Form over Substance.......2006-12-18
I listen to World music all the time and especially latin beat, flamenco, etc...
When I compare what I feel when I listen to my world music CD's of some of
the world best performers with this DVD, my experience is that Nights of Fire is
stale, bland, boring and aseptic.
If you liked Nights of Fire, I highly recommend you check out the Putumayo
label and their 60+ world music CDs and discover the "real thing".
If Nights of Fire moved you then go to the "source" and listen to the original
performers of such musical styles. Nights of Fire is like frozen concentrate
compared to freshly squeezed fruit juice.
EXCELLENT.......2006-07-05
I SAW THIS GROUP LIVE IN THE U.S.A. AND I HAVE TO SAY IT WAS AN AMASING SHOW. I WILL DEFINITELY GO AND SEE THEM AGAIN NEXT YEAR. I GIVE BENISE HIMSELF TOP MARKS FIVE STARS.
M.P.L. THE NEW FOREST. U.K.
A enjoyable CD.......2006-06-14
Benise's music thou not as tecnical as say Paco De Lucia or Phil Keaggy, Is still quite enjoyable and filled with emotion. I like to use it as background music for my juggeling shows because of the emotion it seems to bring from peaple. I hope this helps you make a choice.
WOW.......2006-06-11
I was amazed by the talent - what a beautiful and wonderful DVD to watch. Ron Benise will touch the lives of many people through this DVD. Even if you do not enjoy Spanish guitar, you should watch this and you will appreciate it! I guarantee it.
Nights and Days of fire.......2006-06-09
I was lucky to see this program live as well as own the DVD. The music and dance are fabulous. This artist and his troupe have a lot of years to grow as they discover all their talents.
Each different CD has its own treasures so I reccomend owning them all.

By far his best.......2006-11-13
I have all the old vinyls and all the new cds, but non touch the live performance of Carlos on this album. This truly shows he is by far the greatest guitarist of all time. Hendrix was great, but he's dead!. Oh yeah, and shame on anyone who doesn't aggree that Santana live is better than any studio recording. And if this his his best live album, then this is his best album of all. I highly recomend. This is comming from a Carlos fan who's been listening to him since the beginning. Trust me you won't be dissapointed.
Good but not great.......2006-07-01
Sacred Fire: Santana Live in South America is a nice recording of an early 90's Santana concert.
The sound quality is first-rate.
The musicians, while very good, are no match for the Santana band of the late 60's and early 70's.
Of course, Carlos Santana's fiery guitar still has the power to carry the show.
I didn't particularly care for a few of songs on this album (like Esperando and Make Someone Happy) but the renditions of their earlier works like "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen" and "Toussaint L'Overture" are fantastic.
Overall a rewarding musical experience but for the best live recording of a Santana performance I'll stick to "Lotus".
If you're a Carlos fan..........2005-11-11
...and don't already own this CD, you really should be ashamed of yourself.
So buy it now while you still can. It might take a minute to get over the 80's synth stylie on the keyboards, but don't let that fool you - This CD is MONEY!!! First he breaks into 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' during Oye Como Va. Then he hits some Breezin' by George Benson during Samba Pa Ti, and finally tops it off by bridging into Marvin Gay's "I Want You" during Europa. Unbelievable! Best Sanatana CD I own - Bar Nun!
Santana's worst album?.......2005-04-20
I find this album unlistenable, due to the cheesy synth sound prevalent in every track. Carlos' guitar playing is quite good, but the overall sound is one of synthetic 80's blandness, more appropriate to a New Age radio playlist. Vocals lack any of the soul of earlier Santana recordings. I'm selling my copy of this CD, and couldn't find a single track that I really wanted to extract and keep.
Visually and aurally wonderful...,.......2005-04-02
This really is a 5* item. I bought this after seeing it several times on TV (PBS). The music is great, the footage really does seem to have captured a particularly magical concert. The Mexico City footage is also inspiring. For not much more than a CD you get a great selection of music, a visual spectical and a chance to watch Carlos play (I am a guitarist -- so I like to watch how he plays). Wonderful!
[Isn't Mexico considered Central America rather than South America though?!]

Passion and Fire.......2006-11-14
I enjoyed all of the selections on this album. A couple are old favorites from a previous album. Only one or two selections are in the "OK, But Not a Favorite" category. Generally, that's because they are a bit too wild for my taste. However, others who like Barbieri's super firey style may like them.
Hot Hot Hot.......2004-09-02
His Passion exudes through his music. Can't help but fall in love with this.
Saxy Saxy.......2000-07-14
Even though this CD by Gato Barbieri has been out since the 80's, I found the cut "Europa" and had to buy it. How could I resist, I still vividly remember dancing at my wedding, to "our" song, held tightly in my husbands arms...and feeling our own "Passion And Fire".
These many years later, Gato's sexy tenor sax still evokes desires. Thank you Gato, we both thank you.

