So-La-Li

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The former 3 Mustaphas 3 bassist delves deeply into Indonesian music on So La Li, with the light dangdut style mixing with traditional Sundanese texts. Backed by Bandung's Jugala All Stars, Sabah gets a sound that's both exotic and warmly familiar--indeed "Seuri" bears a strong resemblance in both style and melody to Roxy Music's "Avalon." But this isn't a Mustaphas pastiche; it's very much the real thing. While not the ethnomusicology of Discover Indonesia, it's still very much representative of the pop styles coming out of the area, be it dangdut, jaipong, or whatever. Singer Tati Ani Mogiono's lovely voice drips over the top, and Sabah himself offers his croon on a few numbers. Of course, there are the fun touches, such as the lap steel on "Di Nagara Deungeun," which takes the music from the Indian Ocean to the open plains, but it all works. Something to slake the most curious thirst. --Chris Nickson

From Rhythm Magazine
Singer and bassist Sabah Habas Mustapha, co-founder of 3 Mustaphas 3, has played with an unusual array of world music artists, including Stella Chiweshe, Maurice El Medioni, Tarika Sammy, Dembo Konte and Kausu Kuyateh. So La Li extends the Jaipong groove laid down on Jalan Kopo, Mustapha's previous Omnium release, with world-pop reworkings of traditional Sundanese songs from Bandung, the capital of West Java, Indonesia. The ethereal sounds of suling (notched vertical bamboo flute), Sundanese violin, kacapi (zither), khendang and senggak (percussion) and Javanese vocals blend easily with guitar, lap-steel guitar, bass and drums. The resulting music is rhythmically infectious, spirited and good-humored, surprising and undermining Western esthetic expectations at every turn. --Michael Stone

5 out of 5 stars Very convincing Liszt B Minor Sonata.......2007-05-31

Yundi Li played this piece to win the 1999 Utrecht International Liszt Competition. It is not surprising that he won.
The recording of the B Minor Sonata alone would have worth the money for this disc.
As the pianist himself said in the bonus VCD, Liszt is different from Chopin - the style is more open, more flamboyant. Li manages to play the piece with real character and impeccable technique, plus true expressiveness.
The rest of the album also showed the pianist's propensity for this composer's works, though it should be noted that special attention had indeed been paid to the B Minor Sonata. That said, since this legendary recording, Li's version of the La Campanella has already set the current standard for this beautiful piece. Not surprising, given the highly imaginative interpretation and impeccable technique employed by this young artist in playing this piece.
Heartily wish that Yundi Li would further expand his repertoire in the right direction in the years to come.

4 out of 5 stars A very young virtuoso with lyrical instincts.......2006-08-31

Yundi Li made a splash with this recital three years ago when he was 22 and a fresh competition winner in Europe. DG signed him up to join their other Chinese star, Lang Lang, but it's not sheer musical politics (i.e., China's vast untapped market) that was the motivating factor. Yundi has a real personality in this demanding music, lyrical and sensitive, combined with an explosive technique that never turns into banging. He's as instinctive as Lang Lang, who is several years his senior.

Yundi's gifts come into their own in the music of Liszt, which has too often been cornered by barn-burners like Cziffra and Horowitz. It's a relief to hear the B minor Sonata played with sensitive respites in between the fireworks. In gentler pieces like the Widnung trasncription, the line is pure silk. I'm not sure I hear total maturity yet in the sonata, but Yundi Li is well on his way to making a lasting career at the highest international level.

2 out of 5 stars Boring showmen, all of them.......2006-07-26

I was first acquainted with Yundi Li when he came for his Boston Debut at Jordan Hall. The program was a typically Chinese program: Chopin's Four Scherzi, and Liszt's B Minor Sonata, S.178. Having heard so much about his pianstic abilities and his victory at the Chopin Competition, I was ready for some good Chopin. Yet all four Scherzi lacked imagination, personality, and breadth. The first-half of the program was like a 40-minute exercise of arpeggios, virtuoso runs, etc...

