A Hundred Miles or More carries the subtitle A Collection, and what a curious collection it is--cuts from soundtracks, side projects, and tribute albums, plus guest duets on other artists' albums and five previously unreleased tracks. In other words, this is a collection of Alison Krauss performances that have never appeared on an Alison Krauss album, though it holds together better than such a grab-bag approach might suggest. Highlights such as her duet with Brad Paisley on "Whiskey Lullaby" and her a cappella rendition of "Down to the River to Pray" from O Brother, Where Art Thou? will be familiar to most Krauss fans, though it's doubtful that many share her infatuation with retro rocker John Waite (with whom she revives his "Missing You" and duets on a cover of Don Williams's "Lay Down Beside Me."). Other projects represented range from Disney to the Chieftains to the Louvin Brothers (she duets with James Taylor on their "How's the World Treating You." There's minimal contribution from her Union Station band--making this a solo release by default--and little information to indicate whether the previously unreleased tracks were outtakes from earlier releases or recently recorded for this one. --Don McLeese

The album features Krauss's collaboration with John Waite on the single "Missing You," as well as Krauss's contributions to film soundtracks, including the Oscar-nominated songs "The Scarlet Tide" and "You Will Be My Ain True Love," written for the motion picture "Cold Mountain," and "Down to the River to Pray" from the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" I love her sweetness and clarity. She revisits gospel and olde tyme toe tappers and make you want to stomp your feet, get up and clap and say "Amen". I don't believe Alison Krauss could produce any thing that you wouldn't like. Sort of like Emmy Lou Harris. Just gifted.

Many remakes dot this album. Some very surprising collabrations. AK could have done very standard remakes, but instead reinvented many songs. I prefer Simple Love, which is not a remake, Sawing on Strings, a very traditional bluegrass song. These are two songs she is singing on her current tour with Union Station. She does not sing any of the duet songs on this album on her current tour.

Though the arrangements stray from Lucinda Williams's motherlode blend of blues, country, and folk, West may well be her best album. It is easily her most musically adventurous, and often her most lyrically inspired. Williams's singing has never sounded better, from the aching tenderness of "Where Is My Love?" to the ravaged catharsis of "Unsuffer Me." New York producer Hal Willner, who has worked with artists such as Marianne Faithful and Lou Reed, enlists the support of eclectic progressives like guitarist Bill Frisell, keyboardist Bob Burger, and violinist Jenny Scheinman, along with harmonies from the Jayhawks' Gary Louris, to weave a subtly rich sonic tapestry. Much of the material was inspired by the death of Williams's beloved mother ("Mama You Sweet," "Fancy Funeral") and the bitter breakup of a relationship (the jagged-edged emasculation of "Come On," the repetitive incantation of "Wrap My Head Around That"), though "Are You Alright?," "Learning How to Live," and "Everything Has Changed" could reflect the aftermath of both. Other highlights include "Rescue," with a languid subtlety and ambient pulse reminiscent of Beth Orton, and the dreamy, wistful title track. Maturity in a Musical Master.......2007-08-05

Very impressed with this CD. Entirely new to Lucinda Williams - purchased this CD based on a recommendation by Bill Flannagan, the music critic. This album is sometimes painfully sad, sometimes beautiful, to bear the pain. About death in many ramifications, it seems. One to keep, perhaps a classic (my rating is conservative). Well worth owning, if it suits you, a blend of folk, rock, and country. I enjoyed William's unique and beautiful voice, her mature and complex individual musical expression on the human condition, whether in the now or more universal.

She doesn't rock out a lot which suits me fine, because you really get to appreciate her skill with words and hear that voice...aaahhhh what a voice!

I first heard cuts from this album, on the "Imus In The Morning" show, earlier this year. He has such a great ear for music, and I liked what I heard on his show. The album is very earthy, and soulful. Lucinda Williams is a powerful singer/songwriter, and "West" is the perfect showcase for her talent. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys soulful, Americana music.

