5 out of 5 stars Like a Can-Opener for your Brain.......2006-07-20

About ten years ago, I first heard "Da Lama Ao Caos" by Chico Science and Nacao Zumbi, it was like something subtle had shifted in the world. Unfortunately, Chico Science died after the band's next album, and even though the remaining members carried on, the band was never quite the same after that.

For a while, I wondered if I'd find something similar--something equally adventuresome, fearless, or ground-breaking. These guys are it. Everything goes into the blender, from metal to hip-hop to samba; but this isn't a fusion that calls attention to itself. It's a seamless blend that's passionate, fierce, and utterly danceable. This is one of the few acts from Brazil that could put a candle to CSNZ.

"Lado B Lado A" is where the elements that're only hinted at on the band's previous two albums finally come together. Don't worry if, like me, you don't speak a word of Portuguese... if this disc doesn't give you goosebumps, seek a cardiologist posthaste. There's not a single dud on this set. And the whole sounds like "Remain In Light," if Talking Heads had detoured via Brazil on their way to Africa. There's echoes of other things in here, too, from Material (in part thanks to Bill Laswell's mixing of two tracks) to Jorge Ben, circa "Africa Brasil."

There's a lot more that can be said about this album, and probably said better than I've managed here; but when all's said and done, it's about the music, and not the review. Buy the disc, and see if it leaves your CD player for a week. It's just that good.

5 out of 5 stars Glue for the soul.......2005-02-07

This all-time album finds its way into the musical part of your brain and stays in there like glue, no matter whether you speak Portuguese or not. If you undestand the lirics and watch the multimedia clips, then it goes even deeper in its meaning. This Band's work only gets better with time, as proven by their last masterpiece album, "A Calma que Precede o Esporo". Their first and last albums will quickly find a very special place at or near the top of your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Brazilian Bliss.......2003-02-28

I have been listening to this CD for a few years, and it happens to be the type of recording that enjoys prolonged stays in the player. It is a wonderful mixture of afro-brazilian percussion, reggae, pop, and avant-garde stylings.
The musicianship is excellent throughout and the eclectic range of influences creates music that is fresh with a depth not often heard in "pop" bands. Do yourself a favor, and add this record to your collection. You will not be disapointed.

3 out of 5 stars interesting.......2002-09-17

I don't know how to put it. It's nice, but not outstanding. I'm happy with their music but there is something missing. There is material, and I would suggest it if you are in search of something different all in one CD. In fact, I find familiar patterns in each song and at the same time original but nothing outbreaking. THere are 3 songs that I would save. But that it's personal.

5 out of 5 stars Best record of the decade?.......2002-08-17

I have few words to describe this record, the best record I have found in years - it is like the Sargeant Pepper's of the nineties so rich is the mixture of ideas.

May I say "best pop band in the world"?

5 out of 5 stars Great way to introduce yourself to O'Rappa. 1st CD.......2005-11-10

What you will find (And I grew up in Brasil / seen O'Rappa three times)

Is that O'Rappa has moved slowly from Reggae to Rock Reggae Rap. Truly one of the best international bands around. E Masa Cara !

Their lead composer and old drummer Marcelo Yuca was shot in the spine breaking up a fight between the police and the favela kids in Rio. Since then it is too painful to tour + he has left the band. Many folks including myself had doubts O'Rappa would remain as dynamic as they are. Truth is their new stuff is really good. Still 5 stars although everything they do deserve that recognition. Rio based socially conscience band for sure. Has a non profit (Palma da Mao) set up for Brasilian street kids. Falcao has a voice and attitude out of this world. O'Rappa in Brasil is one of the best bands that truly represent the country. Sold out shows and Fumaca all over the place. BUY everything you can and look from the MP3 on line of them with Tribo de Jah (Another great Brasilian reggae band; also all blind...wow...) performing Bob Marley's WAR in Portuguese. Check out also... Pato Fu, Both albums on Amazon " The sexual life of the savages " and " Nao wave " + IRA and Cassia Eller. AB

    5 out of 5 stars Strong reggae.......2001-01-04

Its a strange album for those who loves roots reggae. It's a roots reggae album but with the power of a rap/funk band and social lyrics.

If you listen "Coincidencias e paixoes" song, you will love this CD.

    4 out of 5 stars brazilian-ragga-rap-pop.......2000-11-23

This band has conquered its place in the brazilian scene through a miscellaneous of reggae, rap, eletronic and rock , besides the band's social help. This is a good cd for those who wanna be in peace, go to a beach and just relax.

    5 out of 5 stars O Rappa is INCREDIBLE!!.......2000-09-15

I usually don't like this kind of music but I LOVE THIS CD!!!O Rappa is a great song writer and performer. he is one of the better Brazilian Singers!! I would definitly buy a cd if he came out with one every day. I WOULD GIVE THIS CD A 10 AND A HALF OUT OF 5 !!!!BUY IT ,IT IS A GREAT CD

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best Brazilian music there is.......2001-07-13

O Rappa is certainly the best roots/rock/reggae band that Brazil has produced in many years. The lyrics are powerful and the vocals are amazing. Do not hesitate, it is impossible to dislaike O Rappa. Mundi is certainly better than the first cd, as a more mature band rises. Nonetheless, the first is also incredible. And my advice is: wait till their next release, Lado B Lado A. This is certainly the best roots/rock/reggae album released in Brasil in the last 50 years.

4 out of 5 stars Less reggae, more hip-hop than the fist CD.......2001-01-04

It's a transitional CD. Still cool with some super cool funky songs like "Pescador de Ilusoes", "Miseria SA" or the Jimmy Hendrix cover "Hey, Joe" and the reggae song "Nao sei mentir direito", but not as good as the first CD.

      I recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars A very good CD.......1999-01-02

A very good Cd, where all music are of a so likely rythim, that estimulate you to sing together, one of the bests in the genre!!!! I can said, that this is one of the better Brazilian music CD
