The Bombay-born tabla master and percussionist Trilok Gurtu has become a fixture on the pop- and world-music scenes, performing with Pat Metheny, Gilberto Gil, and Bill Laswell. On this CD--produced by the famed Beninese Afropop superstar and Level 42 cofounder Wally Badarou--Gurtu forms a rhythmic rice-and-curry meal flavored with funk, raga, bhangra, and juju sonic seasonings. Backed by vocalist Sabine Kabongo (formerly of Zap Mama) along with bass, guitar, and sitar, Gurtu successfully merges the Aryan/Dravidian ancestral drum lines of his homeland with the processional pulsations of West Africa. The leader is joined on this quest by the continent's brightest stars: Benin's Angelique Kidjo lends her Fon-language contralto on the hypnotic "A Friend." Mali's Salif Keita Afro/Arabic Mande vocals christen the tantric tone poem "Have We Lost Our Dream?" Wasis Diop of Senegal beautifully complements Gurtu's textured tabla playing on "Passing By," while South Africa's Jabu Khanyile puts his township tones to the synthesized kalimba sounds on "Ingoma." Gurtu also includes his trans-Indian compatriots Mryudula and Bharat Desai on "Dance with My Lover." Chris Dilford of the rock group Squeeze wrote the lyrics to the anthemic "Ola Bombay." In Trilok Gurtu's hands, world beats are transformed by his silky subcontinental swing.

Emotional, ethereal, and evocative, "Immortal Memory" is a timeless album of extraordinary transcendence. Gerrard, formerly of Dead Can Dance, won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award for the "Gladiator" score. She's also scored or contributed to "Heat", "Whalerider", "Ali", "The Insider", "Mission Impossible 2", "Black Hawk Down", and more. Patrick Cassidy is widely recognized as Ireland's most important classical composer and has released three acclaimed albums. Customer Reviews:
Spiritual History of Celtic Ireland.......2007-06-24
This is one of those CD's that keeps you guessing about its meaning. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, 2 solo CD's, & several movie theme CD's joins forces with Patrick Cassidy to create an antithetical sound scape of what in my interpretation maybe about the history of Celtic Spirituality on the island of Ireland.
The 1st song "The Song of Amergin" is about Amergin, a Celtic leader who according to legend is the 1st to set foot on Ireland to battle the "god's" for possession of the land.
The 2nd song "Maranatha" (Come Lord) maybe about Saint Patrick bringing Christianity to the Ireland or maybe the cry of the land to free itself from the ancient pagan gods.
The 3rd song "Amergin's Invocation" makes the final cleansing of the land which the 4th song "Elegy" mourns the death of the pagan gods.
The 5th song "Sailing to Byzantium" is the 1st form of Christianity to come to the Celtics. Historically the Celtic Christian church was semi-independent from Rome & took on a more Eastern Byzantine to almost Coptic Christian Mysticism that expressed the love of God & nature.
The 6th song is the most interesting on the CD; "Abwoon" is Aramaic for "Our Father" that Lisa Gerrard sings with a deep alto using the Aramaic language that Jesus used for his "How to Pray" prayer when he was on the Earth.
The 7th song "Immortal Memory" maybe about the universality of ancient Christianity or how God remembers all things? Or maybe this being the theme song is an overview of the rest of the songs?
The 8th song "Paradise Lost" maybe about the overtaking of the Celtic Church to conform to Roman Catholic doctrine & practice by Bishop Augustine 600 A.D. (not Saint Augustine of Hippo 400 A.D.) or about how modern Ireland has forgotten its true spiritual roots.
The 9th song "I Asked For Love" is plainly about getting the opposite from prayer until one just asks for God where he or she may receive freely.
The 10th song "Psallit In Aure Dei" is Patrick Cassidy main score from the words of Thomas of Celano, who was a disciple of & wrote a biography about Saint Francis of Assisi.
Try to come up with your own interpretation of this intriguing CD.
Well produced to bring out Lisa Gerrard's most unique singing style, but not as original as her 2 solo CD's "The Mirror Pool" & "Duality". Reading a few reviews below I agree that at times the music from this CD sounds like "Gorecki's 3rd Symphony" or something like Arvo Part to John Travener but it is done in good taste. Therefore a "4" is given for lack of originality.
Dark.......2007-03-17
Paradise Lost is darker than Hell itself; my stomach churns and writhes in knots every time I hear it. I love it.
Amazing album, haunting, and worth every penny for Paradise Lost alone. There are a few tracks that aren't very memorable, but all in all this is a five-star album.
Immortal Memory...Forgettable Melodies.......2006-05-10
Although these compositions are characterised by pleasing tonalities recorded in richly reverberant ambiance, they are altogether lacking with regard to melodic development or musical substance. There is nothing memorable about "Immortal Memory." Emotionally flat, this disc is positively dreary. This CD contains 57 minutes of excessively introspective, monotonous music that inspires nearly as much emotion as contemplating drying cement. An antidepressant medication may be necessary after listening. A disappointing addition to my musical library.
haunting yet empty.......2005-10-19
It is hard not to reference or compare Lisa Gerard's solo efforts to Dead Can Dance catalogue. I guess I was expecting something that would continue DCD tradition. The first thing that struck me was that the dead could really dance to the DCD music but they appear to be haunted and sorry ghosts in "Immortal Memory". The music is truly mournful. There is nothing wrong with mournful and haunting program for a dics, but I found those emotions falling little flat in Lisa Gerard's production. Her music sounds very ambitious but never achieves the drama and "goose bumps" effect of Gorecki's III Symphony (Symphony of Sorrow Songs) or Avro Part's "Fratres". Maybe this comparison is not fair, after all the latter two are classical music's contemporary masters, but I get an impression that Lisa Gerard's aim was equally serious. Maybe she set her goals too high.
Ethereal beauty.......2005-07-29
This album is perfect for drifting off to sleep, or for a relaxing meditation session. The music is very much like a soundtrack (similar in feel to Gerrard's "Whale Rider" soundtrack work). The music is orchestral and ethereal with Gerrard's haunting vocals. She has one of the most distinctive voices in modern music and her voice is in top form here.
So why 4 stars as opposed to 5? It is almost too mellow. I really prefer the greater diversity of sounds on her previous solo efforts. This album is great in certain scenarios and a wonderful album to relax too, but somehow it leaves me wanting just a little more. All in all, though it really is lovely and the perfect way to wind down and relax in swirls of beauty in today's crazy fast-paced world.

