The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
Mad about Baroque.......2007-02-12
The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21
Brilliant.......2001-10-31
These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.
Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20
This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.
A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.
it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.
Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30
An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.
Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06
Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.
First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.
There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.
Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!
There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...
Its listening the way it used to be.

One nation Under God.......2003-10-30
The selection of music was excellent, and very much in keeping with the title and the theme of the album. The opening recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Thompson, underscored by a most respectful and reverent lead-in to "God of Our Fathers", perfectly set the stage for the well-appointed and majestically performed music that followed.
Several pieces evoked solemn contemplation and reverence, leading to others of pride, majesty and tribute, all arranged and played with proper respect and appropriate to the theme "One Nation Under God".
This is a magnificent and timeless album that will hold a prominent spot in my collection, and be often enjoyed.

Fantastic.......2006-01-25
Drums and cymbals evoking Amazons and ancient rites, Atomic Bird features a choral that is tribal, almost primeval, in nature. The song is awesome, furthermore establishing Kanno's knack for writing imaginative and interesting compositions for the chorus, such as those composed for Escaflowne.
Donna Cumberbatch leant her voice, and Tim Jensen his lyrics, for Reunion. The song relies on a violin and piano arrangement that is a pleasure, and rounds off with a slightly Jazzy, saxophone component; the sax is never distracting to the tone of the song, making for a well-rounded composition that is mellow and soft.
The strangely sinister playfulness of Next Time is appropriate for the lyrical subject, but the singer is so horrible that the song only grows nerve-wracking upon repeated listening. Suggestive of a demented circus, the song itself may be a wonderful match for a Tim Burton movie, but outside of that arena it's just too strange to listen to.
ABC Mouse Parade is dark and odd, but in such a way that is humorous and brilliant. Characteristically super-cute, Gabriela Robin trolls lyrics that are English enough to tease the listener, but are unintelligible enough to leave you guessing. With a good beat, and electric guitar and classical instruments (i.e. violins, piano) making for an eclectic mix, ABC has a whimsical, fantastic quality that is all Kanno.
This Eden features a tune that is tender and modest, uncomplicated and New Age, angelic and worthy of lyrics that include "Ave Maria." A song as simple as this could have easily been overwhelmed with heavy instrumentation, but Kanno reins any problematic, heavy-handed accompaniment in, resulting in a composition that may not be exciting, but is soothing and sweet.
Sounding almost straight from a Bond movie, Jensen wrote Nowhere and Everywhere, a song refreshingly not about love. Violins add a symphonic quality to a tune that is engaging, giving a rock-ish song more depth than most rock music. Steve Conte's voice is perfect for the overall feel; the song has a modern touch, but will be pleasantly familiar to those who listen to the Oldies.
Man in the Desert and The Ship were performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic and Chorus, and are reminiscent of Escaflowne, but on a subtler scale. Man in the Desert, suggestive of a sense of motion, begins with a lonely, chillingly beautiful tune, that steadily builds to an inspirational climax as orchestra and chorus unite. Jubilant and majestic, The Ship apexes in a dramatic, almost frantic crescendo of orchestra and chorus, each part playing off each other in everything we have come to expect from Kanno. Hallelujah continues in the same vein, and listening to the three songs in a row gives them a true cohesiveness, one leading into the other naturally and seamlessly.
Artisan is a solo piano piece with an enjoyable tune, and suffers from only one flaw: it is too short, ending just as you begin to expect more. Nonetheless, it is still a great track.
With a full-piece orchestra playing vibrantly and a soprano singing her heart out, most operatic style songs are exhausting to listen to. Effortless in its attributes, Lydia is an exception: a single soprano (Jadwiga Rappe) sings a beautifully simple and sad melody to the accompaniment of a single piano that plays just as simply, resulting in a song that is, overall, easy on the ears and on the nerves.
There are many cds produced by excellent artists, but many of them tend to grow monotonous upon repeated listening. Most often, the similar music style of every song leads the listener to skipping past most of the cd to get to the "good ones." Song to Fly defies this, never becoming repetitive and tedious: every song is interesting and unique. Indeed, the "uniqueness" of several songs maybe initially surprising, but every song exhibits a beauty and mastery, and repeated listening only proves to increase appreciation.
Album To Fly .......2004-09-13
1. Atomic Bird - A striking chorale of The Cosmic Voices Of Bulgaria... The first part is not that lively, but the second part sets off some very engaging scatting and singing... Then the song ends with a nice finale of chanting...