The Liszt was fine. But everybody can play Liszt "fine". The B Minor Sonata was very well-controlled, a mature performance, but there was not much more than that. There was no inner fire, no brooding desire behind the notes, none of that magic we hear with Richter or Horowitz.

And the encores were La Campanella and Rigoletto, also represented here on this CD. La Campanella, being a mere showpiece and hence a "stupid" work consisting of all fingers and no brains, was not as scintillatingly brilliant as Cziffra's performance, just stale. Rigoletto was no longer an operatic transcription but an etude. First listen to Li, then compare his performance with Cortot's recording of the same piece. No comment, no comment at all.

In conclusion: the new crop of Chinese pianists should get brains. I suggest playing a little bit of new music, not Chopin, Liszt, then Chopin, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, and Chopin again. Let the poor man's soul rest in peace.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing.......2006-05-17

This CD is simply amazing. The level of musicianship is stunning to say the least (especially given the performer's age), and the technique is flawless nearly all of the time. As shown by his mastery of the Liszt Sonata, Li is definitely on the track to be on par with Horowitz and Rubinstein. Truely worth the money.

1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment! .......2006-04-09

After having heard so much about this pianist, I decided to use the opportunity and go listen to him in a concert hall.
Although the program included Schumann's "Carnaval" and Liszt's b-minor Sonata, it was 2 hours of total bore. And not only for me. As I was observing the audience, everybody seemed to wonder - what are we here for? The overall atmosphere in the hall was far from electrified and the response after each piece was just polite. Yundi Li's performance was uninteresting and empty. His pianism also had very little to offer - no touch, no pianissimo, poor pedaling (dry or total blur), in cords he hears only tops and basses, no sense of musical time - he often breaks it without reason - and there was no vision of structure of the piece, otherwise the tempos in the score would have been respected (after all Liszt was not an idiot and knew what HE wanted to say). I don't even mention the dramaturgy of this masterpiece, it would be too much to ask...
I wish people stop react on names and trust more their own senses. This pianist's success is clearly all about marketing.

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn Horne scintillates.......2007-05-20

This 2-CD set includes 32 separate "cuts." Thus, it provides a perspective on the broad range of works that Marilyn Horne mastered. While some pockets of work may be given somewhat short shrift (e.g., Rossini), overall this shows off her skills nicely. Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania (one of the coldest places in the nation during winter), she made her operatic debut in 1954. In liner notes copyrighted in 2003, she notes that: "Can't believe it's time for a 70th birthday celebration. . . ." And neither can I, since I recall hearing her perform at the Met (via the old Texaco opera show), and it does not seem all that long ago!

Some cuts well depict her artistry across a range of genres and composers.

The "Habanera" from Bizet's "Carmen" is, to be sure, an old chestnut by now, but she sings it with a rich and lustrous voice. She sings a seductive aria seductively.

"Eccomi al fine in Babilonia" is from Rossini's "Semiramide" and shows off her skills nicely. This piece shows off the range of her voice well. Her voice is very agile, as it would need to be to do Rossini justice. There are some nice runs; the cabaletta showcases her agility and allows her to display well sung ornamentation.

From Handel's "Semele," we hear "Hence, Iris, Hence Away." This is a sprightly piece that is characteristically well sung by Horne.

Handel's "Rosalinda" features a nice work for mezzos, "Dove sei amato bene?" If I hear correctly, Horne begins this with a trill in piano; there are a number of nicely executed trills in this work. This cut is smoothly and richly sung throughout.

"Addio, addio o miei sospiri" comes from "Orfeo ed Oridice" by Gluck. A sprightly paced work. Horne shows off excellent ornamentation; her coloratura technique is terrific.

