Ancient Greece has contributed so much to the modern cultural landscape of the world, but Greece's music has always been--with due respect to Nana Mouskouri and others--near the bottom of the list. While this collection isn't going to change the general public's perception, fans of Northern Mediterranean and Eastern European music will find it fascinating. Tracking a music style whose golden era was 1830s to 1950s, Rough Guide to Rebetika offers up tales of death, disease, hopeless love, drugs and jail that would make American bluesmen nod knowingly or break down and weep if they understood Greek. The 22 tracks here range from recent material recorded by artists leading the music's renaissance (Maryo Mapio, Glikeria, etc.) as well as early stars (Roza Eskenazi, Andonios "Dalgas" Dhiamandidhis, etc.). And although the quality of the early tracks is sketchy at times, the performances are strong enough to overcome these limitations. This is truly a fascinating overview of a music past and present. -- Tad Hendrickson
Product Description
Rebétika is the music of the Greek underworld, whose golden years started shortly after Greek national independence and lasted until the 1950s. A rich and heady stew, rebétika focuses on hopeless love, disease, drugs, death and imprisonment. As a musical form, it draws on numerous sources such as the formal instrumental suites of the Ottoman court, the solo vocals of Turkey and Iran, and the captivating, sophisticated instrumentation of the café aman in Istanbul and Izmir. The Rough Guide To Rebétika showcases some of the best rebétika artists from its early roots to the rising stars from the more recent revival movement.
