Album Description
Many of the chants and mantras in this album are written by Guru Nanak, the First Guru of the Sikhs who lived from 1469 to 1538. Guru Nanak traveled on foot with his disciple, Mardana, throughout much of India and other countries in Asia. Mardana came from a long lineage of master musicians. Mardana played the rebeck, a simple stringed instrument of Persian origin. Guru Nanak would settle in an area perhaps under a tree, or by a river, and begin to sing with Mardana accompanying him. People would come from miles away attracted by the pure sound current and soon many people would be gathered around them in absolute rapture and love. Guru Nanak's songs have amazing rhythm and poetry, and his message speaks to the Soul.
One of Guru Nanak's most well known gifts to our planet is the sacred composition called Japji. It is recited daily by hundreds of thousands of Sikhs throughout the world today. Japji has forty "pauris" or stanzas. In the words of Yogi Bhajan, " Each pauri addresses different aspects of the relationship between man and God and each has a specific power and gift that comes with it. The particular power of each pauri in Japji lies in the combination of sounds which creates the chemical and magnetic change in and around the being who recites it."
The awareness imparted in these stanzas is simple, practical, and uplifting for anyone on a spiritual path. Japji means meditation of the Soul. It is for all people, as this was Guru Nanak's way.

the description is interesting, but nowhere to find a listening sample. wont buy a cat in a box! more customer service please!
Very disappointing - Doesn't even rate 1 star.......2006-08-17
The thought that came to mind as I listened to this album was that this is music to which one might suicide or have a drug overdose. Ms. Kaur's voice and instrumentation is monotonous and irritating. If you have tin ears, have had a lobotomy, or are seeking to have one, the voice of Ms. Kaur may give it to you for the price of her album. Ms. Kaur's westernized "inventive melodies and instrumentation" are a definite impediment to any value gained from this sacred composition.
wholeness happens.......2006-07-06
Snatam Kaur's music first enchanted me in a recent couples yoga class. Her delicate sense of melody, her seamless blend of western and eastern instrumentation and composition, and the purity of her voice all merge to offer a rich, luxurious aural context for meditative pleasure on many levels.
Shanti, on its own merits, transports, soothes, and inspires; two of her other CD's offer context. The predecessor Prem (2002) brings a more traditional, more conventional eastern sensitivity; Grace, which followed in 2004, still speaks eloquently and exquisitely, with a slightly more western feel and structure. Shanti evokes, for me, the richest balance. Gently powerful repetition and variation facilitate trance-like consciousness; lyrics in Gurumukhi, the sacred language of the Sikhs, often find complements in brief English phrases. By the time you let the repetitions of "I am in peace/Peace is in me" soak through you in Ong Sohung, you'll feel it truly, deeply, exquisitely. You may even begin to see the world differently.
As the CD ended upon my first listening, I felt moved to say to Snatam Kaur what I said to my beloved partner in our yoga class: "Thank you. Sat nam."
Shanti.......2006-04-07
I recently discovered Snatam Kaur by way of her GRACE album and her music transports me to a finer place. I wanted more, but was apprehensive that the albums would be too similar or not have the type of music I hoped for. Not so in this case. Her SHANTI album is lovely and unique from Grace, and NOT a disappointment! Yipppeee! More beautiful music to sing on my way to work and in the pasture. (OK, I don't know the words on ALL the songs, but she does offer the words on the insert.)
Peace and Tranquility Abound!.......2005-06-03
Shanti is an amazing CD! I first heard it in (surprise, surprise) yoga class and have been absolutely hooked. It is a recording that will permeate your life in a profound and healing way. I listen to it in the car, while practicing yoga and when I simply need peace. Snatam Kaur has a beautiful gift in her voice that comes through in a divine way.