Some tracks great....others are very dated sounding.......2000-04-01
The first few tracks of this CD are great! However, some of these tracks sound like background music for "Starsky and Hutch." The best track..."Europa..." Great for a late night with the one you love.
Gato is the Greatest!.......1999-10-04
Probably the finest tenor sax player in the world, Gato will make you feel good all over. The power of the music will make you want to grab your lover and dance them all over the floor! This is a must have CD.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Collection.......2003-07-05
For those of you who love the sound of a crisp and clean acoustic guitar and a soulful voice to go with it, this is a great album to own. This collection of HITS is not by any means the complete and definitive anthology of Jose Feliciano's Greatest works but is a great place to begin. After you listen to this CD in its enirety you will realize why this artist is so loved and respected by the masses. For the people that don't enough about this artist amazing talent and international appeal this set delivers to the maximum potential and provides the listener a beautiful and rewarding listening experience. Jose is the kind of musician/performer that once you have listen to his easygoing layback style of singing you will be immediately hooked on what has been universally known for more than 30+ years as the Feliciano sound. This album include's four of Jose's greatest classics that are an absolute MUST to become more familiar with this artist's classic repertoire. They are LIGHT MY FIRE, the only song in pop history to go to #1 twice. The Doors original in 1967 and Feliciano's colossal remake in 1968. CALIFORNIA DREAMIN, another remake of a classic by the Mamas and The Papas. CHICO AND THE MAN, the song that Jose wrote and performed for the popular TV sitcom of the same name starring the late Freddie Prinze. Last but certainly not least RAIN, another Feliciano composition who is a favorite among his many fans (myself included). The rest of the album's tracks are superbly performed and a few of them make their debut for the first time on CD. One of my favorites AND THE FEELING'S GOOD from the fantastic LP of the same name release in 1974, is a true Feliciano classic in my opinion. BY THE TIME I GET TO PHOENIX, is a beautiful instrumental that displays Jose's gentle and pure but nevertheless brilliant skill as a guitarist. This track was originally included in what many consider to be Feliciano's greatest album ever 10 TO 23 released in 1969, produced by Jose's longtime friend and collaborator in the studio Rick Jarrard. Overall this CD and his legendary career now in it's fourth decade prove to be a powerful account of how a little boy from Puerto Rico who was left permanently blind at birth defied all the obstacles and insurmountable odds and went on to become one of the most versatile and gifted entertainers the world has ever known. Accumulating massive stardom and phenomenal wealth along the way. Get this CD, you will love it.

