Great Music, but..........2007-07-08

Although the cover of this disc was slightly cracked on arrival, it did not affect the disc itself. Anyone who loves Schubert lieder would want to hear this. Unfortunately, there was no accompanying printout of the words and translations which usually come with discs of lieder. Even being familiar with some of the songs, this lack is obvious because not all of the words are known by heart, and not all of the songs are familiar. If I had known in advance that this was missing, I would have chosen a disc other than EMI.

You will never spend a better $7.......2006-11-05

This is spectacular -- masterfully performed, beautiful, superlative. I can't say enough about it. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was born to sing Schubert's Lieder. Granted, the disk's sound quality leaves a little to be desired, and Moore's piano could stand to be brought to the fore a little more, but if you love music, you will love this. Knowledge of German is not necessary, and indeed may detract from the power of the music and its expression (initially).

Thank you Franz Schubert, Gerald Moore, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau -- the world is a better place for the cross-centuries collaboration represented here.

I certainly can't fault Fischer Diskau and Moore. I certainly do fault a Leider recording that is supplied without the words!
Lieder are song settings of poems. Without knowning the poems it is imposssible to fully appreciate the music.

A sad disappointment.

Great collection and performance.......2005-05-22

These are wonderful performances and a good selection of songs. Those familiar with Schubert's chamber music will recognize "Der Tod und das Mädchen", which is the basis of the variations in the 2nd movement of the "Death and the Maiden" quartet (D. 810), and "Die Forelle" from the theme and variations in the fourth movement of the Trout Quintet (Forellenquintet).

The previous reviewer is well-intentioned, but evidently does not understand the text of these songs, which makes me wonder if any translations are provided with this CD. For example, he says "Die Forelle, which is the last song on here, is a happier story. It tells of a fisherman and a fish."

It's quite an unhappy story, in fact. However, there should be plenty of information available online about these songs and the poems Schubert set, as well as about Schubert.

The following is not completely accurate: "Tragically, he died of syphillis while he was still in his 30's but he had written over hundreds of great musical compositions and 600 songs. Among his finest are the Lieder, the Winteressen"...

It's true that Schubert contracted syphillis as a young man, but he died (at the age of 31) of typhus. The song cycle referred to is "Die Winterreise", or Winter Journey, not "Winteressen" (essen, to eat; das Essen, a meal, food, etc.)

You will get far more out of this music if you understand German, or have access to decent translations of the text.

The previous reviewer states about the songs, oddly, that "Many of them are poetry set to music". They are ALL poems set to music. Some of Schubert's settings are of poems written by personal friends, some are of poems by minor poets (such as the settings of poems by Friedrich Rückert in this collection). The source didn't have to be Goethe or Schiller for Schubert to do something brilliant with it.

Amazon consistently fails to get the German titles right, except by accident in the case of one- or two-word titles consisting of words without umlauts.

Schubert's Greatest Art Songs.......2004-06-17

This album is an absolute must for fans of Lieder and moreover for fans of baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. On this EMI recording- a collection of Franz Schubert's Lieder for lyric baritone voice and piano. Dieskau provides the voice and Gerald Moore is on the piano. It's heavenly music. It would compliment your collection of opera, chamber music or other Schubert music perfectly. Franz Schubert lived and died during the same time as Beethoven and it was likely he was overshadowed by Beethoven's greatness. Nevertheless, after Schubert's death and throughout the 20th century, his music was finally acknowledged as having great merit. With Beethoven, Schubert pioneered the first budding of the Romantic movement that would endure throughout the 19th century up to 1900. Sometimes, Schubert's music comes dangerously close to sounding like Beethoven. The classical restraint is evident in some of the more romantic, lyrical slower movements but the dramatics and fortissimo of the Romantic Era was there in some of the more dynamic allegro passages. Schubert was a Romantic. Tragically, he died of syphillis while he was still in his 30's but he had written over hundreds of great musical compositions and 600 songs. Among his finest are the Lieder, the Winteressen, and his symphonies, among them the 8th "Unfinished Symphony" and the 9th the Great Symphony in C Major as well as incidental music and overtures and a wealth of piano trios and chamber music.

Dieskau is perfectly suited for singing the Lieder. His voice radiates with shine and poetic balance for these simple, elegant parlor songs. Many of them are poetry set to music, romantic thoughts about nature and love, etc, trademarks of the Romantic Age. He set music to the writings of Goethe. Among these is the moving and tragic Die Erlkonig. This is about the Elf King who is also Death and takes the life of an ill young boy who is carried in his father's arms as they ride on horseback to their home. But he dies in his father's arms after hallucinating about the Elf King. Dieskau makes this moment sound very real. Die Forelle, which is the last song on here, is a happier story. It tells of a fisherman and a fish. The music seems to imitate the flow of a stream and the swimming of a fish. It's the most German song I can think of. Beautiful and pleasant to hear.