The title and cover art effectively tell the story of this dusty gem. Captured fly-on-the-wall style in an impromptu live-in-the-studio burst after a Judy Collins session on which the 23-year-old Stephen Stills played, the soon-to-be ex-leader of Buffalo Springfield (and Collins's ex-boyfriend) unleashes unplugged, occasionally incomplete versions of songs he had recently written and wanted to get on tape. Discovered in 1978 and nearly discarded, the reels found their way to Graham Nash in 2003, who encouraged Stills to release them. He finally did so in 2007, nearly 40 years after the original session, and the result is the most revelatory album in Stills's bulging catalog. Even with remastering, the sound is on the crude side. Nevertheless, early takes of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "Helplessly Hoping," and "Wooden Ships," all of which would appear in far more polished versions on Crosby, Stills & Nash's self-titled debut, are sung with a passion and honesty seldom exposed by the singer/songwriter. Stills's voice sometimes cracks, his guitar work intermittently sounds muddy, and these are definitely works in progress, some of which never appeared on an official release. Yet the artist is caught arguably at the peak of his substantial talents, laying down soon-to-be-classic melodies while they were fresh in his head. Folk/rock historians and Stills fans will surely be thrilled with this nascent, unvarnished set. This one will take you back!.......2007-08-01

My first exposure to Stills was listening to Suite Judy Blues Eyes on the Woodstock album. I was sixteen when it came out. Even listening with my girlfriend's cheap plastic speakers plastered against my ears, I could tell Stephen was amazing. Now, after being a fan for 36 years, Just Roll Tape brings it all back. This album is a good reminder of how groundbreaking Stephen's talents were and have been through the years. I've loved many of his songs since the 60's, but there is absolutely nothing to compare with the spirit he showed in the beginning.

Great Solo Session- Stills Acoustic!.......2007-07-30

Great solo showcase for Stephen Stills with a new batch of songs, about to be unleashed (some of them) with CSN. The half finished Wooden Ships does indicate that Crosby and Kantner did contribute to this Stills idea for a song. And Suite:Judy Blue Eyes was just waiting for Crosby to add his DOO-DOO-DOO-DOOS to make it into a complete masterpiece.

A Master at Work.......2007-07-29

WOW!! This is truly a long lost treasure! An acoustic studio session recorded after a Judy Collins recording session. Stills is just beginning to reach the height of his powers, Buffalo Springfield is breaking up and CSN is yet to be. These "demos" are more powerful than most of what passes for music today. It is interesting to listen to these grittier versions of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Helplessly Hoping" and compare them to the more polished CSN versions. This "American Idol" generation of listeners may not get the "singer/songwriter" generation , so if you are looking for something slick, look elsewhere. BUT if you want see inner the workings of a man who help change the face of rock music for a generation this is a great entre.

Magic moment frozen in time...........2007-07-29

First, to the guy who said when Stills picks up an electric, "forget it", please be referred to (1) his latest effort, "Man Alive", and (2) the Judy Collins record, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", during which sessions he recorded these demos. That was a long time ago, and he plays immensely tasteful licks behind Collins. Second, thank God they left the hiss in, which is why the whole thing sounds like Stills had just recorded it and handed you his demo! The beauty of something like this is simply that it gives you a window into something you never thought you'd be able to experience. At this point Stills was creating some of the most finely-crafted stuff around, in full and remarkable voice, and better still, was completely uninhibited by the demands of an audience or stardom. Sure, this material is for fans. There are a lot of them, too. What a beautiful gift this is to all of them.

As it should be..........2007-07-28

Many people have already touched on the key elements of this disk:
Uneven sound, great story in terms historical and personal context, excellent snapshot on some of Stills' biggest hits, etc. I have always been a huge fan of CSNY and all their configurations, but have also been supremely frustrated by so much of the over produced crap that has come out over the years. The irony is that a lot of the studio manipulation was at the hands of Stills who could apparently not leave well enough alone. Neil has been much better about putting things out warts and all, allowing his soul to pour out of the speakers. Well, Mr. Stills and Rhino Records, thank you VERY MUCH for pulling this one out of the dusty stack. This is great stuff peaking with an incredible Helplessly Hoping, which I listened to three times while sitting in the driveway after buying this disk. It has been a number of years, but this more than makes up for the hideous alternate version of H.H. found on the CSN box set. Stills has always had tremendous soul, but he would not allow it to really come through on an official release. Any other raw treasures you have, I will snap them up...

