Everyone grows up... even rappers. Pioneering female MC Queen Latifah shows a newfound level of maturity on The Dana Owens Album. A set of standards the rapper/actress decided to cover, the album features a host of jazz classics and R&B favorites.

Latifah is at her seductive best when playing the sultry siren on Al Green's "Simply Beautiful." With a little help from Green himself, Latifah's vocals slide over the warm, organ-drenched instrumental. The result is one that works today as well as it would have several years ago. Similarly, the big band-backed "Baby Get Lost" swings with bluesy groove that is pure nostalgia.

However, it's when Latifah mines more standard fare that the album seems to hita snag. Fans of James Moody's "Moody's Mood for Love" may want to skip Latifah's version, as it misses the subtle perfection of the original. Her rendition of "I Put a Spell On You" doesn't falter, but it's not impressive either. It ends up being the kind of performance that finds you constantly waiting for more but never getting it. The same can be said for her cover of the Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'."

That said, with Latifah's recent critically acclaimed turn in the film Chicago, this album's timing couldn't have been better. And with help from legendary producer Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin), The Dana Owens Album is an interesting and impressive new chapter in the star's diverse career. --Rashaun Hall

THIS LADY (QUEEN LATIFAH) HAS OUT DONE HERSELF WITH THIS CD.
SHE IS MULTY TALENTED AND I RECOMMEND IT TO ALL HER FANS AND NEW NEW FANS.

5 out of 5 stars The Queen can sing jazz!.......2007-07-24

This album is sitting right in the center of my collection of great jazz vocal recordings. What a triumph for Miss Dana Owens. Please record some more jazz tunes Queen!

5 out of 5 stars Thats Queen Latifah?!?.......2007-07-19

Her rich voice is well suited for this type of jazz and blues standards. The CD is great from first to last. Listeners are always amazed when I tell them who it is. Her version of California Dreamin was a surprise. Would highly recommend this CD.

1 out of 5 stars Nice voice gone bad........2007-07-09

I have really tried to like this album. Really I did. However, the more I push myself to like it the more I find wrong with it. Don't get me wrong Ms. Owens has a great voice, I think she would do well with to cover musical theater not jazz. Also, the Hello Stranger song is great but boring. Ms. Owens offers nothing new on any of the jazz standards on the cd. The songs sound forced and there is no emotion at all to them. There is no range with her voice either, every song sounds the same.

She actually butchered a few of the songs: (Lush Life and Baby Get Lost). I won't be too hard on her about Lush Life, it's a difficult song and most people butcher it (poor Billy Strayhorn). I think she should have taken the route of Ol Blue Eyes and left it alone.

5 out of 5 stars Queen Dana Rules!.......2007-05-21

I always liked Queen's personality, but knowing she was a rapper didn't impress me. Then one morning it happened; a morning after when I didn't want to get out of bed, my local jazz station debuted her rendition of "California Dreamin'." Impressed that she could actually carry a tune, I sort of blew it off, then saw a video of her in the studio working on the album. BAMMO, that was it!

What a delight to discover the Queen not only used her real name on this outing, but also proved she can sing. Can she ever! What a sultry, sophisticated, easy-on-the-ears set of pipes the lovely Queen has!

While it's all good and worth the money, I have to admit I don't care all that much for "I Put a Spell on You," "Simply Beautiful," or the aforementioned "California Dreamin'." The rest, however, is a sublime treat for the ears, particularly:

The sexy brass bombshell of jazzy "Baby Get Lost" in all its boldness and attitude.

The down and dirty powerhouse blues of the chugging "The Same Love that Made Me Laugh."

The cool, erotic, mysteria of "Close Your Eyes."

Absolutely fun and thouroughly enjoyable treatment of "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy."

The sweet, nostalgic innocence of "Hello Stranger."

Simply beautiful and charming "If I Had You."

The pitch perfect phrasing and attitude old jazz classic "Lush Life." (If you think Linda Ronstadt can sing that song so well, listen to this, and I guarantee you'll laugh your buns off!)

If you like your music on the nostalgic side with a spoonful of sass, an equal measure of honey, and a generous helping of sophistication, get your hands on Queen Dana's album. The lady seriously rules!