"What if Marco Polo had owned tape recorder?" This intriguing concept is raised in the liner notes to this impressive two-CD set, which wanders along ancient Asian trade routes known as the Silk Road. The first disc, Masters & Traditions, deals with formal styles performed by and for sophisticated connoisseurs. Meanwhile, the music on Minstrels and Lovers is played by amateurs who are part of daily life and thus reach a wider audience. The imaginary caravan passes through Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Afghanistan, encountering nomads, mystics, and bards along the way. The instruments are scratchy, pungent, and/or serene, while the singers weave a potent spell out of a millennium's worth of slow-changing rural and urban vistas. In the opening essay, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the project's artistic director, pleads for intercultural communication and empathy. This compilation provides an exotic, brave, entertaining first step in that direction. --Christina Roden
Album Description
What if Marco Polo had owned a tape recorder? And what if his epic travels along the Silk Road had taken place not at the end of the 13th century, but at the beginning of the 21st? Far-fetched conjectures to be sure, but our compilation The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan offers a glimpse of the rich musical life that an intrepid and curious traveler like Marco Polo might find in the lands of the Silk Road today.
Customer Reviews:
Be a Marco Polo of music.......2007-05-06
Its rather difficult to review this in the regular like it/don't like it way. This is the endemic music of the people along the silk road the runs across Asia. Some of it sounds very strange compared to Western music, like study for an Anthropology course, while some of it very enjoyable.
Northern Exposure.......2007-03-30
This anthology is an outstanding survey of the northern section of the so-called Silk Road, taking us from Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iran, through Uzbekistan, southern Siberia, China, and finally to Japan, but not in order, as the CD set is organized instead by category of musical function and the localities seem random. Although there are significant gaps in the styles, and I particularly miss the sweet lyric songs of Kyrgyz women, the powerful mugham voice of Qasimov of Azerbaijan, and more examples of the kylkobyz fiddle of Kzakhstan, the set provides a fine introduction of the musics of inner Asia and particularly the instruments. A glossary of instruments is provided, but unfortunately their images are often lacking. All the examples are short by necessity, when many traditional pieces are far longer in duration. For the uninitiated, it will take repeated listening to distinguish the uniqueness of timbre and rhythm from one land to the other; but this similarity of sounds helps demonstrate the role of the trade routes in sharing instruments and styles, such that the Japanese biwa, the Chinese pipa, and the Arabic oud all are related. If you want to attain some feel for the musics of inner Asia, then certainly these disks will meet the requirement.
Sparse Great Songs.......2007-03-29
Some of the pieces on the first cd are "take away" great.
The secound cd is ...
I enjoy "world culture" music and sound however, the secound cd in this double collection was a monotonous let down.
The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.......2007-01-03
Thank you for this part of my research on Central Asia.
Like an Exotic Journey.......2005-08-06
This is the ultimate World Music collection. It features authentic sounds from vastly diverse cultures, assembled in such a way that they don't clash, they flow along like a caravan journey. If you're looking for familiar tunes, this isn't for you. But if you'd like to expand your musical horizons, I highly recommend it.