Better known as the "White Album," this was meant to be the record that brought them back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. Instead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of rock's towering figures. But even McCartney could still rock, and the amazement on "Helter Skelter" was that he had vocal cords at the end. This Cd ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! It's my favorite beatles album. It has a different veriety of songs. For Some songs you just have to appriciate the music instead of the lyrics like "why don't we do it in the road?"
The Only one i don't like is "Yer Blues". It's Like their solo albums. The Best CD i ever herd!!!!!!!!!!!!

Breaking the Barriers.......2007-06-29

This was the album where the Beatles grew up and moved into a more mature and less organised sound. That road had begun with "A Day In a Life" and "Within You Without You" and "Good Morning" in Sgt Peppers - but the Beatles were still a smart pop rock band then.

In the White Album, there is a wonderful sense of a loss of control - and yet this is still the Beatles at their creative peak. Not caring what people think, they're just playing to the maximum of their abilities. And shattering barriers.

The power of their varied personalities comes through. And different sides of their personality. Who cares about anything except the music I'm feeling now? seems to be the prevalent thought here. The White Album is the Beatles Matured - who would have imagined that the Beatles would create "Helter Skelter"? or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...Epic stuff that certified that the Beatles could rock. "Dear Prudence" and "Sexy Sadie" and "Blackbird" are eminently listenable. In fact - apart from some ditties and departures - the album is strikingly distinctive as a playground of sounds - it is dynamic from one end to the other and still eminently listenable and deep.

How do you define genius? This is one hard album to ignore.

Wow...this brings back great memories. The songs are so diverse and unusual, showing their true talent and creative song writing abilities. The songs are fun and strange all at the same time. It is one of my favorites of the Beatles. When you can have "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Rocky Raccoon" and "Blackbird" in one package....what more can you ask!

after purchasing my first patti g. cd(1000 kisses) a few months ago, i had to have another. after receiving this cd, i wondered where patti had been all of my life. trapeze and burgandy shoes give me chills from head to toe. i love to hold my baby girl and dance in the kitchen to heavenly day....makes me cry. can't stop listening to this cd!!!

Not up to her standard.......2007-07-23

First off, I have always liked Griffin's music, the haunting melodies, the piercing lyrics, the purity of her voice, all fantanstic.

Sadly, this cd is not up to her best. She seems to be trying to make a more 'upbeat' and accessible cd, but I feel that this approach has led her astray. Too often the lyrics are trite and obvious, and the melodies are lost in guitars being banged. Her wonderful voice is still strong, but too often she adopts the modern 'warbling' which cames across as unauthentic. Maybe she's trying to reach out to a wider audience and I guess from all the positive reviews she has succeeded to some extent.

But if you're a fan of her previous work, you're likely to be a little dissappointed here. Not once in listening to this cd did I get those rushes of emotion that I always get from her. The album sounds rushed to me, or maybe she didn't get proper help from a good producer. Eitherway, this is Griffin 'lite.' Sounds like her, but the punch just ain't there.

Her Finest Hour.......2007-07-10

I've always been a sorta-kinda fan of Patty Griffin, but each of her prior albums has suffered from a few (or more) dud songs, and moments where her voice struggles against notes that she just can't hit very well. Finally an album where these problems are nearly absent! It's amazing how gracefully she's aging; her voice has never sounded so good. A couple tracks took some time to grow on me, but now I can honestly say it's a pleasure for me to listen to this album from beginning to end without skipping a single track. And as for the standout tracks...I would name them, but there are about seven of them. (Though "No Bad News" and "Up to the Mountain" are among the best songs she's ever recorded.) I can't wait to hear her next album, but if Children Running Through ends up being her masterpiece, that's good enough for me.

I wish I could square the 5 star rating. I was familiar with Patty Griffin's songs long before I heard her beautiful voice. She is a marvel. I normally need to warm up to new music before I start to enjoy it. This lovely collection was my current favorite the first time I heard it. Heavenly Day is now my "happy place" when I need one. I'd give Patty a hug if I could reach far enough. Thanks for the good times!