When New Jersey's Dana Owens adopted the stage moniker of Queen Latifah when she launched her rap career in 1989, she also assumed the regal bearing and flowing clothes of African royalty. Her raps not only demanded respect but also radiated an unassailable air of authority. Since then Latifah has branched out as an actress (starring in the TV sitcom Living Single), businesswoman (she co-owns Flavor Unit Management, which handles rappers like Naughty by Nature), and singer (she sings with a live jazz band on the concluding cut of a later album), but that imposing dignity remains her trump card on Black Reign, her first album for Motown after an unfriendly split with Tommy Boy. Her refusal to be pigeonholed or limited in any way is part and parcel of her demand for respect and makes her one of the most rapidly evolving artists in hip-hop. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Da Queen hit'em hard wit dis one.......2007-06-02

Da Queen brought it all together on this one. She had already earned respect with her other albums, but this one put her on an even higher level than previous records did. She gave us everything on this one. She gave us Black Hand Side (catchy), Rough (the title speaks for itself), U.N.I.T.Y. (da anthem) and Just Another Day (smooth) and everything else in between. Most MC's can barely do more than one type of song, but she showed much versatility and that's why it is worth buying. This was the best Latifah album ever!

4 out of 5 stars Queen Latifah's in the house........2007-04-15

People do not really associate Queen Latifah with her music as much as her acting. Upon hearing her music... I was impressed, her songs are really funky and fun, including fast ryhmes and cool jazz with that 90's flair. This album is good, but I think her "All Hail The Queen" album is much better!

5 out of 5 stars The queen reigns supreme on this one.......2006-10-16

Standout tracks: BLACK HAND SIDE, LISTEN TO ME, I CANT UNDERSTAND, ROUGH(classic match up), BRING THE FLAVOR, COOCHIE BANG(nice safe sex promotion in this song), SUPERSTAR, JUST ANOTHER DAY(classic), U.N.I.T.Y.(best anti-misogynist record ever!) WINKI'S THEME(touching tribute to her dead brother) etc. Filler: I never liked Weekend Love but thats it. Bottom Line: Queen Latifah gives you and undeniable classic and unfortunately its the last good album you'll here from her. While she showcases her skills on songs like Black Hand Side, Rough, Bring the Flavor, she gives you some gems like Coochie Bang and U.N.I.T.Y(a song which she addresses misogyny). You will never hear records like these from these overrated drama queens that the rap game is infested with nowadays! LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!!

5 out of 5 stars BlAcK ReIGn.......2006-08-30

Remember good hip hop music through the QUEEN!!! Check it out, all the tracks are cool. Especially recommended for those who haven't listened to this LP in awhile to re-discover it. A++

5 out of 5 stars Very funky album! The Tony Dofat songs still stand out! .......2006-03-06

This album from Queen Latifah still is a favorite to me! Makes me think that a live band is performing this entire album instead of different producers and samples. Especially U.N.I.T.Y. which is so funky--I'm thinking that there are live horns and a band instead of a sample. But there are countless standouts, especially Black Hand Side, I Can't Understand, Just Another Day, her tribute to her late brother and others. My favorites are the Tony Dofat produced songs, with his hard beats and the echoes on some of those beats. Dofat did about 6 to 7 songs, while S.I.D. and Kay Gee did the other half of the album. Dofat gives the S.I.D. songs some tight competition! I still like Listen 2 Me, perhaps Dofat's best produced song then or now. But Latifah's themes of standing up for yourself and making women take control of their lives are a common theme througout this album and that's what I love about Black Reign. I was pleased that she won a Grammy for U.N.I.T.Y.! I've played it more ever since it won. It makes this album more respectable. An album that I still love to this day!

3 out of 5 stars Why was this censored.......2006-07-04

The only reason I dont give this 1 star is because these tracks are timeless. Censoring Unity defeats the whole purpose of the song. Latifah was displeased how women were being refered to as the b word. This is bull****. Most of these tracks are ruined. I recommend just cop her albums.

2 out of 5 stars It coulda been a LOT better........2005-11-29

Shes A Queen is a half a**ed greatest hits collection.
    No linear notes or nothin.
Some KEY tracks of her career are missing.
Nuff Of The Ruff Stuff, and How Do I Love Thee, off of the Nature Of A Sista album.
Weekend Love, and I Can't Understand, the 3rd and 4th singles off her Black Reign album.
What woulda made the whole package hot is Winkis Theme, her trbute to her late brother Lance on the cd.

3 out of 5 stars Not that great. Needs improvement.......2005-08-17

This "She's a Queen : A Collection Of Hits" cd is not that great. The songs are censored. I hate that. Censoring "UNITY" is just wrong. Latifah says "B!+(#" in the song for a reason. Censoring it defeats the whole purpose of the song : women standing up for themselves when being called names. "It's alright" States that it features Faith Evans (which she co-wrote the song. Just like the version on "Order In Th court" and "nothing to Lose" Soundtrack, her vocals are not present. The "order in the court" CD booklet says the background vocals are by Lil Mo. If FE did provide vocals, it would have been better if they were more noticeable.