For being one of the edgier musicians out there, bassist and producer Bill Laswell has had a long time relationship with things new age, drawing upon spiritual as much as musical traditions from across the world, including India, Africa, and Bali. Albums in his Divination and Sacred Systems series all speak to alternate belief systems and are rife with religious imagery. Despite that, he's avoided the new age scarlet letter and maintained a reputation as an avant-garde provocateur. You can hear why on Asana's Ohm Shanti, Vol. 4. Although a title like that gets him placed in the front bin of the new age section, the music is prototypical Laswell, full of relentless grooves and dub bass lines that throb like a brothel in heat. Indian singers, including Kiran Ahluwalia, Ustad Sultan Khan, Fulguni Shah, and Asha Puthli, intone hymns to Shiva on expansive tracks you won't hear in a Hindu temple. Karsh Kale joins Laswell on most of the album, syncing up his tabla drums with Laswell's menacing grooves. There's a bit of Laswell's slapdash approach here and tracks like the title piece tend to go on too long. But texturally expansive atmospheres with ululating melodies ricocheting across the insistent grooves like kamikaze fighters make Ohm Shanti a compelling journey. That is, until the last track, a rendition of the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun," which is uncharacteristically straight and cheesy for Laswell and longtime associate Robert Musso, who plays guitar. Excepting that, Ohm Shanti propels you on an Indian dance floor of the imagination. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
Great...But Buyer Beware..........2006-06-20
The music on this CD is spectacular...just the sort of bass-driven genius one expects from Mr. Laswell. BUT, if you're like me, and prefer this sort of music to be vocal-free, then you are in for a rude surprise. While the outer packaging gives no clue, there is not one track on the CD that is vocal-free. If you don't mind vocals (or in fact like them) then by all means consider this a 5 star review. But if you don't want vocals with your Bill Laswell music, you may find the vocals on this CD to be extremely annoying. So buyer beware.
maybee the best of the sceries.......2006-03-24
the 4th instalment in the meta collection, again compilled by bill laswell. but unlike all the rest the entire album is written my laswell, karsh kale, ustad sultan khan, & eastern singers. this is more like a full album than a bunch of collected songs by various artists. the first 2 are more cheb i sabbah style, more traditional with laswell dub bass. 3 is a new version of asha from asana 3 but very original. mukti #4 is a completelly new song with a more tabla beat science feel to it with karsh playing acoustic drums & ustad playing the sarangi, best song from laswell in a while. #5 is an all traditional song from another album only 1:23. #6 is another upbeat heavelly eastern indian influinced dub song. balama #7 is heavily electronic influinced, just like eraldo bernocchi & mick harris were on this, straight outa veve. as does the pattern relaese #8 but more oscillations style melding into a version of here comes the sun (vocaless) by the beatles written by harrison, utalizing more eastern sounds & robert musso joining on guitar to play the lead lines, very simmilar to original no dub remix here.
so this is the perfect reason to sit back relaz & enjoy some very soothing sounds for the soul. what ever your relaxation be, yoga, meditation, herbal, drink, martial arts, this will set you free.

Breathtaking.......2007-02-03
I've never heard of Shanti Shanti until I heard Celtic Saraswati on the music channel: Soundscapes on Cable. I was hunting for some violin pieces on different music genres.
When I switched to Soundscapes for new age/world music/folk, I then heard an enchanting violin piece: Celtic Saraswati. Searched Amazon, Bought the CD. What a breath of fresh air. I love the mellow sound of Vedic Lullaby and the upbeat Language of the Gods. The track that was unusual, yet unique was Dreaming in Real Time.
If you want to explore your music world, Shanti Shanti should be one of your stops.
Another beautiful hit.......2006-11-23
I have been a fan of this group (two sisters) for some time. Their music is different and breath taking. I enjoy listening to the sanskirt and now realize why it is considered the mother tongue for most of the languages of today.
WOW!!.......2004-01-09
I just recently purchased this album. It is absolutely wonderful! There is a lot of vibration raising energy here. If you are reading this review, go ahead and purchase the album. You will not regret your decision.