2. Reunion - There's something about Tulivu-Donna Cumberbatch's voice that's very calm yet strong... She's the one who sang the fantastic Mushroom Hunting (Cowboy Bebop: Blue OST, track 4) and grossly misunderstood The Singing Sea (Cowboy Bebop: No Disc OST, track 15)... I don't particularly find myself listening to this track, but the calm I get from this song is very satisfying... Somewhat sounds like one of those Christian Life song IMO...
3. Next Time - Dark, villainous, drunkenness... All comes to mind with this song... Franco Sansalone does a perfect job of singing this drunkard song... Oddly, children joins him in singing and turns more lively, sounding like a carousel or carnival in tune!?!?...
4. ABC Mouse Parade - Another dark but cute song... I guess it does remind me of a mouse parade for a children's cartoon... Not a fave of mine, but worth listening to once in a while when in the mood... The mood changes entirely though by the end cuz electric guitars finish off the song...
5. This EDEN - sounds very similar to 23 Hanashi (Cowboy Bebop: Cowgirl Ed Mini-disc, Track 6)... The same kid sings a nice tune by the end as well... This time though he sings Maria, probably pertaining to THE Immaculate Virgin Maria... Not that bad, but I really prefer 23 Hanashi better though...
6. Nowhere And Everywhere - Now we come to the BEST song Yoko Kanno made for Steve Conte (In my honest opinion, of course)... Like the other person below said, I didn't like this song at first!... Oh, how could I have been so dumb!... This has skyrocketed way up high my favourite Yoko Kanno pieces (or any other songs for that matter!!!)... I love the lyrics, the strings/piano composition, Steve's voice, and especially the 60's Beatles feel to it!...
7. The man in the desert - I'm gonna sound like a dolt sharing this but: One day, I was waiting in a bus stop by a not too busy yet a highly commercial street on a nice sunset WHILE I was listening to this track in my Discman... Then pigeons started flying by above (probably about a hundred, there were LOTS)... My mouth hanged opened and I tells ya' it was such a perfect song to go along with that moment I gotta share the experience!... A-N-Y-W-A-Y-Z, other than that I love this piece... If any of you have seen the inspiring animated short "The Man Who Planted Trees" (narrated by Christopher Plummer), THIS, in my opinion, is a picture perfect theme for it !...
8. Artisan - This is a nice piece but reminds a whole lot of Greensleeves... I still like it though...
9. The Ship - Doesn't start out that exciting, but....... wait for it........ Aah.... It escalates to a better piece especially the strong chorale and violins at the end... It kinda does remind me of a "Hook"-type ship (Now I really sound like a dolt!)...
10. Hallelujah - Ms. Yoko Kanno's version of the ever-so-sung Christian chorale piece: HALLELUJIAH... I like this version, it has two parts (A lively beginning and a peaceful ending); but I still prefer the more famous Hallelujah mainly played during Christmastime and the less famous Hallelujah from The Sound OF Music (1965)... But that doesn't mean I still don't like listening to this one... It's still a fantastic track...
11. Lydia - Jadwiga Rappé sings a more soothing Opera-type song... Not a fave of mine although it ends a magnificent CD...
Weird collection of music.......2004-05-26
The first half of this album consists of a very odd mixture of tracks, many of which are performed by people other than Kanno. The tracks vary from East European chanting (Atomic Bird) to 1980's style soft rock (Nowhere and Everywhere) to New Age (This Eden), with two songs simply unclassifiable in any genre of music (Next Time and ABC Mouse Parade). Many of these tracks are performed by non-Japanese musicians as well, although ABC Mouse Parade is performed by Kanno (under a pseudonym). Although these tracks collectively make for a weird mixture of music, they are all great to listen to, and they may even lead the listeners to find new genres of music.
The second half of the CD includes mainly orchestral and choral works that I found less interesting. Although I have no training in classical music whatsoever, I can tell that some of the music is experimental in nature. However, the music failed to interest me as much as the music in the first half of the CD. Some of the orchestral tracks are nice to listen to, but they do not excite me as much as the earlier tracks.
In summary, I would say that this is a good CD to buy for someone who is interested in simply trying something different. Fans of Kanno's work on anime soundtracks might find something similar to what she has performed previously, but most of the CD will be different.
Never Dull.......2002-09-29
Atomic Bird - The spectacular opening to the album, a soaring choral piece that rises and falls like the wings of a bird. Similar to Green Bird from Cowboy Bebop.
Next Time - The lyrics are creepy and fun, and the vocals suitably disturbing to match. It sometimes sound like the song is being sung by a drunken Frenchman. Definitely strange. The tinkling chimes at the beginning and ending of the song are beautiful.
Nowhere and Everywhere - One of my favorite songs in existence. The first time I heard it, I didn't like it, but the second time, I actually listened to it, and it said a lot to me. It's a little more Pop than some of the other songs on the album, but still undeniably different, the mark of a Kanno piece. It's a lot deeper than Pop songs, for starters, and even quite a bit darker.
Simply put, if you can keep your ears (and your mind) open, this album will give you a lot to think about. I wish I could force everyone to own a copy and think about it. Since I can't do that, I encourage you to take the initiative and buy it on your own. This is one purchase you will never forget.