Patty Griffin is a storyteller. Rarely confessional or self-indulgent, she tells tales, assumes personas and takes the listener deep into the lives of her characters. Each persona has her or his own musical interpretation, deepening and strengthening the voice. In "Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)," Griffin assumes the voice of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and puts herself into to the head and heart of a man working for a vision and a dream. Hope seems to be a theme on this latest effort, as is travel. "Stay on the Ride" has a man riding the bus day in and day out because "it's gonna take me somewhere." Griffin takes some musical risks and periodically diverges from her comfortable style, as in the jazzier tones of the opening track, "You'll Remember," and the gospel-infused strains of "Heavenly Day" and "Up to the Mountain." "Trapeze" showcases a gorgeous duet with the master of harmonies, Emmylou Harris. Patty Griffin is an artist who has hit her stride and stayed there for years. This album proves her staying power and continued ability to move, inspire and entertain.

How did two Mexican-born heavy-metal enthusiasts end up at the top of the Irish charts? The story begins back in their homeland, where Rodrigo Sanchez (lead guitar) and Gabriela Quintero (rhythm and guitar-top hand percussion) met as teenagers. Following years of fruitless struggle, they settled in Dublin, working as street entertainers, eventually wandering as far afield as Denmark and Spain. But over time, their virtuoso duo-guitar instrumentals garnered them a following, which in turn led to indoor engagements where they no longer had to freeze their hands off. The sleeve photo of a crocodile's eye with a faint image of Rodrigo and Gabriela superimposed, suits the artists' desire for something which didn't shout "Mexican guitarists" or "Couples." "It reminded us of Tamacun, the famous Mexican eccentric who is in Ixtapa where we lived for a while".

Tamacun -"Tamacun's message is to teach kids to respect nature." He handles crocodiles, and tourists come to photograph him.

Diablo Rojo - Inspired by a wild rollercoaster called 'Red Devil' at a theme park in Copenhagen, Denmark. Three rides in a row, each.

Viking Man - Another Danish inspired piece. The Viking Man was a homeless guy who encouraged Rod & Gab to tough it out on the streets, busking in minus zero conditions at Christmastime. John Leckie adds radio static.

Satori - Experiencing self doubt shortly after arriving in Ireland, Rodrigo y Gabriela were at a low ebb. No money, poor English and a deep sense of uncertainty. Only an unshakeable faith in perseverance kept them going. Satori describes the Zen - like moment of enlightenment they felt when they came through the storm.

Ixtapa - "Ixtapa is a very beautiful, very Mexican town." Roby Lakatos' wildly soaring violin solo is a perfect counterpoint to the melodic and percussive guitars.

Stairway to Heaven - "Ixtapa was our very own Stairway to Heaven!" Rod & Gab's take was initially inspired by Stanley Jordan's interpretation of the Led Zep warhorse. Growing from snippets in their live show, their unique version is at once both respectful and innovative.

Orion - This epic reworking of the Metallica song is the second time Rodrigo y Gabriela have covered Messrs Hetfield, Ulrich & Co: "A tribute to the style of music we love, it's what kept us playing the guitar through all those Spinal Tap years"

Juan Loco - The first attempt at recording this album in Mexico in Summer 2005 resulted in three weeks of sunbathing, beer drinking and power cuts. Enter Mr John Leckie, legendary producer of Radiohead, The Stone Roses and Muse, to name but a few; to midwife Rod & Gab's musical vision into what you hear today. 'Juan Loco' ('Mad John') is their Mexican nickname for Mr Leckie.

PPA - "The first P of PPA stands for Pinche, a Mexican term meaning f**king asshole. This is for all the people in the music business who think they know what's going on but actually don't have a clue".

I bought the CD because I had heard Tamacun on the radio. I made the purchase with some trepidation because usually there is only one or two -- maybe three, if one is lucky -- tracks that are any good on a given CD. Well, I lucked out!!! This CD is SOLID! Not a weak track anywhere. Well...maybe a couple, (Stairway to Heaven and another one that I can't think of -- it has a violin) but that's in comparison to the rest of the CD. I can't comment on the technique or musicianship; all I can say is that I looove this CD. It's good music, through and through. So good, I get requests for it at work!