A recording of the band's finest hour...........................2006-08-15
With the long-awaited return of Dino Valente to the band as singer and songwriter, Quicksilver Messenger Service marked perhaps its finest hour during the recording of this particular album. Unfortunately, Mr. Valente had been absent during the recording of the band's previous two studio albums, "Quicksilver Messenger Service" and "Shady Grove", and during the band's live concert recording, namely, the album, "Happy Trails." Problems with the law and a failed attempt to make it happen musically in New York City alone and also with QMS colleague, guitarist Gary Duncan, drew him away from the band for an extended period of time. The added absence of Gary Duncan prompted the rest of the band to ask Nicky Hopkins to join them during the recording of their second studio album. Nicky Hopkins was one of rock history's preeminent pianists, having had contributed his talent to many memorable albums by top artists, ranging from the Rolling Stones to the Who. There is no exception here, with Quicksilver Messenger Service, as evident on this particular album, and on the previous studio album, especially on the song entitled, "Edward, the Mad Shirt Grinder."
The band at this stage of its history also included a gifted guitarist by the name of John Cipollina whose style was quite unique--John Cipollina oftentimes used the tremolo bar on his solid-body Gibson while playing solos and also while playing as a counterpoint to the guitar work of fellow band member, Gary Duncan. A wonderful aspect of the band at this particular point in time was the fact that two of its members were capable of playing "true" lead guitar at any one time. Unfortunately, shortly after the recording of this album, John Cipollina left the band. He eventually formed the band, Copperhead.
Quicksilver Just for Love.......2006-02-24
I grew up in the Bay Area in the late sixties so I became very familiar with the "San Francisco" bands of that time and I seemed to enjoy many of the bands that never had "tremendous success". Quicksilver falls into that category and I have to admit they were among many of the groups of that area and time that had to be experienced live to know what they were really like and to see them at their best. That's not to say that I don't like their studio material because I do. This album was a new direction for Quicksilver with Dino Valenti returning after doing some time for a drug bust. While this may not be their strongest album I would have to say it's worth buying for the song "Fresh Air" which became a sort of an anthem of that time. This album and the one that followed "What About Me" are essential to any Quicksilver fan that is serious about what this band was about and wants to experience the magic of the music of that time and place. Some other bands worth looking into to get the flavor of that era: Moby Grape, Cold Blood, It's a Beautiful Day, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Malo, Hot Tuna, Tower of Power, The Youngbloods, Blue Cheer, The Blues Image, Eric Burdon & the Animals, and Country Joe and the Fish. They just don't make 'em like that anymore sorry to say.
Lost Gems.......2004-12-15
Certainly QMS represented the best of "Jam Rock" with their style of 2 guitar, point and counterpoint method of playing.Whether intentional or not they touched the very essence of classical music structure and connotation, which resulted in a musical conversation rather than merely a song. They gave a great effort on this album and it was well engineered
Best of the original Albums by QMS.......2004-09-06
I think this was the best QMS Albumb that was ever released. This Album had profound influnce upon my life when it was originally released and it is still one of my favorite Cd's to play. The guitar playing was profoundly original and creative for it's time, and so was the piano. Nicky Hopkins went on to play with the Rolling Stones.. I would say it has with stood the test of time too, still sounding unique, and undated... Quicksliver had some later Albums that had some pretty good suff on them, but none of the later work seemed to hold unity as well as this album did. There were a lot of bands putting out concept albums, at that time, where it wasn't just a culmanation of songs, but the whole Album was to be listened to at one sitting...That's what this Album is and was, I don't see that idea playing out as well in any other Quicksilver Album. May the memory of these great artists, who lived like there was no tomorrow live on...
timeless classic!.......2004-08-03
Quicksilver Messenger-one of THE best West-Coast bands ,of all time,No doubt!!!This -"Just for Love", made at a time when Dino Valenti's influence was great,as lead singer-/songwriter, is one of my personal favourites!!I just love this album-even more so on c.d.!They were one hot band -great drummer, great bass,GREAT lead guitarist(s),too!!Either love or hate Dino Valenti's voice/lyrics-i adored his fabulous voice, totally unique(his solo album STILL amazes me 35 years on)......So here we have Q.M.S. The American psychedelic movement was bound to produce unexpected progeny--including the 1970s, which began as a mainstream attempt to absorb the "free love," recreational drug use, and sartorial eccentricities of the previous decade. But there were parallel repercussions elsewhere in the world, and nowhere was this phenomenon more fascinating than in West Africa. As LPs became cheaper and readily available, local musicians began to incorporate the fuzz and wah-wah guitar vamps, cheesy organ riffs, blatting saxes, and fat, funky bass lines of sixties R&B plus Santana-influenced Latin rhythms and the extended, destination-free guitar solos typical of the San Francisco sound. These were not emulated by rote but freely adapted by younger Africans, mostly students, whose own acoustic traditions had already been transformed by exposure to urban technology. The resulting amalgams, whether they evolved in Benin, Nigeria, Gambia, Cote d'Ivoire, or Mali, remain incredibly lively, funny, inventive, and surprising. --Christina Roden