Delightful!.......2007-01-19

What a beautful voice and such an artist. I've always loved Wunderlich's voice and this album was such a delightful surprise to happen across. The Pearl Fishers' duet with Herman Prey is spectacular--it would be even better than Bjoerling/Merrill if it were in the original French!

A Great and Varied Collection.......2005-12-19

Fritz Wunderlich is a name that is familiar to opera buffs, at least those who enjoy the great singers of the past, but his name is not as familiar with the general public. It probably would have been, had it not been for a tragic and fluke accident that claimed his life. For those who are familiar with this great tenor, he's a beloved musician that makes listeners wonder what could have been.

Wunderlich's voice is one that can be light and airy at times, yet it can also have a dramatic intensity. This two disc set includes a variety of pieces that display Wunderlich's wide range and great vocal talent. His excerpts from Mozart are perhaps his strongest. So often the tenor roles in Mozart operas are cast with performers who are agile and can reach the higher notes, but their voices are somewhat weak. Wunderlich shows just how beautiful these arias can be. The same holds true for his arias from EUGENE ONEGIN and the pieces from well known operettas. His "Au Fond De Temple Saint" performed with Hermann Prey (a dream team pairing if there ever was one) is close to the Bjorling/Merrill rendition. We see his versatility in the excerpt from Haydn's CREATION and the live performance of "Di Rigori Armato" from DER ROSENKAVALIER is a treat and allows the listener to compare his live and studio recordings. The bonus DVD has a few slight flaws, but we see, at least in the scenes from THE BARBER OF SEVILLE that he not only has a wonderful voice but a good stage presence as well.

Most of the tracks are performed in German, even the Bellini, Bizet, and Verdi tracks, as was the case in many of the recordings of famous German singers. This may detract at first, especially of we expect to hear gorgeous French singing and it comes out, well German sounding. Still, it's a wonderful set with great variety and shows us what we missed in this tenor whose career had just begun.

MAGIC is a good word to describe Fritz Wunderlich.......2005-11-08

Magic is a good word to describe Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966), and if you aren't already familiar with his work, you'll see why when you experience this CD.

Many of the tracks are not new to CDs: I'd say 50% of them are also in the "Art of Fritz Wunderlich" set (DG, 7 CDs), including Handel, Mozart, Bellini, and other opera arias. There are 3 tracks from "Don Giovanni" which I had not encountered elsewhere, and a scene from Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" + 5 Strauss Lieder (with orchestra) not previously released in recent years.

Wunderlich was never less than the very best, and here is no exception. The bonus DVD has almost 30 minutes of scenes of Wunderlich (Count Almaviva) in Rossini's "Barber of Seville", sung in German with Hermann Prey (Figaro) and Erika Koth (Rosina) from a 1959 black and white TV production, in very good mono sound; and two scenes from Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin", also sung in German, and with a young Brigitte Fassbaender (a little more hiss but very good, full, rich mono sound). The Rossini is available from English sources, and hopefully will be available in the US soon.

Like conductor Karl Bohm (1894-1981), I'm going to try to get as much Fritz Wunderlich material as I can find, CD or DVD, as is practical (and even when it isn't!).

How can you judge a performance when a CD contains no texts? Unless your command of German is excellent (mine is just fair) you will not understand the words. The singer may or may not be doing justice to the poems -- you won't be able to tell. Given that the texts come from the best German poets, this is just a shame.

The early artist at his best!.......2005-07-26

The great thing about Fidi is that he has never made a bad recording. And here he is, fairly early in his career, with his collaborator Sir Gerald Moore, and they seem to have learned the lieder trade from each other. I mean, with current studio recording artists, you've got to imagine they do retakes when they make technical errors. But with Fidi and Moore, you actually hear some muffs now and then. What they really concentrate on is the poetic vision of the works. So that interpretation really is the hallmark.

There aren't many bothering with recordings of these works today. You wonder why? It's because they know that can't do them better than Fisher-Dieskau and Moore. It just doesn't get any better.

You really need to buy this while it's still available and at these rock bottom prices.

Schubert and Fischer Dieskau at their best.......2000-06-14

While the lieder of shubert are arguably the most sensitive and best in the whole repertoire, Fischer Dieskau is indisputably the best lied performer of all times. When trying to have a first taste with this great music the main quesion is where to start? DG's collection of Shubert Lieder's interpretation by Fischer Dieskau is comprised of two huge boxes (9 CD each) and a separate box (3 CDs) with the very famous song cycles. This CD of EMI which is sold in mid-price can be an outstanding starting point to enjoy many of Scubert's best songs. This CD does not include songs from the song cycles so these can be bought later without overlapping. If you have started with the genius song-cycles and don't want at this stage to buy DG's boxes you can have a taste from his other best songs in this CD. Don't miss it.