Not the highest quality recording.......2007-07-30

While the music is excellent, the recording production is not
very good. Extraneous noise and glitches are evident,
especially in track 3, where there is actually noise
and bleed-in recorded onto the track, interfering with
the song for a few seconds
(sounds like radio freqencies are being picked
up from an errant amp). Rather than editing or re-cutting
the track, this noise was left in and detracts
significantly from track 3. In my opinion, this was
sloppy production. I rate the performance of
Rodrigo & Gabriella 5 stars.

If you like Spanish/flamenco guitar music, you will really like this album. Although R & G claim that this is not traditional flamenco music, it has the exact flavor of flamenco. BTW wonderful and wild solos by Rodrigo as he flies up and down the guitar fretboard.

Stairway to Heaven version is beautiful, jazzy and latin.

One usually doesn't think of men as being classic torch singers, but with UP FRONT AND DOWN LOW, New York-based young Brit singer/songwritier Teddy Thompson makes a stunning claim to that style of heart-achey pop music. Backed with tasteful arrangements on classic country tunes and his one original, Thompson unleashes his clear, plaintive and often soaring tenor to astonishing effect - particularly on "Walking the Floor Over You", "My Heart Echoes", "She Thinks I Still Care", Dolly Partron's "My Blue Tears" and his own "Down Low". Thompson delivers terrific phrasing on all tracks, especially putting over the wonderfully sarcastic edge of "You Finally Said Something Good (When You Said Goodbye)", which opens with a jaunty string quartet cakewalk. That number and the witty "Let's Think About Living" are the most upbeat among the album's 12 listed and one hidden track, a sweet and mournful "Don't Ask Me to Be Friends". Fresh and innovative.......2007-07-22

This is the best (new) album I've heard in years. The arrangements are
great. It sure beats 99% of what's being released as country music-
even though this CD is in the "pop" section at the stores.

Teddy Thompson is my kind of singer-not trying to sound like anybody
else (even though there is a little, but less twangy, Dwight Yoakam
in a couple of the tracks). I hope he does some more of the older
country classics with a couple of his own songs thrown in.

I could only rate this album 5 stars, but would have rated it higher.

I guess this is technically a country album, but he brings a very folk/alt vibe to these songs. The result is just beautiful. Really, from start to finish. The emotion carried in his voice is so very moving. Just so soulful and touching.
If country isn't your "thing" I still say there is a place in any alt-rock collection for this CD. Perfect for a night of missing that certain someone. Perfect for a night of drowning your sorrows. Perfect for that long trip you didn't want to make in the first place. Ah, it's just perfect.

No longer "just" the son of.............................2007-07-19

Richard and Linda Thompson. I first heard of Teddy Thompson on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack and have purchased all of his CD's. This one is no disappointment. As a country music fan, I love this CD so far, after just 2 listens. Teddy hits all the right notes, metaphorically speaking, and uses just the right amount of great backup vocals and musicians. I am taking a road trip this weekend and can't wait to crank up the speakers and listen to this CD several times in about 6 hours.

He's too cool for the room (so join the cult).......2007-07-18

When last I considered Teddy Thomp'son, he was building his cult. A very elite cult, because 'Separate Ways seemed to be so special that you could say, well, a lot of people just didn't have ears good enough for it.

Except it wasn't "special." And it wasn't "too good." It was great writing and great music and a remarkable voice, start to finish, without a single dud. I don't know why only a few of my nearest and dearest flipped for it. Maybe because it was depressing, in a wonderfully funny way.

Like this line: "I wish when the phone rang/it wasn't always you."

Not exactly a universal sentiment, is it?

So let's call Teddy Thompson an acquired taste --- until the day one of his songs becomes an unlikely hit and tens of thousands rush back to fall in love with all the great music they so breezily rejected.

And what of the follow-up to "Separate Ways"?