Neat Collection.......2006-12-16
I won't say this is the best "world music" CD I've ever heard, or even the best Luaka Bop production, but it is very good and very unusual. Let's say certainly well above average - as are the lengths of many of the songs. The music is hard to compare to anything else... maybe psychedelic reggae? Maybe not. Anyway, if you're broad-minded, musically speaking, chances are you'll like it, so buy it.
Love it love it love it love it.......2006-09-21
This is a great album. I bought the first week it came out and still have not tired of it a year and a half later. Get it! You will put its songs on mix tapes and people will think you're awesome for having found these rare but outstanding songs!
Funky and Original.......2006-08-10
This is a great CD. Even richer and more nuanced than I expected.
Real Music.......2006-04-19
This is the best 12 song compilation cd I've ever experienced in my life. Anyone who votes anything less than 5 star is obviously a cheap wad or doesn't know anything about music.
Funky For the Money.......2005-10-19
If you like funk, or rock, or jazz, or just love good music you will like this CD. It is like a mix between James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. Every song is amazing and they are all different. Sure you may not understand the language, but funk is international. Hands down worth the price.

Dance with me daughter of mine.......2007-06-27
We have been looking for this particular song for our daughter's upcoming wedding. It is perfect. We also really like the other songs on the CD. John McDermott has a wonderful smooth voice.
A Voyage with John McDermott.......2006-08-23
My husband and I are huge John McDemott fans and this is our favorite CD of all those we own. I purchased it for myself and my husband liked it so much he took my CD to play in his car so I had to buy myself another as I got tired of asking him for it back! Each song is unique and some like One Small Star are like poetry set to music. Of particular note is the beautifully done song Natives which has a haunting duet in French that is a favorite and sounds new and fresh each time we listen to it. The background music on this is fabulous and the musicians are all wonderful,as they are with each song on this CD as well. It's a delightful CD and one that we have not only listened to countless times but also given as gifts to friends and family.
Just OK.......2002-10-11
After reading the reviews for this CD I thought I would try a copy to get the song "Daughter of Mine"
It was an OK song but I found another song on (Amazon.com) that I liked much more for my father bride dance.
Its called "A Song For My Daughter"
The words to this song are much better and it was nice to get both a male and female version of "A Song For My Daughter" so it could be from my dad or mom. We used the male vocal and when dad and I danced everyone had tears in their eyes.

Love is a Voyage.......2002-10-05

Daughter of Mine.......2002-04-20
A must for any father who is about to see his daughter marry. "Daddy's Little Girl" is a song of the past.

