4 out of 5 stars This album title speaks the truth!.......2000-06-09

Farid El Atrache's "King of the Oud" CD is one of those albums that re-shapes the way you look at music. His skill, imagination and passionate playing are the types of attributes that set standards for younger generations.

Although I can't read Arabic (99% of the liner notes are in Arabic, only the title is in English) I can tell that this CD was recorded in several different places. Some of it is live, with him playing taksim. The other half of the CD is studio performances of him performing songs.

The taksims (this means solo improvisations) are absolutely jawdropping! The depth and beauty of his playing is otherworldly. The large crowd that this was recorded in front of is going wild too. After playing a particular run or theme, the crowd is cheering so loudly that it almost drowns the playing out. Believe it or not, this is actually far from distracting, it actually draws you into the excitement of the playing.

The songs are good too, but I would much rather just hear instrumentals. His voice isn't bad, its just not fantastic. You don't mind it though since the playing is so good.

This CD is worth getting just for live portion. A friend from Lebanon gave me a tape of this CD that his uncle sent him. I liked the tape so much I had to order the CD!
