He comes together on this records, his first solo offering at 96, with a group of young musicians known as The Essential Resophonics. The combination of steel guitar, double bass, Spanish guitar and ukulele covers some of Tapia's favorite standards in their respective genre. These recordings, which occured on two days in Feb. of 2002, represent a photograph of a piece of musical history. The portrait is completed with two historic recordings from 1936: Tropical Swing and Stars and Stripes.

Spanish Harlem Orchestra's United We Swing does more than just make you want to dance. The joyous collection will likely incite a full-scale house party, complete with flowy dresses, sparkly jewelry, and silky, unbuttoned shirts. The disc plays like an actual live performance, a tight mix of passion and precision. Bandleader Oscar Hernandez even introduces the entire outfit on the opening track. Horns blare, percussion pulses, and a voice of choruses guides several numbers. If nothing else, take a listen to the trio of "Sacala Bailar," "Ahora Si," and "Que Bonito," which comes midway through the disc, for an idea of SHO's sparkling seamlessness. "Danzon For My Father" is a touching instrumental tribute, and the bilingual "Late in the Evening-Tarde en la Noche" features an inspired guest spot by Paul Simon, who matches the group's swelling enthusiasm. This is the sort of CD you'd sit and listen to in an afternoon, while doing something else. Great easy listening.

This guy's voice is sexy and sensual. He has a huge range of things he can do with his voice. 'Ya' is one song where he showcases his voice quite nicely. Magdalena, Mi Amor is a remake of Quimbara with a plena boricua flavor. In all, this CD is one of their best.

fun, but not their best........2000-06-27

I first got to know DLG w/ Gotcha, and then I decidded to buy this cd, knowing that it would have had to be teh bomba since Gotcha was really good. I was a little disappointed in this cd, but there are some great songs on here. Ya, the first one and others are worth it! Add this cd to your collection, but if you buy anythign from them, make sure it is Gotcha first!

There is not much to say... This album is great... The sounds, full with the latin style. The lyrics, the voices mixing and an incredible life touch... That's DLG best work to date. Just an art piece.

DLG is the Bomb!.......1999-11-08

This album is the Bomb! I have yet to get the 1st album, but I have this and "Gotcha." This album is without a doubt the best album I've ever heard. Great to Salsa to, and "Magdelena, mi amor (Quimbara)" is a perfect street Samba track.

Hawaiian Music Done Right.......2007-01-19

The star rating of this CD is misleading...this is a phenomenal album from a ukelele legend (hard to believe that this guy is almost 100!!!)I actually stumbled upon this CD while browsing the tropical music section of Border's in anticipation of a trip to Hawaii. I scanned it and immediately purchased it. Every song on this CD is lazy, relaxing tropical swing (think hawaiian with a little bounce to it). He tackles old jazz standards (Mood Indigo and Mack the Knife) among others and makes every song his own. The production is very good, and the musicianship is top-notch. If this CD doesn't magically transport you to the islands every time you put it on, then you oughta check your speakers. HIGHLY recommended!

Incredible Uke Man.......2005-09-27

This album is a gorgeous mix of music performed by what I would deem a National Treasure. I saw this man play live this year (2005) and he can even make the uke strings sound like a drum! Fans of Hawaiiana, uke music, or vaudeville will all enjoy this album.

A 25 year success story....ahora con swing a domicilio........2003-01-06

When I purchased this album, I honestly did not know what to expect from a group that has a successful 25 year flawless music history. Los Hermanos Rosario are truly talented and gifted because they always seem to come up with a unique production that keeps their fans chanting and dancing for many years to come. "Swing a domicilio" is no exception. This is some serious merengue not to be taken lightly. They still have that touch and have added two new genres to their repertoire. This is album contains their staple music, merengue and surprisingly enough one bachata (excellent) and one cumbia (well done). Amazingly all the merengues have new nuances which set their merengue apart from other groups. Something I noticed right from the beginning, this "swing" has a very unique caribbean flavor. To say which song or songs are best, it's your choice but one thing that is certain is these are the Hermanos Rosario of old- full of joy, spirit and fervor. No doubt about it this album is representative of their success story and I strongly recommend this purchase to all fans of los Hermanos Rosario and merengue lovers in general. It's new, it's wild, it's untamable, it's swing....a domicilio! Doy las gracias a los Hermanos Rosario por tantos anos de merengue y de exito. En verdad su merengue es bomba. Pa'lante mis hermanos.

Virile fusions.......1999-06-17

Before Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley songwriters picked up on Cuban and Puerto Rican styles in the pursuit of disposable novelty hits, these styles were being honestly fused with the emerging modern jazz of bebop and cool. Of course, this took place in New York City, as Machito and other emigres were welcomed by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, and by dancers who no doubt wanted something hotter than intellectual bebop. The result is in these raw recordings, which are compositionally astute, blending Ellingtonian orchestrations with bop heads and the clave, while retaining and even magnifying the rhythmic intensity. Such a virile fusion of Latin and New York styles would not be heard again until the Nu Yorican movement of the 1970s.

One awesome merengue CD.......2005-07-19

I wasn't very familiar with merengue when a friend of mine let me hear this CD in '95. However, I've always loved dance music, and I can tell you that this CD is one AWESOME CD for dancing. It has a very tropical feel to it and lots of sing-a-long type of melodies. If a "gringo" like me can appreciate this CD, I'm sure most people who don't even speak Spanish would, too!

I have listened to so many merengue and salsa albums trying to find one that wasn't completely cheesy, I thought that this one would be no different. I was very sruprised! Great lyrics, awesome percussion, great beat: not to slow that it defeates the purpose of merengue, not too fast that a beginner couldn't follow. Perfect!