Who ever said German is not a beautiful language hasn't heard this album. I give it 5 stars. I only wish I understood what the h@ll the lyrics meant.

wonderful cd, ur genial!.......2003-02-17

2raumwohnung has to be one of the best band I've discovered in a very long time, because their music is sinply amazing. On their CD's you have songs for all different kinds of moods and occasions, catchy electro pop to dance and sing along to like "ich und elaine", mellow chill songs to listen to lounging on your couch like "weil es liebe ist", listening to Inga Humpe's amazing voice, and some guitar indie feeling songs "nimm mich mit-auf das abenteurer liebe usw". The different interpretations of songs are also amazing and convey different feels to them. The CD really makes German sound very soothing and beautiful. what can I say, 2raumwohnung ist ur genial!!

Inga Humpe ist keine Unbekannte.......2003-02-07

... the sound and lyrics really give some 80s feeling - this is due to the fact, that Inga Humpe was in the charts in Germany in the 80s already. Tis is a *good* thing in this case! The so called 'neue deutsche Welle' was the german breed of new wave music in the early 80s. This music was always ironic with some 'sad but true' lines added. After working on different projects since, she now made it to a very relaxed and sophisticated sound that I immediately liked, just like the 80s hit 'Codo der Dritte' with DÖF (listen to it, if you get a chance). The lyrics are contemporary colloquial german but should not be too difficult to understand....

Superb.......2003-01-10

This album is a true treasure you can't miss. The beats are very 21st century-electro with a splash of 80s retro and very nice vocals sung in German by Inga Humpe. The lyrics are very catchy, sometimes simple but at the same time intelligent and meaningful. At times the CD reminds me of Artful Dodger with a bit more lyrics and storytelling. It is also a nice CD to discover the beauty of the German language, it might sometimes sound peculiar but it is very unique indeed. So go buy it, it's worth the money.

This is an amazing collection of arias from the early 1900s through the 1930s (there is one 1942 cut). The sound transfers, made from pristine 78 records, are excellent, especially considering the age of the recordings. This CD is a splendid overview of the outstanding artists of their day, and while many of them are no longer (opera) household names, their singing is first rate. Not only would this be a great CD for an opera history buff, it is also excellent for someone just learning about opera and wanting to hear opera legends. The price for 5 CDs, each over an hour's worth of listening, is a steal.

One of the greatest tenors ever.......2005-03-15

When Fritz Wunderlich died (tragically, in an accident) at the
age of 36, some of Opera's greatest experts and critics were
devastated and called his death a "heavy blow to music."

How true. Wunderlich never had the chance to get international
exposure at the level modern tenors do. He lived in the "wrong era", before media hype, and he died youg - much too young.

Yet even today, Wunderlich experiences a remarkable renaissance.
The world has (re-)discovered this gorgeous voice. Monaco and
Corelli had more power (though not much more), Bjoerling's and
Pavarotti's and Joseph Schmidt's timbres were more ringing (though not much more), Di Stefano and Carreras sang more sweetly (though not much more), and Bergonzi's and Tucker's belcanti were fabulous.

But hardly any of those had all thoe qualities combined like Fritz Wunderlich. Listen to his breathtaking musicality when he sang Mozart, his effortless height, his clear diction (probably unparalleled by any opera singer ever), his phrasing, his passion when he sang Verdi or Puccini.

And his height ... has there ever been a tenor who could reach,
seemingly without effort, the high D (no printing mistake...)
the way he did in "Granada" ?

And not just that he hit the high notes. It's how he hit them:
with expression, intelligence and, wherever required (mainly in
song and operetta), with wit and charm.

His Lieder are exemplary, his Italian songs probably more impressive than most Italian tenors'.

If one imagines that Wunderlich was just at the beginning of his career, one shudders at how great he would have become. I think he would have been mentioned in one breath with Caruso and Gigli.

What a huge loss to music, indeed.

One Of The Finest Male Singers We Will Ever Know.......2000-10-29

I don't claim to know a great deal about opera and my knowledge of great classical music singers -- German or otherwise -- is limited to the usual list of suspects and divas. But as far as I'm concerned, Fritz Wunderlich possessed one of the greatest God-given voices you will ever hear in ANY type of Western music. If you ever wondered why so many music critics still lament this man's tragic death before he could become a household name, I would advise you to purchase this collection. Good Lord, what a voice! Believe me, once you hear ol' Fritz belt out a few tunes, you won't be thinking of any other male singer in any other type of music (whether it's Pavrotti, Domingo, Melchior, Vickers, Fischer-Dieskau, Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, Billy Eckstine, Elvis, George Jones, Sam Cooke or even Bob Dylan) for some time. Herr Wunderlich was simply in a class by himself, and you are also strongly urged to get his EMI recording with Christa Ludwig and Otto Klemperer of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. Be warned, though, on that one. Not only will he shatter your heart with his singing of Mahler's sad lyrics, but he's liable to cause you lockjaw with his unique, incomparable phrasing.