Captures Barbieri's Virtuosity and his Few Weaknesses.......2006-04-28
This album is apparently two albums put together. I am familiar with "El Gato," an album that is hard to find and too bad because it has wonderful songs on it, some of which are on this one. They are "Merciditas," "Ninos," and "El Parana" and "Vidale Triste." The first three are powerful compositions, affording Barbieri many opportunities to showcase his passion for music, his soaring altissimos, and his versions of John Coltrane's wall of sound (tens of rolling, boiling notes, packed into a time frame that is literally unbelievable). In addition, the percussion, piano and bass voices are all compelling, especially some of the bass lines, which, inspired by Barbieri's visions, scamper about and bubble up out of sheer joy.
When expressed through music, romantic (sexual) passions can take on spiritual or universal dimensions that far exceed the parameters of the original inspiration. Music can reframe our perspective from a stationary being in a stationary room to the reality of an object spinning in a circle on a globe that is whirling around a star that is itself twirling around a galactic center whose galaxy is flying around a galactic cluster. Good musicians always keep their eyes on the center as they trek through the dizzying loops of infinite forms (circles, ellipses). Some of the views the musicians on "Bolivia/Under Fire" offer up are truly spectacular. They are adept at contorting tempos almost beyond recognition, only to have them come careening back with added vigor. This, to me, is the most powerful kind of jazz fusion, where the violence is continually mitigated by sensitive hands.
Barbieri often starts at the destination and moves in retrograde fashion, which makes for some rough contours and sudden shifts. This is because he is intoxicated by visions and unconcerned with the future. Contrasted with this impulsiveness is the perfectly formed and developed structure of "Merciditas." On "Ninos," the most dramatic song, Barbieri pulls out all the stops, and lets out screetching altissimo wails near the end which are followed by a weathered descending line that is wonderfully fatigued. Meanwhile, the bassist has been charmed and his rubbery, supercharged notes fly about maniacally before drifting airily into the folds of Barbieri's luxurious curtain. Barbieri creates the musical equivalent of a South American revolution, with lots of little kids running around with machine guns.
This music has the anonymous character of, say, gothic art. And, like that art, it is engulfed in suffering and insights.
I usually do not listen to "Eclypse/Michellina" or "Bolivia" in their entirety - Barbieri can get overbearing and amateurish at times too. Another weakness is on "Antonico," a short, beautiful latin composition that he botches (in my humble opinion) by overproducing multiple sax voices that are spliced together rather clumsily. This ravishing melody needs only one voice, one that is allowed to convey its romantic thoughts in an unhurried manner, without interruption. Instead of the certainty of love, we get its confusion. I think what he was trying to achieve here could have been done, but by having multiple sax voices only in the last iteration of the melody, which would convey the scattering of the personality that romantic passions can produce. In the recorded version, they come in too early and muddy the water.
Some of Barbieri's vocals sound like an animal dying in the rain forest and do not produce the desired effect. (He's kind of a nutty guy.)
But this music is very powerful, has something existential about it, reflects what is now an extinct animal: the human being evolving, in touch with God. The musicians are more like supplicants, sacrificing themselves in the music, which is liquid and runs. The early 70's were heady times, especially in New York, where this music was recorded. Nothing else I've ever heard surpasses the intensity recorded on this album.
Soaring Melodies and Dense Rhythms.......2004-12-16
I remember the days when Gato Barbieri became the toast of jazz. Caliente had recently been issued and the song Europa was all over jukeboxes and FM radio. It was at long last a North American breakthrough to the mainstream for a man who had toiled in relative obscurity for the better part of two decades. Caliente is today still a best seller for him, but what about his other work?
Old-time cognoscenti and early-adopters of Gato Barbieri can be thankful now that his pre-Caliente solo work on the Flying Dutchman label is being reissued and made available to those of us who are second or third-generation Barbieri fans. I remember listening to more knowledgeable jazz fans talk of Barbieri when I was a young teenager but I never got to hear what they were talking about until Caliente swept the airwaves. I did eventually obtain Bolivia on cassette, but it certainly didn't have the rich fullness of sound as does this CD.
Gato Barbieri is perhaps the best tenor saxophonist of my lifetime and starting with the fabulous Merceditas, he wastes little time living up to that accolade. Soaring melodies and dense rhythms envelop the listener in a state of entrancement as the music progresses.
The entire CD is good, but I particularly enjoy Merceditas, Bolivia, Ninos, the frenetic El Parana, the smooth, flowing Antonico and Maria Domingas. Barbieri's rendition of Atahualpa Yupanqui's Yo Le Canto a La Luna demonstrates his rarely presented vocal ability.
If you are a Barbieri fan who came to his music upon the release of Caliente or later, you owe it to yourself to get this and hear where he came from. If you are an early fan, well you just need to get the CD and give your scratched up LPs a rest. Double your pleasure and order this today!

A listening pleasure.......2007-05-21
Words cannot describe how I feel about this CD so I will be brief. For those interested in Native American traditions and culture including the music, this CD is a must. It contains music from various traditions, without all the 'nuage' fluff. Other recommended items are 'Music from a Painted Cave' and other items by Robert Mirabal, items by Robbie Robertson and the Red Road Ensemble, 'Eagle Cries' and other items by Joanne Shenandoah, and 'Voices' by Doug Spotted Eagle. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Not from Cuba.......2002-09-12
The customer reviews are always helpful but one review got my attention. The customer said Michel was a "Afro-Cuban Genius".......correction, he is a "Afro-Dominican Genius". Michel Camilo is from the Dominican Republic not Cuba.
As a dominican I felt the urge to politely correct the statement.
Thanks
Camilo - Afro-Cuban genius........2001-08-14
This CD is absolutely fantastic. Every track is breathtakingly beautiful. Camilo's chord voicings in this style are by far the most lush, complex, and beautiful I have ever heard. The mastery of the piano that it takes to play at this level is unthinkable. I've only seen him live once, but I wish he could move into my house. Joel Rosenblatt also shines on this album as well. If you haven't heard Rosenblatt live, do yourself a favor and go to a Spyro Gyra concert. As for Camilo, he's in a league all his own. Highest recommendation.
A real piano jam!!!.......1999-05-09
Camilo shows a variety of rhythms that shows us how a piano is to be played and enjoyed. A good sweet jazz piano jam is how I personally call this, a good jazz performance that shows a different face of jazz with a latin feeling that comes from the same roots from outstanding performers like Chucho Valdes, or Gonzalo Rubalcaba. This is a must have for good latin jazz listeners.
I think I wore out this CD. . .my undeniable favorite........1999-03-09
From the first tune, the jovial "Island Stomp," you know you're in for a great album. A great variety of songs, from ballads to latin to smoking swing, this album continues to be my favorite after 7 years! This was my first Camilo album, I now own them all!!