A must for any Red House Painters fan!.......1999-07-22
This collection includes 4 incredible Red House Painter Tracks, I am a devoted fan of RHP and these four tracks are absolute gems. The Idaho and Hayden tracks are also very good and add to the value of this CD. I also enjoy much of what Low does, however the Low tracks included here are not new and not my favorites and not as good as the stuff on their new CD.
moody, intimate collection of 13 new and rare songs.......1999-07-16
The Shanti Project Collection is a benefit CD with proceeds donated to 'enhancing the quality of life... of people with HIV disease and AIDS." It features songs by moody musicians Red House Painters, Low, Idaho, Misc and Hayden. Red House Painters' four song contribution includes a rendition of Neil Young's "Midnight on the Bay" and a version of "Follow You, Follow Me" that does for Genesis what Aztec Camera's "Jump" did for Van Halen. And Hayden's songs, "Wasting My Days Away" and "Choking," sound as intimate as a friend whispering secrets in your ear late at night.
slow-burning, meditative and, ultimately, immaculate.......1999-07-15
Benefit albums are good causes, but from a purely musical perspective, they're usually not that satisfying. Either there's a plethora of big-name throwaway tracks, or the roster is so scattershot that it hardly encourages fluid listening. However, the Shanti Project Collection, benefiting an AIDS help center in San Francisco, takes a welcomed approach in keeping cohesiveness to its spectacular benefit by choosing five bands to fill out the whole CD. San Francisco's Red House Painters wade through their usual magical mix of country and rock, trading electric and acoustic sounds on "Follow You, Follow Me." Their best contribution, and that of the entire album, is a smoldering version of Neil Young's bluesy "Midnight On The Bay." The sleepy, dub-like "Turning Over," from Low, is indicative of this band's inertia-less, yet potent, style. They can make a silly refrain like "Sarah, you're lazy" (from "Lazy"), sound surreal and sublime. The usually lumbering Idaho, meanwhile, revel in Shanti's most groovy track, relatively speaking, "The Sun Is All There Is," accented nicely by a female backup vocalist.Hayden's slo-mo aesthetic and the prancing rhythms of Misc. round out the compilation. All these bands suffer from sad souls and have heavy sounds because of it; a perverse cohesion, sure, but with their intensity, this collection plays out as a slow-burning, meditative and, ultimately, immaculate listen.

Album Description
Beautiful vocals embedded in a soundtrack of instrumentals like: drums, shakuhatchi flute, violin create a meditative and uplifting atmosphere. A blend of popular Gregorian Chant and East Indian Dhrupad singing, harmoniously improvised on.A rare and successful combination of 2 sacred music traditions.
Customer Reviews:
Sacred Fusion leads us to a sacred space!.......2000-10-30
I lived as a Benedictine monk for several years, chanting the full specter of the gregorian chant. I have also studied the classical music of North East India for several years. Annette Cantor's clear, well trained beautiful voice transports the mind to an ethereal space that feels spiritually familiar. Shanti Shivani's voice is powerful and immediately pierces the heart with the spiritual mood of the indian raga (composition). The melding of these two voices and musical traditions is a rare experience of music fusion which should not be missed by anyone who enjoys relaxing and being inspired. Buy this one and add it to your CD collection.
Concept seems implausible but the music sings.......2000-07-28
This album combines improvisational Gregorian Chant and (South Asia) Indian Dhrupad chant. Annette Cantor and Shanti Shivani have voices that blend perfectly and are well attuned to the other's style. The result is that the two musical traditions blend beautifully; you hear them with an awareness of features you've never before noticed. Every track is a gem. Few musicians could be as successful with this European/South Asian blend - it is well worth your time to listen if you are interested in either tradition. You'll probably need to be familiar with both traditions, however, to put it on your "play weekly" list.

Different but still very good.......2003-09-10
On this CD, the Formans demonstrate their versitile talents
for various styles and genre. I think that aside from their
remarkable ability to sing and chant in Sanskrit, they compose
their own excellent music and lyrics. Incredible! We have here
a rare trio in Robert, Andrea, and Sara.
I hope they make a video.

I really like the music of Shanti Shanti. But this is one to pass on. It is a departure that is not nearly as inspiring.