Latifah was the first major woman rapper to build a career on positivity, and this debut is proud, funny, and self-assured. Latifah knows she's the best so she doesn't have to tear down anyone else to prove it. Neatly produced (with simple, dance-friendly beats, mostly by loop-master DJ Mark the 45 King) and stylistically varied (including a couple of expert forays into dancehall reggae), it collects her early singles along with a bunch of convincing pronouncements of her royalty. Where she shines most, though, is on a couple of duets: "Mama Gave Birth to the Soul Children," with De La Soul clowning around under her tutelage, and "Ladies First," with Monie Love deftly trading verses with her. --Douglas Wolk

4 out of 5 stars Pre-Grammy Greatness From The Queen of Royal Badness.......2007-03-25

In a masculine dominated genre, not many ladies of hip hop were representing especially back in 1988-1989. Salt-N-Peppa, Sweet Tee, MC Lyte, and Roxanne Shante were a few very successful female artists. When Queen Latifah came onto the scene, she was unlike anything coming out at the time. Her mix of dancehall reggae, R and B, Jazz, House, and rappin' ability became unwordly to 1988 ears. Male or female, she may be the most versatile emcee to do it. "All Hail The Queen" is her shining moment which redefined emceeing as we know it.

The opening song "Dance For Me" is a great example of her versatility blending jazz with upbeat swing over a melodic 45 King production. When the single dropped in 1989, it got many heads buzzing. It wasn't no one hit wonder fluke because "All Hail The Queen" is packed with hit material. "Mama Gave the Soul children" proved that the Queen could even step out of her comfort zone and hang with De La Souls quirky swagger. The beat sounds as if Prince Paul sampled an old Walt Disney record. To this day dancehalls swarm when "Come Into My House" plays and it somehow never feels dated despite the fact that house songs seems a thing from the past. The slow burning "The Pro's" is an underground club banger which finds Daddy-O tapping into his reggae roots.

The Queen of Royal Badness proves why she deserves the limelight on songs like "Wrath of My Madness". Her commanding delivery is assertive and her braggadocio seems sincere and brazen at the same time. However, no other song on "All Hail The Queen" captures Queen Latifah's breakout moment better than on "Ladies First". It is considered the first feminist hip hop anthem. Monie Love and the Queen sound as one mind on this record trading righteous rhymes over a funky saxaphone melody. It even got props in the Source magazine as the 55th greatest hip hop song ever made. The album ends with two amazing reggae influenced songs in the loopy bassline of "Princess of the Posse" and the laid back jazz of "Inside Out". Without question, they were excellent choices for singles.

Back in 1989, Queen Latifah was truly bringing down the house. She never really had another record that came close to her brilliance displayed on wax here. While receiving grammys and acting awards, it is shameful that her new found fanbase has overlooked this being her best work in her collection. This is truly an excellent record that is not to be missed.

this album is not the best i have ever heard, but it does bump. i love THE PROS with daddy-o. i love the rawness of it. i also dig WRATH OF MY MADNESS the other raw, aggressive joints on here. that kid who dissed latifah needs to listen to his 50 cent and just forget about this because this is HIP HOP!!!! kid, this is not for you. this is for true HIP HOP HEADZ and those younguns with open minds. if this applies to you, then you will really dig this as i do........perhaps more.

5 out of 5 stars The Queen Has Spoken!!!!.......2007-02-22

I totally agree, this album is off the chain. Ja Rule and 50 cent wish they could be in a class of their own like the Queen...she totally rocks and while these other want-a-be and wish-they-could-be rappers will come and go...the Queen will live on forever because she has multiple talents and is the real deal. Most rappers today don't know what real music and lyrics are...if they did they wouldn't disrespect women, society and life in general but would bring positive messages to their raps like the Queen...all I can say is go ahead Queen and keep doing your thing:):)

4 out of 5 stars Underrated hiphop, almost a classic.................2006-11-01

Latifah had all the qualities of a great female MC (flow, beats and them juggs). My personal favorite joint from her.

    Top Tracks:
    The Pros
    King and Queen Creation
    Come to Me
    Ladies First
    Latifah's Law
    Inside Out

    5 out of 5 stars All Hail.......2006-02-22

Queen Latifah Knows...this album was spectacular...it is uplifting and has good beats and anybody who has the nerve to even say a fool like 50 cent or a no talent joke like ja rule is anything better than her has nerve because she is history..she is what 50 and Ja bite off of...she is what they can't live up to...so know your history before you praise the present...but queen, you gotta represent!!