Music From Other Lifetimes.......2007-07-28
I have been listening to Louis Hardin since 1974 when I was simultaneously introduced to MOONDOG and ALL GOOD MEN by Beaver & Krause - I think I must have used up all of my musical luck because nothing (including The Beatles, who are right up there next to God) has since resonated in me the way these two albums have. Hardin's unabashed musical honesty can be found but in two places, children and geniuses, and I think there must be a lot of both in Hardin. Each composition takes you on a different journey, if the listener has the courage to jump aboard; I always close my eyes, to be closer to the way the music was composed. I am particularly fond of his first album MOONDOG for a lot of reasons, but mostly I think because it was my introduction to a composer who has yet to meet his match, even within himself. As times change (and they inevitably will), other of his works will come to the fore and take their rightful place among the few that will always rise above all the rest.
This needs a more articulate review..........2005-12-10
To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

Customer Reviews:
BRILLIANT & MAGICAL VOCALS~BRAVO SHIRLEY BASSEY!!!.......2007-07-31
Shirley Bassey reached the peak of her vocal brilliance by the mid-seventies when these two great vocal masterpieces were released already being an International Superstar with sold-out venues around the world giving performances filled with wild standing ovations...this Legendary Diva still possesses that stunning voice and performing presence that is unmatched in the world of entertainment today being back on top of the charts in Europe and hopefully tired America radio will rise to the occasion but we won't hold our breath...
"Nobody Does It Like Me" is classic Bassey in an electic mix of great songs & unique orchestrations filled with stand-out performances such as the deeply emotional and brilliantly sung "I'm Not Anyone" composed by Paul Anka and Miss Bassey wrings every ounce of passion out of this great song with vocal brilliance that is awesome and memorable..."Davy" is a haunting duet with its composer Benard Igher while two motion picture theme songs, "The Trouble With Hello Is Goodbye" and "All That Love Went To Waste" should have had exposure as they are magnificent performances that would have been huge chart hits but somebody dropped the ball...a number of times unfortunately. Another chart hit possibility would have been a wondrous and definitive version of Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life"! Every song in "Nobody Does It Better" makes one a believer that the title is an accurate description of this great singer and this is only 1/2 of the collection!!!
"Love, Life And Feelings" is a true Bassey Masterpiece and the world tour for its release is a truly extraordinary and magical memory for us lucky ones who experienced this timeless legend in concert during this amazing time in her career...each song is a complete experience like a play with a beginning, middle & great ending with every song a standout! Never before has a Neil Sedaka song like "The Hungry Years" been such a riveting listening experience and "Born To Lose" is devastating in a way that nobody but Bassey could bring to the listener. By the time one gets into the since of grief experienced in "Alone Again (Naturally)" or the pathos that fill "Feelings", it is clear this is a true original classic singer who brings it all to the listener. Like any true great artist, Shirley Bassey saves the best for last and "If I Never Sing Another Song" is a haunting and stunning finale that always brings the entire audience out of their seats screaming for MORE!!!!! Don't miss this tremendous collection as these two lp's are two of the greatest vocal masterwork's ever made! Bravo Shirley!!!
Bassey at her very best!.......2007-01-30
This excellent 2CD release from BGO features two Shirley Bassey albums originally released in 1974 and 1976. Both released for the first time on CD!. The first "Nobody Does It Like Me" was recorded in the USA following the popularity of Shirley's previous album and single "Never Never Never". This album was designed to place Shirley in the lucrative US adult contemporary market and results in a different sound to her UK recordings around the same period. Shirley'e voice is at its very best, and the overall production is pulled back somewhat compared with her previous UA albums. Now 30 years later, this album sounds better than ever, and listeners can't help but wonder why it wasn't a bigger success. Standout tracks include "Davy" a duet with the songs composer; Bernard Ighner and Paul Anka's "I'm Not Anyone". The album closes with Shirley's beautiful version of Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life". Next is the album "Love, Life and Feelings" from 1976 which placed Shirley firmly back in the UK charts. This album peaked at number 13 and enjoyed a 5 week run in the charts. There is not a single track on this album that does not deserve 5 stars, but for the record you will find many songs associated with Dame Shirley that (strangely) don't appear on many compilations including, "What I Did For Love", "Born To Lose", "Natali" and "If I Never Sing Another Song". Both albums have been expertly re-mastered by the experts at BGO and have never sounded better!

Some Of Hag's Best.......2007-08-04
Merle's genius really shines through in these two albums. It's good to see both of them on one CD. (This one is not easy to find. I've had the LPs for quite awhile.) The sound quality seems exceptional to me. Fans of Haggard should buy this right away. If they've never heard it, they WILL love it.

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

2 classic Hag albums from 1976.......2003-09-09
In 1976 Merle was nearly at the end of his long association with Capitol Records. "My love affair with trains" featured some great songs. Merle hopped many a boxcar in his youth and those experiences were the stuff of legend. Also included here is the "Roots of my Raising" album which features the hit title track and the Bob Wills favorite "Cherokee Maiden". Merle Haggard is that rare artist who has made every song in nearly every album worth listening to. I highly recommend this one!!