From "Norma" (by Bellini) there are 4 cuts (from a longer scene), featuring collaboration with Joan Sutherland. The two singers worked well together in a number of operas, and this set of works illustrates that synergy beautifully. "Mi chiami, o Norma!" starts things off. The two voices meld extremely well together. "Deh! Con te, con te li prendi" features fine work all around. Both singers display good vocal dexterity. Horne hits one high note with a bit of harshness, but not an issue of any moment. "Mira, o Norma" is ravishing; Sutherland's and Horne's duet is absolutely wonderful. Finally, "Si, fino all'ore estreme." This is a fast paced duet, with both singers manifesting considerable vocal agility and sound coloratura technique. When they sing together, their voices almost sound "twinned."

Finally, "Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair." Horne sings this straight, without the ghastly "opera-tizing" that some singers cannot resist. Sung simply and powerfully. Her rich voice produces a very good vocal effect.

And so on.

Although this CD does not fully represent her repertoire, it does provide a good sense of the art of Marilyn Horne and it suggests the range of her singing. For those wanting to get a sense of Horne's oeuvre, this is one recording that provides entrée to her body of work.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Voices of All!.......2006-01-29

I am not the only one who regards Marilyn Horne's voice as exceptional. During the seventies and eighties she was regarded by The New York Times Music Critic as possessing the greatest voice of our time. One only has to sample this "golden" collection to prove how right he was. Her "mezzo" handles Handel and Rossini like no other. Brava all the way (To say nothing about Dalila's famous aria!) And I must even mention her "Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair". This is a two CD that is a MUST for those who appreciate the glories of the human voice (To say nothing about the warmth and spirit than accompany it.)

5 out of 5 stars Not 100% satisfied with the selections, but what artistry!.......2004-11-03

Decca's release of this career-spanning Marilyn Horne recital contains many "golden" nuggets, but isn't the absolute best representation of her artistry, in my opinion.

There was certainly plenty of material to choose from, as Horne was one of the most recorded mezzos in the twentieth century. As advertised, Madame Horne personally approved the final recital list, and the diva undoubtedly has sentimental attachment to certain selections. Furthermore, a conscious attempt was made to represent the different genres explored during her decades-spanning career. This approach, however, leaves out some truly stunning material that would have made an even stronger case on why she was such an operatic institution.

In summary:

The first disc begins with the Habanera from Carmen. Horne was very proud of her Carmen, noting that it surpassed sales of Callas's Tosca at one point. It deserved to be included, but I don't think she was "THE" Carmen, and besides, the whole opera is so warmed-over by now, it's hard to get anyone excited about it!

From then on, we are treated to a bonanza of wonderful arie and scena. The aria from Samson et Delilah is a real gem. Horne was certainly not the most glamorous singer, but My God, the interpretation is heavenly. This is what the aria sounds like in the hands of a world-class contralto. Eccomi in Babilonia follows, and by anyone's measurement, she is the finest Arsace on record. Blessed with an extraordinary range, she is as fulminating in both the top and bottom registers. What's more, her spirited delivery magnifies the pure genius of Rossini's music. As for Cruda Sorte, "ditto," as Marilyn herself might say.

Next, we are treated to two excellent Handel arias. Iris, Hence Away gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. This was recorded in the early sixties, for inclusion in the Age of Bel Canto recital she shared with Joan Sutherland and Richard Conrad. Now, if she had recorded this a few years later, she might have drove the coloratura harder. However, at this point, the voice had a somewhat lighter quality, thus the aria isn't sung with that all-purpose "Marilyn Horne" voice we are so used to. Speaking of lightness, Dove Sei, Amato Bene will send shivers down your spine. Again, Marilyn wasn't known for her subtlety, but she proves here that she was more than capable. Just listen to the fluttering trills and fil di voce, and dare to disagree with me! One of my major complaints is it there isn't more Handel on the recital. Sure, a whole recital of Handel arias by Horne is still available, but in this best-of disc, there was room at least for Or La Tromba, the trumpet aria from Rinaldo, and a personal favorite. Also, nothing is included from Vivaldi's Orlando Il Furioso, another travesty.

