Koko singing with all of her energy. Lord if you could hear Koko now. Koko really defines her self with this record.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Koko.......2002-07-07

If you want one album to introduce new listeners to Koko Taylor or Blues done by women this is the one. It contains her best known songs done very well. The album is a little shorter than it could be - I'd have liked to see "Sure had a wonderful time last night", "Come to Mama" or "I can love you like a woman" in there. But it rocks. And so does The Queen.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Japanese Rock.......2007-05-10

You can't help but love a band that dedicates their debut album to the great Y&T and even names themselves after one of the band's albums. In their own unique way, Japanese band Earthshaker follows in Y&T's footsteps, creating their sound at a time when the very idea of heavy metal music was still being developed. Unlike their more metal-minded countrymen in Anthem, Earthshaker has a slightly bluesy, more melodic hard rock sound that owed more to the American West Coast rock style than the NWOBHM.

1983's self-titled album is the first offering from Earthshaker. It's a blistering set of hard rock songs (plus the ballad I Feel All Sadness) that features some killer guitar work. The vocals are a bit uneven, thanks in part to lyrics that alternate between English and Japanese. The production quality isn't great either. Still, if you're looking for classic Japanese hard rock, Earthshaker is definitely a must-have.

Fans of Loudness and Anthem will definitely enjoy Earthshaker, as should fans of Y&T and other classic hard rock bands.

NOTE: The 1999 Japanese import version of Earthshaker features digitally remastered sound. It doesn't completely eliminate the flaws in the original production, but it definitely helps. If you're going to the trouble of tracking this album down, you might as well go for the best sounding version.

5 out of 5 stars Earthshaker, one of the great Rock band from 80s.......2007-02-19

I must agreee with Taka's email. There are many Japanese Rock bands, to name a few from Earthshaker, Loudness, Bow Wow, Anthem, and many others that have been underated. Furthermore, there are more bands in Southern island of Japan with great bands like Murasaki, 8 Ball, and very talented local bands. If you have not toured Japan then perhaps this will be a good time to check out some great musicians because market in Japan such as GIT, ESP, and many other music-college are bringing in more shredding guitarists! Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, and rest of the popularity are now booming with music crave! Earthshaker is absolutely one of the great 80s band if you haven't checked them out, but it now! Very melodic and power ballads, however, fast-bone shredding tone such as "More" and "Tokyo" are very recommended with great guitarist "Shara"

5 out of 5 stars Japanese metal band that even Japanese don't know.......2005-05-23

Hard rock or metal rock music is famous in Japan like German or U.S.A. But I think that Japanese h&m bands have a little different taste for the world, that is, their sounds are not always just roudy sounds, by including Japanese unique melodies into the sounds, Japanese metal or heavy rock genre have beautiful melodies. If some foreigners may know about them, a legendary band of X (X-Japan) certified the factors in fact.

But in Japanese music scene, such genre rock has not gotten enough music citizenships. Still, the most famous music genre has been pop-rock in Japan. In the mean, X-Japan may be only metal-band who got the victory in Japan music scene (as I know, the metal band that got single-chart no1 in Japan will be X only).

By the way, the age when the genre of metal rock was born was about early 80', such opinions are said often. And there is certain birthplace that the genre was born, too. That is Oosaka, Kansai region. Maybe foreigners will not know about the place, even if know Tokyo, metropolitan Japan. If I compare them with U.S.A, that may be Boston for N.Y, that is, Osaka have unique and mysterious atmosphere.

The Earth-shakers who I introduce just now is not a major band than X-Japan, so there are not many Japanese who know about them. But between the core and hot fans who have deep knowledge about J-rock, this band is being appreciated as the great band that have splendid playing techniques and beautiful melodies. I think so. In the mean of the band that have great techniques but is not known for Japanese, Earth-shakers may be the same as Show-ya, girls-metal band that Japan should be proud of.

Anyway, if you are interested in Japanese hard or metal rock fans, you will have the value that listen to Earth-shaker sounds.

Thank you for reading poor English.

This is one of the best Earthshaker recordings. Although recorded in L.A. this was only released in Japan (with Japanese lyrics). Like its predecessor Midnight Flight sound, songs and playing are timeless. This one contains the anthem "Arigato Kimini" (one of the best ballads ever written) and "The Night We Had", which is also a classic. "Nagareta Akaichiwa Naze!" is another stand out track. FIVE BIG STARS!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Their Best Album Ever - from a long time fan.......2005-07-02