It's no follow-up at all. "Upfront & Down Low" is country. Classic country, if you will: songs by George Jones, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, the Everly Brothers, Elvis. Thompson uses a standard backup band, but he adds a string section, courtesy of the arranger responsible for the strings on Nick Drake's CDs.

Sounds like a vanity project? Not in the least. Teddy Thompson --- who didn't hear music that wasn't country until he was 16 --- understands this music completely. And delivers it authentically. But that understates. What happens in "Upfront & Down low" is captured magic, the alchemy of great taste and a compelling voice.

I went to see Teddy Thompson preview this CD in a downtown club. It was one of those rare nights: a small room, no more than a hundred people in the audience, all of them very much on the singer's side. Two violinists, a cellist and a string bass player came onstage first, then a drummer and a slide guitarist, then Thompson. Hard to miss him --- he was wearing a white suit. "I'm from the corporate office of Willie Wonka," he explained.

Naturally he apologized for the tone of the songs: "These songs are depressing. That's what country music is about."

But the songs needed no apology. They were flawless, if not exactly fun, and the title song, which he wrote, just might be the best. That song was, of course, the most depressing. Funny. I can't get it out of my head.

The last time Bruce Springsteen gave up E Street for Folk Street, the band of fiddles, banjos, and accordions--sans audience--was recording 2006's We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions in the informality of his living room. This time the Boss takes his American-music foray to Ireland for a three-night stint on the north quay of Dublin's River Liffey. Great fun with something to think about.......2007-07-28

Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions; Band Live In Dublin.
If you were lucky enough to see Bruce on this tour you have an idea how fun this Cd is. Like any great artists Springsteen can give you something fun with a little extra to think about. In some cases as with Born In The USA most listeners didn't understand what he was saying at all. I saw Sting a fews years back and he mentioned his dismay at how people have interpreted Every Breath You Take as a love song and some couples were actually using it as a wedding song.
The Dublin Sessions is a 2 disc set filled with many of the folk songs from the Seeger Sessions, full of defiance, perseverance and struggle. The hole CD is reminiscent of a John Steinbeck novel. Somehow Springsteen takes all this heaviness and makes it fun to listen to. The live shows were great fun filled with that tinge in the back of your mind reminding you about the horrors of war and the plight of the common man.
I had wondered why Bruce had decided to record the concert in Dublin. I thought maybe he was continuing his trip around the world, Asbury Park, E Street, Nebraska, USA and Dublin. When I heard Mrs. McGrath I knew in an instant why he picked Dublin and it was a great choice.
Some of the best parts of this CD are of Springsteen's own tunes recorded live with the "Sessions Band" Atlantic City, Gowin' Up and Blinded By The Light all have a fresh and unusual that you should find exciting.

I almost didn't buy "Live in Dublin" because it contained several songs I already had on "We Shall Overcome." However, due to the fact that my daughter gave me a gift certificate for my birthday and the price was right ($11.99), I felt I had nothing to lose.

Clearly, The Boss was having a good time in Dublin. His voice cracks, croaks and groans at times, but it's still vintage Springsteen. The backup band is outstanding. Normally, you couldn't mix bluegrass fiddles with a horn section on a single recording. But somehow, they pull it off - and it sounds great.

He also completely rearranges "Atlantic City" and "Blinded By the Light" to the point where they're all new songs. You have to play the haunting "When the Saints Go Marching In" a few times to enjoy it.

My personal favorites are "Long Time Coming" and "Further Down the Road," although there are only a few songs that I consider filler crap.

Crank it up. It's summer. It's definitely Springsteen.

Powerful, raucous, joyful, heartbreaking.......2007-07-13

I'll echo the other reviewers and say that this is undoubtedly the best live CD I've ever heard, a testament to a combination of the music, lyrics, players, and timeliness of the message.

Springsteen is almost impossible to review, but I'll just say that, as much as I loved the Rising, Live in Barcelona, and Devils and Dust, the Seeger Sessions and this live album have taken him into a musical stratosphere that maybe only Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson can touch -- pure Americana.