It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."

Soprano Dawn Upshaw's programs are always interesting, and this one's a beauty: one of Bach's most heartfelt cantatas flanked by songs and arias of Purcell. For the most part, she's in excellent voice, but with the tics that make some demur from enthusiasm: occasional swooping, thinning of the voice in the upper regions, lapses into a "Broadway" type of vocalism, and diction problems. The latter, oddly enough, are as present in Purcell's English as in Bach's German, as in the way Upshaw lands heavily on the r with a broad American accent rather than the lightly rolled r we're used to in performances of period English music. There's also some broad word-painting in the Bach, whose text, charting the soul's journey from sin to redemption, really needs no extra emoting. That said, Upshaw's fans will love this disc, and even those who prefer a different approach will enjoy it. Accompaniments are excellent: a continuo team in the Purcell, a small chamber group in the Bach. Outstanding sonics, too. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
Beautiful, fervent Bach, but the Purcell songs are a bit prettified.......2006-08-24
Now that the Sun hath veil'd his light............2001-08-04
Shaw's interpretation of Purcell's 'How sweet it is to love' reminds me of the elation I first felt on realizing love exists. 'Lord what is a man' brings one back to earth with a lamentation about human frailty and the finiteness of human existence. "Rejoice, rejoice" sings the angel in 'Hark! How all things' with lyrics from 'The Fairy Queen' -- a text by E. Settle after Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.'
Bach's cantatas fill the air as Upshaw sings arias in German (interpretations are provided in the text accompanying the CD). J.S. Bach's songs are clearly and beautifully articulated by Upshaw while in the backgound various wind and string instruments accompany her vocalizations. Many of Upshaw's vocalizations by Bach in German as well as the instrumentation (including viol consort) remind me of the arias from 'The Messiah' -- majestic albeit on a very human scale. For example, Aria #9 by Bach is comparable to "He shall lead his flock.." (although the latter was written for an alto voice).
The music in English by Purcell is a bit lighter. My favorite piece is 'An evening hymn' by Purcell which I would expect to hear near dusk in an English chapel. However, ANGELS HIDE THEIR FACES contains music you can play year round at any time of day.

hark ! how well the lady sings.......2001-05-31
The musicians in the simple accompaniment are superb, and the entire package excellent...it was the cover art that first drew my attention to this CD...an unusual and moving painting by Hugo Simberg titled "Wounded Angel" from 1903. It also has the lovely added touch of being slip-cased, making it a perfect gift item for anyone who likes this type of music.