I have evry one of their albums (yes I mean LPs - Wax) from the 70's until mid 90's. This album is by far my favorite, I even bought an Import almost 15 years ago so I could have it on CD. I have seen them 15 times throughout the U.S. and Europe. I was at the show for the Y & T Live (farewell concert in SJ) I'm glad they didn't hang it up.
OK back to the review, From the very first song there is an attitude that sets it apart in 1981 - a little different then their past efforts, a little harder and crisper. Hungry and Dirty Girl are blazers fist pumpoing songs, but the jewel of the CD is Rescue Me, like Forever off of Black Tiger a pure Rock Anthem that stands the test of time. If you buy this CD do it for this song alone. Young and tough, Hurricane, Let Me Go, and Knock You out transcend nicely into the closer - I believe in you - it was the prototype for the power ballads that would surface a few years down the line. Overall a fantastic Album - not as comercially successful as Black Tiger and Mean Streak, but songwise a better package. As for the three discs, there is no band in a three year span that put out a better package of songs except for Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath in the early 70s - nobody did it in the 80s - not even Van Halen - they had some weak songs on Women and Children First - not nearly as good as VHI and VHII. I hope this helps. Die Hard Y & T Fan. Support them when you can, they still tour and Meniketti is always out, go see him he still rocks.

4 out of 5 stars lives up to its title.......2004-08-14

In my mind "Earthshaker" is Y&Ts finest effort. Each songs cranks like a hard rock band should, loud and nasty. Much maligned for their later 'sell-out' period, Earthshaker captures the band while they were lean and hungry. Dave Mineketti(?)lays down some truly mean licks and the rest of the band delivers on their end. Earthshaker brings the band's best licks, with "Black Tiger" coming in at a close 2nd, but the licks got less tough throughout the years as Meniketti(?) changed songwriting styles to a more power ballad type as chart sucess dictated. This release brings back a ton of memories for me from a time when nothing was more important than girls, cars, and tasty hard-rocking riffs.

      4 out of 5 stars It's a rock attack.......2004-02-17

"Earthshaker" is often regarded as Y&T's finest effort. This album was released back in 1981, and it has a slightly different musical approach that separates it from the two previous albums ("Yesterday and today" 1976 & "Struck down" 1978) and goes more in the same fashion as the following "Black tiger". I think it's fair to say that almost every Y&T album has it share of excellent songs but it's mainly up till 1984's "In rock we trust" the band showed real creativity and energy.

"Earthshaker" is a furious rock attack and if you like "Black tiger" and "Mean streak" you shouldn't hesitate buying this album. I can honest say that there is not a single bad tune on this solid album, and with songs like "Let me go", "Rescue me", "Dirty girl" among others, this is a real rock classic from Y&T.

5 out of 5 stars Registering 9.4 on the richter scale rockin the Bay Area.......2002-07-28

Yes, they are from the San Francisco Bay area. This along with in rock we trust are y t 's two best cd's. Even the least of the songs young and tough and dirty girl are good songs. Knock you out, hungry for rock, shake it loose, and let me go are great songs and none of them are on the best of cd oh, say like the tracks hurricane, I beleve in you, and dirty girl and rescue me. Definitely deserves to of have been voted one of the best hard rock albums of all time..not nearly well known as some other cd's..say like ac/dc 's back in black which they supported on this particular tour, but every bit as good. Worth the money and shakes it loose like an earthquake

      5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece: the ultimate Y&T nostalgia recording!.......2002-01-07

While Black Tiger is a close second, Earthshaker demonstrates what this foursome was capable of. A truely remarkable collection of songs, there are NO SLEEPERS on this one.
(Like Mean Streak, *Yawn*) If you have the original vinyl pressing on A&M and are looking for better sonics, don't bother! (if your analog rig is up to snuff, that is) If you no longer own the LP and want to feel like you are 16 again (As I was when it was released) then GET ONE! It is as awesome as you remember! Well worth the price!

SOP is a great band out of the Unknown Dakota. Carter and Dave and Hat are also great football players, and well my bro sucks anyways... And the whole band is hot too... and i gotta say, if you can get on their "good list" you can be one of the coolest ppl...

5 out of 5 stars SOP is for me!!.......2001-02-22

Though I know the guys of SOP, that doesn't affect my judgement of this product. When one realizes that the band did this EP, basically out of its own pocket, it makes it that much more amazing!! This CD has GREAT sound, GREAT music, GREAT dynamics. The one thing I like best about SOP, is the fact that they honestly do not sound like anyone else. In this era of cookie cutter music (one band does something, gets popular, then everyone else has to do that same thing) SOP is a breath of fresh air. Loud, aggressive, and damn proud of it is the best way to describe SOP. I've had a copy of "EARTHSHAKER" for over 3 years, and it still is in heavy rotation in my CD listening. I for one can't wait for their new CD due out around the end of March!!

4 out of 5 stars Do you like music that just kicks you in the rump?.......2000-11-26

I do. And that is what this album does. But don't take my word for it. Check out the sound samples. Don't miss track 4, one of my favorites, "The Lowdown". The faint of heart need not apply. These guys play heavy, driving, rythyms that just kick and then they'll bust into a half-time groove and Carter will hit a pinch harmonic on just the right note. Awesome. The instruments have great tone and the album is mixed very well and it is very punchy. The band has a new album coming out soon and I'm going to buy it as soon as it does. I give this album "4 stars" only because it wasn't a full-length album!