Most of the other reviewers have adequately pointed out the highlights, but I'll say that the mournful dirge that the band transformed "When the Saints Come Marching In" to made tears stream down my face when I first heard this version, especially as it comes in the set after "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live". Folk music is as relevant as it ever was.

If you like any strain of Americana roots music -- blues, folk, jazz, gospel, Western swing, roots country, mountain/Scots/Irish music -- this concert will blow you away and make you sing with the crowd.

Back in the '80s and '90s, Richard Thompson could be depended upon to release a well-crafted collection of Celtic-influenced folk-rock every few years. But when he left Capitol after 1999's Mock Tudor, Thompson headed off on side projects, all of typically high quality, but not the solo albums his established cult expected. Those fans can now rejoice, because on Sweet Warrior Thompson roars back with his first electric set of originals since 2003, and it's a winner. As the disc's title implies, he revisits the familiar territory of love as a battlefield in these 14 originals. The concept is emphasized by a liner photo of the singer/songwriter in army gear and camouflage flanked by two beautiful women planting kisses on either cheek. Supported by longtime backing cohorts, the guitarist adds to his six-string talents with occasional mandolin, autoharp, accordion, and even organ, all used as icing on a cake of tunes that further refine his established style. Perhaps the most startling song is the viciously anti-war "Dad's Going to Kill Me," about a soldier stationed in Baghdad (the "Dad" of the title), wondering if he will survive another day. "Guns are the Tongues" finds Thompson telling the tragic tale of a young man enticed by a woman's charms ending up as a suicide-bombing terrorist. Thompson's dramatic guitar solos are kept on low boil, occasionally bubbling up but never hogging the spotlight. Literate rocker Richard Thompson's new album, Sweet Warrior, is a return to his classic electric sound, his first plugged-in album since 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Filled with 14 songs of stories of loss and betrayal, the album also contains one of Thompson's most overtly political songs to date, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me," told from the perspective of a nervous young soldier stationed in Baghdad (abbreviated as "Dad" in the song). Richard Thompson is a consummate singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career stretches back to the late '60s, when he was a founding member of the British folk-rock Fairport Convention. In the late '70s, with his then-wife, Linda, he recorded Shoot Out the Lights, which regularly makes critics' lists of the best records of all time. In the '90s, he experienced another career renaissance with the album Rumor & Sigh and he remains an elder-statesman of alternative rock.

Richard Thompson has been making fantastic music ever since his days in Fairport Convention and Sweet Warrior is another album from the top shelf. It's wonderful to hear him in electric mode where his stinging guitar playing and lyrics shine through. Songwriting and guitar playing just don't come any better...the man's a genius.

If only Sandy was still around to sing with him again!

WOW!.......2007-07-27

This is the BEST sounding record I have heard in a LONG time. (And I hear a LOT of music). The only thing better was hearing him do these songs live at the 9:30 club in DC! (BTW... NPR's website has a podcast of that show). This CD gets me through my pain in the butt commute to work in *lovely* over-populated N. VA. The first two songs are sure to get my blood pumping in the morning! The musicians that Thompson uses on this CD (mostly the guys he tours with) are fantastic. (Danny Thompson is one of my favorite bassists!). But everything about this CD sounds great... the songwriting(!), the arrangements, the musicians' performances and the production. I can NOT get tired of this album. What strikes me the most about this CD - as all of Thompson's music - is that he sounds like NO ONE ELSE. His songwriting is unique, and his lyrics are interesting. He gets away with lyrics that would sound weird written by anyone else ("Mister Stupid"). But the way he puts songs together just WORKS! He is at times political without being obnoxious about it. And then there's THAT guitar playing. I can't comprehend what he does with a guitar most of the time (even after seeing him live), but I LOVE the way it sounds! The first half of the album has a lot of punch to it, and gets mellower toward the end (I smell a record label's influence there!). But it remains powerful throughout with stellar performances all the way to the beautiful "Sunset Song" at the end of the disc. I NEVER hit "skip" with this CD (except to get back to the beginning of the CD at the end of the last song!).

Have been listening to it for a week. More up-tempo than his last album--Front Parlour Ballads--and overall, better. Also more consistent than 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Cool album.