Is Bahamadia the best female MC? Maybe. She's got the voice, a sultry butter-smooth beauty that oozes into cracks between beats as if they were born to accommodate it. She's got the flow, alternating between fierce battle raps and pensive poeticism. And she's got the lyrics, combining intergalactic intelligence and down-home realism. So why haven't you heard of her? Because Bahamadia's brains have made her a liability in the eyes of record labels, who don't know how to market a fully clothed female. BB Queen is her first solo CD since 1996's (out-of-print) Kollage. It's a short and sweet introduction to the brilliance of Ms. B. "Special Forces" features her spitting the jewels that bling bling with Cali Agents Planet Asia and Rasco over a piano-tickled, fully loaded beat. Slum Village producer extraordinaire Jay Dee contributes "One-4-teen," a laid-back slab of smoothness. On "Commonwealth (Cheap Chicks)," which features a sonorous, laid-back rhythm, Bahamadia delivers a first-rate ode to 'round-the-way girls, "low budget connoisseurs who get they shopping on in Wal-Mart and dollar stores." That's ghetto real, not ghetto fabulous. All hail the BB Queen. --Lizz Mendez Berry

4 out of 5 stars well worth the wait........2001-05-30

For those of you who enjoyed Bahamadia's multiple guest appearances from 1994-1999, this solo album was indeed well worth the wait.

In my opinion, there isn't much more refreshing in the hip-hop world today than an intelligent, well-spoken woman who can rhyme the hell out of just about anyone.

As well, the beats and production on this album are top notch - including one track with d n' b breaks; truly an eclectic and fun mix of the best hip-hop has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars The Queen Is Back!.......2001-05-19

"BB Queen's Intro" sets up the album momentum, with DJ Revolution scratching in some tight sample cuts.On "Special Forces," the Cali Agents and Chops join Bahamadia for this hot track.DJ Revolution also adds a scratching hook, with the best part being when a line from Prodigy: 'We move like the special forces green beret': is heard in the mix."Commonwealth (cheap chicks)" is a song for all the women, where Bahamadia tells the women to just relax and do their thing."One-4-Teen (funky for you)" is a laid-back track, with Slum Village coming in with a great vocal hook. This song is perfect for one of those late-night undeground Hip Hop party spots."Philadelphia" serves as the album's intermission period.Dwele produces and sings over this meditative track, giving out an ode to Philly.Dwele also produces "Beautiful Things," and joins Bahamadia while she lyrically exposes the depths of her contemplating consciousness. On this song, you definately have to listen to what she is saying because she is talking about something of substance.I like to think of this track as representing the underground Hip Hop version broadcast of say...CNN news. This song is very enchanting and will definately soothe the listener.Things get really amped-up on the last track,"Pep Talk." Bahamadia flows over a subtle drum-n-bass background, once again, rousing the listener.

Too bad this album was not a full-length album because when you reach the end of it,you are left with wanting more music. But since it is Bahamadia,I am happy regardless of the quantity because she gives you pure Hip Hop quality.

3 out of 5 stars Bahamadia makes her claim.......2001-04-14

Bahamadia debuts on this album and makes a more than fair stake for her claim.Although I think she is wickedly intelligent and tough to talk bad about, I will say that this album does not have a great composition. With only seven tracks, it's hard to really get your head bouncing to any of her cuts. There is no real depth to this album, but she does have great potential for future albums.

      4 out of 5 stars Incredible album.......2001-02-16

This is a really incredible album. It shows that Bahamadia's still got it after her widely-praised-by-the-underground/hip hop heads effort "Kollage". Great songs. My favorite songs are "Beautiful Things" (which is one of my favorite songs of 2000), "Commonwealth (Cheap Chicks)" (which has a crappy video that doesn't fit the original integrity of the song), "Philadelphia" (with its melodic, dreamlike rhythm) and basically every song from beginning 'til end. It's worth the purchase. She represents the Illadeph side nicely.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent content, but it's too short........2000-12-17

Bahamadia is probably the best female MC in hip-hop today. Her silky smooth voice melts like butter over every track she blesses.
BBQueen could've scored 5 stars had it been longer. Special Forces kicks things off with an upbeat tempo, and some worthy guest spots courtesy of Rasco, Planet Asia, Chops, & DJ Revolution. Commonwealth addresses some of the "cheap chicks" not only in hip-hop, but in society. One-4-Teen (Funky For You) is one of the smoothest tracks of the year. Philadelphia features a nice vibe and some good harmony courtesy of Dwele. Beautiful Things is yet another standout which showcases her true lyrical talent. And Pep Talk is a mesmerizing track on which she spits rapid-fire over a great beat.
There is not one misguided track on this album, but again, it's just too short. Maybe another 5 or 6 tracks, and this could've easily been a classic.
That said, it's still highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Came to Life.......2005-04-12

I have owned this album since its debut in '97, but never really paid any attention to it. I just bought it because it was hot at the time--I liked a few singles. Just recently I popped it in my cd player and I was amazed at how much talent this lady posesses. Its a shame that her career didn't take off like Trina's did(she gets 5 wigeddy's and 10 whacks). Queen Pen is a top notch femcee.

