Tamborea

While Energipsy are billed as Gypsy new wave, bringing an image of the Gipsy Kings to mind, they're actually far more poppish than the Kings. To be sure, the Gypsy and flamenco influences are there in the guitar work, and Francesco Grant owes a stylistic debt to Manitas de Plata, but Energipsy's original material like "Quisiera" or "Chica Bem" has very little in the way of roots, and "Magdalena" is pure Latin pop. But they are strong songwriters with bouncy rhythms and infectious choruses, putting them in the top class of adult pop music. And "Space Flamenco" does show that they can craft some excellent nuevo flamenco if they want, but they seem much happier aiming their music firmly at a mainstream audience. They might not break down any musical barriers, but what Energipsy do, they do very well. --Chris Nickson