The pinnacle of the first disc is Addio, I Miei Sospiri, from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. This is Horne magified to the nth power. Where to start? A scrumptiously sung recitativo, then the aria itself, with Marilyn pulling out all the stops. The bronzed tone, perfect breath control, spectacular coloratura fireworks, superlative diction, evenness and security from top to bottom, and Marilyn's own way of generating excitement will floor you. This is bravura singing at the highest level.

After a few other selections from the French reperetoire, the disc closes with two Rossini warhorses. Again, the "ultimate" Horne best-of would have saved room for more Rossini, on the second disc. But the evidence here is ample enough to proclaim her honorific as the leading interpreter of Rossini in the last century.

The second disc is less satisfactory. The first selection, Superbo Di Me Stesso sounds like it came from an inferior source, and wasn't remastered properly. Il Segreto Per Esser Felici, from Lucrezia Borgia is fine enough, but Marilyn could have ornamented more, and that snare drum is too loud! Then, we have an extended scene from Il Trovatore. Now, Marilyn herself stated that she wasn't perfect in Verdi. As she put it, she sang Verdi by not taking "both feet" out of the bel canto waters, so that she could go on singing the roles that brought her the most fame. This is understandable, but if that's the case, then we didn't need this long scene. Perhaps she wanted to highlight her collaboration with Luciano Pavarotti, and I'm sure Decca saw this as a way to lure the casual listener. For my money, though, they should have just included Stride La Vampa, and called it a day. This would have freed up lots of room for the stuff for which she's better recognized!

Now, another extended scene, from Norma, is completely justified. Equally important to Marilyn's legacy as an individual artist is her legacy as one-half of the Sutherland/Horne duo. I don't need to write more- the music speaks for itself.

The rest of the second disc throws in a bit of verismo (Horne is unrecognizeable in Ponchielli; Simionato she's not), a bit of German lieder, and some patriotic tunes. Along with Leontyne Price, Marilyn Horne was the most conciously patriotic singer out there, and to have left out her American recordings would have been a disgrace. But, again, we are given an ample serving of it, when it could have been scaled back some to make room for her operatic triumphs.

All in all, there is enough glorious material here for any fan of the legendary Marilyn Horne, and also those who want a taste of how a superlative mezzo/contralto sounds like.

5 out of 5 stars Vive Madame Horne !.......2004-01-09

      5 out of 5 stars Afronesia.......2006-10-20

A pretty glorious slice of world-pop, deliriously melding some diverse styles into a very groovy mix. Mustapha's percolating basslines weave into traditional Indonesian instruments and vocals, creating something rhythmically rich that (despite its oceanic geography) calls much of West Africa's contemporary music to mind.

"Bubi Chen" even adds a dash of Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va" into the melting pot of styles. An excellent, catchy, captivating release.

5 out of 5 stars An Uplifting Treat From Sunda.......2003-12-27

So-La-Li is absolutely one of my top favorite CDs. I have listened to it countless times and it never gets boring. Following the legacy of traditional Sundanese music, most songs on this modern Pop CD are both rythmically engaging and hauntingly beautiful. No matter who you are, this music will speak to you and perhaps make you a Sundanese music addict.

5 out of 5 stars "So La Li" is Key!.......2001-03-16

For those familiar with 3 Mustaphas 3 all I need write is that "So La Li" continues faithfully in the footsteps of the world music masters. Sabah Habas ain't no slouch and neither are the Jugala All Stars.

For the rest let me put it this way, this is an excellent album. It mixes Inodnesian (specifically West Java) music with just enough western sensibility to make an accessible and delightful set of recordings. The musicianship and production quality are top notch.

If you have heard Sabah's previous release "Jalan Kopo", this is more Sunda and less Sabah. The humor and irony takes a back seat to the music. The pop elements are subdued & the Jugala All Stars get a chance to shine forth with brilliance. Also, there are no English lyrics this time around.