3 out of 5 stars Queen's Melody Is Pretty Nice. 6.5/10.......2001-07-23

With the debute of one of the most leathal female rappers in the game, there came fame and then Queen Pen disappeared. But I think Queen Pen's Melody is pretty nice. The album starts out with a wasted intro and the next two tracks that follow are also not very hot but at track 4 ("All My Love) the album picks up from where it should've started and then goes into the title track "My Melody". But the highlights of the album are "It's True", "Girlfriend", "Get Away" and the smash hit "Party Ain't A Party". I think the reason I am feeling Queen Pen's album is because she is so real and the music and quality is pretty good, most female rappers nowadays can't put out a solid effort and have one hit. I feel Queen Pen will continue to put out good material. Even if she doesn't drop another hot album this one is still a classic in my book.

Queen Pen is the Bomb! She can hold her own with Li'l Kim and Eve. For her freshman album, she came out blazing. I loved every song on there.Keep up the good work, Queenie. You're one of my favorite female rappers and you don't have to portray yourself as a slut to be popular.

      5 out of 5 stars That heat!.......2006-10-18

Yo, I am bumping this right now. "One Mo' Time" is cold-blooded! Latif can rhyme and I am happy to have found out about her when she was rockin' the mic! The album cover makes this look like some corny old-school stuff, but it's really just Queen Latifah runnin' through solid beats like WHOA. Buy this for a penny and shipping and thank me later.

4 out of 5 stars The First Two CDs I Ever Bought [Part 1 of 2] {4 Stars}.......2006-07-01

Queen Latifah could be considered a prototype because of the direction her career has gone. Not only did she have skills, but she had the business end taken care of (Flava Unit management, records, & production company) and even turned into one heck of an actress. She even executive produced this album and Naughty's debut. The sister was (and still is) on a roll. Nature Of A Sista is the first CD I ever bought (along with Naughty By Nature's self titled debut). Dana Owens shows her versatility on this album. Tracks like "Fly Girl", "How Do I Love Thee", and "One Mo' Time" show that Latifah can blend all kinds of different sounds. Production is handled by Naughty By Nature, K-Cut (Main Source), Luis "Louie Louie" Vega, Soulshock & CutFather (Soulpower), Nevelle Hodge, and Latifah herself. House, jazz, R&B, rap.....Latifah covers plenty of bases without damaging her credibility. The girl is simply too talented to be restrained by genres.

As far as flaws, there really aren't that many to be found. There may be one too many r&b tracks on this album for the typical rap fan. It's done very well though, so I can't really say it's a bad thing. There are some tracks that could fall under skip material like "Bad As A Mutha", "If You Don't Know", and "Sexy Fancy". The rest of the album is great.

Nature Of A Sista' isn't Latifah's best album (that distinction belongs to the Black Reign LP), but this is still an excellent listen. Latifah doesn't get the props that she truly deserves for what she's done for females in the rap game. If you want to hear Latifah as she started to hit her stride, then pick this album up. There are a variety of sounds to be found here and Latifah easily masters each and every one of them. Two thumbs way up.

Standout Tracks: Nature Of A Sista, Love Again, How Do I Love Thee, One Mo' Time (My Favorite), Fly Girl, Latifah's Had It Up To Here, That's The Way We Flow feat. Safari Sister Swatch, and Give Me Your Love

5 out of 5 stars This is the one.......2005-05-24

All her other albums are good, but this is the one for me. She threw her best combinations up in this joint. She shows you her range w/this one from the rap to the jazz piece at the end. If you are a true fan, then you've gotta own this one.

      5 out of 5 stars queen l-a-t-i-f-a-h in command.......2004-04-04

if youre lookin for a good queen latifah cd, this is the one to get. the lyrics are creative and concious, and the beats are off the hook. its definately a cd to make you feel good. this is why queen latifah is one of the best rappers/singers/actors/revolutionaries/people out there.

5 out of 5 stars All Hail The Queen!.......2000-09-19

Dana Owens kicks out a collage of beats ranging from funk to soul in this, argueably her best work. From the syrupy track "How Do I Love Thee", to the pro-female sexuality commentary "Fly Girl", this whole CD cranks it out, which is rare.