But what does it sound like? -Take a series of fluid and often brooding bass lines, then layer on top intricate hand drumming, a fiddle & a kacapi (a kind of harp) using haunting Indonesian scales, smoothed over by absolutely sublime bamboo flutes and mellifluous Asian vocals. The rhythms are catchy and will have grooving where you stand (or sit), and the melodies are full of a sweet nastolgia.

One warning: this is not straight pop, there are a few places where "So La Li" will challenge the ear. The challenge does not lie in the music itself, but in the passion it expresses. The listener is brought into a very intimate space with a very foreign culture (unless of course your Javanese). Parts can be a little scary at first, but there is plenty of levity to balance it out. This is one of those special albums that unfolds and grows the more one listens.

4 out of 5 stars "unica" por Thomas Binkley.......2002-07-09

1 out of 5 stars Too much countertenor.......2001-09-20

Sorry, while I love medieval and renaissance music, I don't enjoy countertenor voice (except for Farinelli!). This CD is all countertenor.

5 out of 5 stars More Thomas Binkley.......2001-06-17

I won't try to add more praise to the deserving and already lauded recording in question.

Binkley fans may want to go to amazon.co.uk for recordings not found on the US site such as Binkley's Peasant, Dance and Street Songs in Germany in the (early) 16th Century - in my view one of his finest.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Collection for the Medievalist.......2001-02-27

This music is from the 12th and 13th century (to correct the previous reviewer). Studio der Fruhen Musik was one of the pioneering early music groups -- led by the American Thomas Binkley. This collection brings together three releases from the early 60's and shows the ensemble in their early days. It is a shame that the label --in this case Telefunken -- doesn't release their entire output (say in a box set, for instance). EMI Reflexe, where this group next recorded, also has failed to rerelease their archives, as well. Highly recommended, if only for their historic value.

5 out of 5 stars I never grow tired of this collection.......2000-08-06

I actually don't have the CD. It is about time I buy it. I do have a 15-year-old set of 4 cheap cassettes of this very same collection. Despite their quality, they have been a prize in my medieval music collection. Amazon does not say, but you should know that the majority of the music here is from the 13th through the 15th centuries. Some of the music may borderline renaissance, but it is truly a medieval collection. Since it is music of the troubadours and minstrels you will be hearing male voices, some singing quit high creating an eerie and haunting feel to their songs. You should also note all the German songs included. I thought it was unusual and nice. As far as their performance goes, I thought it sounded "real". I mean "real" as opposed to a modern group singing old songs. They sounded like they were really troubadours and minstrels. Their music transports you back in time like reading early British literature.

For those who are interested in medieval music, I highly recommend this collection.

The relatively recent enkindling of interest in women's roles in early music has led to a phenomenal increase in scholarship and an expanding catalog of recordings. Most of these recordings focus on composers--heard of Hildegard?--but others are concerned with performers and those who in some way influenced poetry and music. This recording features the unique songs of the women troubadours from southern France (trobairitz) and women's songs (chansons de femme) sung by trouvères in the north. The music covers the period from the 11th to the 13th century. The songs are concerned with traditional subjects, namely, courtly love in all its aspects. Because very few melodies exist from this period, modern performers have to work with a combination of skimpy sources, musicological research, and intuition, which this fine ensemble of (mostly) women does with impressive results. The liner notes are well-written and very informative on this rarely discussed topic. --David Vernier

This CD is marvellous. The Todd s voice is very beautiful. Using music, she and the musicians give a spectacular view of feminine medieval world of France. I would highlight the music A chantar m'er de que so qieu non volria, unique feminine medieval melody that survived until our age.

5 out of 5 stars A real piece of history from 1958 - mono but not dated.......1998-12-14

This box set earns its 5 stars on three counts. The first, the obvious one, that Boris Christoff (so closely identified with his namesake Godunov) is the perfect Mussorgsky bass. The second is that these songs are all excellent, not many 'complete' song collections can be so uniformly good. The third, and this is what makes it 5 stars not 4, is that EMI have really taken the libretto seriously - 144 pages with full cyrillic texts (not just roman alphabet transcriptions) plus translations in English, French and German.
